In Mumbai Central Railways There is local that runs from csmt to khopoli.. In Pune local train. There is local that runs from Pune jn to lonawala. Distance between khopoli and lonawala is only 17kms. I think soon mumbai and pune will merge..
Now it needed upgradation like converting it into MRTS, Making drainage system world class to stop water logging, fencing the whole tracks, adding extra tracks, installing CBTC for increasing frequency, Adding ac local, adding automatic ticket checking machine. Then It would be an world class mass transit system.
Yeah after doing all that, the construction and maintenance cost would be so high that ticket price will go from Rs.5 to Rs.60. Indian train systems are like this because they are cheap. If you want world class services then start paying the same price that they charge on those world class services. Indian trains currently do a great job of transporting millions of passengers for the very small fare that they charge. We should appreciate what we have with us right now.

why cant Mumbai locals and its stations be made like metro and metro station??? Mumbai has this vast local network, why cant we upgrade it to world class level?? if this can be done, Mumbai would get a entire new makeover!!! 👍☺
Because no government would want a real change anywhere in India. Either they are incapable and less smart or just have no will. I think Mumbai already has a vast network of tracks, they can run metro on it or at least those Air conditioned locals with doors. They only give good makeover to malls and hotels. Who cares for people? people also don’t care and never question, they feel proud of their local transport. We are in 2022 and people hanging out of moving trains which too in a major city in India.
Those lines are already very old (100+ years old) and problematic (waterlogging in monsoons) and besides even after metro, there will be a big chunk of population for which Metro will be unaffordable (local trains fair is even less than Rs 10 while Metro charges will be Rs 50+). Mumbai is already costliest to survive and even Rs 40 matter for people when added up. Now the real difference is that cities like Delhi have wide roads, good bus network and secondary transport BUT Mumbai on other hand is almost singlehandedly dependent on trains only.. so the Local train network can NOT be simply eliminated or replaced.. it's better to support it with a Metro system instead.
Metro is something different, stations in metro are placed more closely and serves the people within the city. Both systems are required in my opinion to better serve the city.

You have forgotten about three coach train which was for some times. And the first Double Fast local was run between Jogeshwari to Mumbai Central. These were our favorite train for travel
I had gone to mumbai in the month of December, 2022. We were lucky to ride the local train from Andheri to Church Gate and back in the first class section of the train..... It was an awesome experience... It's sad that in the locals of our Kolkata there is no first class☹️

The original Seimens coaches had FIAT EUROFIMA type bogies! 😲 Why did we replace those bogies with Air Suspension ICF bogies (the ones which our ' blue dabba ' ICF coaches have, the only difference being spring suspension)? They have a horrible stability!
