HELLGATE! Full Western Movie! Sterling Hayden, James Arness, Ward Bond, Joan Leslie! History! WOW!

HELLGATE is a neglected western and a retelling of Dr. Samuel Mudd, imprisoned for treating John Wilkes Booth, assassin of President Lincoln. It was written and directed by Charles Marquis Warren and is loaded with an extraordinary cast. Sterling Hayden stars as the wrongly convicted doctor, imprisoned for treating an injured stranger. Ward Bond as the surly, sadistic Warden, James Arness as a fellow prisoner, with Joan Leslie, Robert J. Wilke, John Pickard, Sheb Wooley, Kermit Maynard, Timothy Carey, Ed Hinton, James Anderson, Rodd Redwing, Mikey Simpson, John Cason, Ed Cobb and many other western film veterans.
In 1952 writer producer Warren put together a terrific production with HELLGATE. I think you’ll enjoy seeing this diverse cast sweating and toiling away in the minimalist prison set. Most of the film was shot in what is almost the middle of Hollywood...the famous Bronson Canyon with it's caves, surrounded by steep inclines of sand and rock, making it the perfect location for this film. Writer/Director Charles Marquis Warren had a real hankering and love of westerns as he would later produce the first 84 episodes of RAWHIDE, plus the TV series GUNSLINGER with Tony Young, THE VIRGINIAN, IRON HORSE and Elvis Presley’s last western, CHARRO!
In 1956, again with Sterling Hayden, character actor Timothy Carey would have a very memorable role in Stanley Kubrick’s classic, THE KILLING.

Sterling Hayden was such a understated actor. He emitted power without really pushing real hard. Joan Leslie. A lovely leading actress. Ward Bond & Sheb Wooley are personal favorites too. Jim Arness single handedly kept the Western Alive on TV when MADISON AVENUE tried so hard and successfully to kill them. Thanks, Rob.
