I used 15 gallon grow bags. Zone 5 Chicago. I was puzzled why they were growing in the dark. Not only growing but thriving! And getting such an early harvest was great. The funny thing is it was a rookie error. I started way too early and didn't think they'd grow in the garage. Lucky
I'm in Telladeaga Co. Alabama zone 7B, Frost doesn't come until Halloween, give or take a week. I just sowed seeds for radishes, beets, turnips, kohjlrabi and mustard. Elsewhere, I havbe Hilton cbbage, kale, Red Mustard, Bok Choy, Yellow Heart Winter Choy, Mizuna, Komatsuna, carrots, swiss chard, spinach, and Tatsoi growing. All of my raised beds have hoops for greeenhose plastic, or netting. In my area, garlic doesn't go intio the ground untill mid to late November. I still have tomatoes, pole beans, eggplant, and squash growing & producing, and my peppers are going crazy with production. After frost, I'll clear our my grow bags, and pepper bed. I am going to try to sneak in a winter crop with spinach , swiss chard, kohlrabi, radishes, tatsoi, mizuna, Tokyo mustyard, red mustard, and maybe russian kale. Some winters are mild where I live, some not. It changes every year. I'm thinking about adding a small greenhouse for seed starts, using stone pavers and a feed barrel filled with water for biomass to keep the temperatures above freezing inside it.

In the next few days, I'll be transplanting endive and asorted lettuces into a GreenStalk tower. As soon as I have a little more room, I am going to sow seeds for Late Nagasaki cabbage. My garden isn't as large as yours with three 4x8 raised beds, two 31" x 63" raised beds, two GreenStalk towers, and thirty-two 10-30 gallon grow bags. I'm doing a lot of different plant varieties to determine what grows best for me, and what I like to eat, I have six varieties of peppers growing with abou 36 plants. I had some potatoes growing eyes on them but then they ended up rotting and turning to liquid in my dark pantry drawer. I was going to use them as seeds. I had some fail my first time in garden because a vole or something came under and ate them. I got those sonic beep things and haven't had any more issues in those 8 beds. Made newer four with hardware cloth underneath. My natural soil is very clay. So I used garden soil and potting soil type stuff. Added manure and peat moss first time. when I dug up those potatoes, I threw a couple the creature missed into another bed. They thrived and made me a bunch of potatoes! All of it happened by accident sort of -- I am very new and don't keep a journal bc I am just trying to get started and learn. Anyway, I will keep all your comments to learn from them. I saw that other person here put potatoes in pots in their garage. I have these new organic potatoes and hope to make a pot with them in there and if I can keep it in my garage by the grow lights, that would be so easy. I need to get my frost cloths ready although I don't have good ways to put them up...just janky hoops too small but keep some lift going. This is all so much work! It is also so beautifully rewarding.
@@TexasRivers I use Kellogs raised bed mix, add granular fertilizer and mix in top four inches, then top it off with two inches of Black Cow Maneur. I'm In Alabama, 7B, and the soil is rock hard red clay. Too much work for in ground gardening, at least without a tractor, plow, and jack hammer. Hardware cloth on the bottom of the raised beds will keep the voles out. I had a problem with them, until they became cat food, but not before my onions were devoured. Potatoes don't do well in the southern climates. They need cool weather. I got my best harvest planting them in mid March, September may work well too, but they will need frost protection. Sweet potatoes do better, they like heat, so plant slips in May, and wait about five months to harvest.
Sorrel is a great perennial that is lemon flavoured green, chickens love it, kids love it too. It survives in sw Ontario. I have forgotten potatoes and they keep growing yr after yr.
I live in south Florida my growing season is winter here. I plant late Sept into Oct. I have corn potatoes green beans peas tomatoes black berries peppers onions and I have an orange tree 4 figs and one dragon fruit as of right now. Not a big yard but I'm filling it with food. 😂
I think i'll just wait and plant in early spring because it seems like it's not really worth the extra hassle for such a small window of time to take advantage of.
This is excellent information. I like Agribon 70 more than the 1.5 oz he uses....A-70is 2 oz per square yard.....we definitely need to do this now....right now!!!

I usually plant my garlic and onions in September for the next summer's harvest. By October my yard is mostly a quagmire of mud. Usually. It's going to be 85 today. Never in my life have we had 80+ weather in October. I'm going to pull out a couple summer plants that are done but the rest are going strong: tomatoes, squash, and even melons! I don't remember you mentioning onions so I would add those to my list of things to plant now.
They can be overwintered, but they need to be planted sooner that October in most areas. You are targeting about 6 to 8 weeks before your first frost for planting those, if you want to be able to harvest during the winter.
So glad I found your site. We live in Provo and I'm waiting for my garlic to arrive to get it planted this month. I will track down some mache seeds and give that a try this winter. I built a cattle panel greenhouse this past summer and looking forward to growing with that too.

I have been planting some things over winter with success, but I am finding that a few of the things I plant just bolt in early spring, rather than mature - so they will get half or three quarters and then just flower. I think the issue might be that some cultivars do better than others at different times of the year. Do you have some opinions on this? Some lettuces have worked, others not, some arugula bolted, some spinach. I'm also zone 6a in Ohio (near the Lake). Are their some types you would recommend? Which lettuces? Which spinach? Thanks!
The lettuces I've had the best luck with are winter density and Nevada for over wintering. The best spinach I've found is Bloomingdale Long Standing. I've also had good luck with Melody Spinach.

The plants will need water regardless, but in cooler months, less moisture will transpire out of the plants. So, you need to be careful to not over-water. Check soil moisture by compressing a handful. If it falls apart in your hand, the soil needs moisture. Be careful to not chill plants with watering late in the day in cold months; this will stress the plants.
I've been battling that this whole summer. Between the rabbits and deer they got more than I did. Just picked up some 4 ft stakes and plastic garden mesh to keep the critters out. Not sure if it'll help with the deer though.
I finally realized I had so many pill bugs that would eat my seeds and seedlings. I had to get rid of them and I also put bird neting over the raised bed for added protection.
Super helpful - thank you so much! I hope to try overwintering garlic - By "frost" (vs "freeze") are we talking about mid-30s or when it actually gets below 32? I know sometimes the 2 words are used interchangeably so it can get confusing for me... Here in NYC (zone 7b) it rarely gets to 32 before mid-November. So this would mean having to wait until December 1 to plant garlic?😅
You just need to plant them sometime after your frost but before the ground freezes I'm in Zone 6b and I've planted garlic as late as November 15th before, although I try to get mine in right around Halloween.
I have a lot of squirrels, raccoons and skunks, why do they constantly dig exactly where I plant my seeds ( I think it is the squirrels). Every time I plant the seeds I can almost guarantee the next day they dug in that area. Any help is greatly appreciated.

By that time of the year we have moved into our wet season so it usually isn't necessary. But if you feel like your soil is really dry then yes you could water them in.
I've run into some medical situations that have kept me from being as attentive at my garden. in my garden still the garlic and potatoes root stuff even turmeric. what is the day's count do you know off hand and what happens if I leave them there if I'm not in situation to be able could you be able to necessarily guess you're see if they probably will be over done even. This was a weird 1st year but very learning and can't wait for next year. Any advice?
As long as you live in a warm climate the turmeric should be fine. But if you leave the potatoes and garlic in the ground they will both start to regrow and will be crowded and the new plants will be inferior. Any neighborhood kids that could come give you a hand? Or maybe a friend you could share the harvest with in exchange for the help?
No I wouldn't. Broccoli is fairly hardy but I have found that it often doesn't hold up to cold winter temps. Plus I feel like broccoli does better when planted indoors and then transplanted out later. There just isn't enough sun energy this time of year for them to really get going in the colder zones. Now if you live in zone 8, 9, 10 we would be having a different discussion.

remember that most of the planting you do in October is going to over winter for spring harvest. Radish are frost hardy but not really freeze hardy, so they won't stand up well to the winter weather. I usually try to get the last planting of radishes in about September 15th in my zone 6b garden.

It's a little different situation in the warmer zones. planting now you will be able to harvest during the winter months because you have more warmth and sunlight.
How would you protect fall planted potatoes if all you have to plant them in are grow bags? The tops I can cover, it's the soil around the bags that will be a problem. Any suggestions?
Honestly I wouldn't plant until spring. I've never had any luck getting plants to over winter in grow bags. They are just too exposed and freeze too hard.

Maybe someone will give you a couple small potted plants for your windowsill....maybe lettuce or kale. Bugs can be a problem though...in window sills...but I grew a small rosemary in the window. God bless!

We are lucky that our winter rain/snow really doesn't start until November so we can hold off until late October most years to plant our garlic.

I always miss a few potatoes, but they come up weeks after the ones I plant in the spring
Parsnips. The seeds will overwinter and germinate at the proper time in spring. One less thing to do in spring.

The plants do very little growing during the winter months. I usually stop watering about mid November and they do fine until early March.

Any seeds you plant this late will have to be overwintered for early spring harvest.

I've been battling that this whole summer. Between the rabbits and deer they got more than I did. Just picked up some 4 ft stakes and plastic garden mesh to keep the critters out. Not sure if it'll help with the deer though.
I finally realized I had so many pill bugs that would eat my seeds and seedlings. I had to get rid of them and I also put bird neting over the raised bed for added protection.
Super helpful - thank you so much! I hope to try overwintering garlic - By "frost" (vs "freeze") are we talking about mid-30s or when it actually gets below 32? I know sometimes the 2 words are used interchangeably so it can get confusing for me... Here in NYC (zone 7b) it rarely gets to 32 before mid-November. So this would mean having to wait until December 1 to plant garlic?😅
You just need to plant them sometime after your frost but before the ground freezes I'm in Zone 6b and I've planted garlic as late as November 15th before, although I try to get mine in right around Halloween.

The potatoes are not really controversial. After harvest I always forget some potatoes...and they come up next year

I have a lot of squirrels, raccoons and skunks, why do they constantly dig exactly where I plant my seeds ( I think it is the squirrels). Every time I plant the seeds I can almost guarantee the next day they dug in that area. Any help is greatly appreciated.
I understand. Squirrels or chipmunks dug up my corn seeds and messed up my germination.
Squirrels hate tulle (a mesh fabric). It’s the only thing that has stopped them in my yard.
Try putting wire circular cages around your plants.
It may help.
Plant marigolds around the perimeter. Insects can't stand them

When you get your garlic gloves planted, do you water them after you mulch?
By that time of the year we have moved into our wet season so it usually isn't necessary. But if you feel like your soil is really dry then yes you could water them in.
I've run into some medical situations that have kept me from being as attentive at my garden. in my garden still the garlic and potatoes root stuff even turmeric. what is the day's count do you know off hand and what happens if I leave them there if I'm not in situation to be able could you be able to necessarily guess you're see if they probably will be over done even. This was a weird 1st year but very learning and can't wait for next year. Any advice?
As long as you live in a warm climate the turmeric should be fine. But if you leave the potatoes and garlic in the ground they will both start to regrow and will be crowded and the new plants will be inferior. Any neighborhood kids that could come give you a hand? Or maybe a friend you could share the harvest with in exchange for the help?
Hi Rick, when should I have planted lettuce plugs in my high tunnel for winter harvest in zone 6b. Is it too late now?
If you have the starts then get them in, but normally I plant mine 6 to 8 weeks before my first frost. So for me that is about mid August.

Can I plant in straw bales for overwintering?
You could give it a try, but my worry is that the straw is too exposed and the plants would just freeze and die.

No I wouldn't. Broccoli is fairly hardy but I have found that it often doesn't hold up to cold winter temps. Plus I feel like broccoli does better when planted indoors and then transplanted out later. There just isn't enough sun energy this time of year for them to really get going in the colder zones. Now if you live in zone 8, 9, 10 we would be having a different discussion.

In ground or raised beds, they likely wouldn't survive if you planted them in pots.

remember that most of the planting you do in October is going to over winter for spring harvest. Radish are frost hardy but not really freeze hardy, so they won't stand up well to the winter weather. I usually try to get the last planting of radishes in about September 15th in my zone 6b garden.

It's a little different situation in the warmer zones. planting now you will be able to harvest during the winter months because you have more warmth and sunlight.
Hard to find seed potatoes? Almost every grocery store has potatoes.
I've never had very good luck with store bought potatoes as seed. Most are treated to prevent sprouting so it takes forever for them to sprout.
What kind of NpK ratio for potatoes?
I never fertilize my potatoes. I just add a little compost to the bottom of the trench and make sure my soil is healthy and they always do well.

You can plant them, just be very careful to not break off the sprouts. Plant with the sprouts reaching upwards.

Yes, but they can be a bit problematic. They won't all survive and they are likely to go to seed fairly quickly in the spring.

How would you protect fall planted potatoes if all you have to plant them in are grow bags? The tops I can cover, it's the soil around the bags that will be a problem. Any suggestions?
Honestly I wouldn't plant until spring. I've never had any luck getting plants to over winter in grow bags. They are just too exposed and freeze too hard.

Maybe someone will give you a couple small potted plants for your windowsill....maybe lettuce or kale. Bugs can be a problem though...in window sills...but I grew a small rosemary in the window. God bless!
