Learn about the life of Polish artist Tamara de Lempicka in this Tamara de Lempicka biography. The artist Tamara de Lempicka led an extraordinary life. Imagine Paris in the 1920’s, the Roaring Twenties. It is the height of the jazz age, Paris is the centre of modernism in art and design and after the horrors of the 1st World War, society is changing fast. It is more egalitarian and the French along with everyone else, is ready to party. Enter a young Polish refugee from Russia, a modern woman, a larger-than-life character, a libertine and social climber destined to make her mark. Her paintings, Cubist inspired, combined the traditions of Ingres and Caravaggio with lavish decoration and the style and sophistication of her sitters. This artist, who named herself Tamara de Lempicka, epitomised the glamourous era of Art Deco during the 1920’s and 1930’s.
Born in Warsaw in 1898 as Tamara Rozalia Gurwik-Gorska , Tamara de Lempicka painted her most famous work, Autoportrait - Girl in the Green Bugatti in 1927. She died in Mexico in 1980.

I enjoyed the video--thank you! I discovered de Lempicka years ago and she became my favorite artist--bar none! She is terribly underrated and not known well enough. When other "artists" sell for millions for smears and spatters, Ms de Lempicka is an example of what art ought to be. Beauty! Beauty! Beauty!

She deserves to be better known, but some of her paintings have also sold for millions.

Well, I'm not laughing, and I avoided mentioning when I saw the misspelling because I didn't want to be overbearing. But epidemy is but really a weird used in English, although if it were, it works mean related to an epidemic disease. The context of your (@carole lerman's) comment clearly indicates an intent to say epitome.
People make mistakes in spelling or usage all the time. When I was growing up I had only read the word epitome and had never heard it used, so I had an incorrect impression of how it would be pronounced. Mistakes like these are caused when you've only heard a word but never seen it written, or in my case, I had seen it written but never heard it pronounced. Neither is a good reason to laugh at someone.

De Lempicka's artistic style was intriguing. And what a personality! A hell of a gal. To adapt her style to what was selling when times were lean would have been against her identity. I'm glad she lived long enough to see her works rediscovered. Her nudes and portraits would fit brilliantly alongside the classics of like subjects in any investment or personal collection. Thanks for another excellent art history peek behind the scenes, Paul. 💖

Great video. Always look forward to these. It’s look like these humanist artists seem to die with so many regrets. Her story isn’t too far from Salvador Dali’s or Picasso. Once the glory days are gone, their success feels like it was all for nothing. What a sad way to go. At least her works transcend the time she lived on this earth. Bravo!

It didn't say she regretted her life at all lol it said she regretted "getting old" and her "declining beauty." That's...different and pretty damn universal. Among women even in their 20's but she was like 80+ with worse eyesight and abilities. I mean the power of her beauty saved at least two people from the grips of nazi germany. Have you lost that to the ravages of time? Give her a break.
