He was a phenomenal programmer, but to say he is the best ever is inaccurate on all accounts Linus Torvalds blows this guy outta the water cause Mr. Torvalds actually understood crowd sourcing and general practical thinking.
I actually agree that he may have been the smartest programmer that ever lived. Torvalds really did change the world and the post before mine makes a great argument. However, Terry wrote his own version of C with just in time compiling, then he wrote his own colonel with his own version of C, And then he wrote his own operating system on top of that kernel all by himself. There are things in his operating system that I don't think I've ever seen before either like the live graphics rendering directly in source code. As much as the problems Terry had with his mind are also what made him very special, I absolutely cannot imagine what a mind like his could do with tools today without the paranoid schizophrenia.
