  • In this video I set up the 190 gallon (48x24x38”) plywood tank from the DIY build. If you haven't seen that video, check out the link below.
DIY Plywood Reptile Enclosure (Large Version)
    • DIY Plywood Reptile En...
When creating this setup I really wanted to keep it functional, while also striving to create a natural aesthetic. That said I used a combination of live plants, common reptile supplies and ingenuity to create something which does exactly that. With all of this in mind there were some serious limitations at hand, most of which are discussed in the video itself.
I'm sure I will get comments about it, so I will make a brief mention on bioactivity. Typically when we think natural, we think bioactive. In my opinion bioactivity is not the best option for a 6.5 foot long snake. Not to say that it can't be done, but it's just not as advantageous for an animal of this size. So if you're disappointed that I didn't set this up as a bioactive enclosure, I will discuss more about that in the “Behind the Build” for this set of videos.
A final note that I will leave off on is that if you are new to reptiles and want to get a Kingsnake (my personal recommendation) you DO NOT need to make a set up this elaborate. Sure it looks nice and provides all of the necessary requirements for the well being of the snake, but it's simply over the top. I have kept Dean for over 10 years in setups with fake plants, common supplies, etc. and he never acted strange due to the lack of natural elements. If you want to do something like this, by all means do it. Just know that it's really not necessary unless you want something nice to look at other than the snake.
As stated above, I will upload a final video about this build shortly. There's a lot that I didn't discuss in the DIY build and this setup video that dictated a lot of went down. Anyways enjoy the video!

Love this & Learned a lot! I had a Redtail for 13 years. When I bought Thor he was about 12-13 inches. He grew roughly a foot per year. Looking back I wish I had been a little more creative with his enclosure. Thinking about getting another Retail. This time I plan on building an enclosure for its future growth and size. Thanks for the tutorial! 😎🤔😎

Dude! So first off, the snake is adorable and I'm pretty new to your channel but I'm already in love with all of your designs.
Second, please say yes if Disney ever asks to make a movie based on your terrariums. I keep seeing a group of animals who come out of their cages at night to hang out and get into shenanigans while the guy who builds the tanks, "the Builder" is away.

You should drill a hole beneath every plant and encircle each with a dam of silicone (2-inches in radius larger to the pots). install plumbing for each hole. Its a better alternative than to have water to trickle down into just one drain.

One way you can sterilize large pieces of wood that are too large to boil or bake is to wash and scrub thoroughly. Then you can place them in a vehicle parked in direct sunlight with the windows up. In the summer months temperatures can exceed 200°F. I leave them in there 4 to 5 hours during the hottest part of the day. I've done this with large pieces of slab rocks and after a few hours you can't handle them with your bare hands.

I keep 2 corn snakes in modificated tubs (one of the long side has been removed to glass, by me). I use pots with mosquito mesh too (just not with rubber band, I used zipties), about the digging. But I use springtails, and isopods too, with a bunch of leaf litter, sticks, and branches. I like it this way, cause the snake has some more thing to react (snakes and isopods are not harm to each other, so why not?). These little buggers are so cute, every time when Iam handling the snakes, change watter, adding more leaf, or just watching the terrariums they always pop up, I love them so much. And last but not least less cleaning is nessesary, with the cleaning crew I minimized the cleaning of the snake tubs.
