  • A treat for DC lovers! Back then, a friend of mine had close relations with some LPs from Bombay division, hence, I was able to enjoy a WCM2 loco ride from Bombay V.T. to Pune (hauling the Bombay-Kanyakumari Exp) and back to Ghatkopar. I took my dad along for the ride. This video covers the trip till Pune. There is plenty to action to be savored including:
    - WCM2 loco controls
    - Races and crossings with EMUs
    - Enouncters with WCM2, WCM4, WCM5 and WCG2 locos
    - Crossings with Madras-Bombay Exp, Howrah-Bombay Mail via Nagpur, Khopoli-Karjat Pass., Udyan Exp, Indrayani Exp.
    - Halts at Dadar, Kalyan, Karjat, Lonavala
    - WCG2 bankers at Karjat
    - Bhor Ghats in monsoon
    - Passage through tunnels
    - Arrival at Pune

Bombay VT(CSTMumbai) Kanyakumari Exp(1081down, 1082up) was also called Jayanti Janatha Exp. I was in Mumbai(Mulund) from 1980 to 98, working with KJSomaiya College of Engg as Professor (85-98). Since my hometown was in Kerala, this was the only train we could take those days. The journey took 36 hrs to complete, your video revived nostalgic memories of my Mumbai days. I still miss the Maximum city very much. Once a Mumbaikar always a Mumbaikar. There was one friend of mine MrShetty, who used to say'Mumbai ka aadmi Mumbai ko bhool nahi sakhthe'.

Travel Vlogging when the term vlogging wasn’t even coined ! You were truly ahead of your time! What a treasure for Indian railway fans! A rare beauty.
As a boy , I always dreamt of entering into the Mumbai suburban motorman’s cabin and learn how it’s driven. My dad never managed to take me into one but he would point at the various levers from outside and say what’s what! I made my own little mock setup at home mimicking those levers and pretended I drove a train too making artificial train sounds with my mouth. I sketched engines from memory after every train ride! Oh that passion and innocence and curiosity. Your video reminded me of all that. Where I live now has no trains! I long to travel in one . I have had the best of sleeps travelling in trains 🤗.

Indrayani and Deccan express both in brown with newly introduced Air brake coaches in late 1994 and early 1995. Indrayani had the thin green stripe with brown and Deccan exp had cream brown DC EMU type livery. Both trains met with an Incident and Accident respectively with their new rakes. Indrayani rolling down the ghat without the crew and Deccan express derailed at sion. Both used to get WCM5s as those were the only WCMs converted to air brakes.

Pune was very, very different back then!
Even lonavala, khandala and Mumbai were very different back then...
They were so much beautiful! Pune was so full of greenery and hills all around, I remember that so vividly.
Climate of Pune back then was extremely pleasant all the year round. Trust me, even in the summers if there were power cut-outs one would not be bothered at all without a running fan or cooler....
The climate was so good, actually! In winters I have myself seen temperatures go down as low as 8 to 7°c during those times!...
Now pune is not the same at all. So many things have changed, so many trees and even certain sections of hills have been flattened out just to construct residential or commercial properties or for constructing educational institutions...
I miss that pune, really! 😭😭

I used to call these engines ' Jumbo Engines' because of their sheer size. I used to force my dad to take me to the engine and marvel at their majestic appearance. What a timeless classic. Having lived during that period in Bombay and enjoyed majestic WCM locos being attached at both VT and Dadar to rake was an experience. The sign English Electric and Vulcan Foundry used to give a kick to me as a student. Then came the BHEL DC locos and now the standard ac P5 -7 or WAP4 locos - this is a classic loco as well seen for so long. Having watched so many times, I have no words to thank you.

@@ManiVijay I did CA from 1978 to 1982 in Bombay spending almost 6 months in Pune travelling when these classics were in operation. Then again from 1988 to 1996 I was a frequent visitor staying each time for long periods travelling between Pune and Bombay for audits. Once BHEL locos came, the charm was a bit less though my Brother in law from BHEL told me they were much superior ones - obviously. There is one WCM 1 kept in Chennai rail museum and for some time they allowed people inside the cabin. I used to visit and spend time in the cabin. Now they don't.
