I never realized how jarring the Maul reveal must be for someone who's only seen the mainline movies. He got chopped in half like 25 years ago and is now a drug lord.

I’ve been a die hard Star Wars fan my entire life. And I honestly still am. It becomes 100% more enjoyable if you avoid the online discussion and make up your own mind on things. I still LOVE discussing Star Wars. But I have to be careful to avoid how much hate there is in the fanbase. The sequels REALLY broke the community. You really have to sort through online communities to find people who just love talking about it. I have been disappointed with Disney’s use of the franchise recently. I thought Mando Season 3 was a huge step down to the point of being utterly forgettable and pointless. Kenobi and Boba Fett were also baffling wastes of potential. But on the other side, Andor is AMAZING, Ahsoka was pretty great imo, and Bad Batch has mostly been awesome! So I still adore Star Wars. It’s just that the content that’s being released is WAY more inconsistent because of how much of it there is.
I'm the person who will so as far as to say, "The Fanbase is ruining Star Wars." And people wonder why they stopped making movies and focus on TV Shows.
@@killer92173It’s not a mystery and thank god they don’t. I don’t want the mouse anywhere near Star Wars, the shows are already doing enough damage as is. If they just stop making Star Wars forever I’d be happy.
I remember reading the leaked script, where Kylo was just thrown down the hole and never seen again. I legitimately thought that's how his character ended. I was incredibly relieved in the theatre when he actually climbed back up... only for him to die anyway lol.
And.... if you really wanna be an asshole, how about when Rey slices Kylo’s vehicle and sends it crashing and exploding and he walks out without a scratch
In Rise of Skywalker's defense, I walked out of it still liking Star Wars. I walked out of Cats not sure if I liked visual media anymore. EDIT: Holy shit, I made modern Star Wars fans agree on something without the use of Baby Yoda or the “I’m Han Solo” song.

She got the Boba Fett treatment. You can say he is a better character because he's been there since ESB, has a lot of material outside the movies and looks cool , was made to sell toys. But it's exactly similar to phasma lol.
I think they knew exactly what they wanted with the design. It’s just a chrome colored stormtrooper. I don’t think she was supposed to be iconic and memorable in the first place.

I like all 11 movies, The Clone Wars, Rebels, and honestly even resistance is cool too. OGs are all perfect. The phantom menace is really cool because I love the characters and seeing Anakin as a boy. Attack of the clones is just a fun movie. ROTS is the best movie in the Star Wars universe just because it’s so epic. I like the sequels because the characters are good and they have a lot of cool action. And Kylo Ren is cool.
Forest Whittaker's death is even more annoying because his character is shown to have a limp as well as problems breathing. Instead of saying "I'm done running" (one of the most fucking cliche lines I can think of, and it means nothing because we've never seen him run from danger), have him say "I won't make it to the ship, I'll just slow you down. If you want to help me, avenge me." That would have made sense, and it would have given what's-her-face motivation to fight the Empire.
I was so disappointed when the New Republic was just destroyed and instantly forgotten about in the film. Not only is it stupid (how the hell did the First Order build the base and capture all of the Galaxy?) but it kind of ruined the chance to do something new. Like imagine a conventional war between the First Order and New Republic, with the Force Awakens plot being about the Resistance trying find evidence that they are building a super weapon so they can convince the Senate to declare war. But no, we just got Empire vs Rebels 2.0
I would've loved to more see a new enemy or something new not like another planet destroyer, just some new faction there could be like some imperial remnants but not a way stronger empire
And now we have shows like the Mandalorian desperately trying to make it work by turning the New Republic into a deeply incompetent "rule by committee" failed state, because that's the only way any of the sequel movies make any sense whatsoever. Honestly, I wish they would just steer away from the films entirely with the spinoffs, but I guess Disney wants their films to actually matter.
I love Cosmonaut’s editing so much!! It just makes me smile and laugh and have a good time watching. I get kinda distracted with really wild editing, but this isn’t boring or stagnant either

You forgot Kylo's second fake out death where he's thrown down a shaft while being electrocuted, but apparently that doesn't kill you in Star Wars. Expecting a Mace Windu return twist any day now where it's revealed that he is actually Lando's father
Pairing Poe and Finn could have led to some great arcs. Finn teaches Poe through their own adventure that there is a deep personal cost to war, culminating with Finn sacrificing himself at the end of the movie to save everyone else. This changes Poe, now he's personally lost someone. He's still the ace pilot, but he's now leading a bit more with his head, instead of his heart. He's now someone who considers those around him, as opposed to being the hero. The next movie you could have had Poe establishing a Star Wars version of Top Gun - a group of elite pilots to help fight the First Order. One of the new characters is basically a younger version of Poe; a hot shot who only thinks about themselves and their ego and being a glory-hunter, leading to a lot of clashing between them as Poe is essentially dealing with his own demons, showing that Poe truly has grown as a person, while also dealing with Finn's death. Perhaps he feels guilt over what he sees as selfishness; Finn had to die to teach Poe a lesson, when he'd gladly give it up just to have his friend back.
Finn is the most wasted potential in the history of cinema. I really loved his arc in the first movie. He was my favorite, and then they threw it all in the garbage.
I think 99% of people agree with you. I remember going into the last Jedi thinking, "Okay. This is where Finn will start getting awesome." To say the least, I was very wrong.
Honestly if the ex storm trooper trained to be a Jedi, that would have been the coolest shit in the entire world. I’d probably actually CARE a bit more.
Clefton Mee too! His story in TFA was so great and it just went downhill from there (like the movies, with the exception of solo) Could you imagine if he AND Rey were the main characters in the whole trilogy for the whole trilogy, that’d be awesome! A stormtrooper that left the first order to become a rebel, and then (this is imaginary) became a Jedi?! And rebuilt the Jedi order along with a scavenger that’s also force sensitive, that would’ve been so cool Oh well
I actually thought Finn was going to wield a light saber and gain a connection to the force whilst still being a skilled blaster shooter. It'd have been cool as he didn't have a major connection to the jedi directly. He did hold his own against Kylo after all.
Agreed. I was so excited when Finn and Rey were introduced; I felt like both had a ton of potential and were going to be really fun to watch, but then they threw Finn to the side and kept tricking us about what Rey could do and who she was.
Caitlyn Winkler Exactly. I have no clue why they just wasted Finn after TFA. Having a woman as the MAIN main protagonist isn’t a problem at all, I’m fine with that. But you could still have good stories and development for other characters! Especially the character that, if we’re being honest, was kind of marketed as the main character in the first movie! Finn was always seen holding the lightsaber in promotional material, including trailers. To have Rey be the kind of secret real main character in the first movie and then be the real main character moving forward is fine, but to just entirely waste him is just such an unnecessary and stupid thing to do! His arc in TFA was to fantastic and compelling, and the could’ve done some great stuff with him in the future, but no we need ReY pAlPaTiNe. Oh sorry, this was pretty long.😅
I forgot about that one. And a sixth when Kylo gets booted from the throne room, before he climbs up to revive Rey. Core theme of this movie: death is an absolute mad lad.

He had such good potential in nine. He's force sensitive and finds another stormtrooper like him who was inspired by him and left? And they don't do ANYTHING with these plots! Why?
@@thespectaculargamernerd8114 Cuz they didn't plan out the trilogy and Rian Johnson made some changes which Abrams had a hard time to adapt to Episode 9, if only Disney made a plan, everything would've gone smoothly or if at least Abrams or Johnson directed the whole trilogy.
They wasted practically everyone's character in these movies. Aside from Luke, I think Phasma got the worst treatment. She was so hyped up before the movie came out but turned out to be absolute shit.
The only real issue I had with Kylo is that he removed his mask so early. I'm sure people were ok with it, but it seemed like a really weird choice to me.
That was the best move ever, and it's a great visual portrayal of how differently Abrams and Johnson saw Kylo as a character. Abrams wanted to create Vader's loyal successor, the fan-service-ish villian, and Johnson practically mocked that decision with the "take that ridiculous thing off" line. He couldn't wait to work with Adam and show the true potential of both character and actor without the mask to hide his emotions.
I think it helps because Kylo isn’t fully embracing the Dark Side, he’s always conflicted with light and dark and him being in and out of his helmet does show that. Helmet on is usually pure Dark Side and when he takes it off the light is able to effect him, as much as I think it would be really awesome to have Adam Driver act with the helmet for most of the first movie atleast I understand wanting to show his face so people can sympathize with him more

That being said, I fully understand why people dislike the movie since it relies on the cheapest and easiest tricks in the book to try to make fans happy, sort of like jingling a pair of keys in front of a baby's face.
Exactly! I still never support what Rian Johnson did to Luke Skywalker. I get it. I get what he means and discovering a new character arc and all that stuff but come on. Luke was totally destroyed in this film.
I'm to this day just baffled how Disney paid so much money for the most important IP in their catalogue, then proceeded to not plan the whole trilogy out and contract a director for all 3. That's the foundation of all the issues here.
It's a reveal that made sense, considering how thoroughly embarrassed Hux is over the course of the first two films. I would expect him to pin that on Kylo and want to get back at him for it, but him shouting "I'M THE SPY" was a bit on-the-nose. I think TROS would have been a much better movie if they dedicated some screentime to actually show what the characters are feeling and to elaborate on major plot points. Especially the force healing thing. They should have explained that. Even if it was something stupid like "because you are the last jedi the light side is more concentrated and you've unlocked force powers that exist only in myth" or something. anyways that's my hot take i'm just some nerd on the internet and will stop ranting to strangers now

The problem with the "Finn is a scarred child-soldier"-story is that finn doesnt act like he is affected by war and killing in the first movie. I dont say he has to be a depressed character or stuff like that but killing dozens of his former co-workers while cheering is just not fitting for someone who is affected by war. Its just tonal dissonance from The Force Awakens. I think the reason why Finn is depicted, that he has to learn that war is bad, is because he doesnt act like war is bad.

Rey as "Disney princess in space" I love that. Absolutely love Rey in The Force Awakens. Since all three movies were not planned out together, we'll never know quite what the plan was for her, but the title The Force Awakens seems to imply that her sudden abilities was brought on by the Force....awakening. Seeing TFA in a vaccuum, I was also under the assumption something was up with Finn too, having to do with the movie title, given his sudden awakening and defection, and his sudden courage at the end...and sadly we barely saw this develop on screen after that. That's all the say I was OK with sudden Force abilities, even without being related to anyone special.
My issue with Rey's abilities is not whether or not she's related to Somebody, or whether or not she's strong in the Force. It's that she's amazing at so much with zero explanation. Piloting? Repairs? Deliberate use of Force abilities? Don't ask questions.
@@TheSchultinator wrong. Rey is a scavenger so she knows her way around a ship, AND it was said before that she's flown ships before. It's been shown MULTIPLE TIMES that you can use the force without training. Luke did it in episode 5 on Hoth.
@BlackbirdRX Just because Rey's a scavenger does not immediately make her an excellent mechanic, especially with systems she shouldn't have any familiarity with. Knowing what's a valuable part and where it can be found is not the same as knowing how it works or interacts with anything else, especially if all the ships Rey picks through are shattered hulks. Similarly, knowing how to fly to some level does not mean she is able to throw an old ship around like a starfighter. That's like taking a civvie Cessna pilot and expecting him to out-fly Maverick; it defies logic. I would like to say, the more down the rabbit hole I’ve gone for TLJ, the more I’ve learned Rian Johnson didn’t get to put a good amount of what he wanted into the final cut. The ironic thing is Johnson initially had the subplot involve Finn and Poe but claimed he found their dialogue “interchangeable” so he replaced Poe with a new character.
The Throne Room scene in TLJ is just A+ from start to finish. It's so good. Imperfect movie, but it delivered one of the best moments in the whole franchise. "You're nothing, you're nobody... But not to me." is one of the most compelling moments of a villain tempting the hero I've seen in a movie (based on everything we know about Rey up to that point) and I legit wasn't sure what was gonna happen next the first time I saw it.
I think the biggest issue with the throne room scene is the fact that Snoke never got a chance to shine as a character. Kylo betraying him was kind of undercut by the fact that we had no idea who he was or what his and Kylo's relationship was really like. Was it abusive? Manipulative? We can kind of get a sense of that from this scene but it's literally the first time it happened. Was Snoke a father figure to Kylo or more of a boss/ruler? We have no idea and it makes his death fall flat for me. Instead of feeling excitement that Kylo made this incredible decision, I was only left with a feeling of confusion. I thought, "Oh, I guess he's dead now. Why was he in the movie again?" In a vacuum the scene is great, but in context it feels unearned and rushed.
Speaking of The Rise of Skywalker’s opening crawl, the message Palpatine sends across the galaxy is only heard off-screen in Fortnite. Fortnite is now part of Star Wars canon.
I don't get it why couldn't he only had rey to be his love interest and have some love triangle between finn rey and kylo And i think that they didn't focus on finn being is cuz globally there are still a lot of countries that don't accept homosexuality and it's in Disney's interest not to include a big box office franchise like sw

Man I think this is the first Last Jedi take that is similar to how I viewed the movie. It kinda reminded of the feeling of reading a great author's debut novel. They have some really interesting innovative choices combined with some pretty obvious lows. I'm partial to this type of fiction but I understand if people are more tripped up by the negatives. The lack of acknowledgment of any of the positives almost pushed me into a camp of defending this movie as if it was 2001 A Space Odyssey when it was really just a decentish star wars movie that didn't have a third death star.
Just watched all 3 of your "Every Star Wars Movie Reviewed" videos. Of the bazillions of reviews on UA-cam, I think your take on these movies is the best. I saw the first movie on opening day in 1977, when I was 7, so I've experienced the whole run in real time. You really managed to pinpoint so many of the highs and lows of the 3 trilogies. Thanks!
On your point on Finn’s arc being repeated across TFA and TLJ I do feel there is a slight distinction that, while underdeveloped from an execution standpoint, is nonetheless important to contextualise why Finn is given the side plot in TLJ. In TFA, Finn does *not* join the resistance. Not even unofficially. He abandons the First Order and wants to run, his motivation only changing to go and save Rey. He says as much to Han right when they’re on the base and Han is apoplectic that Finn technically used the Resistance for his own means. Finn gets knocked out defending Rey. TLJ starts Finn off with this exact same motivation. His first line waking from unconsciousness is shouting “Rey!” And then his next line is asking Poe, “Where’s Rey?”. He still has not joined the resistance and that is why he gets the proper war=bad lesson arc as other loose he has no reason to stay with the Resistance after he finds Rey again.
The "no homo" plot fail of The Last Jedi is like a lightbulb where I was like god damn, you're right, and now I'm angry we didn't get a Finn teaching Poe a lesson about war plot.
Finn was so wasted, especially by TLJ. Force Awakens makes him goofier than he should be, but TLJ with the Canto-nonsense really ignores his child soldier backstory.
I had the exact same reaction if you cut out Rose and also probably purple haired girl and just had a plot with those two the movie would probably be a lot better and like a half hour shorter too.
Apart from that the Luke scene in Mando is a rehash of the fight scene they showed five minutes earlier because in Mando everything, everything fucking repeats. All the time. The lines, the plot beats, the fights. If it looked halfway cool - do it thrice. Even the damn tag lines like 'l have spoken' would have worked if used two or three times in the show but the kept and kept on milking it. The Mando script is hilariously stupid. Have a great day!

Catherine the first, Theodora and Toyotomi Hideyoshi are all examples of peasants who eventually became kings or queens of their respective empires. There is also plenty of modern day stories of complete nobodies who were able to become millionaires. This kind of scenario, while rare, is not impossible. It sends a message that true power comes not from bloodlines, but from one’s self, which while may not be realistic, is still a better message to send then just be the chosen one or you’re useless. If we get the same Star Wars story for the rest of our lives, nobody will care anymore.
I definitely get the idea, but reddit just wanted Rey's skills to make sense... They could just as easily have gone with the explanation that Kylo accidentally imprinted some of his Force knowledge on her while he was torturing her, since it was still a new type of torture we hadn't seen much of before. People just wanted her to be related to someone powerful so we could better stomach that she's doin' all this cool shit without so much as even a line to acknowledge how good at everything Force-related she is.
I think that’s not the smartest thing to say, even though it’s a joke. I know a lot of people on reddit just wanted her powers to make sense, not necessarily just make her related to someone
@@jhanno3771 Completely ruins her character arc. I can stomach not seeing yet another training montage. It's really not that important. Thematically for Star Wars as a whole it was such a beautiful sentiment that Rey was a nobody; it meant someone, anyone, could be the hero. Bloodlines and Chosen Ones are some of the most overused aspects of fantasy literature. As someone who's read and watched a lot in the genre of fantasy, it's always refreshing to see a writer try to break the conventions. That's what TLJ was at its best, and yet it was all effortlessly reversed in ROS. It's a real shame.
@Last Christmas I gave u my Fart The prequels try to turn Anakin into more of a Mary Sue than the sequels did with Rey. In the Phantom Menace, why bother showing him constructing the equivalent of an F1 car and rebuilding an android when it has not relevance for his character going forward?
@@jimjam7928 Whoops, there's a comma in my original comment that wasn't meant to be there. It should read "People just wanted her to be related to someone powerful so we could stomach..." as in, people wanted it for a utilitarian reason, not a thematic one. The same function could have been served by another explanation, there's far from just one reason a writer could come up with for why she woke up one day and had tons of Force power. The one I mentioned about Ren accidentally giving her some of his Force ability was an explanation that seemed to be canon for a while, apparently it was in one of the comics or books or whatever. Plus, there are thousands of Jedi in the Prequels, all of which with their own descendants and bloodlines, but the sequels chose to close the loop instead of expanding the world. I'll add more of my thoughts in the hopes of being clearer, in case anyone cares about another rando's thoughts In TLJ it's strongly implied that Rey became powerful with the Force because Kylo Ren was getting stronger as well, and Rey was given power to balance his strength. For all the praise that it made Rey and others into self-made characters free of bloodline ties, what it really did when viewed as a whole was remove any individual imperative to actually work at this stuff. If it gets too imbalanced on one side, the Force will magic an opposite-side person into being. Makes the whole "destiny" thing extremely literal, as Rey didn't really have to do anything to become nearly as powerful as, if not more powerful than, Kylo. Meanwhile Kylo trained for over a decade with multiple Force masters, but is beaten twice in a row by someone who thought the Force was a myth literal days ago. Someone, anyone, being the hero is absolutely commendable. But they still have to work for it, they have to struggle to get there, it's how the audience is shown they should root for that character as they overcome their weaknesses and acquire strengths. Luke *was* related to a powerful Jedi, yet still took three movies to get to where Rey got to in roughly the first 40 minutes of TFA.. I don't like the bloodlines thing much either myself, but it was something that in my experience most fans only wanted so that it could explain why Rey didn't have to train with it to become more powerful than 99.9% of the Force users shown in the movies. Like I said, there are definitely other ways to explain that exact plot point without falling back on "she's related to X person you've heard of who is strong." The issue with TLJ is that while it provided an explanation for that plot point, which TFA explicitly set up to be answered later (you don't write in dialogue explicitly questioning someone's actions or abilities if you don't intend to touch on that question later, that's basic setup and payoff, screenwriting 101), TLJ did so at the cost of any semblance of stakes in the galaxy. If the state of the universe gets too bad, the Force will always just create more good to defeat the bad. If the heroes are winning too much, the Force will pull a dick move and draw some of them towards the dark side to get the massacres fired back up. The treatment of the Force was one of many things TLJ did that practically broke core elements of the series. And I say all this as someone who went into 7, 8, and 9 as the most detached and casual fan possible. I haven't read the books, watched the TV shows, read the comics, bought any of the toys or merch, and I don't think I've seen any of the movies more than two or three times all the way through or even watched episode 6 all the way through. I don't defend the prequels over the sequels either, my list from #1-#9 goes 5 4 6 7 9 8 3 1 2. Even then, the first viewing I was mostly confused by what they were going for, but the second viewing I started to see how TLJ was outright throwing away stuff I'd thought was firmly established by the movies before it, even while the new trilogy still wanted me to think of the old movies in order to draw meaningful connections to many of the stories' elements. Rewatching TLJ felt like cognitive dissonance in the form of a blockbuster movie. And that was before I started seeing several-hour reviews of it start popping up, where people who had actually been attached to the material and weren't turned completely off by the prequels went over in detail just how many different ways 8 went against things established in 4-6, then in 1-3, then in 7, and even in 8 itself. It's just... not good. Needed a script doctor, one armed with shears hopefully. Writing is hard, writing a script that subverts everyone's expectations when a lot of people's expectations were just "this piece of the story has an explanation, and the second movie/*eighth season* will likely answer it in some interesting way without raising new questions that will never be solved" is generally a bad idea. Johnson wanted to outsmart the Internet by cutting most of the mysteries off at the knees instead of just building on them and extending them into the third movie where appropriate. Rey didn't have to be Leia's cousin or whatever for the plot to make sense, but that's the easiest answer, so of course it got the most attention on voting-based platforms like social media sites like reddit. Instead, the answer seems to be that the Force gave her light side power for free because there was too much dark side power in the galaxy. Which would make perfect sense, if there weren't 7 previous movies of times where the Force was described differently than that, or where the Force behaved differently from that, or if that didn't kind of rob any sense of tension from the events of the saga, since we know A) that there can never be a state where the heroes are winning for too long, because it will cause a spontaneous Force-generated dark side uprising, and B) that there can never be a state where the villains are winning for too long because the reverse will happen. The prequels did this too with the prophecy. The Force being some kind of galactic will was always a mistake, and it continued into this trilogy, unfortunately. TL;DR TLJ bad, Satan bless any fool who actually reads all this
11:03 In hindsight, the Andor TV show filled in all the blanks. Kind of reminds me of how Filoni filled in all the blanks of the prequels in the Clone Wars.

Also, why the hell is it called a "Resistance" when the republic is on their side, shouldn't the first order be called that?
And now we have shows like the Mandalorian desperately trying to make it work by turning the New Republic into a deeply incompetent "rule by committee" failed state, because that's the only way any of the sequel movies make any sense whatsoever.
I wanted to see another Black Jedi
Also Kylo Ren
I think 99% of people agree with you. I remember going into the last Jedi thinking, "Okay. This is where Finn will start getting awesome." To say the least, I was very wrong.
@Seagull I honestly wouldn't mind if Rey and Finn became Jedi, it doesn't have to be like the original trilogy where only one person becomes a Jedi.
Honestly if the ex storm trooper trained to be a Jedi, that would have been the coolest shit in the entire world.

Clefton Mee too! His story in TFA was so great and it just went downhill from there (like the movies, with the exception of solo)
Could you imagine if he AND Rey were the main characters in the whole trilogy for the whole trilogy, that’d be awesome! A stormtrooper that left the first order to become a rebel, and then (this is imaginary) became a Jedi?! And rebuilt the Jedi order along with a scavenger that’s also force sensitive, that would’ve been so cool
Oh well
I actually thought Finn was going to wield a light saber and gain a connection to the force whilst still being a skilled blaster shooter.

@@daboi8734 hit the nail right on the head
@@AnastasiaAisling
And thats why this trilogy sucks, is one director trying to mock the other, without trying to make a good cohesive story

My favorite part of TROS was when Hux screams "IM THE SPY" then dies
Screaming Fred Weasley

Last, saying that Luke having to really focus to be able to pull a lightsaber is in any way equivalent to Rey using the Force to counter a mind probe and then mindtrick a guard is so disingenuous.

The shit action ruins that scene and the part where Rey and Kylo fight over Anakins lightsaber is kinda stupid. Definitely not the best moment.

I'll add more of my thoughts in the hopes of being clearer, in case anyone cares about another rando's thoughts
In TLJ it's strongly implied that Rey became powerful with the Force because Kylo Ren was getting stronger as well, and Rey was given power to balance his strength.

In hindsight, the Andor TV show filled in all the blanks. Kind of reminds me of how Filoni filled in all the blanks of the prequels in the Clone Wars.
Before Rey and Ben kissed, I was sitting there in the cinema thinking "no, don't kiss, don't kiss..."
Anders Eklöf the kiss was a terrible idea. It didn’t make any sense at all.
Finn should’ve been with Rey since he wasn’t an unstable maniac for the last 2 movies.
I like how in the theater I was at, everyone just laughed like in a sitcom
Ben and Rey: (kiss)
Everyone: lol
Ben: (dies)
Everyone: LOL
Literally the exact same thing
My friend shouted FUCK NO and everyone else was just laughing at how ridiculous that scene was
