    It is the year 2124. Jamie Moyer is on his 12th comeback tour since retiring at age 99. His pitches have become so slow they actually go back in time, hitting the catcher's mitt before the ball leaves his hand. He isn't just the starting pitcher for an MLB team, he's the starting pitcher for EVERY MLB team. No one has scored a run in 3 years.

    My favorite Jamie Moyer commercial was during his Seattle days. Jamie's throwing in spring training and the radar gun is showing 97-99. One of the guys asks, 'Is that in miles?' and Wilson (Seattle's main catcher at the time) said, 'No, it's in kilometers. Jaime got it in France and seems to like it.' Still funny to this day if you ever watch Jamie pitch.

    • @adameden8722
      @adameden8722 8 днів тому +14

      He's in the record books for oldest winning pitcher and it's hard to see him losing that distinction any time soon. Maybe as time goes on, that achievement coupled with his longevity and unique career will get him over the hump. 269 wins and 2400 strikeouts seems pretty darn good to me. That's 35th and 47th out of all pitchers in the history of the league. Seems like you could make an argument.

    • @drake101987
      @drake101987 6 днів тому +7

      His own exhibit case in the museum seems more appropriate. He was far from a HOF pitcher. I think if he came back as a coach or announcer and did a decent job, they might put him in for a total contribution to baseball. Although, if it really was about fame, he should be in.
      Baseball is old and has many oddities. If Cooperstown had The Hall of Amazing Feats, someone like Moyer or Maris could get a plaque. But the entire museum is already a hall of amazing feats with the HOF at the end.

      I mean his career ERA starts with a 4 which I think automatically excludes you. But it's worse than that, his is 4.25 with a 4.49 FIP. He's the all-time leader in home runs allowed while striking out no more than 6.1 guys per 9 in his entire career. Pitching 4000 innings is very well and good but over his career he was basically an average starter. Under 50 war too if you put stock in that sort of thing.

Maddux did it later in his career, as well (but obviously had better velocity). i never thought i'd see the day where Jamie retires. he must've had an incredible recovery regimen and definitely knew his bodies limits. i don't think i ever saw him feature anything that was overtly taxing on the arm throughout his entire career lol. my man's career spanned longer than i've even been alive (i was born 1987). i have nothing but respect for a guy like this, who can break the mold of a prototypical player. you love to see it.

    Moyer's career shows just how important command is. Even if you don't throw hard you can still get outs if you can reliably paint the corners and force batters to swing at pitches outside their comfort zone.

    I love this story and didn't know a fraction of it beforehand. Thank you for making it and sharing -- I really enjoyed it.
    I used to play many sports and baseball was one of my favorites. After moving to Japan, I was invited to play weekly on a Taiwanese team in Tokyo, where I made good friends and was able to relive a bit of my childhood by getting back on 3rd base. At that time, I was already in my mid 40s and my knees were shot, but it was still fun. Sadly had to move away for work and found myself in Hiroshima, but two years ago I suddenly wasn't able to even walk uphill. Found out I had a large cancerous tumor on my kidney. Been battling it since then. Now I'm 49 and still wish I could go out and play, but I may not even make it to 50. Seeing Moyer's story brought a smile to my face. Thanks again.

    CORRECTIONS:
    1: Balls APPEAR faster in little league cause the speed is measured when ball nears the plate, not when it leaves the pitchers hand. so 82 in little league is significantly slower with major league mound distance. So NO, a little leaguer did not throw faster than Jamie Moyer. If he threw from a little league mound he would be much faster than any kid.
    2: He did not lead the league in wins at 38. he was tied for second with 20, leader had 21. It was 2001 and there were more wins from pitchers in both leagues that year.

  • @lexerdaniel4843

    Dude pitched for the Braves 16 years. That’s wild.
    Also ironic that Chavez is in the league, about to turn 41 and an important cog for a Braves team that’s almost 95% to make the playoffs even if it’s via.

    Control is a thing you just lose less of as you get older, you see it in the NBA where older players will transition into being better shooters towards the end of their career while other parts of their game starts to decline. Same with QBs in the NFL, they become more of pocket passers and will often have higher accuracy even if their air yards decline. Add this with the fact that in baseball the slower your ball is traveling the more effect your different types of pitches will be able to have(same spin will make a slower ball curve more) and how much accuracy has been deincentivized in the game over the years with both pitchers and hitters focusing more on fastballs over well placed balls. Being able to have this level of control or accuracy that you can hold onto longer into your career is kinda the only way to make it that long and still preform well. Still crazy impressive though.
