I love the format of these tests and how you use the zoomed in examples. One thing to improve it even more would to render the video at 4k for UA-cam.
Just so you know UA-cam 4k is still compressed for web viewing so you aren't getting the full quality.
@@scottyzepplinphotography1188 still better than 1080 on a high-res display
Thanks for the comparison. For what it's worth, the 1.4.0 firmware update for the RP now includes 1920x1080 @ 23.98fps. 👍
This is the best breakdown comparison video out! I’ve been looking at the rp for a few weeks and these tests showed and answered all the questions I had thank u 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
All I can say is that I shoot mostly in the conditions that you focus on here and you’ve definitely reinforced that I made the right decision 5 years ago when I switched from Canon to Sony! Thank you for your efforts! 😃
Loved the test especially the DR comparison..Im about to make an upgrade from a Canon 60d and this kind of video really helps. Thanks to you guys and Jaden.
I go to EOS RP from A7M3 for the color and the flip screen.
you guys make a great team. i really enjoy listening to you.
that's really encouraging to hear drew. thanks for making it worth it to make these videos!
I’ve never had to bring back an image 2.5 stops in either direction and if I did definitely deserve to have my camera taken lol.
its seems you never took a portrait against sunset for instance, without reflectors, or flash... theres always an instance where you need to reconver either harsh shadows, or extreme bright areas.
Romulo Santos wow so many excuses. If thats the case then you are either a very unskillful or don't bother to learn- fill in flash, reflectors, soft light from strobes - the options are endless. A good photographer that need to shoot potrait at sunset definitely knows what to bring to get the job done. Whether an original equipments or a "make-shift" ones. As long you get the job done. Man... its a basic knowledge as a photographer. When shooting potrait at sunset/backlight, you always bring reflectors or strobes. Geez. It is so basic.
same here, not a single time. I think I did 1.8 stop at the max. And very few times above 1.2
I never get disappointed of my A7m3. BTW great video!
Thanks so much. Its nice to have someone other than my Mother that likes our videos. Just kidding. Thanks for your support.
right? I've seen video after video of comparisons agains the a7iii and every camera comes short every time!!
Thank you for this video, thinking to buy a7iii but im a canon user and also thinking to buy the rp with lens with the same price combined to that of the a7iii.. Thak you for this video.. Questions answered. And by the way, new sub here.. Hope to see more vid for the rp and the sony a7iii
Thanks for this video, love the opening so much. My fiance linked this video because we're looking at the Sony A7III but I'm an old-school canon gal, so I'm being a stickler to him about us getting the Sony. This video was really good to show the differences for me. Also, the fact that sony apparently has been in the mirrorless game longer than canon, which shows.
After this video, I think we'll be getting the sony, and it's on sale right now at the same price as the Canon ESR.
Thanks for the comparision video...i was waiting for it...i am also eager to know how these cameras perform using single point and Zone Autofocus...
Even after a year the A7III is still better than most new cameras from Nikon or Canon. Really happy with mine which I bought as soon as the preorders started. No regrets whatsoever.
Thanks for sharing with us! We wanted to see how it compared against the one of the newest full frame cameras on the market.
Having owned both cameras (still have Canon EOS RP but my Sony body is A9) I love colors coming out of RP, and the combination of EOS RP with Canon 35 1.8 RF 1:2 (not with 24-105L RF as 24-105 is heavier than RP body) makes for a great light and small kit to take with anywhere. Love it in low light too. Not for things that move of course, but for stationary objects, I enjoy it. I also find Jpegs out of RP very attractive, but that's individual...
Interesting combination! Curious why you went with the RP vs X-T3 w/23mm f/1.4 lens? Fuji's are the "goto" for my friends who shoot one system for their professional work and have a "personal" system for fun.
BROis having owned xt3 and 23/1.4 up until very recently, I used that combo as well. In fact I had both at same time. Here’s why rp +35/1.8 is better: image stabilization, 1:2 macro and the noise is significantly lower at high ISO’s than on xt3. Xt3 which I had from day 1, pic falls apart at iso6400 and above in low light. Rp is much better, at least to my eye, based on how I shoot of
Course. Xt3 also slows down autofocusing in low light. Rp is rated at ev-5 (with f1.2 lenses) so with 1.8 it is likely around ev-4. It sees in a dark. Great camera/lens combo
To take at night. Not that xt3 is bad it is very good.
@@DmitryBrodsky007 thanks for the insight, appreciate your perspective! I agree about X-T3 in low-light, I've had same issues. Большое спасибо ;) В каком штате вы живете?
Nice comparison, I own both these cameras. Some important things left out that should be said. Things like the RP only having a 1/4000 shutter while the a7III has a 1/8000. That alone is huge if you are buying fast primes and shooting wide open as I do, unless you want to be stocking up on ND filters. The RP also lacks a mechanical shutter, only has EFCS, which can be annoying. The RP also only has 1 card slot and no image stabilization while the a7III has two and 5 axis IBIS. However, the RP is much cheaper, performs well enough with great Canon colors, and you get access to the RF lenses, most of which are far too expensive but can be rented.
which one do you think would be best suited for wildlife photography amateur level tho?

acould you do a rerun of this video with the updated rp's firmware?
How are you reviewing images for RP. I can’t get RAW files to open on my MAC. No one has support for the CR3 raw files.
Great job❤
Shouldn't you be comparing the EOS R with the A7III? Same price point?
We had a hard time figuring out what to throw up against the RP because of its low price-point. So we stood it up next to the A7III, which we think is probably the best base-line full frame camera out these days. Not a completely direct comparison, but interesting enough.
@@angryoaf The RP and Sonya7iii given it release date would be the most suitable.

Canon R series can use with adapters the EF-S lenses designed for crop, the R / RP simply auto-detect the EF-S lenses, so from video perspective there are options there.
This is a great video as I'd been looking at a7iii for a while but hesitated due to the price. I've only recently had a look at the Canon which falls within my budget, but needed more info. I'll very likely get the Canon, it's for personal use only and the price is really unbeatable. Thanks so much!

Did you guys campared the 1080 of the rp with the 1080 of the sony? Ive heard the 1080 of the sony is no good.
The video AF test on the Canon RP looks like contrast detection and not DPAF. Was the video shot in 1080 or 4k (since there is no DPAF in 4k)?
Amazing work guys
Thank you so much for this very informative & fair video comparison really love how detailed the information is,will wait for the Canon EOS R vs A7iii if you guyz gonna make it in the future !! Eventhough the Canon is kinda abit crippling against Sony in IBIS,dynamic range,AF,frame speed etc,..but the color in Canon for me is kinda more pleasing and it is what i need for my current workflow i guess,...totally waiting for the EOS R vs A7iii comparison,...
You're welcome! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. We will definitely try to make the comparison between the R and the a7III in the future
Great review, the objective analysis paid off. I cant help but comment on the A7iii body only, it is exactly double the price of the EOS Rp body only in Canada for what it's worth.
Good point. It is interesting to see if paying more money makes a difference. Thanks for watching.
Slanted is in the name.
The a7iii , in video, has the option to shoot Super35. Since the RP shoots video in crop, it would make a good comparison to see both in that test. Crop vs crop.
Good point. Thanks for bringing that up! We will consider that for future cameras that we pit against this one.
The one plus for the Canon is that it has an affordable 35mm 1.8. It boggles the mind why Sony has yet to release a lens like this in all of its years.
One fun fact for the Canon is that it lacks an affordable kit zooms. It boggles the mind why Canon'd emphasis a cheap and small body paired to mind-blowingly huge(and terribly expensive) zooms.
How about the stripes in the mirrorless cameras ??
I can’t decide between the canon 80d, lumix g85, Sony a6400, and the Fuji T X30 for 1080P video I know you probably won’t respond but if you see this please help.
Is the Canon Dual Pixel Auto Focus available when viewing through the EVF? On my Canon 6D2, I need to use Live View in order to achieve face detect. That's I the reason that I am transitioning to Sony. Eye AF is stupendous and Animal Eye-AF is absolutely wonderful for shooting pets...
I heard that the eos rp had a new firmware update so that you can shoot at 24fps in 1080p doesn't it??

i research for gimbal those days! check if you like my last video in very dark place, hammam exactly!
This is awesome! I'm just wondering if there's an update for this comparison after the Firmware updates for the RP? thank you!
A7iii hands down. I was thinking about Canon RP, cause I got some Canon EF glass, but now I'm 101% for Sony A7iii with Sigma MC11. Old EF glass works better on Sony then on Canon 5D and RF with canon adapter.
In terms of resolution, yes: My EF (L) yielded very sharp results in conjunction with a MetaBones smart adapter on My A7r (first gen.)
But the AF was intolerably slow. I expect for Canon EF lens / Canon R(P) combination with a native adapter to focus much faster. In theory, at least.
@@LeoInterHyenaem Seen some footage on YT with MC11, and most of the lenses are acceptably fast, not Tamron though :(.
@@DentargPL That's curious… Apparently, the current A7(r) -series and MC11 firmware have gone a long way since My A7r and MetaBones combination…
In the beginning of the video you talked about increasing the Sony exposure by a 3rd of a stop. Did you shoot with the Sony over exposed, and test lowering the exposure from there? How is that a far comparison? Are Sony meters off?
We exposed by the incident meter on the Sekonic, setting both cameras to the exact same ISO, shutter, and aperture. Camera manufacturers are not always truthful about the sensitivity of their cameras; so sometimes two camera will be exposed the same way but one will be darker. Typically Sony cameras are darker than other brands. Rather than leaving the images darker, we simply push them in post to match the brightness, and we like to mention it in the video so we're being open and honest about what is happening.
Pros looking at ISO noise: go with the less noisy camera, looks cleaner
Instagram: yeah let's put some heavy noise
I think RP vs A7 II would make more sense actually, they are much closer in specs.
I was sorta thinking the same thing here. Seems to be quite a miss match.
They wouldnt dare... the a7ii is garbage... the low light performance the AF cant match the canon's dpaf
Canon keeps up pretty well, if considering price tag, Sony combo cost 1000€ more than Canon combo (with EF-R adapter).
I used a canon rp for live performances this weekend and the lag in it would preview a different shot then what i took . Honestly for most live action it would be unusable
Yikes, we didn't try at live action but thanks for sharing this information!
I have a lot of live action shot using M50 with 85 1.8 and I have 90% usable sharp photos. Don't blame your gear, blame yourself for not using it correctly.
@@PortraitOfyou857 Of course, a true sniper hits his target with a single shot.
But then, people will start to compare it with the machine guns that shoots faster, cheaper, and perhaps more practical.
So it might not the "discomfort" that people complained. It's just that some of the cheaper than this shoots faster, and they wanted to know the truth why should they opt with this one.
Robert Bardon lol love how much you gather of my photography skills based on a comment , no need to get personal over a camera brand dude , the camera shows and freezes the preview on a different frame then what is actually captured , possible it was a setting maybe and i didnt have issues with focus, i shoot 20,000 photos a weekend tethered to a computer and have no issues with a 6 year old 5d iii

Excellent comparison. Thanks for the video.
Thanks again for this helpful review. Moire, Moire, Moire (07:59 on her tummy for example) - don't underestimate the moire on the Sony. I use the A7III a LOT (for both photos and video) and mostly it's a highly practical and cost effective camera that gives decent results and is pleasant to use, BUT the moire is a very real problem (for me (before the bozos start yacking - your mileage may vary etc, etc)). If you're considering getting the A7III I would definitely try to get to do some hands on testing for the sort of photography you mostly do. Yes moire can be improved in post but that adds to time/cost and there are still occasions when it can't be sorted, so you need to be looking at shots 100% on reasonable screen before you can safely sign them off (again IMHO). Hope that helps somebody. Thanks again for these reviews and comparisons.
Sounds like you should consider an upgrade to the A7R III if moire is a huge problem for your work
@@brois841 Yes, I think you're right - do you have the A7RIII yourself? Can you comment on whether the moire is a non-issue for that camera?
@@brois841 yeah sir, you wrote that so casually, like it is that easy, and even hobby photographers who don't want to spend too much and too often on photography equipment...
@@staLkerhu well if you're having issues with moire, chances are you probably aren't just a hobby photographer or you have special needs which may require more specialized equipment. It's sort of like complaining that your lens can't give you proper macro shots; guess what, then get a macro lens (yes, there's a cost associated with that). Lastly, there are always ways to do things cheaper if you're on a budget or don't depend on the equipment to make a living. I don't do much macro, but have a few older manual Canon FD lenses for that which can probably be had for $50 or less. If macro were super important to me, I'd spend $1k on the Sony macro lens.
Hi there, do you still need help translating to spanish? Amazing work by the way, love your comparisons, discovered them today because I am looking for a new mirrorless camera
Should have read the comments before I watched this. That’s 12 minutes of my life I’m not getting back. Thinking about getting the RP and this hasn’t helped one way or the other 😖
How can I help translate
Good video and info. I own these cameras. The RP has more reliable auto focus eye detection. With regard to Sony bodies, for some reason I prefer the Sony A7RII--the thinner body may be the reason. In any case, the RP is excellent. It is not the camera that the Sony A7RIII is, but for they money the RP is amazing.
As for nomal taking still photo i think the RP set the right exposure not too dark and bright. As for sony is little dark but acceptable. See how you play with it. Still shot picture RP i go for it.
Yes, they are both acceptable and easy exposure edits or color preferences can be made in raw or lightroom, etc.
which camera i buy for photography
nikon d7500 vs cannon eos rp ??
I think that Canon is a more future proof lens line so I would go with the RP with RF glass.
She's bangin
These two cameras are in two classes. Canon is affordable and the Sony is over priced. Because of this Canon kicked ass.
9:35 - if Canon EOS RP was recording in a 4K mode, then it used contrast-detection autofocus only (dual-pixel autofocus is available only in 1080p mode). I bet that was the case.
Btw these two cameras which is good for sports Photography, and affordable?
The dynamic range on RP is really disapointing by 2019 standard, it's more like 2012 level. However it's very affordable and you get modern foucing and tracking technology, with a super lightweight body. If you come from an old 5D or 6D model, it's still a step up.
Wow. At 6:30, the older guy, "...which surprises me about Sony, I always felt like Canon was a little better with ISO than Sony is." What world are you living in? This was just one head scratcher but there were lots more littered all over the entire video. I have a hard time seeing this channel as any remotely authoritative source to look to for unbiased reviews after a statement like that.
@Arvid Kracht So does every sensor to some degree. Signal to noise ratio is quantifiable and every measure I've seen puts every Canon sensor behind every competing sensor in it's size and age. It's been that way for years - at least as far back as 5DII.
@Arvid Kracht it's actually shocking how little the color is affected the a7iii with the iso up. Of course it still is shifted and degraded, but less of an extent than almost any other camera. Been stated over and over in reviews. also what other full frame besides the a7sii is better in low light?
@@burritobrosvideos8060 Do you have a source to back that up? DP Review states, "High ISO noise performance in Raw remains around one stop behind the Sony a7 III"
www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-eos-r/7
Additionally, regarding dynamic range they said, "Overall, dynamic range is good, but trails most current full-frame cameras on the market."
www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-eos-r/8
On the plus side, the EOS-R does show less banding than the Nikon Z6. By some accounts though it has slightly more banding than the A7III (see Tony Northrup's review).
Which one is good canon rp or Sony a73 or fujifilm xt4
Of those 3 cameras I would buy the Sony a7 III or I would step up and get the Canon EOS R.
Is that the 2200 $ Zeiss lens on the sony against a 1000$ lens on canon?
at 8:09 or so, when the sony focus test pictures came in...look at the colors compared to the canon. I thougth that sony a7iii now has better colors, but there is a significant difference...
here skin looks so much nicer on the canon, not that green-grayish...
Look at the image quality test for color. The focus test is not a good example of the color for each of the cameras. Cheers
The Canon RP, pretty much has the same sensor as the 6DmkII, which isn't particularly a good sensor, when it comes to dynamic range. In the end you get what you pay for.
Yes, you get what you pay for is pretty much the answer here! But for some people they might not need much and might not want to pay that much either.
Why not compare the R to A7III... comparing it to RP doesn't make any sense to me
Confused me too, the R ans A7iii similar price, RP is £800 cheaper
Came to say this. Its as if bashing on the cheaper RP is just too tempting to resist for these youtubers
Probably because a side of the video option the RP is a great camera for photography.....
I can only think they are paid to plug the RP.
(If you say it isn't, I believe you. But it sure sounds like you are)

I think out of the list of cameras the Sony a7 III is a great choice. You might want to consider a Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 lens. It would be a great companion to that camera.
@@TheSlantedLens Thank you for the valuable information, I was even looking out for a budget friendly lens, should I go with the kit lens or only body
In the ISO test we clearly see that the Sony has a darker exposure. Would have liked to see the Canon at ISO 3200 compared to Sony ISO 6400 and the same exposure settings. Or maybe raise the Sony ISO 6400 exposure to the same level as the Canon by one stop. Not trying to defend the Canons sensor, but it would have been interesting.

Hi. Is Canon RP weather Sealed?
Good question. Here is what I found online, "the RP has equal weather resistance to the 6DII/80D/90D". See if you can find more info.
For shooting wedding rp or 80d ?
This decision is based on size and lenses. The industry is moving toward mirrorless and Canon is putting their emphasis on RF lenses. You are better off to invest in the mirrorless camera because that is where the technology is in the future.
I would 10p% switch to Sony if they got a fully articulating flip OUT screen and a fully touch screen
What mod did you use while making the canon rp video?
Not sure if you are asking about focus mode or video mod. Please clarify.
@@TheSlantedLens While shooting canon rp video, did you shoot 1080 in video mode?
Why do you compare RP to A7 iii when the RP cost near half price of the a7 iii?
Why compare canon rp instead of canon r? They are after all the same price as the A7III
When this video was made the Canon R was not in the same price bracket. The prices have changed since then. The RP has similar specs to the Sony.
The RP is on the market for 899 Eur with the 24 / 105 cheap Aversion. For that money a great option!!
I really wish you did this with the Eos-r because that’s what’s comparable! The Sony is a 2000 dollar camera the rp is a 1300 camera! The canon Eos-R is 2000 dollars same as the Sony a73 that’s what you do a comparison of. You don’t bring a camera 700 dollars cheaper to compare. I’m not a Sony or Canon shooter but what were you thinking! I had to give you a thumbs down for this one. To everyone reading this. The canon Eos-r is so much better than the Eos-rp as it’s meant to be. The Evf the dynamic range the quality of the video and options in 1080 which does 60 FPS. The Sony A73 is an amazing piece of gear and by no means am I bashing it. I don’t shoot either of these camera brands. I have no “bias”
I'm literally deciding between these two cameras right now, so this video works for me. Maybe its hard for you to understand but this is actually a useful video.
Burrito Bro's Videos really? I’m a professional photographer and I can help you make that decision. If you are a working pro. Get the A73 or better yet a 5d mark iv DSLR. You need the extra card slot. If you are an amateur and never had a pro body before. Get the Eos-r if you insist on getting mirrorless. However DSLR WILL DO YOU JUST FINE. save money get a 5d Mark ii used for 400 and couple good lenses. Which is what you really need. You can not compare a Honda Accord to a Toyota Corolla. You should compare it to a Camry. Those two cameras are not made on the same spectrum and this video was lazy. Quite simply because this is what he had. Rent the camera bottle one of you have to for a couple weeks and do a proper comparison between bodies with equal or similar specs.
Very well executed comparison, but why use the RP with the crappy 6D ii sensor instead of the EOS R with the 5D iv sensor? The A7III and EOS R are also same price, vs RP which is $700 less.
