    Clarification re: Nutritionist vs Dietitian. In the video I described the differences between a dietitian and a nutritionist, with one distinction being that nutritionists are unregulated and that “anyone can be a nutritionist”. However, this statement applies predominately to CANADIAN LAW, and may not be applicable elsewhere. Most provinces in Canada (where I live and where I answer to a regulatory body) do not have provincially regulated nutritionists, besides Alberta. In Alberta, nutritionist is ALSO regulated so no one, except for a dietitian, can call themselves this. In the US, it's my understanding that the term "registered dietitian nutritionist" is now a regulated term for dietitians to use, as a way to cover more territory in their title (since dietitians are nutritionists). I also understand that in some states there may be specific licensure for nutritionists to meet to use that title (even if they're not a RD). I can't speak to every country's laws on dietitians as terminology around regulated health professionals are different from country to country. So before seeking nutrition advice from a nutritionist, wherever you are in the world, be sure to familiarize yourself with the laws governing regulated health professionals in your region to be sure that you are working with a licensed nutrition professional.
    Hi everyone, welcome to Abbey's Kitchen! In todays episode of What I Eat In A Day UA-camr reviews, I will be reviewing NUTRITIONIST Derek Simnett of Simnett Nutrition. A reminder that everything in this video is for entertainment purposes only and you should always seek the advice of a health care provider for your unique case.
    So, lets meet Derek!

    Thanks for the feature Abbey! I appreciate the honest and thoughtful review of my eating. Just as a quick note, in many of my videos I do mention that I supplement with vitamin d3 (lichen sourced) and b12 and that most people (vegan or not) should consider supplementing with these complimented by regular blood testing. I'll make an effort to mention it more as it is very important. I'm glad you enjoy my positive style.

    Came here from Derek's channel, thanks for showing him some love! He definitely doesn't demonize oil, just prefers to get his calories from whole foods that will generally be more nutrient dense. One tablespoon of olive oil has the same number of calories as an entire medium-sized sweet potato - I'd rather have the sweet potato than the oil!

      @@AbbeysKitchen Definitely, agreed! Derek eats oil when he goes out for dinner at restaurants, and in certain processed foods that come with it like Gardein "meats" or Daiya cheese, but more as a treat and less as a staple of the diet. Sneaky calories is the main purpose of avoiding it :)

      She does point out that COLD-PRESSED EXTRA VIRGIN olive oil is a good oil to have, I study nutrition and I believe she is right. It does have nutrients as she says, and also ANTIOXIDANTS. She mentions that different fats have different LIPID PROFILES. This oil has a profile of omega-9 fat which increases the "good" HDL cholesterol and reduces the "bad" LDL cholesterol levels. A study called "PREDIMED" has shown extra virgin olive oil in the mediterranean diet to prevent cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events, diabetes type 2 and some types of cancer (like breast cancer).
      Of course there are "worse" oils out there, very high in inflammatory omega-6, that should be avoided, but extra virgin olive oil is not one of them.

    2:15 I just want to mention that nutritionist is a regulated term in some places! Within Canada, it's regulated in Quebec, Alberta, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Of course, still check their credentials like Abbey said, but it's just worth knowing whether or not they are regulated where you live if you plan to work with them :)

    cutting out oil healed a health problem that I had for years that I went to the doctor over a dozen times about. It was destroying my life and my doctor did not care at all and just prescribed the same pills over and over again in higher doses and they never helped at all! I was also having constant stomach pain and was put on the no FODMAP diet which I found very difficult to follow, and no oil also helped immensely with that.
    I understand it comes off as concerning and too restrictive but it has been so helpful for me.

      Jaded Kate i don‘t have much Choice, the waiting lists are very lengthy. I have been to walk in clinics to avoid seeing her and the doctors there were often not much better. At this point I am so used to doctors not proving any actual help I don‘t expect solutions and rely on my own research as well as trying to see expensive specialists on my own. Of course a lot of them only see patients based on referrals, which my doctor refuses to give me.

    2 things I noticed...While this was a very positive review of a vegan diet, there was an obsession with where Derek gets protein and Derek's choice not to use oil. I found this very frustrating because from someone who speaks for quite a bit about how dieticians are regulated and knowledgeable re: food this shows a lack of understanding regarding the actual needs of the body and the effect unnecessary processed foods like oil can have on it.
    There are very good reasons why we A) don't need to be obsessed about protein and B) should avoid oils.
    Worrying about getting enough protein is really a fool's game because unless you're not eating enough calories you will get enough protein. Recent science says only 5% of our calories need to come from protein. This is an easily achievable goal when consuming sufficient calories. If you're cutting calories for weight loss or in a situation where food is scares, then yes, focusing on protein has benefits. However, Derek was just eating his regular diet presumably to maintain his weight and physique, he got 12% of his calories from protein, more than enough. Consequently, the constant refrain of "good protein sources" just showed me that she is one of the majority of people who still fall under the spell of the protein mythos built up between the 1800s and the 1950s. nutritionfacts.org/audio/how-much-is-enough-protein/
    Also advocating oil as a health food or even a neutral option is not really accurate and could even be considered irresponsible. There is quite a bit of evidence that shows that not only is oil a source of empty calories but that there is an effect on endothelial function and inflammation from any oil... If you want to use oil that's fine, but it's not a health food and shouldn't be considered part of a healthy diet. nutritionfacts.org/topics/oils/
    Note: I cited Nutrition Facts here because it is a nonprofit organization which condenses medical and scientific literature into videos and articles that the average person can understand. All the claims on Nutrition Facts are backed up by sources and cited on the site.

      While what you say is true, bodybuilders benefit from a higher consumption of protein. This is to optimize muscle building, not health. There are currently many studies that suggest that increased consumption of protein is carcinogenic, due to the spike of IGF-1 levels (possibly caused by BCAAs or leucine alone). Science apart, it kinda makes sense that being overly anabolic can be carcinogenic as it promotes elevated tissue synthesis.

      Mug cake - get out everything like you're baking a regular cake, but use less of it! You're still dirtying spoons and measuring cups, but it's being cooked in a mug! Wow! You get to microwave it, which doesn't taste as good, but takes less time! So, a win! Then put back all your baking supplies and you're ready to enjoy your subpar cake.
      Smoothie - get out everything you have in the fridge and pantry and then blend the shit out of it! It's so fast! The blending part. Takes two hours to put all your food back and three hours to deconstruct your blender for cleaning, but then you're all set to enjoy your convenient breakfast.

      @@susannam.9300 I don't eat low fat, just would rather eat whole foods like nuts, avocado, nut butters etc than cook using oil. I don't see why it matters as long as you're getting enough good fats to be healthy. I'd personally rather have rice, beans and avocado as a meal than cook the beans in oil and then not have the avo. Seems more satisfying and tasty to me than what feels like wasted calories from the oil. I love sauteed broccoli too and would rather top with a vegan butter or cheese than cook it in oil, so I can enjoy the flavours of the fats I'm eating. That said the only oil I do use occasionally is sesame oil as it has an amazing flavour and justifies the calories.
      Maybe I haven't experienced the whole 'oil is bad' culture, just seemed like an unnecessary amount of emphasis on oil, on this channel, when it isn't essential for a healthy diet and most people get plenty of it anyway.

      its because of omega 3 to 6 balamce, also heating omega sixes in unhealthy and most oils are not extra virgin and even then they can go bad so eating whole foods is just the healthier. and if u use lots of oils it harder to balance out with omega 3s. and if u would cook with it u would rather add it at the end so it wont heat up, but even then it is low in nutrients and high in calories

    • @saraangel6696
      @saraangel6696 4 роки тому +9

      That’s kind of stupid. Extra virgin olive oil, for example, is literally cold pressed and maybe winterized and that’s it. One could argue that the tahini and mustard he uses are as processed or more than a cold pressed oil.

    • @elleriberaphoto
      @elleriberaphoto 4 роки тому +8

      @@saraangel6696 There are different levels of processed foods- foods like oils have had the fiber as well as many nutrients removed, where as tahini is just ground sesamee seeds with nothing added and nothing taken away, so it is less processed than oils. Tahini is healthier than sesame oil because it retains the fiber and nutrients. Olives are healthier than olive oil for the same reason. Is olive oil still healthier than palm oil? Of course -but that doesn't make it a healthy food when compared to the actual unprocessed, whole food form of fat.

    • @saraangel6696

      Elle Ribera it’s not “healthier”, it’s just more complex. If that was the case and he was aiming for what you call healthier, then he wouldn’t eat white rice, for example, because the fiber and protein have been removed from the grain, leaving only the carbohydrate rich part. It’s just BS excuses for justifying not using oil.

      @@nikola206 they do have a much different lifestyle, which is part of the reason why I would love to see Abbey do a review! I think it would make for a nice change from all of the influencers and diet culture that many seem to promote.
      Ben, Gwen and the other runners I follow and look up to seem to view nutrition as an essential part of their training process. As important as any of the running, strength training, prehab or rehab work! They fuel their bodies with enough food (no restricting), and try to eat good balances of carbs, protein and healthy fats to support the activity they are doing. Some supplements as well, yes, but I believe they both get regular bloodwork done and consult with doctors or other health practitioners to decide which supplements are needed.
      They do live very different lifestyles, especially compared to the average individual, but I think the takeaway of: "eat enough, eat real food with a balanced diet, seek the advice of professionals to decide how to supplement" are things that can be applied to everyone!

      alysen87 I know. I was agreeing with you? It’s her that I think needs to do more research than just watch their videos when it comes to running, as just saying “get some more protein” and commenting on how appetising meals look doesn’t quite cut it when you’re reviewing someone who runs ultramarathons

    Nobody can give Derek advice in nutrition. His lifestyle concerning diet and exercise while enjoying himself is perfect. He inspired me so much to eat healthy and do exercise that I actually like and be more active
