    It isn't too late for carrots if you plant a winter carrot, such as the Kyoto Red. They get sweeter after frost and prefer winter's cool weather. I love growing Daikon Radish in the Fall, and any that aren't pulled for eating are left as a winter cover crop to open the soil. Bunching onions can be planted in the fall and left to grow over the winter for very early green onions in the Spring.

      Walking onions; are they the same as bunching onions.
      Usually we plant all onions & onion seeds now and manage to gain several harvests throughout the year, even with the south coastal wet weather. Often leaving some in the raised beds to harvest as & when.

    • @ohio_gardener
      @ohio_gardener Рік тому +2

      @@helnyson4694 No, they are not the same. Walking Onions are perennials, that keep multiplying. Bunching onions are also called Spring Onions or Green Onions, and they are eaten green. Bunching Onions do not form bulbs.

    Insects destroyed all cabbage, broccoli, despite insect netting.
    Animals ate half the raspberries, blueberries, tomatoes (tomatoes despite protective net bags over tomatoes-they chew thru the bags!).
    Animals ate 100% of corn, despite extensive netting.
    Beets in summer developed severe fungus.
    Potato beetle issues
    Zone 5b, partial sun (a clearance in the woods)

    You never seem to have any insect or slug damage, nor any fungus disease.If I grew Kohlrabi without a net, the white cabbage butterfly would ecimate the leaves with caterpillars, thousands of them. From Germany

    • @salpine
      @salpine 2 місяці тому

      I went out every 2-3 days and inspected the leaves for yellow eggs and removed them. Prevented a lot of them just from that. I would check for worms and pinch them off. I found growing nasturtium right next to these crops really seemed to help. You can use a net but still check that under the net. There’s a spray called BT spray that is harmless to us but shuts down worm digestion if they start to eat the leaves. It really minimizes the damage. It’s really about being diligent and checking them. If they are neglected that’s when the cabbage worm takes over.

    I am not familiar with ANY of the of the three leafy greens you mentioned: But the first eludes me. Is the LATIN "Plutonia" or was it "Flutonia"? I assumed that was the Latin, but I can find NAUGHT on any leafy green so named. It seems conclusive that I misheard. Could you please correct me/and or add a list of the plants above, for those of us who are likewise linguistically challenged? Thank you. [Later EDIT] I image searched the plant which followed your words, and it says this is Claytonia perfoliata, commonly known as miner's lettuce, Indian lettuce, or winter purslane, is a flowering plant in the family Montiaceae., which APPARENTLY is a different plant than the "lamb's lettuce" (listed second), as Google says the latter is Valerianella locusta, commonly called mâche or mache; common cornsalad; or lamb's lettuce, is a small, herbaceous, annual flowering plant in the honeysuckle family Caprifoliaceae. I rather assumed the photos was "lamb's lettuce", but it seems that, too, was incorrect. IF anyone (Besides Huw) could educate me, it would be greatly appreciated. Again, thanks.

I cover everything and don’t have any tunnels but join canes together with plastic bottles then cover with scaffold netting. What does 'run to seed' mean?

    • @LittleKikuyu
      @LittleKikuyu Місяць тому +1

      It means the plant starts flowering and then producing seeds. In many plants we want that of course, because we eat the fruit, such as tomatoes or courgettes. However, leafy greens it often means the leaves become tough or change taste and the plant becomes basically inedible for us 😅
