Good to hear Bob Welch again, especially performing "Ebony Eyes". I had this album when I was a young teen and had sort of forgotten how good it was over the decades.
Was lucky enough to see Heart at The Cow Palace in the bay area around 79. Holy sh8 I'd forgotten how beautifully Ann Wilson's voice cut through. Top musicians - all.
As raw as this is, compared to all the "Hi Fi effects" that are used in today's performances- it is still better than what we are given today. The people were nicer too!!
There are around three shows from the early to mid 70's I would do just about anything to revisit, greatest of them being Nov. 22 (Thanksgiving) 1973. The Who at the Forum in Inglewood. Never before, never since. If you were there, you know.
@captainflamson Count me in!! The Rolling Sones at Hampton Coliseum Friday December 18, 1981 was unreal with George Thorougood opening, but this California Jam II would be on the time travel list!!

I was the one who whistled up to Art Scholl, the stunt pilot, on the wing of his plane ... !!! A Great Jam ... Call Jam II ... !!!

I was 14 years old and they used to air excepts from this footage late at night that year. Thankfully I have a lot of memories of this time and this music. Aerosmith and Ted Nugent we're big for me then as I had just "graduated" from Kiss. How amazing does Heart hold up today!! Wow.
Watched those late night (on the.east coast) airrings of these, saw Clarlos one night doing black magic women, wow, sadly I was visiting my grandparents and couldn't crank it up lol
Incredible concert. I was there with my brother and two friends. Got real wasted and rocked out into the night. Slept in the parking lot and almost got run over by other cars. It was a blast. the 1970s were a great time to come of age

This was my very first concert at 13. What a day of music with all of the iconic bands of that era. Heart, Ted, Aerosmith and Foreigner were the bands I really wanted to see and they all rocked it up. This brings back so many memories. Thank you for posting this.
AWESOME! Thank you for this! Heart! Damn! Sounding so good! I wish more of the Aerosmith footage was available, they were so much more functional on this than Texxas Jam 78! Love this entire footage. Thank you for having this available!!!🤘🍻

Heart's Music Man stacks are freaking hilarious. Those amps were built so well that nobody ever bought more Music Man's and because they were not selling new amps a guy bought the company and actually stopped production. It sounded like a crazy idea but that's what he said in an interview. So because of the quality of the amps, the company went out of business. Crazy.
Wish I was there! Thanx for posting this historical footage! All bands in their prime. The flute solo from Ian McDonald (Foreigner) blew me away! Santana played fast and furious, with Dave Mason soloing as a guest in Soul Sacrifice. Ted Nugent with his original band, really hard rocking. And Aerosmith too. Heart was great!
when dave mason started playing it all hit me so hard i mean serious tears like a river for that which is gone -if ever a moment is timeless it is this moment
Heehee...this was my very first concert. I was just 15yrs9mos. Mom dropped me and my older brother off the night before. My brother went to get us drinks at about noon during the concert (before Santana) and I never saw him the rest of the day. I stayed to the end and then went to the tunnel going under the track and stuck my thumb out asking"anyone going to San Berdnardino?" Within about three minutes someone said come with us, and it turned out they lived just a few blocks from me.
I was there, I wish I could go back. The world was such a better place then. You cant bring that many people togather now days, they would try to kill each other.

The "musicians" would be trying to kill each other too! With their dis's, feuds, trying to out due each other with how "bad" they are. So different today, popular music is a joke today.

My first concert too! I was a 14 yo girl who got separated from my oldest sister and saw many things that I was too young to see but I had a blast! No regrets!!
I couldn't believe that they waited until almost midnight, and after Aerosmith for Mahogany Rush to take the stage. My friend and I had made the road trip from PHX to see the show. We had to be at work early the next day, so we were unable to stay for Mahogany Rush's set. (the MAIN reason we came to the show 😮😫) Although we did thoroughly enjoy Santana's set, as well as Dave Mason and Foreigner and of course Uncle Ted was outrageous as usual.
I was there. I came from Phoenix with three friends. Two women and another guy. As we drove over there one of the women, Jeannie, dropped some acid without telling us. She got pretty wacked out. When we got out of the car, she ran off into the crowd. We did not see her for the rest of the concert. When we got there it was about 3 am. I-10 was a parking lot. The entire freeway was turned into tailgate parties with everyone out of their cars and passing joints and such. The CA Highway Patrol contacted the organizers and ordered them to get down there and open the gates and stand back. They didn't even take tickets. They just wanted to clear the interstate. They sold something like 267,000 tickets, but the sheriff's estimate from the air was 500,000. The movie says 250,000, but I think that was before they had the sheriff's estimate. I saw people walking around yelling "Ludes for sale!" Or "Acid for sale!" you could find about anything you wanted. I just smoked weed. When it was over we still had not found Jeannie. No cells back then. So I drove to the main entrance. I drove the car onto the concrete apron in the entrance way and parked it so people would have to go around it to exit. I was hoping Jeannie would see us. Then we went to sleep while waiting. No luck. It was a shot in the dark anyway. So we went back to Phoenix, hoping Jeannie was ok. Once back I got a call from Jeannie. She was in a truck stop in Indio, CA. A trucker got her that far. So we knew she was OK, but stranded. So I got in my car and drove about 250 miles to get her. It was a great time. It's hard to believe it was 41 years ago now.

Unreal to be honest. All timer right there
Santana with Everclear,
Song: Put Your Lights On.
Santana with Rob Thomas, Song: Smooth.
Frank Marino ,overlooked , underrated great guitarist. I am sure that he had no say in what was put out on this video. Critics, please bother yourselves to actually listen to some of his music and playing.. I am a fan for 45 years.
Marino IS fantastic. His album "Juggernaut" is an excellent place to start.
yeah he's great...unique talent!!
Agree 100%
Marino was a beast back then.
I saw him in D.C. July 4th weekend during the NORML smoke out. 1979 or 80.
WHEN IT STARTS with bob and stevie i am transported in time and i get to live that moment of legendary talent ---they all look so happy for 10 am in the morning..anyways sigh when i see the people in that crowd it reminds me of high school ..this film captures moments that never repeated themselves i think its a real marvel to see this the nostalgia pulls my heartstrings
Stevie Nicks, Ann and Nancy Wilson ❤
And Christine McVie!
A different world back then. How I miss it, yet grateful to have experienced those cool groovy times times.
ICONS These ladies represent all that was good about Music . God be with these ladies Rock & Roll .
this is the music that my mom grew up listening to in the 70's, i 1,000% agree this music is better than today's rock music
I agree for most lol but there still alot good modern music just its not popular like it was then . All the best band nowadays are playing clubs not shows like this
There is no "today's rock music". Rock is dead.
"Magic Man" is a piece that was waaaaayyyyy ahead of its time!
Why is this quality of music not being written today in 2021 and now 2022!?!? I don't get it!
@@michaelbutler275 I dont know either but what ive noticed is that bands nowadays cant write anything original. They all sound generic.
The 70s was the coolest...I say let's do it again
COOL PLAN!!! I'M WITH YA
I’m in, let me grab my jean jacket.
@@deborahchesser7375 cool....I'll grab my bag and 8 tracks
I have my letter jacket. And class ring 70’. And pipe.
I'm in. 👍
Good to hear Bob Welch again, especially performing "Ebony Eyes". I had this album when I was a young teen and had sort of forgotten how good it was over the decades.
HEART IS SO AMAZING!
Nancy had to break out from that, "I'm a girl so I play acoustic guitar" archetype.
Ann and Nancy are adorable!
Wow, Bob Welch was a great opening. What a fantastic performance.
Many thanks!
Was lucky enough to see Heart at The Cow Palace in the bay area around 79. Holy sh8 I'd forgotten how beautifully Ann Wilson's voice cut through. Top musicians - all.
I so miss the late 60's & 70's !! the best music....
Yeah it was a good time
SANTANA is a drum orgy
And the chicks were goood looking...
As raw as this is, compared to all the "Hi Fi effects" that are used in today's performances- it is still better than what we are given today. The people were nicer too!!
Ann Wilson just kept getting better.
And when are kimonos coming back?
Exactly what I've been wishing I could do, travel back in time to the '70s of my youth and go to an awesome rock show. Thank you, I needed this!
Right on brother,.not sarcasm
There are around three shows from the early to mid 70's I would do just about anything to revisit, greatest of them being Nov. 22 (Thanksgiving) 1973. The Who at the Forum in Inglewood. Never before, never since. If you were there, you know.
@captainflamson
Count me in!!
The Rolling Sones at Hampton Coliseum Friday December 18, 1981 was unreal with George Thorougood opening, but this California Jam II would be on the time travel list!!
Cal Jam II ... March 16 - 18, 1978 ... I was there ... I was backstage when Heart showed up and Craig and I got to party with the members of the Band before their set ... I was the one who whistled up to Art Scholl, the stunt pilot, on the wing of his plane ... !!!
A Great Jam ... Call Jam II ... !!!
Good lord, Ann Wilson in her prime will ALWAYS be my ultimate rock & roll fantasy.
God, she had it all. Still does imho!! Prettier than even gorgeous Linda Rhonstat.
Stevie Nicks in her prime does it for me. Was fortunate enough to see a few months after this in '78. Great times 😊
My 1st concert at 15yo, I must say what a way to start my life!
A hicky from Kaninki is like a Hallmark Card.
Wow awesome!
Mine too
That's awesome!! I'm so jealous!
All downhill from there. Ha
I was there it was awesome 👌 what a blast, all Bands great that was great music 🎶
HEART, holy crap what an awesome rock band!
WHEN YOU HEAR THIS YOU REALIZE THAT TODAY'S MUSIC BLOWS
You need to start looking harder
Actually, when I hear today's music, I realize that today's music blows. It really REALLY does.
@@susanp.203 Where are you looking? I haven’t listened to the radio in 10 years
Look harder, don't be lazy.
Flavor of the year rappers, being shoved down kids throats for the last twenty years is cruel. Poor kids today.
Dear Lord, how magnificent were Heart?
I was 14 years old and they used to air excepts from this footage late at night that year. Thankfully I have a lot of memories of this time and this music. Aerosmith and Ted Nugent we're big for me then as I had just "graduated" from Kiss. How amazing does Heart hold up today!! Wow.
I hated all 3 of those bands and I was 11 at the time. Still hate them, except perhaps Aerosmith. I was into disco, full force. Still am 🙂
Watched those late night (on the.east coast) airrings of these, saw Clarlos one night doing black magic women, wow, sadly I was visiting my grandparents and couldn't crank it up lol
I was there ...got a ride there from San Diego , lost them there and ended up hitchhiking back...great show ! I will never forget it
Yawn
Incredible concert. I was there with my brother and two friends. Got real wasted and rocked out into the night. Slept in the parking lot and almost got run over by other cars. It was a blast. the 1970s were a great time to come of age
I remember watching this on TV !!! And this is the first time I've seen it since ! Thank you for posting ! I've gotta message my brother and tell him to look this up ! This brings back so many good memories ! I was 12 years old .
Ann Wilson looking good!
She looks even better now. If you like a certain look.
What about Nancy?
@@Frip36 I like a woman with a little meat on her bones. But I'd do Stevie Nicks any day and anytime. And Ann, too.
@@anfrankogezamartincic1161 Nancy’s a Plain Jane. She just doesn’t have the presence. She could have coasted on her looks if she had the presence..
@@austinteutsch And of course Stevie blows them away with sex appeal
This was my very first concert at 13. What a day of music with all of the iconic bands of that era. Heart, Ted, Aerosmith and Foreigner were the bands I really wanted to see and they all rocked it up. This brings back so many memories. Thank you for posting this.
When Bob Welch took off his guitar and started to dance all I could think was “Napoleon Dynamite”.
Lol 😂😅😅 Or Jerry Lewis !
Watched this on TV when I was 9 yrs old.......loved Heart, Nugent, and Aerosmith at the time (still do) !
Ann Wilson had an incredible range
And what a cutie too!
Still does.
They're awesome in concert, seen them in Cincinnati some time ago, loved it
Had? Still does.
she still has
Undoubtedly one of the best Heart performances
I doubt it. Seen them multiple times-- Yale Bowl, "Summer Jam '80" performance = phenominal❣💖🤘
@@artistaloca4 omg lucky uuu
original foreigner at the top of their game !
Bob Welch really gets this show off in the right direction. Great sound and great band.
Bob was one of the great ones!
AWESOME! Thank you for this! Heart! Damn! Sounding so good! I wish more of the Aerosmith footage was available, they were so much more functional on this than Texxas Jam 78! Love this entire footage. Thank you for having this available!!!🤘🍻
The 70' is by far the best decade.
Nah it’s the 80s bro it least when it comes to music. If we talking movies then yeah I’ll give you the 70s.
No 60s 70s and 80s all great eras of music so many great bands they all pave the way for the future musicians all of them deserve recognition musicians in the back and definitely to the front love seeing all these bands play live I just turned 60 January 17th 2022 Still rocking those drums and played with a lot of incredible musicians met a lot of great incredible musicians also what a great musical life I've had
Crazy.
Damn. I want one now
Loud as well I had the 4×10 jbl version and could never turn it up to 10, monster loud.
Those amps are highly sought after and worth thousands.
Wow! The recording of Heart is really excellent!!
when dave mason started playing it all hit me so hard i mean serious tears like a river for that which is gone -if ever a moment is timeless it is this moment
Mason was awesome.
👍
Saw him in 1974 at UC Irvine in their auditorium. I was fourteen years old. Drunk AF. Had the time of my life. All along the watchtower.
I'd say he had the best sounding and tightest band
Heehee...this was my very first concert. I was just 15yrs9mos. Mom dropped me and my older brother off the night before. My brother went to get us drinks at about noon during the concert (before Santana) and I never saw him the rest of the day. I stayed to the end and then went to the tunnel going under the track and stuck my thumb out asking"anyone going to San Berdnardino?" Within about three minutes someone said come with us, and it turned out they lived just a few blocks from me.
I remember watching this on ABC on a Saturday night. Memories. Thanks for sharing.
I saw heart that aug 77 in the cape cod coliseum. this is the best video i've found. now I know my memories are correct. they were amazing!
Little known fact: Comedian Freddy Lewis was in attendance for Cal Jam II. Somehow he ended up in Waxahachie, Texas! xoxo The Clarences
I was there, I wish I could go back. The world was such a better place then. You cant bring that many people togather now days, they would try to kill each other.
I remember seeing this concert on TV on the east coast I was in High school at the time .I had a.good time just watching it .being there must been something special. ROCK ON.
The "musicians" would be trying to kill each other too! With their dis's, feuds, trying to out due each other with how "bad" they are. So different today, popular music is a joke today.
Yes those were the good old days when people expressed love and meaning through their music unlike the BS of today that expresses useless negative messages with very little to no talent at all. Stevie sure was a Cutie pie!
Me too..was awesome!!..best time..drugs everywhere..weed smell was strong.. loved it..great time
i was not there... i was 11 years old watching clips on late night tv wishing I was there LOL
My dad went to Cal Jam 2 after telling him I wanted to go to Cal Jam 2018 and he proceeded to show me this video while hearing his stories. I can’t tell ya’ll how happy I felt
My old man was there too, still talks about it lol
Always thought Derek St Holmes had one of the greatest rock voices in the business. Him and Ted were a great pairing in those days
No doubt Derek Saint Holmes rock hard with the Nuge . But I like them just as well and maybe even better when you got with MSG !
I agree. This was Ted's best line up.
@@scottduyser1222 lets face it. Ted is a GREAT guitar player. Singer not so much. DSH as the vocalist was the top of Teds sucess!!!
Derek wanted more control of the music, and alpha male Ted said no way.
How in the He'll is uncle Ted not in the Rock Hall..
The good old days of rock n roll so many great bands in the 70s best decade of music in history
I totally agree I went to more concerts in the 70’s them any other decade
None of the bands on this bill were ANY good. B-list pretenders.
It's too bad this concert is lesser known than Woodstock. It's way better. Woodstock probably would have been fun to see Hendrix and other bands I like. But was just too full of dirty hippies.
@@Supertzar999 Woodstock was NOT about the bands(but to say this was better is a joke in itself), it was about the EXPERIENCE, and the times. How do people still not get it?
@@JD-nq4vb I think you mean all the acid tripping, right? Probably wouldn't be about the bands.
Ann and Nancy are so fuckin fine in addition to being great artists. 🥰
Used to own Cal Jam II on vinyl. First time checking the visual with the audio. I have always felt Heart sounded the best this day. With Frank Marino Mahogany Rush the Santana.
I picked up the Cal Jam 2 CD off Amazon recently. Not sure why, but Foreigner was left off the CD. 😢
The late ,great Bob Welch !
I was here and at the time I was 19 and trippin' on clearlight or was it windowpane as I can't remember lol. It was a fun day out rocking with a permanent smile etched across my face :) Thanks for sharing the memories ScragglyPuff

That’s Dreamboat Annie
Roger Fisher shoulda just left those chicks alone 😂. Like I would have
She still is.

I was a freshman in High School when this aired on TV. Wow, not seen the concert since. The following day at school it was big news. I remember Dave Mason coming out to jam with Santana. These days are long gone. The music today sucks.

Tom Araya, Jeff Hanneman, Kerry King, Dave Lombardo.

Man, I remember this concert to this day! Drove my 65 Chevy Impala down from Canoga Park late the night before, got a flat, had to sleep in my car, got it fixed finally about 5:30am, got to the Speedway around 6:00. Most everyone was still asleep on the grass or just waking up. I was able to weave through the crowd and make my way all the way to the front row!
The concert really started to rock when Nugent to the stage. It was a blast! Those were some of the best Rock years ever!
Thanks for the post!

Been there and done that first and greatest concert in my life 🎉🎉 I talked my way in without a ticket or money but got a close to about 100 yards out at the beginning and then got shuffled way back for Ted Nugent and Aerosmith and slept in the parking lot without getting killed and then hitched back to Encino before my dad found out that I lied about ditching school in Tarzana back in 78
My first concert too! I was a 14 yo girl who got separated from my oldest sister and saw many things that I was too young to see but I had a blast! No regrets!!
Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush are epic. I love how he played a bit from the Mickey Mouse Club theme
Damn! Heart was a tight live band!
I would rather hear Heart cover Zeppelin songs Live than Zep.
Heart was so on point here!!
Thank you @scragglypuff. This was awesome to stumble upon tonight, an instant favorite.
Great story man!
i was there. a lot of AD going around. it was a zoo.

Oh my. So many memories of this event. My favorite: Waking up to "Purple Haze" and wondering if it was the 2nd Coming of Jimi Hendrix. (Yes, I was a bit ... tripped out). Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush rocked it!
Most of the people left before Mahogany Rush came on at night. There was plenty of room near the stage. Epic. I'd been a quarter mile back until then.
FRank Marino deserves more than one just one play, he derseves better.
