Doc explains why he tells new lawn owners to "chill" the first year and not freak out over weeds in the lawn. They can actually have beneficial factors. New lawns need to establish without being constantly attacked with weed killers and preemergents. - Навчання та стиль
You are AWESOME, I needed this! Got my new Sod last AUgust and theres weeds growing now! I aint gonna sweat it now.
So great to hear. Installed new Zion zoysia sod three weeks ago. Now I have some weeds coming up and my landscaper says to put weed killer but one of the weed guys I’ve talked to says don’t put anything until next June.
Thanks Doc, I'm keeping my weeds in my baby lawn. It's nice to know I'm not making a mistake letting it be
I'm in Phoenix arizona and we are in the 70s right now, my bermuda grass is waking up I have PGF complete and balanced coming in the mail tomorrow along with dirt booster. I'm going to put down PGF balanced once my package comes I will scalp 2 weeks later and put down PGF complete and wait for 80 degree weather to put down dirt booster
Thanks Doc
My Bermuda is looking sharp using the Anderson products
Height of cut is .6 inches
Using all products from warm season grass calendar 👍
Doc I see borrowed some of those fabled "bird boxes" from Augusta National for that last shot of putting on the green. 😎
Hey Doc. Your Lawrenceville neighbor. Sad to see the forecast is dipping us back down to freezing. I’ve got great green up with your jump start program. I think I’ll wait for final scalp and green shocker. Is that solid? Check your 10 day up there in Athens. Please let me know if you got any advice.
So true. The easiest way to improve clay soil ( i could bake pots using my heavy clay soil)
Is biomass and let the microbes do their work for you.
Hey Doc!!! 😀😃
Hay Doc can you send the video on how to make the compost for your garden? Thanks
I got 2015 model Toro 22in bag all-wheel drive I love that lawnmower I got two of them that I used on lawns like that
Cool season fescue guy here . I overseeded in fall and I’m now about to put down pre emergent and I have done this before. Technically you can get away with a full grow season of fall and come back in spring and put down pre emergent. Just be careful of the bug damage
So, I have already seeded my fescue, but weeds are coming up, itbeen just three weeks, can I apply pre emergent late October or wait till spring?
Hey doc lawnmaster here use black jack bermuda grass it's can handle some shade. Good job from lawnmaster's paradise.
I also have Black Jack seed, on my third year or third season of seeding with it. Having better luck this year with it due to it died in one area I think due to bad soil. I have 3 major weeds growing., so I feel your pain and success.
Hey doc, in your videos about pre emergent and pgf balance you say you do a light application of the balance. Do you mean you do it at the bag rate or lower than bag rate?
Why not spray PGR on the new house lawn to assist you in keeping up with the mows and height?
4k FTW, thanks Doc
What brand of fescue seed did you put down back here? I tried TT tall fescue and didn’t like it because it was too fine. This blade width is more like my already established fescue.
Can you do update on mattresses
I put down 1/2 setting, granular preemergent at the beginning of Feb. I’m thinking it’s time to spray my Dimension from the 20:1 spray bottles. My yard is small, 3000 sq ft. Please help me with the proper amount to put in my spray bottle😊
What if its dollar weed? I had new zoysia installed about 10 days before that nasty cold spell at the end of December here in N Fla. If you have dealt with it you know how hard it is to kill.
What if I have already put down pre emergent on my lawn that was established last September? Will it damage it?
"Weeds" are not really weeds at all but they are a good indicator of what's wrong with your lawn. We have an abundance of lambs quarter and amaranth in our area. Both considered "weeds". Amaranth is an ancient grain that's gluten free and lambs quarter is a member of the spinach family. Both delicious at any stage of growth.
I have followed you for several years. Your lawn calendars are fantastic and my yards in Oklahoma and Texas have had fantastic results using the lawn guides. I have moved to the Houston, TX area and am trying to get my yard established. I have bermuda (think it s a hybrid) in my yard and it is being infiltrated by St Augustine. I would like to slow or remove the St Augustine. I have mowed the yard short and am pulling the runners out. Do you have any suggestions on how to treat the St Augustine?
Why don’t you like the st Augustine ?
I was wondering if you will be selling your reel mowers?
Thanks Doc. Rabbits have killed large portion of my yard. Down to the dirt. Do I have to replace the soil? Rabbit urine and poop.
i have a new tall fescue lawn and bermuda is trying to take over. what can i do. bermuda is not a bad grass it just dont do well because of my tree. so i decided to go with a tall fescue and suggestions
My property has sod layed and 2 years later it’s mostly dead and bunch of weeds what should I do? Should I over seed and fertilize it and just water it constantly to try to revive it? I like in Canada so year round care isn’t possible
Should you take care of a crabgrass or leave that also?
Hi - what rate are you applying DGL at?
My sod was laid last August when we moved in. I have weeds and ball spots. Don’t know what to do. I live in central Texas. Thinking of getting a company. Any advice? Thanks
Doc, please show how to deal with moss mixed in your grass. Thanks!
Quicksilver
Off topic question…I did a Annual Rye over-seed in the fall. I have scalped it and sprayed with image. It’s still there. Any advice on transitioning back to Bermuda?
Just scalp it and keep it short. The heat will finish it off.
What about zoysia sod that was laid last year (May 2022)
You will be fine. You've had a full season.
@@HowTowithDoc how about Zoysia seed that was seeded in April. I am in North Jersey.
Why are you stepping on the un-mowed lawn as you walk?
***Grass Emergency Question***
Hey doc, I just sprayed my weeds using Negate and used the blue die to show where I sprayed.
I was going to use a local company (won't name names) and I cancelled the service, but my wife came home today and noticed their sign on our yard.
It's been hard to get in touch with anyone to find out what happened.
The person said they sprayed a pre and post emergent (which I already sprayed post emergent).
I don't know if they actually sprayed or not - you would think seeing a bunch of blue spots you wouldn't touch the yard.
******I was going to follow your spring system with the scalping, pre-emergent and 10-10-10 fertilizer.... but now I don't know what to do. ******
I'm in Woodstock GA, so I have bermuda on one side and zoysia on the other (landscaped area last August).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Sounds like something Top Turf would do….
@@maxstrains This was actually Weed Man. Ridiculous! Now I'm stressed out and feel I can't touch my lawn.
As long as the lawn is established it should be fine in about 4 weeks. Maybe a little bit of damage but both grasses are pretty tough.
@@HowTowithDoc Thank you. Can I put down my own granular pre-emergent and continue following your suggestions or should I not put anything else down besides the 10-10-10?
@@HowTowithDoc any additional insight?
1. Can I scalp my lawn?
2. Can I lay down my granular pre-emergent now?
3. Can I put down the 10-10-10?
Thanks in advance.
@howtowithdoc what's the benefit of a granular (Green Shocker) vs spray solution
(Super Juice) if they're both providing the same thing essentially? Both are fast release, both have humic etc... I get SJ is 14-2-4 at 1 cup per 1500 sq ft, but 7-1-2 at 3,000 sq ft equal to that of GS.
What am I missing here?
SJ has a bit more... sea kelp and micros. GS is just super fast for someone wanting a 10 min app.
@@HowTowithDoc Thanks for the response!
Hey Doc, I noticed you only seem to have small weeds. What if I have aggressive weeds like goosegrass and crabgrass on my new 2-month old sprigged zoysia lawn? Wouldn’t letting these kind of weeds grow threaten the establishment of Zoysia?
Spot treat them only but yes those are very aggressive.
@@HowTowithDoc ok cool, thanks!!

HELP!!! We now have a large dog who is making my yard into a race track. What grass or ground covering can I use to help the area recover. Thanks
We lost that Race - We have a Corner Lot with a Backyard w/Chain Link Fence that borders a Street. Bermuda did’t grow in the Path they wore down along the fence. Then the dirt continued to be worn and push into the fence bottom.
* then, beside the poop - you’ve got the digging that they do if you have moles or gophers.
It is what it is; all you can do - is all you can do.
Hey Doc do you know how to get rid of rescue grass in a Bermuda lawn?
bermuda is a very dominant grass and it will choke out fescue. i have a tall fescue lawn and bermuda is growing in it
@@kennethsmith3073 rescue grass is a grassy type weed. I don’t have fescue. I’ve done research and can’t find any way to get rid of rescue grass and it spreads quick and heavy. Everything I’ve seen says to pull them or keep them mowed short which I do keep them mowed short. I spent a couple of hours pulling them one day and a week or 2 later they are growing back even stronger.
Urgent please help Doc!
Basically a builder forgot to maintain my new sod (Bermuda) over the summer. It all went to hell with a ton of weeds and extensive damage to the sod. Approximately only 20% is ok, the rest is now weeds and bare soil. I planned on overseeding but I guess it’s advised not too since it’s a hybrid and I shouldn’t apply pre-emergent since sod is new. I’m stuck, please help
He’s got a series of videos if you dig back. Something titled “worst lawn ever” or something where he brings back a Bermuda lawn overgrown with weeds
Morning Doc! I have 2 week baby zoysia sprouts, and lots of crabgrass, nutsedge. Can I spot treat for these aggressive weeds?
Look at DRIVE herbicide we'll be doing a video on the same subject this week. it is "labeled" ok to apply for new seedings on zoysia
@@HowTowithDocMuch thanks!
Too late lol. Last spring was my lawns first spring and I killed all those weeds lol . Damn
You’re not getting your golf green short enough
We won't until frosts are gone.
I live in LA and my lawns see mostly shade and the grass is st Augustin and I want to get rid of it and plant a better looking grass!! Do you have any suggestions? Thanks for all your work and videos!!
For warm season really ur only options are what u have, zoysia, centipede, or Bahia grass. But even they want at least 5hrs of sun to look decent. So might want to try cool season grass
@@dylan8285 Thanks!!!
Yeah I have a customer that wants me to go hand weed and feed and a new Bermuda lawn I told him no sir that will not happen you got to wait I think he's snuck behind my back and try to do it his way it's not my fault see what happens
