The Tubes were so ahead of their time. To listen now is almost painful from a societal or humanitarian point of view, but musically, they are epic. I'm introducing my kids to their genius. Thank you, The Tubes for your grand introspection!!!!
I saw the Tubes in Boston Mass in 1980! What a GREAT show! A different theatrical performance for each song! Simply amazing! I've never seen anything like that before, or since!
Rest In Peace, Kent Perry and thanks for hepping me to this, very great, version. You are already missed and will always, a part of you, remain among the living. Goodnight, KP!
Boomers never really got satire or parody in Rock. They were so ahead of their time. Saw them in 79 when i was 15. One of the best concert i went too. If I don't count the Ramones but they were like a force of nature.
Their musical genius, their comedic relief amidst all the head spinning genre blending ideas. This song in particular is rather prescient in the message that it conveys. Clearly the most recent developing industrialized countries in the last three decades never heard this remarkable band or this song. A message to convey all but too late. Arghh.... consumerism has certainly reared its ugly head. Fee Waybill should've been a fortune teller. I have this Tubes live double album eponymously named What Do you Want from Live. I bought it in the early eighties. An import album that cost an arm and a leg. Still play it on occasions and can't help but marvel at how phenomenal this band was.
Likewise, live on the OSU campus in 1983 front row I have never seen anything that awesome since, Fee was spitting on stage and all kinds of crazy stuff
I watched this on a UHF channel in my room when I was 10yrs old Toronto Canada, Roger Cable access channel! Back before Ted Rogers decided to sell it all out
The first album was brilliant creative and sooo FN unique sadly the industry was looking for commercial hits.. yes the later tunes were great but for original the first album takes GOLD
Classic! Though...that mad show at the NAMM Show where the band didn't fit on the stage and that little room in the middle, back in the day...lol...shook and bounced like it was gonna explode. THAT was Rock & Roll! lol :O)
"A Winnebago, hell, a herd of Winnebago's we're givin' em' away! "How about a solid gold Kama Sutra coffee pot??" Yes I'll take both please. Awesomeness of this one is infinitely immeasurable. But I did. It comes to exactly 25'11 1/4", give or take. Hmm, not so infinite after all! And this band, and this song, are tragically under-loved... under-rated, and under-the-influence. Under-stand?
My 25 yr old son thought he would do something special for Mom(60). Hell I found myself at a club in Modesto, CA at the top of the tubes guest list for their show that night. (Had seen the Tubes 3x before) Very young crowd, son's age. As Fee is singing this I'm rocking out and singing along of course. Last verse, here it comes, band stops playing, Fee holds the microphone out to the audience, pointing and saying no, no, no...several times I yell out with arm straight in the air...A BABY'S ARM HOLDING AN APPLE. I had just met Fee. He looks at me, points and says, "give that woman the prize she's the only one in this entire room that got it right" My son is at the bar mouth hanging down. Thats when you know YOUR PARENT IS COOLER THAN YOU ARE. 😁✌
Sounds really good from the LP IN QUADRAPHONIC SOUND THROUGH HEADPHONES while laying on a pile of pillows after smoking a dube! Im imagining a new version of this song! Layered!
You are the only person other than myself, that knows about quad. I heard one of the first quad albums in 1970. The Who's Quadraphenia. Wasn't analog great. These children don't know great sound.
1st time I saw them was at San Diego State's open air theater. Fee entered by coming down the aisle swinging a roaring chainsaw. An awesome performance.
The baby's arm holding an apple is a reference to a Lenny Bruce joke about how a brother's junk looked like "a baby's arm with an apple in its fist." Adam 1 3's incipient negritude will come as a pleasant surprise to his honorary aquarium parents, Ralph Bunch and Ida Lapino. (Yeah, I bet it will)
My two favorite bands when I was in high school. The mothers and the tubes. My friends thought I was an idiot they were listening to Ted Nugent, kiss and or Aerosmith type bands. Not saying they were bad they just didn't do a lot for me. I love satire accompanied by awesome musicianship.
Does anybody Know; is That Re Styles Playing the Dominatrix riding the Kid in the Car in the Tubes "She's a Beauty" Video??? The Best Band to Eva' Come Out of "Sham" Francisco!!!
One of the greatest bands ever
WORD !!! !!! 😊
So far ahead of their time!
Making fun of Cable TV and microwaves in 1974!
All with electronic synth sounds yeah!
Incredible musicians playing complex Melodies with fun campy lyrics , great combo!

The Tubes! R ace! They take right back ... ❤
First band I ever saw live. Still love them 🥰
Lucky you. Spoiled you for many others I bet.
I was lucky enough to see these live in Birmingham England late 70s.. 77.. 78 .. 79 ish they were superb
it's a regret that I never saw then live. Outstanding!!
Such a varied sound these guys had, so many different genre's all mixed up. White punks on dope
Just saw them at the Belly Up Tavern - STILL ROCK!!!
That's awesome!
I saw them a few years ago in a Chicago area bar. Outstanding.
We used to listen to this album in fifth and sixth grade back in the early 70s
Always enjoy , very talented!! under rated band that ever to come out of the city.
What makes you believe they're underrated? Did you travel the globe taking a survey from every citizen of the world? Please explain.
went to HS w/ their little bro's loved the 70's so much fun
GENIUSES. Thanks from Italy for everything you did, dear Tubes.
Great early arrangement, winterland lives on...
A bunch of friends and i listened to the double live album late 70s a classic
I was there!!!! Southern comfort and me.
Rest In Peace, Kent Perry and thanks for hepping me to this, very great, version. You are already missed and will always, a part of you, remain among the living. Goodnight, KP!
I wish I could turn back time to see this show live on Halloween Night 1974 in San Francisco. Amazing!
You guys are just absolutely TOO good !!! Wonderful cut, even better performance of this in Atlanta!!! You almost burned us out again !!😳

Saw this Band perform live 3x in Portland and Corvallis

@@P0rgyTirebiterFee is definitely one of the most entertaining Lead Singers I ever saw live. The concert on OSU campus was really good
W.P.O.D. !!!!!!!!!! A memory that will live in my heart forever. What a wonderful concert/Atlanta!

Showmen extraordinaire!
Amazing!
its so subversive and a slap in the face to the status quo at the time. incredible
I can't help but think Stan Ridgeway's monologue in Wall Of Voodoo's "Call Of The West" drew heavily from Fee Waybill's in this song
Wall of Voodoo and The Tubes! Great bands!!

lordsardonicvids The version of this song from the live album is better, more interesting gifts, “or a poke in the eye with a blunt stick”.
