There is no better channel that has displayed Pittsburgh in all its glory as Dean Bogs Channel. The skill, the care and depth of representation, it's huge. Thank you Dean.
I moved away from Pittsburgh recently and MY, does this make me miss it. Frick is such a gift, and so is this video. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Dean.
Mr bog sir, i am ecstatic that u have continued your neighborhood vids. I came across them bout a year ago and have been heart broken that they stopped. If i was financially sound i wouldve happily volunteered to piggy back u round the burgh to help with your tour of all the neighborhoods. Glad ur back, keep up the great work!
Unbelievable work. I live in California, have no connection to Pittsburgh and I eat these up. My Dad and I have watched nearly every episode. So glad you’re making them again.
@@crewser004 Pittsburgh-born rapper. One of his albums and singles is called "Blue Slide Park" (certified Gold) and one of his other songs, "Frick Park Market" at which he worked. A pic is briefly flashed of him working at FPM during his song near the end of this vid. His mom still lives in the area.
Sooo glad you're back, Bean Dog! What a wonderful video! It's hard to imagine having enough money to be able to give the children of Pittsburgh a park as your birthday present, and it says a lot about Helen Clay Frick that she did so as her gift, coming out as a debutante. We have such a rich history, and the families of our most powerful industrialists (the ones who sometimes broke the strikes and fought the unions) have also given so much, with libraries, museums, universities, parks, and so much more. It's complicated. The historian David McCollough (who grew up a few blocks from Frick Park) described Pittsburgh as "the indispensable city," and I would add that the city's great parks (Frick, Schenley, Highland) are an indispensable part of the city we love. Welcome back, Dean!
Even though you talk about not being born here, you’ve already captured so much of what makes Pittsburgh so unique, as if you’ve been here all of your life. I see it as the hardships that residents face with keeping the city’s identity without forgetting the past or neglecting the future. Pittsburgh has always seemed to keep an okay balance of this, and I miss it so much. I’m glad Nine Mile Run was added, we used to hike to duck hollow through there. Thank you, Dean. Amazing work.
its good to see you back Dean. You were conspicuous by your absence in the recent Hazelwood video. So, your presence in the video adds something to it. I can't imagine what you've been doing these past years to have abandon this project but thanks for reviving it.
Welcome back Dean! If you are looking for video ideas : Perhaps you could do one on the T. I hear that rail is much more environmentally friendly for transportation, perhaps we could inspire pittsburgh to invest more in connecting our neighborhoods via rail rather than being content with sitting in car traffic
This just showed up in my feed again! As one of the trail stewards in Frick, I think you did a great honor with your video. Thank you for capturing these moments and the specialness of the place.
Welcome back my friend, it's been a while since I've seen you and I missed your thoughtful and intricate investigations into the history and culture of the various Pittsburgh neighborhoods. Thank you for the work you do, hope the ankle feels better and ends up not bothering you anymore.
Polished, perceptive, ambitious, eclectic, immersive, really informative and enjoyable. One park, one video, with many facets. It's good to see you back, and looking well.
I was giggling with delight to see you moving so well in the opening scenes, not to mention serving a tennis ball! I'm sure you can still feel the remnants of your injury somehow, and I hope you're not masking any great pain here, but I'm so grateful for your recovery thus far. This episode was a stunning and distinctly Pittsburghian portrait of my favorite park in the city. You have a knack for seeing and appreciating the little details we all miss as we rush through life, and then setting them to a wondrous soundtrack. Your documentary style mirrors the mission of Frick as Helen originally conceived it-- something that makes us slow down, observe, appreciate, and play. Thank you for your keen eye and big heart as you continue making these cherished vignettes of our city! If I may suggest an episode, please have a look at Friendship when you get a chance. It was my first real home in Pittsburgh and I adored the neighborhood (and made tons of contacts there that I could hook you up with). From the plentiful (and gorgeous) street cats to the stunning asphalt art, the quirky and fun-to-film Octopus garden, the interesting Quaker origins, the amazing and lush alleyway display of native Pennsylvania plants on Fredericka, the historic Friendship Avenue Church from 1908, the world-renowned art destination that is the Pittsburgh Glass Center, or even one of the nation's first chiropractic schools (I'm good friends with the owner), there is SO much to see and film here. The story of how those huge Victorian homes came to be and then evolved into what they are today is fascinating, not to mention the scandalous history of the founding families there. Trust me, it won't disappoint you. Check out the website for the Friendship Community Group and see if it piques your interest.
I used to live 100 feet from Frick Park and this made me so homesick for it!! I love the Roller Coaster trail. Also, glad to see they rebuilt the Fern Hollow! Awesome video, Dean.
I spent half my childhood there in '50s and even played hooky from school there. There used to be what we called hobo camps back then and I used be amazed at how the cooked their baked beans in the cans and hot dogs..Some of the hobos were quite creative in their camping skills. They never stayed long in one camp and were usually gone by the time park visitors showed up and I always wondered where they went during the days.
Superb. You know what the Bean Dog moment was? The couple of Gothies answered an intelligent question in a thoughtful way. Right there, l knew l was experiencing a Dean Bog thing.
The music, as always, is amazing, Dean! Thank you for the amazing details of nature -- but also for zooming out: Fern Hollow bridge, Blue Slide, the climate. Elise in NH
I am really so happy you have come back to making this series. I moved out of Pittsburgh last year and gods do I miss home. Thank you Dean, I feel right back at home with your videos again.
Your skills of conveying the beauty of life and it’s surroundings in my opinion are unmatched. Then you interject the notion of humanity. Hearts and minds are captured.
Greetings from Ohio! (Dayton) Current residents owe a great deal to the visionaries of the past. Fortunately many of those were successful industrialists who also had the means to create treasures like this and also believed they should be the ones to make it happen. Our parklands contribute so much to the quality of life for generations. There were others across the country . In this community it was people like John Patterson and Edward Deeds. Thanks for putting this together and sharing it.
Dean, I cannot thank you enough for this series! It makes me excited about Pittsburgh more and more! Also, whatever filter/overlay you have on this video is amazing!
Having only recently heard about it myself, I a bit wish that you mentioned the history of Frick and his many anti-labor tenancies in the steel industry, but focusing on the park and the people of the park made a strong point too
i grew up mountain biking and hiking in Frick Park. I have spent countless hours and thousands of miles of mountain biking in Frick, and i love it! Thank you so much for making this wonderful video :)!
Great job, as always! We lived by the lawn bowling green for several years but never tried it--maybe now that the pandemic has lightened up we should go back. I'm most impressed with the footage of the snake(s)!

Dean, PLEASE KEEP THESE VIDEOS going. You are at a point now where you can revisit a lot of the neighborhoods you covered 4+ years ago.

Dean, you do such a lovely job of, well, making us feel stuff - fragility, loss, hope. Stunning.
