  • In day 5 of this survival series we try again for a spring turkey to turn into a meal. Zach builds a bushcraft table and we dig into our food spoils collected so far. I'll boil up some cattails and eat alewife which we netted earlier in this season. Lobster is also a staple item in this adventure so we check our traps again to see if we'll eat or not.
Full Season 5 Playlist: • Season 5: The Wilderne...
I will show you how to prepare, clean, and cook porcupine in a very simple stew.
We also are looking for other wild foods like turkey as it is the spring season. We do manage to get a red squirrel in a catch and cook which we add to our smoked fish.
The goal is to replace any calories we burn foraging for wild foods in order to balance our energy expenditures as modern foragers.
We bait our lobster traps with alewife or river herring which we dip netted the day before. This is all about survival and eating the foods that we can easily forage and scavenge from wild sources. We are really trying to balance our calories eating only wild edibles.
We will show you how to cook and clean the clams and eat the stomach. We will remove the skin and also purge and wash the clams and boil in water.

The Wilderness Living Challenge is not a "survival challenge," but more like a test of the modern hunter gatherer to sustain himself on wild foods only. We will weight ourselves at the start of the challenge and weight out at the end. If we lose any weight at all, we lose the challenge!
Check out Zach Fowler: • Catch And Cook Alewife...
Follow along as we struggle to get wild foods!
I am joined by Zach Fowler on his home turf in Maine, USA in the spring.
Here, we plan to do Season 5 of The Wilderness Living Challenge. The goal of the challenge is to gain or maintain our body weight eating only the wild food we can collect on site using whatever means necessary.
Winning the Wilderness Living Challenge is harder than it seems.
Season 5: Maine Spring, takes place in Maine, USA with coastal food priorities including fish, clams, crab, seaweed, groundhog, pigeon, turkey, dandelion, cattail, and whatever else is edible! Nothing is off the menu, if it's edible, we'll eat it.
We make use of all the resources in this challenge to meet the demands for calories imposed by the human body!

In Georgia (not state of America) we call this "corn cake" "MCHADI" it is a georgian tradition dish, here we have meny different kinds of MCHADI with cheese and many different things inside of it. you can search it on youtube "მჭადი" (copy this word which means MCHADI in georgian lanuage) or "ჭვიშტარი" (which means mchadi with cheese) and watch any video how people actually make it. i think you will like it.

I can tell you're doing better on this season than the first. I love that you're living off the land but also using all the tools at your disposal. You made a point from S1 that it's nearly impossible to fully live off nature, even with our tools due to the modern world's patterns, habits, and laws.

I'd be hard pressed to consider maintaining my weight, eating what you're eating. It doesn't get any better than lobster and clams, but they're so low in fat, it's not worth mentioning. If I wanted to maintain over a week, I'd set a dozen hooks in any water, overnight, with strips of gasperau for bait and try for eels. They're not my preferred fish, but they are a sure catch and can be cooked numerous ways. Smoked would be my favourite. I'd be very hard pressed to not have carbs for a week, and I'd have to take something like Quaker Oats to eat morning and just before bed. Flour would be second, to make bannock, but more work. Not sure if carbohydrates are required to keep your weight up. Hope you meet your goal weight wise. Interesting challenge. You should pork up from a turkey though. Good luck. p.s. You're killing me with all those lobsters and clams. Cheers.

Watching you with that turkey call is, for some reason, is like watching an old dubbed Japanese Godzilla film. There's just such a disconnect from what you would expect to hear coming out of your mouth, and what actually does.

Zachary without his hat and face bandana is both creepy and trippy. It took me ages to figure out it was him.
You can tell Chris miles away from his rugged eyes but Zach is hard to spot.
We should crowdfund a Wilderness Living Survival trip. Send them to an area to live off the land without vehicles, different state or area they are used to.

Full stop and to and we your question yes I'm watching the pond series and cabin series. Great work! Maybe next year you should plant a small garden at the location where you plan on filming nothing big just something like a pallet garden. Justc a thought.

Full stop. Loved the video! Couldn't wait to watch it!. Now that you have your blind set up hopefully inn the right spot due to scouting. Get there in the dark when they are asleep make no noise set up and sit still. Make a call or two then shut up. A hen they calls constantly is desperate and is a human hungry for meat. Next vid better be of you blasting a tom!

19:40 Never, ever forage along roadways, launch ramps, marinas, etc... because of the toxic waste from the vehicles (autos and boats) gets onto and soaks into your food.

George Washington wrote about the shad run and the importance of smoking them. Maybe you just answered a big question I had about why it was important. Townsend and sons on you tube did a video on that also you should check it out. Right now I am salt drying a stripe bass like salt cod was done. I wanna see if it will work for long term storage.

I think you should work on something together more often like building something etc I know you have separate channels and viewers but it's really nice to watch you work together (yes I know splitting responsibilities works better)

Once I was hiking in the woods, and as came over a hill, there were about a dozen turkeys all in a circle talking to each other down below. They flipped out as soon as they saw me, of course. Have you ever come across anything like that? I imagine you could have taken full advantage of such a chance encounter if you had been there.

@27:36 in the video... I tried something like once upon a time ago. The Axe just passed a hairs breath from my inside left ankle. The next swing I planned on being more careful. The axe head grazed the target and, again, a fraction of an inch from my inner left ankle. This was decades ago and I have NEVER attempted to handle an axe since. A MOST vivid memory to this day.

I buy I to this challenge however I don't think you have enough people to make it feesable. IF you do another season maybe try to get 4-5 people to participate if you can this would allow the devision of chores and tasks

You know ... some of the most stoopid two-legged turkeys in the forest are humans.

Is baiting turkeys legal in Maine? That's how my dad always hunted them in Virginia.
