I was the primary caregiver for my sister who recently passed away from pancreatic cancer. My air salon then had to close down due to the covid19 virus. Here I am a single girl, left to raise my sisters children. I have always wanted to do some gardening, and here is the opportunity to do it and to teach my nephews how to grow food too!

I so want to start an underground produce and meat system where those farmers can email or call in their excess crops and we could announce who had meat and produce for sale on social media and get it all sold ... this could avoid them having to dump it all and bring them some money in so they don't lose their farms...

It’s so refreshing to hear from a young family that believes in hard work and that it’s everyone’s responsibility to work hard and take care of ourselves at the end of the day. It’s so disheartening to hear so many believe that it’s the government’s responsibility. Unless you are unable to work due to age or disability....it’s everyone’s responsibility to provide for ourselves and our family and even our community. And that isn’t political. It holds true no matter who is in office or what their policies are. You guys are doing a great job taking care of yourselves and even providing food for others in your community. Sure it’s hard work...but it’s necessary and frankly it’s great for your own self esteem in the end. You get so much satisfaction from taking control of your own life.

I do believe that Spirit had me do this so that I could share with those who were putting in their first gardens. Good video.
Some things that were brought to my mind...
I recall when the CV19 started here in China, I had no fear that being in a city, the size of NYC, that the logistics would fail. Daily we walk to our markets and buy farm fresh food! Even the seafood/fish are less than 24 hours old. At regular low prices.
Our family farms survived, selling out product with no waste. A family nation that understands community needs.
Since 2004, we're starting our 5th year traveling within China.
Everywhere the locals have a garden, small to large, they supplement their family's wellbeing. There isn't any better than you attitudes and an open giving to others. While driving in the countryside, we've pulled off to eat at a roadside stand; only to be surprised by a market garden that supplies the cafe needs. Beautiful beds arranged in about 3 acres. Old to young they understand the growth cycles and proud of their skills.
Our uncle and aunt, farm my wife land in northern Guangxi, they're young and soon will be 100 yo.
It broke my heart, when the outbreak ramped up stateside, watching a report saying that 60% of students depended upon their schools to get atleast 2 meals per day! That blew me away, in America?
Hopefully, whenever I can fly back to NC... the primary school near our farm will start allowing students on field trips to visit. We're only 300 feet away but, they must cross the RR storage tracks ... usually empty/seldom used.
l grew up on that image of living on the wrong side of the tracks being a farmers son, 60+ years ago.
    Enjoy life and grow more!

It is precious to see an entire family working together to get things done. The skills and character qualities you are instilling in your children will bless them for a lifetime. My grandparents farmed during the Depression and I remember my grandmother telling me why they had it better as farmers (corn, soybeans, wheat, oats) during that tough time - they owned their land, they raised and canned their fruits, veggies and meat, had chickens/eggs and a milk cow - there was very little they had to purchase in town. They had delicious water from a good well. The work was hard but it kept their bodies strong and lean. They found comfort in knowing that whatever might happen, they would still have food on the table. In the years leading up to the Depression, my grandfather worked on their farm by day and took a town job at night. His friends wondered why he always had a few extra dollars - it was because he chose to "make hay while the sun shines." I am so thankful to them for sharing their Depression stories with me. Be well and God bless.

About 10 yrs. ago I took myself from PA to IL, and eventually came upon FARM country. I was humbled by the large farms with long straight rows of young plantings, and the home and misc structures in the middle of the acreage. It struck me how a farmer will invest all his energies and available funds into the ground, literally, to wait and hope the elements would produce healthy crops that would sustain the family for the whole rest of the year. BUT, there is the ever present fear/threat that something could, and has, gone very wrong and everything is lost for the whole rest of the year as well! Yes, we DO owe a great amount of gratitude and prayer for each of our farmers and their families for taking on this serious, necessary, risky endeavor each growing season. May God richly bless them all with healthy crops and protection from that which will destroy them. This includes you and Lacie, Mike, and those 3 imps you like to keep around! They give me much pleasure. : )

Four yards in the last three days all by myself!🥵 I’m thankful for the cooler weather today. Great video!💗

Hi guys I just wanted to take a second and share with you I'm soon to be 64 and retired because I can't medically keep up in my field anymore and with everything going on in our society I decided to make some raised beds thanks to you and the Rhodes family. I am using scrap wood that I'm gathering for many different places and including pallets , and I use my stimulus check to be able to buy the cow manure in the soil and the seeds and plants. I saw the writing on the wall a couple months ago but it's very hard for me physically to be out there doing this but I'm taking it one step at a time. I live alone and I have major bone and illnesses that sometimes I have to take 2 days break before I can get back to what I'm doing. When I was younger I taught my son how to raise a garden and I had a beautiful one back when I had the energy and was not sick. Now it may not be as large but I will be producing peppers tomatoes squash cucumbers potatoes onions and whatever else I can throw in my little beds. Thank you guys for helping me again to get motivated because I always did enjoy a garden and yes the farmers are having such a bad time and this is my small way to feed myself fresh things and get exercise at the same time and keep active. God bless I'd like to meet you guys one day.

Lettuce plug planting tip: I cut a straight 2" diameter branch into a comfortable staff. One end was carved into roughly the shape of my plugs, but more pointed. Stab all of your holes first. then go through and drop a plug into each hole (don't bother tamping it down). After they are all "plugged in" you can go through and water them in. the water will help to settle the plugs. It saves hours of bending and digging in the dirt. I love homemade tools! You can even carve the opposite ends for different plugs.

You are spot on ,on teaching your children a strong work ethic and giving them life skills that will follow them all their lives. Spending time with them and being patient shows up in your children's demeanor. All siblings have their differences but I see how your children know their place and function well together👍👍

Mono cropping is really starting to show itself as a non sustainable method of farming. The same goes for mono species farming/ranching. I feel so blessed to have a small ranch where we grow almost everything for our family’s use.
    Good job you all!

Mike, hey my friend. I understand fear of the wind, big wind, lost two homes, same property from massive ancient oaks falling directly onto the house destroyed them utterly..yup we were inside. For a long time my blood ran cold when the winds came ripping up the canyon. Then one nite a whisper told me to go and listen to the songs of the trees, to feel their rhythm hear their voices. The power of these tall green guardians of the earth is absolutely breath taking and heart racing, but something in me changed..my fear turned to awe, my ears now know how to listen to their voices in all seasons. I have respect but no fear any longer..mabe my friend this is your wisper..

We as a family bought a property in 2016. We started with small trees for fruit. Most are now about 3 feet tall Missouri dirt has not been easy to grow in. At this time our family of 3 are raising rabbits and chickens. Our garden does ok but never great. At this time we are down to my disability income. We are still working as best we can with what we have. You and your family are an inspiration.

Your garden, your family, and your home are beautiful. I think work, approached with the right attitude and perspective, makes a person feel so good about themselves and their circumstances. I look out over my garden and small acreage, and feel such a feeling of accomplishment when everything looks tidy and productive. When I take jars off the shelf or packages out of the freezer I feel so much more grateful than when I unload plastic bags and dump pre-processed stuff into the refrigerator!
Congratulations on passing these values on to the next generation. Oh, and BTW,...thank you for teaching your children manners and respect for themselves and others!

I don't think you are instilling fear, I think your helping people see the need to do something if they can to benefit themselves. It's true most have no idea the work that's involved in farming. Where would we be without farmers???? Thank you for your hard work, it's good to see your whole family working with you. May your family continue to be well.

I am disabled and a renter. I have a very bad back and other issues, ifn I can do it, anyone can. I am doing a huge garden and have been handing out gardens to others. Ran outta seed fer giving but I handed out and mailed quite a bit. Last year was my first year heirloom gardening and saving. Luckily, watching yougave me the idea to make up a diet up for myself...for every Pepsi and candy bar I did not buy I was allowed to order a pkg of heirloom seeds from my favorite seed company. Given the current situation, it was inspired. I am stocked for next year (just in case) and now since I ran outta give able seeds I saved I am handing out extra seedlings. I lost 60lbs...rofl. I wanted those seeds BAD. Now, I will lose more working in the garden and helping feed folks.

We got lucky and found someone who loves baker creek seeds and grew some seedling for us 💪🏽💚

🙋hi from Scotland ,hi Mike and Lacie thank you for sharing another amazing video you veg logs beautiful all the hard work shows ,yes i feel so sorry fir all the growers in the UK and its true its all the people from abroad who come to harvest all the produce but with social isolation and no one aloud to travel into the country then they would need our own people to do the job here in the uk we are told we must not travel and stay six feet apart so i think it would be hard to do that when picking all the fruit ,you see its all grown in poly tunnels so that might be why they wont do it also in this country the goverment pays out benefits if you are unemployed so thats and its true what you say if your getting money from the government so all the lazy ones wont go pick fruit and with over 30,000 deaths i wouldn't want to mingle with a lot of people ,i agree with everything you said in the vidio hope the wee chick survives your family is amazing both of you should be so proud of yourselves for building up your beutiful home stead stay safe take care Anne Scott from Scotland

I enjoy your family and your gentle spirit - Mike and Lacie. I appreciate you sharing with us. I have lived a homesteading lifestyle since my teen years. no, my family did not ever grow food. It was something I was called to. I am in my 60s now, with kids and grandkids and they all love growing and having real food - at one time we lived on a 10 acre homestead (my little slice of heaven) but even now in our urban dwellings we grow our food, even have chickens and other critters. we know where our food comes from and what real food looks like - if we can't produce it ourselves, we get it from local farms who are trusted sources. western cultures have gotten away from whole life living - and generations are going to suffer for it. hopefully some good will come from this current world situation, with a calling to return to what works - growing our own food is part of that. be well.

Hi 👋 Dickson Family, This is Nicole from Washington state. I enjoy watching your videos and think your family is awesome in how you all work together to keep your homestead going and I love the lifestyle you live. I’m working and trying to be able to live a lifestyle like yours. I live in a small town named Bridgeport and it’s right along the Columbia river and the chief Joseph damn. I think what you and Baker Creek are doing to help others in need is sooo awesome 👏!!! Well my town needs your help. We don’t have a food bank anymore it’s been a few years now that our local church has new owners and switched to a different religion so the food bank is gone. What I want or what I would like to do is to be able to grow vegetables and to provide our small town some good home grown veggies! I would love to be chosen for your giveaway and I would be so very very grateful for an opportunity to do something good for my hometown. Thank y’all for doing what you do and I am learning so much from you and before I know it I will be living your way of life and then I can have the knowledge to teach others how to.

I see it every day now others have actually raised their prices on their products that the stores are sort on, (eggs for $10 a dozen)My family and I work hard on our family farm much like you and your family, growing and raising our own food, we have been graced with an abundance of food and have decided to help those by giving our eggs and fresh cows and goat milk away to those in need. We believe in helping one another how ever we can especially now. Thank you and your whole family for the hard work you do.
