Yes and no. It's a much more complete narrative taking in the people trying to stop the asteroid/comet as well as the people on Earth who are waiting for it to strike and those who will lose their lives when it does. But.... Armageddon is beyond a doubt more entertaining and rewatchable. I would also say that the CGI was better overall for Armageddon. I saw both of these films when they came out. Armageddon was a popcorn flick, this movie had actual substance. One was a 3/10, and one was an 8/10. This was the 8.
the hardest part was watching the families say GOODBYE with each other. It reminds me of 9/11 when we listen to the audio recordings of the beloved parished during that fateful day make phone calls to their families to say goodbye. This part of the movie really hits me hard.

Kudos to Toni for remembering "The size of Texas". When you get back to the end of the world type movies you may want to check out "The Day After Tomorrow" completely different spin. Great reaction!
In addition to being more believable, deep impact was deeper (no pun intended). The characters were more multidimensional here and not stereotypes. I understand finding Armageddon more enjoyable, but that doesn't make it a better movie necessarily.
This and Armageddon came out around the same time. I like this one for different reasons, because it focuses more on the human impact of a disaster like this versus the action like Armageddon. I like Armageddon, but more for the action.
Great reaction! I'm glad i'm not the only one who gets emotional watching this. I definitely prefer this to Armageddon. Deep Impact is one of my favourite films from 98, and it's in my top 50 movies.
One of the best disaster movies, if not the best. accurate up until the ending when so many people survived out running or riding a tidal wave travelling at eleven hundred miles per hour' Great reaction!'
Dislike disaster films entirely but respect this one…maybe because the director (Mimi Leder) is a personal friend who was majorly supportive as soon as we met. Her husband is in the acting group that I used to work with. Some actor friends called me asking for help to do light and sound and run their play that was opening in two weeks. I showed up and apparently organised them so professionally that they all noticed and commented on it. The second day rehearsing with them they started coming to me to say that I’d given them huge relief of comfort and confidence. Mimi came to alot of rehearsals and most shows. After a couple weeks she took me aside and asked me if I wanted to get into directing film. We always talked technical and she was always asking me opinions on films and techniques which made me feel great. I’d been to film school and concentrated on everything but directing. But I can speak actor language or camerman language or editor language or music language, or whatever, so eventually I directed/produced a dozen plays because every actor kept asking me to. I also became a permanent fixture in assisting acting class and though not an actor I became an actor trainer. I bet if I called her today with a script for film, she would help me. She brought us a lot of press and Hollywood types to see our little play. (It was little but very successful selling out every week for months and actually being bought by another theatre for another run) Morgan Freeman came one night but I didn’t have a real conversation other than introduction. Anyhoo, sorry if that was too long.
This and Armageddon are a good example of twin films. Armageddon ended up the more popular of the two. This one is more scientifically accurate. They're both great movies though.
i dont know how Armageddon was more popular this one is not only more accurate but it is a FAR FAR FAR FAR better movie in all aspects. Only thing Armageddon had going for it was a cast of far more known actors

I actually saw this in the theater in the summer of 1998 with my late wife and another couple. I am absolutely not a person who cries at movies. No offense, Toni! But I shed a few for this one. Seemed like it created more emotional connections with "fleshed out" characters. You cared about them. Armageddon was only sad at the end. Hey, for a funnier space movie, how about "Space Cowboys" from 2000? Lots of comedy in that one.
if you want to get technical, Armageddon was exactly like Deep Impact. Deep Impact came out 2 months before Armageddon. That being said, i highly doubt any copying was going on because both movies had to have been in production along the same time frame if they were only two months apart.
People compared them and some people acted you had pick one or the other but I loved them both. Armageddon was fun and lighthearted and Deep Impact was more serious and heartfelt.
My favourite is The Day The Earth Stood Still with Michael Rennie...1951. A really thoughtful..intelligent script that for once doesn't depict the aliens as warmongers ...in this movie..its humankind that wage war on things they don't understand...a great film
I liked this one more than Armageddon, just by a bit. I think it was because it was more about the people and not just one group of people. It seemed more realistic than the other one too. Armageddon was bigger in explosions and more dramatic but realistically, I just don't think NASA or the gov would turn to a bunch of drillers to save the planet. Yes, definitely watch Independence Day! It's got more comedy like Armageddon so you guys will like that. And excited for The Impossible. ❤

It’s another Astroid going to hit earth movie that came out more recently starring Gerald Butler but it’s from the view point of a every day family trying to survive the disaster, so there’s no hero stuff, the characters aren’t trying to save the world just themselves
I prefer this over Armageddon specifically for its realism. Armageddon is genuinely funny and entertaining, but I'm glad the subject also got the more serious treatment it deserves. Ultimately, I find the issues of survivor selection, widespread destruction, and political calamity more interesting than Out of Element Donny humping a nuke. Besides, it's not as if this is the Threads (1984) of impact events; it's still made for entertainment, just intelligently so.
I'm so sorry I missed the live. Storms came in and no service for a lot of counties. Armageddon was more about the action/asteroid...Deep Impatact was more about the people. Both are great.

Someone else already suggested “Don’t Look Up,” which was a Netflix film, I believe, similar in theme to this, and really, really good, and also thought provoking. For a fun, ridiculous “disaster” movie, please do Sharknado. Popcorn, pop culture, cotton candy fluff. So bad, they’re good. Lol.
Saw this in the theater and it got me big time. Went to see it again and took a female friend to it that was real emotional. (To comfort her 😉) She didn't shed a single tear. Now that I've reached the 50 year mark, that bit about being excluded from the lottery really blows. PS: There is a movie called Disaster Movie that's a little more light hearted.
I agree with you David. I like them both but I prefer Armageddon. Both had great casts. As always, great reaction! I'll be back for your next reaction!
Now you need to watch The Core to complete the trifecta! The Core is basically like if Armageddon and Deep Impact had another dooms day movie baby but it burrowed down in the Earth instead of going out into space lol it'll make sense when you watch it
If you get a chance “WAR GAMES” is an awesome movie! Matthew Broderick & Ally Sheedy . On the edge of your seat. Put in on a poll. I think it is well loved. I seen several reactions to it. 😊 Loving Deep Impact. Right after watching The Impossible 😊❤
As I understand it, Deep Impact was being made when the production company who did Armageddon found out and rushed to get their own "comet disaster" movie out first. That is why Armageddon is a less polished and sillier movie (and seems to have plagiarized many Deep Impact ideas). Deep Impact will always be my favorite of these two.
The ultimate disaster movie. Old movie called "On The Beach". Gregory Peck played the lead role. Terrifying because it came so very very close to being real.
@@popculturallychallenged Aah brilliant I'll watch that! Ooh in that case, slightly darker but still some major belly laughs... "The Long Kiss Goodnight" with Geena Davis and Laurence Fishburne!
I originally saw this movie because it was a disaster flick with Morgan Freeman and Robert Duvall! What else could you want? But this was the movie that put Téa Leoni (Jenny Lerner) on my radar! I've always thought she was very underappreciated as an actress. I loved Madam Secretary (she played the main character, the U.S. Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord). Great reaction, btw!
A fun Comedy Romance movie is "Down with Love" with Renee Zellweger and Ewen McGregor. A brightly-colored, light-hearted homage to the early-1960s sex comedies that starred Rock Hudson and Doris Day. The story follows a best-selling female advice author who has all the answers until a sly journalist playboy starts asking the questions. It also Stars Sarah Paulson and David Hyde Pierce.
Armageddon is more actiony, Deep impact is more about the drama. The stories are similar, but what was focused on the screen was different. I'm gunna go out on a limb and after Toni processes it all she will probably favour this one over Armageddon.
OOOH YAY i’m gonna have to check this out tomorrow. I got to get up early otherwise I would watch it right now. I hope you do get into more of the disaster movies, including the ones that people don’t seem to pay attention to. Like everybody watches Dante’s peak, but nobody watches it volcano. And I really really like the Sylvester Stallone movie daylight.
I hate that gimmick where they try to turn a scientific discovery into a tense moment (like the scientist's failed drive). They do it in Contact also, with Jodie Foster racing around in a car to process a signal.
POP (Post Office Protocol) is an email message transmission protocol used by everyone and their dog. It is still used today by Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird email programs in Windows, and many other email programs besides.
I get why people relate this to Armageddon, but since I haven't seen it (yet), Armageddon instead reminds me more of "Space Cowboys" (2000), in which a bunch of retired astronauts have to go into space to stop a malfunctioning Cold War weapon. Eastwood, Garner, Sutherland, and (Tommy Lee) Jones...what a cast.
The drilling was more realistic, in the other one they said if they were ten feet short it wouldn't work, nuclear bombs don't need to be that precise. But as I predicted, the one you see first is your favorite.
Does pizza (or waffles) ever _not_ sound good? I love the way the real situation is revealed through a journalist who thinks it's a simple case of a politician having an affair. I also love that this movie doesn't insult the intelligence of the audience like the other one.
I think Deep Impact is a better film between this and Armageddon. Though not as action-packed, I think the storytelling and character development is better than Armageddon. Both good movie though. Greenland is another great disaster film similar to this and Armageddon. It stars Gerard Butler.
This movie really got hurt because it and Armageddon came out the same year. Armageddon had the stars, Aerosmith's hits and more an action film. Deep Impact was closer to Godzilla Minus One.

If you like these disaster movies, I highly suggest “Geo Storm & GreenLand”, both are terrific.
I agree with you David. I like them both but I prefer Armageddon. Both had great casts. As always, great reaction! I'll be back for your next reaction!
Now you need to watch The Core to complete the trifecta! The Core is basically like if Armageddon and Deep Impact had another dooms day movie baby but it burrowed down in the Earth instead of going out into space lol it'll make sense when you watch it
I enjoyed The Core. Was it believable? No. But it was a fun, intense ride.
Sorry I missed the live show. Been a busy week.
Toni had me bawling too.
Thank you for your suggestion. Adding it to our list. - Toni 🤓
I like them both, but I say Armageddon was better overall. Like you said, the comic relief was great in that one to balance it out a little 👍
9:22 "that's where I saw him!" -Toni
less pop culturally challenged 😉
The channel is working! :)
The ultimate disaster movie. Old movie called "On The Beach". Gregory Peck played the lead role. Terrifying because it came so very very close to being real.
LOTR first film in 2001, this is 1998. Three years, thank you!!!
"Happy, funny, romance..." You should definitely give 'True Lies' a go if you haven't already guys!
We've watched that one on the channel a while back and really enjoyed it!
@@popculturallychallenged Aah brilliant I'll watch that! Ooh in that case, slightly darker but still some major belly laughs... "The Long Kiss Goodnight" with Geena Davis and Laurence Fishburne!
HELLO KITTY is KILL me complete so great you 2 !" love reaction but his reaction of BANDIT was amazing ... my childhood movie
Yall should add the perfect storm to your list. That’s a good giant wave movie !! And it’s a true story ! 😉
Yes!
Look up seeking a friend for the end of the world. Another end of the world type movie but really funny and light-hearted Tony will definitely cry
"2012" is Pretty Cool .... Massive Special Effects!
I would have to pick Deep impact over Armageddon as it's a more grounded and emotional movie.
I get why people relate this to Armageddon, but since I haven't seen it (yet), Armageddon instead reminds me more of "Space Cowboys" (2000), in which a bunch of retired astronauts have to go into space to stop a malfunctioning Cold War weapon. Eastwood, Garner, Sutherland, and (Tommy Lee) Jones...what a cast.
if anything people should compare Armageddon to this seeing as how Deep Impact came out first
The drilling was more realistic, in the other one they said if they were ten feet short it wouldn't work, nuclear bombs don't need to be that precise.
All great points. - Toni 🤓
The Day After Tomorrow is another great disaster film
I think Deep Impact is a better film between this and Armageddon. Though not as action-packed, I think the storytelling and character development is better than Armageddon. Both good movie though.
Greenland is another great disaster film similar to this and Armageddon. It stars Gerard Butler.
This movie really got hurt because it and Armageddon came out the same year. Armageddon had the stars, Aerosmith's hits and more an action film. Deep Impact was closer to Godzilla Minus One.
I really want to check out Godzilla soon!
