Learn about the life of artist Paul Klee in this Paul Klee biography. Paul Klee was born on the 18th of December 1879 in Muchenbuchsee, near Bern in Switzerland. Encouraged by his parents, he started violin classes at age seven and proved himself to be a very talented musician.
He moved to Munich in 1898 to study art at the Academy of Fine Arts with Heinrich Knirr and Franz von Stuck. His first important works, a series of etchings, called ‘Inventions’ were undertaken between 1903-1905 after a visit to Italy. In June 1905 he visited Paris where he saw Impressionist paintings and the work of van Gogh, Cezanne and the Belgian artist, James Ensor. On 15th of September 1906, he married Lily Stumpf.
Naturalistic painting didn’t interest him. His aim was for creativity and imagination to determine the outcome of the picture, inspired by the first layers of paint or marks applied to the canvas.
Around 1911 he met August Macke and Wassily Kandinsky. His friendship with Franz Marc proved crucial because it was Marc that showed Klee how far abstraction and a visionary approach to content could be taken. In 1914 he visited Tunisia with Louis Moilliet and August Macke and it was in Hammamet that Klee claimed in his diary that his breakthrough to painting in colour had occurred. ‘Colour and I are one.’
Hans Goltz organised a large retrospective exhibition of 362 Paul Klee paintings in his Munich gallery in May 1920. This was Klee’s breakthrough, but despite a guaranteed annual income, he felt it too risky to rely on just selling paintings. So, he accepted an offer to teach at the Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany. In 1925 Paul Klee’s pedagogical sketchbook, based on his visual form lectures, was published as a student Bauhaus manual. By the mid-1920s Klee’s reputation had spread far beyond Germany.
In 1926 Paul Klee took part in the Surrealist’s first exhibition in Paris and in 1928 he visited Egypt. In March 1930 the Museum of Modern Art in New York, USA presented an exhibition of his work, the institution’s first solo show by a living European artist. In 1933, when Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany, Klee was denounced as a "Galician Jew" and a "cultural Bolshevik," and his work derided as "subversive" and "insane."
In 1936 Paul Klee was diagnosed with progressive scleroderma, a rare autoimmune disease and for over almost a year was almost incapable of working. In April of 1937 17 paintings by Paul Klee were shown at the infamous exhibition of Degenerate Art in Munich. The Nazi’s also confiscated over 100 of his works from public collections in Germany.
Paul Klee’s late paintings and drawings are strongly influenced by the harsh distortions of Pablo Picasso’s work of the 1920s and ’30s.
Paul Klee died in hospital in Locarno, Switzerland 29th of June 1940. In 2005 Zentrum Paul Klee Museum opened as an independent institution and research centre containing around 40% of Paul Klee’s entire output.

Klee was sooooo original that I think he helped redefine art. An interesting artist I knew named Terry O'shea said, 'Art is the process of redefining itself'. Art has a kind of life of its own.
When I was young I used to get ideas for a painting. I would completely do a painting from a mental image. Later I did landscapes trying to capture the scene in front of me. More recently I've taken to decorating a surface with color. That last direction my took of decorating a surface was the most fun and the results were very pleasing. Too bad for me my paintings don't sell often and when they do it's for $50 give or take $10. But I paint only for myself. I did my first painting in water color about 64 years ago, and my first oil painting nearly 60 years ago. The winner is the one who never stops.

At a museum display of Klee's work, I had the closest thing to Stendhal syndrome I'll probably ever experience. What's wild was how tiny the canvases were: it didn't matter. They might as well have been the gigantic El Greco I saw in Chicago that made me tremble. 😂✨💖
My Mom said I reacted to art from infancy. Sometimes I have to cover my eyes because the beauty of their paintings is that overwhelming. Thank you very much for a look at PK's life & genius.

Klee is a painter whose art makes you gasp with astonished pleasure every time a new painting appears. Color, playfulness, above all the gift of translating imagination directly into its visual equivalent. I enjoyed this video.

@@ArtHistorySchooland so little known among people who would just enjoy his work so much!! He was one of my artist father's favorites, so I was blessed to learn about him very young. I actually got to see Picture Album up close in Phoenix at a special exhibition about the roots of abstract expressionism some years ago. I couldn't stop looking at it, my eyes just traveling over it and over it. ❤ Edit: it wasn't Picture Album. Off to search out the name of the correct painting!

When I was at high school, circa 1971 I spotted a cheap print of Paul Klees' 'Senicio',hanging in a corridor above a radiator. It beauty captivated me.
I asked a senior member of staff if I could take this warped, worthless print home. My request was refused,so I stole it and craftily took it home with me.
That was where my love affair with Klees style began, and to this day,he is still my favourite artist .

It is interesting when I watch videos like this it takes me back to when I discovered the artist when in school. I realize now that one book I read by Paul Klee heavily influenced my own work and even the course I took in my life.
I don’t remember the whole quote but he said something about leaving art school and learning painting by digging potatoes. I have therefore viewed every life experience as artistic inspiration. I decided to do landscapes recently, after watching lots of Bob Ross, and I now realize my landscapes are more subconsciously inspired by Paul Klee.

Nice video--I don't know how you found so many examples of Klee's early/student work! I've looked all over and only found a few.

Excellent video, thank you so much for your work. A suggestion if you are open to them…at times your presence on screen is a slight distraction from the paintings and it would be helpful to see the pieces on their own to really have a chance to take them in. Thank you for sharing your extensive knowledge, this channel is a wonderful educator.
