    For watermellon you must wait for the first two tendrils to dry and the stalk to go a little bit brown.

    • @johnliberty3647

      and you just demonstrated why I spend more time reading comments than I do watching the videos... and I watch the entire video twice.

    • @violetraal5383
      @violetraal5383 4 роки тому +3

      Yes this method works very well, the tendril or tendrils ( somtimes there is one sometimes there is two)closest to mellon should be totally dry and brown. The stalk will not be dry yet but it starts to get that aged woody look. The tendrils tells it best. Pick it when totally dry.

    What I've learned about knowing if a watermelon is ripe is. There is a tendrill that grows on the backside of the watermelon, it's a little squiggly tendrill, anyway when it turns brown the melon is ready.

    Tipically watermelons are ripe when the stem attached to it turns brown.

    • @wendieo5146
      @wendieo5146 4 роки тому +18

      Not the stem... but the curly tendril closest to the stem dries up and turns brown when the watermelon is ripe.

    Have you tried Overnight Refrigerator Oats? Many recipes variations available but basic concept is...

Ingredients:

1 ¼ cup oats or any oats that are not quick-cooking
1 ⅓ cups milk or almond/coconut or oat milk
1 cup yogurt (any flavor)
    2 tablespoons Chia seeds (also try: flax seed, any chopped nuts,
    coconut, raisins, chocolate chips, Nutella, peanut butter)
    2-3 cups fruit
    Honey to sweeten if desired
    Instructions:
    * In a large bowl, combine oats, chia seeds/nuts, yogurt and milk
    * Layer fruit & yogurt mixture in containers - small mason jars work great
    * Seal and refrigerate overnight, Serves (4)

    the yellow on the melon can be misleading sometimes, I believe they are best pick after the tendril at the fruit dries up.

    Saw a video on "living traditions homestead" last week where some of their corn was blown over also. They said they just assumed a loss but found that it "corrected" itself in a few days. I bet there is an "old" farmer nearby who knows. Old timers are usually the best resources.

    Also, when you mentioned how your clothes changed; I used to never leave the house without a full face of makeup. Felt like it was the only way I felt "normal and beautiful", and then I moved to Alaska and finally gave up on makeup. Best decision for my skin and I don't spend so much time on it. I will wear makeup for special occasions, but my "worth" is not wrapped up in my appearance any more. It's so freeing. Plus, I think it's one of those things some of us have to go through and grow up from.

    I always tell my husband, don't apologize for being a strong,hard working , godly man who has dirt on his clothes, boots and hands a the end of a good day. He is doing the work that God intended him to do, he does the work really well, he provides for his family and should consider the dirt his badge of honor! Same goes for you, Mike, be proud of your dirty boots!

    So someone else said it too: check the first tendril from the melon when it shrivels and the stem starts to turn brown you should have a very nice melon.
    Keep up the good work, it is all a learning experience. Better blessings on the next melons.

    Downed Corn: T-post at each end. Run string (do not weave it) from one T to the other, and then back again on the other side of the corn (2 Ts per row). As the corn grows add another string, and back again, higher up. If roots have pulled up, mound the dirt from between the rows, up around them.

    I learned that to tell if watermelon is ready to harvest the stem where the fruit is attached must turn brown and the tendrils near the stem must dry out. Great harvest. The chickens will love the rind and so will the goats. Nice surprise to see Doug from Doug and Stacy!!

    Of all the birds, vultures are my favorite. The reason is that they might be concidered ugly, but GOD created them to do a specific job and they do it well. They are the perfect life lesson: There might be a job that GOD has put in front of us that might not be the most glamorous but we still need to do that job and do it well. In the end we will find a blessing.

    Hi Lacey and Mike I love your videos ❤️. I watched you open the melons. To me they look like the Backer creek seeds you gotten a few months ago I believe 2 of them are Chinese watermelon. I do watch a few Chinese UA-camrs and they do harvest their melons young and when they get older. I love watching you guys as a family doing farming as a family and it's beautiful to see. l wake up every morning the first thing I do is grab my coffee and my cell phone to watch my favorite UA-camrs work around the homestead and and that's you guys .. I am living in Florida in a motel and I would love to do this when I get my home.. like the old saying home is where your heart is 😇 . The space between the soil and the edge of your container is called a watering lip. A mistake many people make is packing soil tightly to the very top of their growing container. Then they wonder why it is so difficult to keep the plants watered. The water runs off instead of pooling and soaking in. Nice done!

    When you need to deal with decaying animal flesh again put some “Vick’s” in and under your nose or one of the essential oils.
    If you have a heap of leaves, weeds, manure etc slowly changing to compost as long as the heap is really heated up inside you can put animals inside to decompose.
    !@Sheepishly Me used that technique to deal with any dead sheep or lambs they have. The heap needs to be hot and long term.
