  • This week we're watching a movie we both knew nothing about but has been requested a lot, "Train To Busan". There have been a lot of movies on the channel that have made Toni cry. There have been a lot of movies on the channel that have scared Toni to the point where she has come out of her seat. This movie did both! This has to be one of the most intense movies we've ever seen and it had us on the edge of our seats right until the very end!

I like the ending how she said that she couldn't sing because he wasn't there, and how the dad said that even though she doesn't see him he's there still. So that's why she's able to start singing in the tunnel and therefore saving their lives.

@@popculturallychallenged I'm told there are lots of good SK movies, but my wife and I have focuesd much more on their "kdramas" instead. They tend to be 12 or 16 episodes, which makes them "really long movies" in a sense. For some fun with "meta jokes" i'd suggest the show called "Goblin." It features the same actor in the lead role and the fun joke is that he goes to see a movie and gets really scared during it.... and of course the movie is Train to Busan ;-)
A rom-com type one that plays around with the tropes of romcoms to wonderful effect is called "A Business Proposal" and it's just good silly fun.

Many reactors ask the same question "Nobody sees this?" when the infected lady walks through the train car.
In both Japanese and Korean cultures, people are used to "minding their own business" so they usually ignore whatever's going on around them, unless it affects them directly. It's considered impolite to look directly at someone, unless that person is actually talking to you.

This film makes me cry no matter how many times I see it, or how many reactions I see.
The movie isn't truly about zombies, it's about people and the human condition. How, in the worst of times, some of us become selfish and violent and selfserving, while some others will always rise up to the occasion with bravery and empathy, with mercy. And like Sandhwa said, it's about sacrifice, what we're willing to do for others.
The thing is, it's easy to judge from our POV as the viewers, but who knows if the day comes of a calamity such as this, I mean we already saw how some people were during covid, how we will act. Fear is an incredible weapon, and fear will frequently, if not often, turn us into monsters. Who's to say we're so far removed from the COO guy.
I like to believe I would be like Ma Dongseok's character Sanghwa, the big guy in the blue coat, brave and kind in his roughness, or like Suan.
    Great reaction!

A lot of people have commented on closing the train doors - most commuter trains that I've been on like that have automatic doors so it's not easy to close it (You see it when the girl that was bitten opens the door and it automatically closes on its own. I think with that mechanism it won't allow you to make it close any faster unless you set it to manual like the dad did to shut it on the guy and his pregnant wife).
And also in a panicked situation most people would not think to try and close the door behind them as they are running for their lives so it's a bit of human nature at play. In a chaotic situation I've seen people run and almost get hit by traffic because they're not focused on the obvious.
Sometimes, too, the doors on trains are actually pretty difficult to open/close quickly. They require a bit of effort. So a mob of infected rushing at you wouldn't give you enough time to attempt to close it and it was a better idea to just continue on moving forward as fast as possible until safe to close the door.

When he's in the bathroom crying it's not that he was bit, but actually him internalizing the information he was just given. His assistant from the beginning (Kim) called and said the outbreak came from some tech company that was the "centerpiece of their plan". This is letting him know that the dying animals and bad news articles on the computer were related, and the zombie virus is from the same company he pulled funding from the day before. If he had continued to fund the company they would have had the money to properly contain and dispose of the virus without it spreading to more towns, but he pulled the funding to make his boss happy and other investors/companies saw this and pulled their funds as well. The scene is extremely impactful because our main character is hunched over a sink crying as he washes the blood from his hands, both literally and metaphorically.
Another movie I think you guys would like is Before I Wake. It's an amazing story that I would recommend also watching without knowing anything at first.

this film and The Witch: the subversion. are my two favorite Korean films. this launched the male lead in it to international stardom and from what I know he was already a big name. but the witch. was the female leads first big role and it literally jump started her career. the range she hit in that film really showed her talent.
