Thanks for posting the list John. It makes me crazy when he doesn’t include a list of what he talks about in the video info. It’s lazy! And he is missing a sales opportunity by not linking out to his specific products - i.e. the seeds he talks about in his video. Not sure why he doesn’t - but I appreciate you doing this! Thank you!

Here in the Netherlands, where kale is such a staple winterfood. It’s common to harvest your kale after the first frost. Because of the frost they taste really improves, it has to do with the kale producing sugars as some kind anti freeze.

I grew Burpee's Curly Kale behind the annual flowers in front of my suburban home north of Detroit for years. I would go out in slippers, shake the snow off the plants, then cut the top leaves for salads and the bottom leaves for cooked dishes. The plants would only die back in about February, but the underground root would send up a fresh plant in April. Wonderful nutrition.

I started growing cilantro micro-greens. It was a flop, so I dumped them in my garden and up they came. I ate them when they were very little, like a micro-green and they were awesome. And it takes very little time for them to get that size (about 4-6 inches high). What goes to seed, just save the seeds and start over.

My first and last frost dates are very close to his (and probably yours too!). It makes it easier to not have to translate his suggested planting times, which is nice. Hope you've been having good luck with your garden this year!

    Alabama here.
Thankyou so much for this video.
I purchased organic pole beans yesterday, in hopes of getting them in the ground
next spring. I planted bush beans this past spring and we had close to 50 inches of rain from January until just a few days ago. Everything drowned.
I just planted the pole beans and will plant snow peas in a bit.
I will plant kale later today, not for us but for the chickens to have great eating during the winter.
This video has encouraged me to look well beyond my thoughts.

@@charleskelm3703 Insect damage might not be as big an issue in cooler weather, especially in cooler regions & protect against groundhogs & rabbits.
You can use nonpoisonous bug repellents like home made sprays of insecticidal soaps made of non GMO vegetable oils + non-detergent liquid dish soaps or castile soaps.
First, spray hard with a hose nozzle to squash & dislodge insects & then follow up with a soapy, oily fine spray to soak & smother aphids, eggs,& larvae if all kinds, so beware of killing beneficial insects in various stages if possible, & hand pick or use alcohol on a cotton swab to get at clusters of aphids, etc.

Luke, you do an amazing job explaining for newbies and suggesting the best options for all levels. Immediately subscribed because other YTers never really taught me what I needed to know. Just watching 3 of your videos has helped me to figure out several of my problems (in NW Arkansas zone 6B) with cilantro, peas, spinach and broccoli never gave good harvest. And NOW I know that they are all heat haters. What??? Your knowledge of the benefits was amazing. Purslane is something I will definitely research and try (I think I had some growing and I thought it was a weed). Thank you SOOO much for excellent channel and content. HUGS!

September is the beginning of our main growing season in South Louisiana! Brassicas, roots, all salad greens, beans, herbs and more. Eggplant and okra are still going strong from the summer garden. This year I'm expecting a second fruiting of sweet peppers and for the first time I'll have fresh tomato seedlings to try for a fall crop.

I am in Slidell, Louisiana and new to gardening. Can you give me some things that should do well planted in grow bags and beds right now or soon. Can they be planted directly in the garden or do I have to start inside? I would appreciate any info you would share. Thanks 😊

    • @hyacinthABC
      @hyacinthABC 2 роки тому

@@kathymcgathy4579 Right now it's still a little hot to plant most things directly in the ground (or bag) but you could try a few bush beans (read the packet to see if they need to be soaked first) and collards and beets if you like them. I have some fall crops in the ground under shade cloth but I started them indoors - broccoli raab and some Asian greens. If you ever want to see my setup, I'm in a community garden in mid-city and I have a pretty flexible schedule. I tend to go there after 5 when it cools and is still light. In a few weeks you'll be able to plant all kinds of salad greens and winter stuff like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, kale and a whole host of others so I'd recommend starting those seedlings now (except for the carrots - I can show you a couple of starting methods for those if you give me your email.) Start them indoors so you can control the conditions. There are some great UA-camrs to help with that: NextLevelGardening and Roots and Refuge Farm are two I follow.

Nasturtiums like 65 to 55 degrees. They are terrific in salads, and bring the pollinators to assist with bean pollination. Have rabbits and deer? Plant nastutiums as a protective border.
Bee balm, and hyssop both are frost hardy if established before frost. They will over winter and get your pollinators regularly as perfinals to your garden. Just place them away from main rows where food will go if you want them as perrinials.

Yep, my lone zucchini plant was a dud. A local farmer teased me by saying, “You know what they say, ‘if you can’t grow zucchini’...” . But to our credit, the eggplant next to it is going crazy!

I spent hours gardening this season. Just as soon the frost was gone I started planning.
I planted tomatoes, peppers, watermelons, cantaloupes, cucumbers, tons of different herbs, lettuce, and spinach. Out of the insane amount of time and money I put in the ground I harvested 7 tomatoes, and a quarter sized watermelon.

Test your soil. We found after a poor growing season we had absolutely no nitrogen in our garden soil. This year the tomatoes and beans went nuts.

@@gabbygertie8709 It felt like I was get punk'd honestly. I added plant food and nitrogen fertilizer to melons, but just weren't having it. The 1 cucumber plant that did well only produced male flowers.
I had I huge, strong, healthy tomato plant. But it absolutely refused to flower, like at all.
And the as for the leafy vegetables and herbs; I learned the hard way that they grow better in the fall here in zone 7

Thank you always very informative video. I plant 2 weeks ago radish, kohlrabi, carrots. So far they look very healthy. I'm also getting ready to transplant broccoli and cauliflower seedlings. I'm planning to protect them using floating row cover when the temperature really get cold.

My night temperatures are in the high 30s to low 40s and frost isn't uncommon this time of year so temperature will probably drop soon. I'm hoping to have success with kale, other leafy greens, and radishes. 🤞🤞

I thought you would mention mache. Here in Montana it's cool enough to plant this wonderful crop now. Days in the 60s, nights in the 40s. Mache is delicious and grows well up to 68 degrees. Can grow all winter if protected under cover. I grow mine in a low tunnel.

What do you use btw your rows to keep grass from taking over? Gardening is my ‘happy place.’ It’s therapeutic in so many ways. It allows me to get out of my own headspace, for lack of a better explanation.
Sadly, I have Lupus, Sjogren’s disease, fibromyalgia, & osteoarthritis combined with neuropathy. As an added hellish bonus, I am currently going a series of tests to find out if I have an impinged nerve somewhere btw my lower spine that shoots down into my hip, right leg, calf, ankle, foot. I’ve ended up in the ER twice since December. Even when this pain is down to a low roar, I’m randomly plagued with autoimmune diseases flare up. These can leave me bedridden, for all intents & purposes, for a week, sometimes longer. My family, doctors, & even neighbors can hardly believe how well my garden grows. When I’m able to get back in the garden, I’m fighting grass btw the rows needing to be removed. I have relapsed back into a flare just trying to catch up. I grow a summer & winter garden plus herb & raised bed.
On July 1st of this year, I started the first of two worm bin composting. Since fire ants are a constant fight in the garden & the outdoor compost pile, I decided to keep them in the laundry room. One bin will be harvested soon. It has the most fertile looking casting! The second bin isn’t too far behind. The first bin has 2lbs of red wigglers. I’ve named that bin the “Group W Bin” as a play on Arlo Guthrie’s Alice’s Restaurant. 😁🤣😂😆
    Any tips are welcome.

It is still 98 degrees in Georgia! The whole state refuses to autumn for me. 😆 I'm fighting back by growing peas, broccoli, and kale in the shade! Shade veg gardens are becoming my forte because of this stupid heat. 😊

Yep, Georgia has been crazy hot this summer. It killed off most of my balcony garden, but my tomatoes and peppers are producing new leaves and flowering again now that the heat has eased off a bit! Hoping to get a second crop since the first was SO bad.

Yes it's definitely hot here in Florida. I have a lot more peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers plants still going and some are producing now. It's weird here with the seasons. We don't always get a real frost. A lot of time during winter, we get a cold weather then the next day it's back up in the 80's. So, I heard that I can grow my peppers and tomatoes all year round.

Very much appreciated you throwing out temperatures of what the plants can withstand. Right now in early September, Northeast Louisiana we are still having 100 degree days, no wonder my tomatoes are acting funny. Is there anything I can do for my cilantro to keep it from dying off?

Valerie- I'm always researching when to plant what in Eastern mid state MS. Seems like if you blink, Spring is gone. Same with Fall! When you think Winter will be over, it lasts into April. Blink again and summer high 90's is here! Doesn't help that I have to keep moving garden due to nasty Nut Sedga. Lol! Hope you're having better success!

I’m in rural San Diego. What I’ve noticed about garlic and onions is it really doesn’t drop below 50 that often in the winter time for us . There’re has been a few freeze days but not many .

My Scarlet Runners and Lima's I planted in spring are still producing a ton. I have some radishes growing as well, I am not sure I planted them deep enough as the roots seem thin and stemmy. I should start some spinach; I do have kale and lettuce going. I am about to to buy some mustard greens after watching this.
I am going to put in some garlic, potato onions, and walking onions this weekend in my....wild area garden, which is sort of an experiemental area for me where I plan to grow some perennial varieties . I am going to plant some perennial kale and sunchokes as well. Not entirely sure the best time to plant them but I'm gonna go with fall.
I also have an overwintering purple broccoli variety I am trying out. I NEVER have good luck with broccoli, cauliflower, or head cabbage. I think I always plant it too close but they just take up so much room.
