Nah, it's just an earlier version. I have a copy of Let It Be that has a demo version of this song with these lyrics. Sorry to be Mr. Know-It-All, just thought you should know too.
Bob Stinson was a genius guitarist. He was like a more unhinged Bob Quine...ripping leads that should have never been right for the song at hand buuuuut, when Bob played them they were wonderful and clever and perfect
@@bobpike8050 well, he certainly wasn't Mozart...that's for sure...BUT, his uncanny ability (kinda like Robert Quine, Jeff Cotton, Elliott Ingbar, etc) to juxtapose some of the most bizarre things that make zero sense at all into a song and completely understand how his bizarr-o parts would take the song at hand to a level of greatness that it fully deserved in order to shine...that's pretty crazy!! I have tried playing some of my fave Bob-era Mats tunes and tried dropping in the kind of solos and fills that a less creative/typical player might have played and, there's a lot of songs that kinda have the soul sucked out of them. Sure, there are some that are very, very good (not great) without Bob's unique additions but, Bob's fondness for YES, 50s rock and roll, Mountain & other classic rockers, Aerosmith, 50s and 60s country and, Captain Sensible provided him with the diversity of influences that matched his ability to play the guitar and, most importantly for me - the uniquely whacked out headspace to make the magic happen. Just my opinion though. Definitely not opposed to any other opinions. Cheers
@@dougsmith7083 I think he is great. I see myself in Bob since my two favorite bands were Yes and Kiss and like Bob, I was a superfan who played guitar. When I first started playing, he was my key inspiration with his "just go for it" solos. With a bit if theory, I developed into a better player but I lost something as well.
Were there any artists before Westerberg that just improvised lyrics in the moment for pretty much every song? Never a worry about remembering, just make 'em up and mix 'em up. And sometimes it was an improvement.
Stuff only works when you can sing as well as he does. I know cause I tried to do this once and was met with the most thunderous silence/scorn there ever was. So kids! REmember your lyrics and sell them right.
I am looking forward to seeing the MATS in 3 days in Washington, DC....hopefully they play this classic and AlexChilton, Bastard of Young and Kiss me on the Bus, unsatisfied and Androgynous
Love/Hate this song. Beautiful and a rough heartbreaker, hard to listen to at times. BTW...Paul's wearing the striped pants. Musta fucked up somehow the day before (or so I read....).
David R. Rake I always laugh about the pants. They weren't even on tour this night so its not like that's the only clothes he had. He could have easy went home and changed, given that he only lived a few miles from first avenue
Hey Ryan, I was referring to what I'd read in the great Trouble Boys bio. According to it, wearing the striped pants was a sign of doing something stoopid (even by Mats standards) the day before. It was just a guess, certainly could be wrong. Cheers!
when it comes to poets who worked in punk i think there are only three: paul westerberg + john doe and exene. patti smith was on the fringes of the scene, but her music wasn't punk. he did have a punk-ish attitude.
Is this from when they played at the Guthrie, warming up for X? Or First Ave...Looks like 1st Ave, but that was the year of the Guthrie show, I think. I remember those pants.
greatest band ever
tied with motley crue
@@luddite333 Come on they are possible the worst .. Motley Cruzy? I would guess you think the best record of the Replacements was Sorry Ma?
@@oppothumbs1 It is.
Yeah.
I love his eyeliner in this footage, he should of wore it more, its fucking badass

I love these video so much. Thank you for posting. This is achingly great. Sloppy out of tune and from the heart.

You just referenced two of my all time favorites.👍🏻
@@tobysbreathisverybad you have excellent taste!!!
Genius may be taking it a bit far. He is among the gods, though.

Only Paul can wear those pants and look cool.
Brad Wood magic slacks! Look ‘em up!
Wow. Mats are among the all-time great bands. Brings back so many amazing memories.

He didn't necessarily always do that and Morrison used to freestyle with the Doors but I do feel you man.
Alex Berkey Paul likes to have a little fun- but he is notorious for forgetting lyrics and even chords.
Diamond David Lee Roth would fake whole songs.
Bob Dylan has been doing it since the 60s when he plays live. Check out some of live albums like 1965, 66 and 75

This version of the song hits me right in the feels. Hard.
I've never seen Paul sing so intently. Nothing close to this.
They could be really great if they felt like it. Sill luv them either way tho.
Of course Tommy would have been about 16 when this was recorded ...
Yep. Born 10/6/66, so just turned 17.
the song was written about him, sort of pauls hey jude since i think tommy saw paul as an older brother more than bob
X supported by The Mats... perfect.

Why won't the camera show Bob playing his lead?
What a beautiful raunchy guitar tone. So iconic
Paul’s ode to teenaged Tommy (and all other 16-year-olds)
fanzines ain't cheap, I know...
I think your lying about your lying now your lying on your back.
Damn...suprised to see any new footage with Bob...
Song is great .. Pauls and band sound much better in the studio . Bob's guitar at the end is so fucking haunting.
Fuck, bob stops short at the end.
A balls to the wall beautiful mess
Nice! I saw them on this tour on a rough night when Bob had trouble playing. Still a blast, though.
podemos hacer como que mi próximo cumpleaños es el número 16 solo por esta vez? un año no es tanta diferencia...
"You're mine, if you want to......."
GreAT line but No Bob Stinson guitar at the end .. one for the best guitars of all time. Song needs it.
You're lying, Now you're lying on your back
I love the Pope John Paul II t-shirt. Viva il Papa!

Nice! I've never read that but pretty funny! Wonder what it meant when bob wore a dress?
These guys were one of a kind. Wish I could've caught them last August in Toronto with Iggy. Great tunes. Great memories.
I prefer these lyrics over the album version. The alternate take is so much better.
it’s the “I want you next to me”
why no solo?
great footage. I've watched all the tracks you've posted @honkytonk6000. Where's the rest of the set?
Wow, fantastic
I can die now
best version
BTW I love the T shirt Paul's wearing.

Joe fucking Strummer!
Richard Hell

Long live the mats.
Heart breaking
Happy Birthday to Johnny W!
Thank you
Just stick to the album songs. Save the live stuff for another playlist.
