Today, they take us through the lessons they have learned managing nannies over the years, and shed light on the whole process!

I buy my nanny lotion and pads every month. Last year Dec, when she was going home, I did shopping for her mom. The mother was so happy, my nanny came back with mangoes, unga ya uji, omena and beans.

Tip: On the day your househelp is coming for the first time to your house, make sure it is very clean and everything is in order. That way they know your house has a certain standard of cleanliness that should always be maintained like so 😉

I've had only one nanny over 11 years. I'm her 1st employer. She came when my 1st born was 4 days old.
We had a mutual agreement on boundaries and very clear (written) expectations both ways. Signed a renewable contract. I give her an annual increment as well as an extra half salary as December bonus. We've had our run-ins but our boundaries, expectations and contract keep things in check.

I pray mine stays with me just as much. I don't have kids nor am I married. But since I moved out of my parents house, I got a help. She is a day bug. And so far it has been over 5 years together.
The only issue we have had is when I wanted her to adapt the Konmari method of arranging clothes. That was last year. She has now adapted even the color coding.
I am so appreciative of her.
I love this!!!! Addition to being self sufficient and trusting your gut when it comes to your kids, my tip is to interrupt the routine. Like randomly offer to bathe the kids, ask questions, cook, wash your house randomly. You might learn something that's going on that you don't like.
One tip I'd add is that when they leave especially if its on bad terms, you can draft a kasmall document and make them sign saying they have received all their dues. Just in case they decide to frustrate you. Or every time you pay them, have them sign. You can also appreciate them by enrolling them into a short course like tailoring or beauty school especially if their schedule isn't crazy. Looking forward to more IssaMotherhood episodes.

Why would the nanny need to sign something to prove they've been paid though? Do Americans not pay their nanny's wages straight into their bank account? Money transfers from your account to theirs as evidenced by both parties' bank statements. I don't get it.
@@kerrytaylor1795 if you're talking Americans, most can't afford nannies and if they do, its hourly so you pay them in cash or bank transfer and you have to include that in your tax returns. If a family can afford a full time nanny they have pay slips and shit and are taxed. The system is very different
Just pay via mpesa so thatway there are records..I never pay with cash
My mum, being a theatre nurse, had a pretty tight and unpredictable schedule. One morning, my then nanny decides she wants to go home as my mum prepares to go to work. Mum begs her to stay for at least a day ajiorganize because the off was short notice. Mum goes to work, then later gets a hysterical call from her then Indian neighbor," Your maid is dangling the baby on the balcony!" You can imagine the panic mum had. She drops everything, rushes home and releases her immediately. I was left with a neighbor coz she was to be on duty in the operating theatre that afternoon. 😩✌

Sorry about that experience.
Find out what their dreams and ambitions are and find out how best you can assist to achieve them.if its a course,pay for their fees especially if you dont have kids and give them a few hours a day to go take the class,and they always help u find a replacement for you as they transition and grow into their new life.they always make sure they leave you with a good person.

I think this is a very useful video. Thank you. All I would add is treat them the way you want to be treated at your work place and by your boss or supervisor. They are human just like you. You are their boss but you are not a superior being than them.

Am lucky to have had two nannies in 4 yrs..Patience is the biggest key.Give them increments every yr.if at work u get increments they also deserve it.
Try to assist in some chores esp weeknds.i cook most sundays as she rests and watches TV.or comes from her off.Sunday is also family time.where we are just us.

Man, there is no time or enough space to explain my nanny experience. But it reached a point I chokad and now because of PTSD, I manage the house and kids my self and balance that with work. I am happier for it now, maybe one day I'll get another one, but for now, this is working.

When hiring, i make them sign a contract(which we go through with them) outlining the expectations as discussed. When paying their monthly salary, i also make them sign whether i pay via mpesa or cash. I buy the salary voucher from the supermarket.

I'm so late to the game here but I'm really glad I stumbled upon this. Mid 30s, no kids of my own but I've helped out family members and friends with various home management issues. I was really waiting for that "remember that this person is a human being". This is such a crucial thing to remember as an employer in any environment. Now here's someone who you're trusting with your home, kids... and then people still get petty about things like giving them your wifi password. Haiya!
I've seen situations where a domestic worker has saved an emergency situation where they had run out of airtime but were able to make emergency calls via WhatsApp. And right now during Covid, the fact that my help can video call with their family means that they're not in and out of the compound, exposing themselves (and me!) unnecessarily.

To add on to the rewards, get NHIF . This covers them and their kids. She can register as self employed and you pay directly via Mpesa . Knowing her kids are covered is a motivation for her as well. Plus you don't need to give her cash for the small small illnesses. I waited 6 months till I offered her NHIF
