Brenden Schaeffer breaks down the Cardinals 2-0 win over the Reds from Sunday, June 30, 2024 at Busch Stadium.
Lance Lynn reached a milestone in his scoreless start, becoming the 6th Cardinal pitcher to reach 1,000 strikeouts in a Redbird uniform. Lance Lynn 2K for his career is a milestone just around the corner next.
Cards got what little offense they needed to set up the Triumvirate for the slamming of the door, as Ryan Helsley converted number 30 on the year.
We go down on the farm to discuss Luken Baker's power and the Springfield start for lefty starter prospect Quinn Mathews.
And unfortunately we need to have a more detailed conversation about the struggles by Nolan Gorman. They have reached biblical proportions. And not good bliblical... Like the parts about the plagues and stuff.
I hope you all enjoy the final podcast of my 20s!

Happy 30th Birthday, Brenden, love you sir. Proud of you, so happy for your success.
I don’t think you know how high your ceiling is, but it’s higher than I think you think.
Great work, sir.
They’re playing better than what I thought they would. I think their record is better than how they’ve played, overall. If I’d said Nado & Goldy would be sub .700 OPS, you’d have said “Last Place”. IDK, BS, it’s hard to vision a Sea of Red with this group.
Thanks Scott. You've been with me going way back, man. I appreciate you.
I give up trying to figure out Lynn.
Gorman has easily earned a trip to Memphis.
Oli said a few days ago that Gorman's problem is his pitch recognition. Then on top of that, you can see his frustration building up. Maybe a trip down to Memphis to work on improving his obvious difficulty with recognizing pitches.
That'd be crazy enough to probably work. Our home run leader spending time in the minors? My how this game has changed.
Cardinals aren’t doing a good job of prepping these guys on a day in and day out basis…..Or, Gorman simply isn’t doing his homework on the pitching matchup. Scouting reports should give tendencies on what hitters should be expecting from a pitcher in certain counts, situations, etc.
If Gorman can’t tell the difference between a fastball and an off speed pitch at this point, a trip to Memphis won’t help/change that.
2 young hitters struggling and needing trips to the minors.
This should a screaming red alert that whoever is responsible for getting these guys ready to hit is not doing their job….or there’s zero accountability that guys are making sure they are prepared on a day in/day out basis.
The Cardinals went 16-12 in June. Not exactly thriving but definitely staying afloat.
Hey if you do 16-12 6 times or so your pace is like 93 or 94 wins give or take!
Product still not good enough. Sell the team, goblin bill!
I hope we pay Helsley when it comes to it. Last 3 outs are always the hardest to get and he’s been killing it. Honestly, his ability to still get the job done even when his stuff isn’t the sharpest is more impressive than him having his sharpest stuff every night.
Nice job, Cardinals, and as far as Gorman 🤐🤐. Also, happy birthday 🎂 sir
Thanks Ace!
Seven o'clock, Monday morning, no Hot Take Central...I guess I'll listen to Brandon in the mornings now. Any possibility of 3-hour shows?
🤣 if only!
I'd play Edman at 2B again if Gorman continues to struggle. I'd keep Donovan in LF where he's been thriving defensively. I love Siani in CF where he will have a good shot for a Gold Glove! Burleson needs to keep playing the way he's hitting so keep him in RF. I'd make Gorman the DH mostly, and play 2B when Edman needs rest. Nootbaar could platoon with Burleson perhaps?! Carlson stays on the bench, and late defensive replacement perhaps for Burleson.
Sounds like a good plan to me 👍🏼
I’d move off Carlson Gio and Herrera.. for bullpen help.. I’d also move off Scott Hence and potentially Chase Davis for Robert Jr. or Trout.. this team needs a bopper in the middle
Gorman as of 6/3/23 had an OPS of .927 and by 6/29/23 he was down to .780. He was 8 for 65 with only 6 walks in that stretch. Much higher starting point there but still a precipitous fall of 147 points. He recovered a bit and hovered around .800 the remainder of the year.
Baseball Savant says he's worse in basically every way this year compared to last year. He's not terrible defensively but not good enough to really justify the spot. I think either Noot or Edman coming back should spell him for a while if he doesn't bounce back by then.
Birds on the Bat w B Schaeff. Happy birthday man thanks for all the content 🍻🎉
Thanks buddy!!
Hope he gets straight before Noot is back. BD has no issues at second.
Happy 30th, Brenden! Enjoy your day!
Goodness Reena I appreciate you, you're too kind! 🙏 Have a great day!😊
Happy birthday, Brendan! Enjoy the day, my man. You’re a real one
🤘preciate you bro
How about “Schaeff Up” ?? Anyway Happy Birthday 🎉, you’ll enjoy the 30’s, I did and also my 40’s, 50’s, and now my 60’s, all thanks to God and baseball 😊
That's right buddy!!!
If a team comes with a godfather offer, I think you entertain trading Helsley at this deadline.
You run the risk of a Hader/MIL situation of a few years ago, but PHI/BAL could make franchise altering offers to have Hels for this year and next year’s postseason
Happy 30th! This is where it gets interesting 😃
Haha let's make it happen!
Happy birthday!!
Thanks man!!
Good to see kance kynn do well and go 6 innings
Oops accidentally put kance kynn lol
I understand where you are comming fro. With Gorman. However if Walker is not good enough to be with the club then Gorman is not.
Happy Birthday, Brenden. Same day as mine.
Happy birthday Evan! Let's have a good one
Nearly 50% strikeout rate is appalling. No serious team would have him anywhere near the big leagues. He clearly isn't preparing properly...I'd say he needs to go to Memphis and be tutored on plate approach, but I dont think we have anyone in the ranks that can teach that. We are seeing it with Walker, and I cant think of any hitters who have actually gone to Memphis and "figured it out."
You have a good point. I am still up on the Gorman potential, but as Oli said, he is having trouble with pitch recognition. He does need to go down and put the effort improving that weakness in his plate approach.
If hou sendhim down it will be a dark hole where hd and walker aren t ever coming back.walker might make it back in 26 gorman never will
@@roballen8431 He's in a dark hole now
25:27 I'd be genuinely interested in seeing how many times that Gorman has struck out for out number 2 & 3 with RISP. That for me would be the biggest decider whether he gets benched for a spell. Like you said, anyone can come in and at least hit a few more than 5 for 71.
call the podcast the cardinal chronicles
Love listening to the podcast. The pod does need a revamped name though. Thoughts on “The Redbird Rundown”or “Cardinals Daily Dispatch”?
Haha I'm not sure if I'll actually change it, I do like that technically the name isn't specific to the Cardinals because in the off-season I'll talk a variety of topics when appropriate. I figure if I can make it big time with this name I can make it anywhere 🤣
When noot comes back send Gorman to 3a with the other guys that can’t hit
Jim Edmonds needs to be hitting coach
Right
This Reds series is the perfect example of this season. We eek out 1-0 and 2-0 wins and get shellaced in the other two. Our starting pitching has been so inconsistent, even Gray lately. A picture will look great for two or three starts and then abysmal the next couple. Only Gray and Gibson have strung a number of good outings together. This is a .500 type team and has no chance of competing against the top teams even if they do squeak into the playoffs. Only an aggressive and competent GM could make the deals to make this team dangerous. And that's not Mo.
this is all true but hey we went 7-3 in the home stand i’m not too mad about splitting the series just glad we were able to do that despite the sonny gray game
Sadly this team cannot hit.
They aren’t good. That’s why.
Imo if they made some serious moves they could be competitive.. Robert Jr.. or Trout.. need to be our CF.. Scott Hence Herrera Carlson Gio all moved maybe even Chase Davis.. this gives Burly the DH.. a legit defensive outfield and Edman the chance to take 2B back if he is healthy otherwise it stays Gman
@@boschlosser10 why trade future assets for often injured players. We have enough of those already. Especially not Hence.
Could send Gorman down to get his swing back. He has a lot of success in the minors, in 2 partial seasons in AAA his stats are very good, In 119 games (21 and 22 combined) with 474 total AB. R (80), H (130), 2B (19), HR (30), RBI (74), SLG (525), OPS (850). Nootbar will be back soon to play LF, there is Carlson, or you could call up Walker. Then Donovan could play second more then Edman could play 2nd (if he ever comes back). At this point i think he is all in his head and needs to be sent down. It is working (slowly but steadily) for Walker.
The Rockies literally just let the brewers win. MLB needs to investigate this. The brewers aren’t good, and teams just lay down for them. I’m serious at this point- something is going on.
They sat Carlson for a good long time because he wasn’t producing… hey happy birthday BSchaeff!
Thank you Jenn!😃
Happy birthday my 64th was yesterday
Happy birthday Bill!
Brenden, it seems like me, that you second guess yourself at times with this team. Maybe it’s because we are both lefties😂 or maybe it’s because of the way the Cards have played this year. I played at a pretty high level and I have seen 1,000’s of Cardinal’s games and I know after listening to your show from the beginning that you definitely know baseball. I’m always second guessing because what else can you do with this organization. Seems they change direction every other week. All teams do that but no where to the extent of our team. Maybe I’m just frustrated about the last couple years. Anyway, very happy birthday!
Hey when the team is pretty bipolar and I podcast daily it's easy to second guess yourself and your opinions. I just try to be transparent about that and not pretend to be smarter than I am;
@@bschaeffer12 I understand completely. That’s why you have become my go to podcast regarding the Cards.
Reality seems to be that we have arms to get us to the playoffs, but not win against the best of the best. However, our offense needs to figure it out. Just when you think they’re on the rise they fail, miserably, at home. Wondering if Gorman simply can’t hit to all fields. Wondering if he can only pull a guess. 5-73 is historically embarrassing. Sigh. Hopefully patience will be rewarded. 😃🍀🍀🍀Have a great week. folks. Pages settling in nicely. Shame Luken’s opportunity is blocked because our underperforming veterans need leadership from Carpenter. 🙄
Where is link for membership I do not see it
Hey Debbie it's in the video description below each video but I'll try to link it here as well if UA-cam will allow it, let's try it:

Why is this team incapable of blowing teams out? They get 6-0 lead, blow two chances to add on, then bang its 6-3. I knew it would happen. It’s like clockwork.
And now 6-4. Absolutely terrible and inexcusable by Gibson. He sucks and I don’t know why everyone is convinced otherwise.
Had very little optimism for Lynn he has had a few good games but he mostly stunk, his performance yesterday was one of the best in a long time, really hope this is a sign or a turn in his performance for the better. I feel like Gorman is a worse Goldschmidt, he does have the power and hits homers but overall he doesn't seem he hits apart from the homers. Hopefully hell be able to develop his skills over another year or two and he may be a superstar.
I hear that there automated strike zone don’t allow for high strikes in triple A . So is it possible that some guys would pitch better in the big leagues?
Definitely possible! Obviously hitters are much better up in MLB but guys can have some confidence from the zone being bigger
Are you interested in sponsorship for down on the farm. Would be fun to
Throw me up a way to pay and Hastings layers will sponsor it. I have chickens. You know you could have fun with that.
Was supposed to be for fun. Guess you didn’t see the humor
@@markhastings7454 absolutely!!! Interested in sponsors extremely 😃
maybe lance lynn’s birthday party was the turning point
Lance Lynn spit on that thang.
Omg 🤣🤣
Send Gorman down. Bring up Baker and have him DH. Donovan to 2nd. Carlson in left. If either of them play well it might open up some trade opportunities before the deadline.
Carlson is batting worse than siani and outfield with those two guys won’t work
Yo I like the name
🤘my man
Nick Dunn
When will stinky Steve return? Might as well start planning the parade!
Oh it'll be a while. If at all
This pertains to Gorman, but also Arenado and Goldschmidt. Maybe you can do the analysis or someone already has. Are HRs overrated? In other words, how many homers really matter? Versus, how many games are won or lost by just having a productive out with a runner on third? Our offense is shackled right now by the “big boys” in the middle of the lineup striking out too often. How many times have the top three in the lineup gotten to third with no outs or one out and then Goldschmidt or Arenado strikeout? So yeah, Gorman can hit HRs, but how many games have been lost because he can’t put the ball in play? Too many. And it’s not just him. I got on this a few years ago when we were losing a game 11-0 in the 9th and carpenter hit a HR. It padded his stats, but it meant absolutely nothing.
They matter in that it means automatic runs but I understand your point
So you're saying if a baseball team is up big, they should just go up to the plate and try not to get a hit?
Brenden what about sending
Gorman down and calling up Matt Koperniak. Strikeout Rate 27% vs Gorman 40%. If Cardinals would steal bases, bunt, etc to produce runs, his 16 HR would not be his saving grace.
Idgaf about 2 good starts. I’m happy for it, but I don’t believe we should keep Lance until he does that 3/4 times instead of having shit starts 5/6 times. He’s still not shown he’s worth anywhere near the money he’s being paid and we need to get rid of him ASAP. I’d deal him at the break if he’s had a few more good starts. He’s mediocre at best.
If anyone isn’t worth the money is Miles.. by long shot
@@boschlosser10 no argument from me. If we could dump Miles $18+ mill, Lynn’s and Matz, we would have something $40 mill and we could go get two $20mil/year pitchers. For perspective that means we could have had basically any 2 big free agents. If it wasn’t for those fucked contracts, we could have been in play for Glasnow, Cease, Snell, Monty, Iminaga. Like any 2 of those guys.
