- "The City of the Dead" (1960), also known as "Horror Hotel," is a British horror film directed by John Llewellyn Moxey. The story revolves around a student, Nan Barlow, who travels to a remote New England town to study witchcraft. She unwittingly becomes part of a dark ritual in a cursed town haunted by a centuries-old witch. The film features atmospheric cinematography and eerie suspense. "The City of the Dead" fell into the public domain in the United States due to copyright expiry, allowing it to be widely distributed and viewed without restrictions.
You can watch the enhanced Black and White version here • Video should you not enjoy the colourisation.
Please before giving a thumbs down, most of these movies are in terrible condition, so don't expect miracles! I use a lot of electricity to enhance them as best as I can. I hope you enjoy what I do. Thank you for watching, you are appreciated greatly!
If you have any requests, please comment and I will do my best for you. As long as the requested movies are in the public domain, I can convert to colour and upload here for you to enjoy.
This movie took 17 hours to convert to colour in 4K resolution. I first removed as much grain as possible with de-noising. After that, I upscaled it to 4K and increased the frame rate to 60fps followed by AI colourising and AI facial enhancement. I hope you enjoy the end result!
This movie is in the public domain. There are also many other uploads of this movie across UA-cam channels and the archive in it's original black and white form.

We’ll never get good quality British classics like this anymore and Christopher Lee only made them that much more special. He was a great actor and left a lasting legacy for the entertainment industry.
Cleanest copy of this movie I have ever seen. Very much appreciate your effort to bring us these spooky classics!
Thank you for your kind words. It did take a long time to enhance, I used lots of AI for facial enhancement before converting to colour. Glad you enjoyed it, thank you for watching :)
You can see this color is fake. Are you color blind?
@@adrianovasconcelos2739 Of course the colour is fake, how can it be real when the original is black and white. Read the title and description before leaving a comment. You will find this link ua-cam.com/video/JjnuNqEkK_U/v-deo.html
nothing clean about it, it's like they filmed it through a kaleidoscope
@@SimonWard1Sir the disrespect of people is abhorrent to me. I value your work here for others enjoyment. May God bless you.😊🙋🏻♀️🇨🇦💋💯
Loved Christopher Lee, and Peter Cushion in the old Hammer House horror movies, British classic horror at its finest !
Peter's last name is spelled Cushing.

Love this movie. Especially, anything starring Christopher Lee ❤ Thanks, Simon
You are very welcome. I do have one more movie to upload that is sitting on the PC, I have been too busy filing counter claims on some 25+ copyright claims on public domain movies. I have won the last couple, but will wait until all are cleared before continuing the project.
@@SimonWard1 Do what you have to do, my friend. I'll be here to support you ! .. I appreciate all of these fine gems 💎 !! You have amassed quite the collection 😉 And I have them ALL saved in one private playlist 😁
@@SimonWard1 nice to see Christopher Lee before he had some extensive dental work for 🔨 house of horrors
Never seen this one in color before. I've loved it in B&W. Thanks for the opportunity to watch it in color.
My pleasure, thank you for watching :)
Amazing quality movie! I love 40's, 50's & 60's movies. They are so much better than the films made today. No cgi just great acting and wonderful scenery. Thank you so much for sharing this. Can't wait to see more!❤
Thank you so much for your kinds words and glad you enjoy the classic movies. :) Lots more to come :)
Film was always a favorite of mine watching it as a kid on tv. Now, so many years later it still packs a punch. The colorization is awesome.
Thank you for your positive feedback, greatly appreciated and glad you enjoyed it :)
This film and Hammer house of horrors is fantastic.Christopher Lee played a relatively small role but a major part.
No Simon, it's _you_ who is greatly appreciated!
Just came across your wonderful channel a few days ago and was thrilled to see so many coloured versions of great old movies we've only ever been able to see in B&W. I love many black and white movies, they have a lovely ethereal quality about them but it's also nice to see them in colour. I recently watched *Guest in the House* which is on my list of all time faves. A BIG thank you for all the effort you put in to make all these wonderful old beauties available to us.
Liked and subbed.
Thank you so much for your kind words and really glad you enjoy the movies I have enhanced. Also, thank you for subscribing, greatly appreciated :)
I really enjoyed this movie. I find these older movies so much more interesting than today's blockbusters.
Thank you for your time and effort in uploading.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you for watching :) Lot's more to come :)
This 4K version is spectacular. Thank you...
Thank you for watching and for your kind words :)
If you enjoyed this film, there is a very good chance you will really like "The Night of the Demon" which should be watched in its original full-length prerelease version.
I enjoyed this very much! The quality is exceptional
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it :)
Thx for colorizing this!
My pleasure! Thank you for watching :)
The quality of this film is fantastic! Would love to see all the black and white movies with Vincent price and Peter cushion, Christopher lee etc… thanks for the upload 😊⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you for a lovely positive comment, greatly appreciated and glad you enjoyed it. I did have all the enhanced black and white versions but had a dispute with UA-cam about "re-used content", I had to remove all the black and white movies I had enhanced as they didn't show enough work done from the original versions. Gutted really, took me 100s of hours!
Brings back memories of childhood creature features
Ah...The old, innocent horror movies. Full of plot holes, wobbly scenery and 'over the top' mist. I love 'em ! Thank you for the upload.
Glad you like them, thank you for watching, I'll do my best to find and enhance more :)
Simon, I recall seeing this movie in black and white sometime back. I am a fan of Christopher Lee, who was the best "Dracula", the screen ever had. Was this film restored and then colorized? What you have done with it and achieved is just AWESOME! Irrespective of what you may say, I am not giving up on you and my request for colorization. There's a Burke's Law episode "Who killed the rest"? here on UA-cam that features Lisa Gaye in a pivotal role. Perhaps, they may allow you to colorize the same, going by the excellent quality of your work now and in the past. Do please give it a try.
The film was downloaded in its original format from wikipedia, a webm, it wasn't in bad condition at all, which makes for a much better enhancement. It did take a longer time to enhance than previous as I am now using different settings that take up a lot more resources. I have had a look for Who killed the rest, but it's not a webm on Wikipedia and due to all the copyright claims, I will now only be using Wikipedia uploads to enhance because nobody can claim anything as theirs when its freely available under public domain mark 1.0 on Wikipedia. If you can search on Wiki for anything, if you find it, let me know and I will colorise it for you. I have to be very safe with what I do from now on, although I won every claim against me, I just don't have the time to counter all the false or mistaken claims. 250 hours of work was knocked offline over the weekend until yesterday, due to mistaken or false copyright claims against my content.
ALL that dry ice they must have used to make this movie.
@@SimonWard1 Simon, I really empathise with all the issues you have to contend with. Wikipedia just may have "It's a great life": The lady and the painting [circa 1955] from S-2, E-19 which guest star Lisa Gaye. Hope you have some luck here. Take care and God bless and I hope you now continue to have smooth sailing!
@@SimonWard1 I have just read your comment above and learned how much time and effort you put into these cinema gems. I didn't realise that! Thank you so much for these gifts. Without passionate aficionados like you, we would miss so much. Bless you.
Apparently the night lasts forever in Whitewood.
Thanks for the movie. Very entertaining.
Thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed it :)
Is it safe to come out from under my blankie? That was a scary film.
Thank you! I love this film and watching it in color feels like im watching it for the first time.. 😊
You're welcome 😊 Glad you like it and thank you for watching :)
Anything with the stately Sir Christopher is grand viewing! Thanks!
No problem at all, thank you for watching and if you have any requests, as long as the film is in the public domain, I will do my best for you :)
The dialogue is so delightful to hear. If only people could converse similarly today.
WOW, Thanks for uploading this movie up to 4K format. One of my fave horror movie of all time!
You're welcome, thank you for watching and glad you liked it :)

One of my absolute favourites wow seeing it in colour is incredible
Wow !! Never saw Horror Hotel in color before !! Although the colorization faded in & out a bit, it gave this classic flick a whole new dimension !! Thanks for posting!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Well done on the restorations and enhancements...👏👏👏👏👌👌👌👌👌🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖
Thank you for watching and your kind words. Unfortunately, although this is one of the best I've done and took a lot longer than any other, there have been multiple thumbs down.
@@SimonWard1... I agree... have you ever read Aesop's Fable of “THE MAN, THE BOY, AND THE DONKEY”... look it up and read it....
I always say that the problem with democracy is the Demos part... the majority of humans are ignoramuses... and the majority of the ones that are not imbeciles are vicious.
Love this movie watched it twice on TV greatest movie your showing here❤😊
Glad you enjoyed it :) Thank you for watching and leaving positive feedback, greatly appreciated :)
It's one of my favorite horror flicks I watch annually on Halloween🎃. What I love about The City of the Dead are the intensified ghoulish settings throughout the film, especially the graveyard, deck in fog, and centuries-old headstones. The set designers did a superb job planning and creating the entire scenery of Whitewood with mystical and ominous backdrops of a haunting hotel🏚. Even the thunderstorms⚡ and the hour of 13 chiming church bell🔔 gave visions of consternation at the end of the film. A splendid classic!!!! 🤟😝🤟
@@SimonWard1 Great job, Simon Ward, in converting this timeless black & white horror classic to color. My compliment🙏. LOVE IT!!!! 😝✊
Thank you so much :)
Love this movie , atmosphere is so spooky. TY
As soon as I saw this colored and clean version of the movie,Immediately subscribed to your channel.keep up the good work
Thank you for subscribing, I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
Simon,
I've watched this a number of times since the late 1960's and think it is great but what has also got me was the music; the jazz numbers when the guests are dancing. I don't know why the guy who wrote them didn't release a record with these numbers. At first you don't really pay attention to them ( naturally, considering the content of the movie ) but when you listen closer they have an appealing taste. I have an appreciation for all types of music and can't find the history of any of these numbers.
Always one of my favorite classic horror films! Thank you for uploading ❤
No problem at all, thank you for watching :)
Love this film. Merci!!
Nice job colourising and posting. Thank you.,
Many thanks! Glad you enjoyed it :)
You did a wonderful job in the time you put into the film. Hope you make many more.
I've just subbed! Had never seen this movie, but what an experience! So glad that I'm watching it in the month of April, well past Feb 1st and March 3rd!! Thank you for your hard work! I've seen enough older movies to recognize how much effort you have expended here. Bravo! 👏👏👏

This cleverly constructed film defines the genre.

No problem. I only enhance the movies, the actors, actresses, writers and producers deserve all the credit :) Thank you for watching :)
Probably the best colorized movie I've seen. Nice job! 😊

Thank you and thank you for watching :)
I had never watched this film before ♥ You have done a very good job!
Thank you so much for your positive comment and I'm glad you enjoyed it. :) Thank you for watching :)
Patricia Jessel is just perfect in this role. I think her talent must have gone largely unnoticed, or perhaps she didn’t fit the molds of the era.
Excellent clarity 👌. Well done😊. Great flick, too
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you for watching.
What an incredibly atmospheric film. I almost wonder if Moz watched this when he was a youngster.
It's great that you have put this up. Thanks. It's one of my top 20 fave films. However, dare I say, I think it is better in black and white - it makes it seem more eery.
I have just uploaded an enhanced black and white version here ua-cam.com/video/JjnuNqEkK_U/v-deo.html it's in 4K at 60fps.
Thanks for posting ❤
You are very welcome, thank you for watching :)
The colorization is excellent. Many thanks!!
Thank you for your kind words and thank you for watching, glad you enjoyed it :)
Thank you for colorizing one of my favorite all time movie I've been watching on and off in black and white for many years. Patty Duke was 14 years old in this movie?
She wasn’t in this movie! She would have been credited if that was the case. Also despite being set in New England, Massachusetts U.S.A. this film was made at Shepperton Studios in England.
Who would have thought that Christopher Lee was so slim in the 1960s. IT shows the difference in the diet of the 1960s and today with food and additives they use..
People did eat better,no ready meals and some of the rubbish we eat now,😍😍
The paranoid Torys still had mandatory enforced rationing in to the fifties. So actors could only buy a pound of sausages per week with their entire ration. Maybe that was why Christopher Lee started sucking blood from other actors necks to supplement his diet.
That was a real midnight matinee treat -- thank you!
You are very welcome, thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed it :)
Thankyou for sharing this film and the work you put into presenting it is much appreciated x
My pleasure! Thank you for watching :)
I subscribed! Looks like a Great Channel!

I really enjoyed this....thank you
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you for watching :)
People were so polite and made an effort then, isn’t it charming to hear the words ‘ I’ll put a record on so people can dance’. My parents era and so very much missed.
This is the best copy ever!
Thank you :)
I remember going to see this film when it came out in 1960 have been looking for it haven't seen it since I was fifteen now seventy nine still very scary
I have not watched this movie yet however I am a huge fan of these older types of movies.
Just wanted to mention that.
I had to smile when I read in the description an apology for the way this older and emphasising the word older movie is portrayed.
I think we forget how spoilt we are in these present times on the quality a movie is presented.
Taking into account that these older movies put far more effort into creating atmosphere without the modern day tools at hand.
And appreciating the work that goes into raising the quality of the film and how it is currently presented.
You have not watched the movie and yet you comment?
Any movie with Christopher Lee has to be good!
Looks pretty good i must say. Thanks for the post.
You are very welcome, thank you for watching :)
Thanks!
Thank you so much! This is greatly appreciated, thank you :)

Excellent color restoration your a genius 👏
Thank you so much for your kind words but the real geniuses are NVIDIA and the software company, I just teak a few settings and burn my electricity lol. Thank you for watching and giving me a smile first thing in the morning, greatly appreciated.
Nice flick! Great restoration.
Thank you for watching :)
Some really seriously great entertaining movies love these old movies they will be nothing ever like him again❤
Glad you enjoy them, thank you for watching :)
I generally don't like colorized movies. Though I've seen this in black and white, I didn't even notice it was colorized until I read the comments.
Seamlessly done. Bravo!
I was 10 yrs old in 1960 and you captured the "respectable" girl color palette perfectly.
And, oh my, weren't women starting to get uppity!?
We just kept getting more and more disrespectful as that turbulent decade progressed.
Some of us never got over it. I routinely shock, and am shocked by, how conservative my 40 something neighbors are. 😅
Some fun! Thanks.😃
~ I tend to agree on not being keen on colourised versions of old black n whites. That was until I discovered Simon's channel.
I can't begin to comprehend how it's all done but I do realise a lot of work goes into making the colourised versions, especially on this channel. I don't bother much with coloured version on other channels as they aren't up to much, they seem to have brownish overtones. I don't know what Simon does differently but it works!
Thanks for posting this excellent colour copy. I have seen this but in the B/W version. This was a early use of colour as it looked very grey/washed out.
Thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed the quality. The original black and white version I used is also in the description, it's maybe a better black and white version?
What a cult classic, this movie scared me as a youngster back in the early 70's! They don't make movies the way the used to.
You're 100% correct. I tend to laugh at the horror movies they make today, old ones always the best!
Where in the name of thee O'Lucifer did this incredible rendering of this classic horror movie come from?! It seriously looks like each frame was put through supercomputer analysis and enhanced for maximum possible color integrity and resolution! My sincere compliments.
I love this comment :) Thank you so much :)
excellent colorization job 👍
Thank you for your kind words, greatly appreciated :)
Anything with Christopher Lee and it is great
Excellent, this is great.
Thank you for watching :)
What a great horror film.
No worries..brilliant work..well done !
Thank you so much 😀
This is such an excellent movie, seen it twice!
Brilliant, thank you for the positive feedback and glad you enjoyed it :)
Wow it looks great in colour... I wish someone would do this to the classic Marilyn Monroe B&W movies, especially Some like it hot.... it’s amazing how different they look
Thank you so much :) I wish I could colourise classic Monroe movies but it's really difficult to find any in the public domain. I will see what I can do though. I am away until next Tuesday but will take a look then and see if there are any available :)
Muchas gracias por compartirlo, se ve muy bien!
¡Ningún problema! Gracias por ver las películas. :)
Wow I just watched that whole movie...did a comment just say that movie was in color. Then I missed it. Holy crap it was colorized. No wonder it was missing that noir feeling
Maybe the title?
I first saw this movie on WPBS on Haloween. Loved it instantely. I like these older horror movies. Christopher Lee is obvioulsy great in this movie.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm certain some of the women burnt probably weren't witches.
Only seen this movie in b/w. No idea there was a color copy. Some of the colorization is off but it doesn't distract from the movie.
When I first saw this as a kid on the late movie show, it scared the crap out of me.
Your work is amazing! I hope to participate in your gofundme when I can, but in the meantime I can only thank you for the effort and great cultural labour you are doing, best regards!
Thank you so much for your kind words. The real work is the script, actors and actresses, I just do my best to bring classic movies to the present time. You are supporting the project greatly by leaving positive comments and watching the movies, that is an amazing help for me, thank you so much :)
Love this movie watch it often
Cool. Thank you
Thank you for watching :)
6:55 If Christopher *freaking* Lee would have glared at me like that, I would have ran away and never stopped running until I were at least three counties away...
