Summary:
Taken from the archives of the late promoter Bill Graham, this performance of San Francisco's legendary art rockers, the Tubes, dates back to 1979, when the band was in their prime. This recording was done just before the Tubes departed A&M Records (where they had been since 1974 and broken as a national act), to start a new and even more successful run on Capitol Records.
The group, which had built its career on rock parodies and comic-driven hard rockin' epic tales, was continually dancing atop the fence that divided good honest rock with a pinch of outrage and pop culture obscenity. Drummer Prairie Prince's wife, Re Styles, appeared each night on this tour topless in a black leather bondage uniform which employed strategically placed electrical tape; and lead singer, Fee Waybill did no less than a dozen costume changes during the show, including the glam-rock, punked out persona of Quay Lewd during "White Punks On Dope." With songs like "Don't Touch Me There," "No Way Out," "What Do You Want From Life?" and "Mondo Bondage," the Tubes were never at a loss of interesting material. They end this hour and a half set with a medley of "Baby O'Riley" and "The Kids Are Alright"
By the time the Tubes played this show, they had become a well-oiled rock 'n' roll machine, whose powerhouse rhythm section (with percussionists Prince, Mingo Lewis and bassist Rick Anderson), propelled the souped-up engine of keyboardists Vince Welnick, Michael Cotten and guitarists Roger Steen and Bill "Sputnik" Spooner. Waybill, aside from being the best theatrical showman since Peter Gabriel, was simply an outstanding rock vocalist.
They have always been a cutting edge band, and the best material in the Tubes' repertoire has been able to melt quirky humor, intricate musicianship, and radio-friendly pop hooks into a memorable blend. They have always been known for putting on an incredible live show, spearheaded by front man Fee Waybill's vaudevillian stage charisma. At the end of the day, however, the Tubes' "in-your-face" theatrics were their greatest virtue and their biggest liability-when they became trapped by their unprofitable stage show, they went barebones and decided to focus only on the music. Unfortunately, no one was all that interested. The indifference caused band to breakup in the mid-1980s, and though they tried to re-group in 1987 without Waybill, it wasn't until a new deal with BMG imprint Radikal Records in 1995 that the core line-up finally reformed.
The late great Restyles in the sexiest parody ever. Tubes concerts from that era were simply incredible. Saw them over 20 times, at least 4 with Re. Smoky voice sassy and sultry, as a teenager you might have come into a Tubes show wanting to date a cheerleader when you left you wanted a bad girl in a leather jacket. Godspeed princess.
Possibly the sexiest... and funniest... song of the sevenies! Classic!
Fee Waybill, the ultimate artiste
The background vocals here by Spooner, Steen, and the others are top notch. I can't imagine any rock band pulling off something like this nowadays!
Now? Just play the album on stage, hehe.
Yes people the tubes are an absolutely top notch rock and roll band that dove into new territory and won rock fans over everywhere!
As I look back I start to realize just how much theatre was involved with a lot of bands back then I thought it was just a rock show but in my older age realize it was theatre, and the Mothers that started a lot of that type of stage craft
Heard this on SF radio in the summer of '76 when my brother, cousin and I did our 12,000 mile camping trip "out West". This is the first that I've SEEN this song.
Fee was as much an actor as he was a singer !!!
I had gone to The Tubes concert back then with my younger brother and his friends. he was really into them and I had never heard of them at the time. We were on the front row and during one song they dragged me out of the audience onto the stage; my brother and his friends went crazy! Great memories.
Yea, this was that tune:

Oh my Gosh!! Was it for the song; "What do you want from Life"? Was it filmed, it might be on here somewhere if it was!! Bob
WOW COOL !!!

This video completely sums up San Francisco in the 1970s. You don't need anything more to understand what it was like.
And what a great place to be in those days. 72-78 then I headed north.
I remember when I was a kid and my dad would listen to the Tubes. I would listen from the back seat, loving it. Thinking this song made me feel a little bit uncomfortable when I was a kid but then I grew up listening to The Tubes bc of Dad and, love them so much.
I saw this tour as well, in Chicago the crowd loved how could you Not love Re-styles
The incomparable Re and Fee. Re Styles and Fee Waybill.
Fantastic band to see LIVE in the 70's.....
I remember this on the AM radio in the early 70’s , glad I got to see the Tubes!
Same here
Loudest live band ever. Ears rang for days. Great memories.
Maybe not quite. I saw the Tubes in 1978 at a 2,000 seat venue. Outside the actual theater there was a large lobby and concession area. The opening act was the Pat Travers Band. They were so loud that even in the lobby they were deafening. I had to wait outside until they were done or I would have been deaf before the Tubes even hit the stage. I can honestly say the Tubes were not the loudest band that night. Oh, and btw, Queensryche were the loudest band I ever saw. Glad you enjoyed the Tubes!
Very much a stage show along with a musical concert.
Classic Tubes. So thankful it's in UA-cam.
Getting back on the motorcycle for the chorus still has me screaming
Saw this tour at The Palladium in NYC on 4/28/79 for both the 8pm and 12am show. Excellent show. Not another band like the Tubes
We need a band like THE TUBES right now !
The spirit of musicals like the Phantom of the Paradise or Rocky Horror Picture Show, great time, great music.
Rest easy, Re Styles.
Reverend!!
Saw them open for Blue Oyster Cult around 1985ish...
Motorcycle on stage, chain saw and a Television set...And "Quay Lewd." 15 years old, blown out on Thai Stick....Well....
Cheers!🍄🌲🍄✨💥🌈
Absolutely epic
Re Syles was absolutely amazing!
fantastic ...............way ahead of the times
Reminds me of Rocky Horror. No idea the Tubes were so good.
Ironic that Fee Waybill went on to play Dr. Frankenfurter in a Rocky Horror roadshow.
This isn't even the best tour l saw from them. Remote Control was incredible and Re's vocals on Prime Time were fantastic. Oakland would have been a homecoming show for them.
Great song, sheer brilliance in my opinion. I saw them in 79 at the Roxy a small venue in Hollywood. I was in the 2nd row. No theatrics or gimmicks. I was so Mesmerized by the keyboardist,. he was working like a mad scientist on this switchboard type looking synth. Pulling and plugging his patches. It Sounded cool. The music and musicianship was incredible, they were very much on top of there game then too. I m going to see them in July in Bug Bear Lake - can't wait! They, like me are older and I know they won't perform this song but I hope they do? Wonder how many of the original members are in the group today? I Saw other recent live videos on UA-cam , wasn't overly impressed . But it's the Tubes! -A blast from my past. Great to see this video!
I miss the days of Señor Quay Lewd… those were some killer shows!!
WTF , 70k views only for this classic
This is great music and showmanship. Awesome!
The smell of burning leather as we hold each other tight......
LOVE IT!! Fee n RE !!!
Magic at it's most pure.
I had a RD400 about that time, cool to see one onstage with Fee and Re about a year after this was filmed I was stationed in the Bay area and rode my RD all over the place. RIP Re Styles
I've loved these guys for years.
First listened to The Tubes on KSAN.
Yeah the guy who was a comedian and was on in the mornings used to play this all the time.
classic tubes
Love that RD!
RIP Re!
happy birthday re styles
I can't believe I never quite got this song. When first I heard it as a teen in the late 70s, I just thought the chorus was like in ML's Paradise By The Dashboard Light, but the point is obviously: what we cannot have, we only want more...even if we didn't want it in the first place.
That set piece seems like something Spinal Tap cooked up.
I saw this 79 tour in Boston. They toured with Squeeze.
Re Styles, my first crush. Sleep well babe.
I HAVE TO TOUCH HER THERE!! If she hadn't made such a big deal of it...
we could have just played, idk, Yahtzee or.... but no! Now it's hide-the-weenie or nothing!
R.I.P. Re Styles.
great!!!!
I saw them at "Uncle Sam's" in Sebastopol, Ca on New Years Eve, 1972. Quite a show.
RIP Re Styles.
Great!!!
one of the funniest guys in Rock (Fee Waybill).
fkn 70's were so fun

Vince Furschugginer Welnick!?!?!?!?! The Grateful Dead's last keyboard player...

Please don't touch me there, but you can beat the ever-living shit out of my solidly helmeted field soldier. Reporting for duty, ma'am.
does anyone know who this is on vocals. is it Shirley (Re Styles)?
Yes its ReStyles
Great act. No means yes.......♤
It's 8-26-24
It wouldn't be out of place in The Rocky Horror Show.
anthony mcdibble Fee played “Frankenfurter” in summer stock productions of Rocky Horror. You can hear all about it in my (audio only) interview with him here: soundcloud.com/pallas-dutch-invasion/my-in-depth-interview-with-fee-waybill-the-tubes-part-1
Nice motorcycle!
A Yamaha RD400 or RD350.
The original two-stroke rice-grinder pocket-rocket. Had more than a few friends who lost limbs or died on them. My 350 had the cafe bars and power pipes, what a screamer! Man those things were fast up to 60.
A 400...I owned a 350 @ the time when a 'lady friend' took me to This Show. We laughed and enjoyed all of it....and the 350 later ended up under my spouse's tush (Not the same woman, but...) for quite awhile. After the 180 scooter she was riding, she loved it. We later both rode up to Laguna Seca to catch some GP bike races; she on the 350, me on a Vision 550. "You let your wife ride a 2 stroke!?" was a common comment... Sure; she wasn't prone to getting f'd up and trying to show someone how 'hot' she could ride....or attempt to...
Bikes in SF at the time was the way to go...get anywhere, park on a sidewalk, 'snake-dance' through traffic... We lived in the Mission, I worked 'south of the slot', and loved being in The City.
Left in '90 when the 'Dot.com' boom started to turn the place into the strangled and pricey puddle it's become. The only thing we missed was the food....and some of the people we left behind...
We've kept the memories... ;)
There you go😎😎😎❤️🩹❤️🩹
Is that bike a Yamaha RD 350, or 400?
Funny how we thought this was so naughty when I was a kid, and now we have Miley Cyrus twerking with guys clearly simulating a father figure....well, I guess that was inevitable. Sex IS fun at that age, it's all you think about all the time. (ok, I did, anyway)
Far out!
Wonder what Re Styles looks like today.
who is the girl singer and is she still around ?
no she died in a helicopter crash...was doing traffic for a San Fran radio station
Vicky McWilliams
REALLY?!?!
It was a co-writer of this song (Jane Dornacker) that died in a helicopter crash in NYC. Not the singer (Re Styles)
Yes, and she still won't date you...
@@MajorCulturalDivide Saw Jane when she was in Leila and the Snakes at a little club in SF in 77'. Great show.
in the year 1979 in seattle maybe it was 80....i dunno they did don't touch, followed by mondo bondage, fee had re handcuffed to a blackboard she was sporting a bra and panties, fee was in greaser wear, the tubes the most innovative band in history
Where is there? Pittsburgh?
RiP Re Styles.
Is that a RD 400?
Better than GREASE. Do you agree?
OH ISN'T THAT SOO NICE-- ON THE MOTOR BIKE--WOW--THAT'S OLD STUFF HEY? ISN'T IT?
John Kyne
Yamaha RD400 or 350.
Fantastic bikes. First ever with standard dual front disks and alloy wheels.
No hipsters digging this for COVID-19?
What ever happened to Re?
is that Jane Dornacker
Richard O'Brien?
@ 3:00
I gotta sign off...
Before I Smoke some Joe Rogan...
Late 70's ......?
They're Halloween Shows ..
Were EPIC....!
Bye Bye...
chamaram as melhoores
My interpretation is that the Singer does not quite yet know the subject of his adoration is a transveste.
Opinions?
Love this song! Saw the Tubes in the 8o's, still holding the mantle.
They didn't do this as good as Leila and the Snakes did.
RD 400
She is HOT.
Haha a RD 400
Deja vu ? de basement? derrilium? tDDBBB
The tube should be renamed the flat tires. Yikes. Pass the ear plugs.
3:52 - OMG too hot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Tubes are kinda like Frank Zappa light
