    I hope you know and that people tell you you're one of (if not the) best representation of informative, thoughtful, well researched and entertaining through quality video gaming videos on UA-cam. It's especially relevant to have someone with an European perspective, providing the rest of the world with insights on the Amigas and Spectrums that they probably know little about.
    I've long watched your videos (ever since the Kimble Justice days, actually), but I didn't possess an YT account. Now that I do, thank you so much for all the videos you uploaded and allowed us to enjoy throughout the years!

    I distinctly remember continually asking my parents to buy me Alien Syndrome on Amiga for ages after it was advertised in pretty much every mag at the time. I never got it :(. 30 years later though, I’m happy to say I own it on original floppies! It’s not the greatest game, but whenever I look at the box, nostalgia flows through my otherwise cold, calloused heart

    There's a much better homebrew port of AlienStorm for the Amiga, much closer to the arcade, but they pretended it was playing through a game gear fro some bizarre reason.

    I can't possibly imagine why the hell they never ported it to the Genesis, it basically would have been arcade perfect.

    Some trivia, Alien Storm was inspired by The 1982 The Thing, and even includes sound effects taken directly from that film.

    I absolutely adore Alien Storm, it was one of my favourites back in the day. I've lost count how many times I've played it, not always to completion mind you... but it's still incredibly good fun.
    Brilliant work as usual, Kim!

    I have no experience with alien syndrome but I have a ton of experience playing the arcade version of alien storm. This was an arcade game that was lucky enough to be at our local arcade back in the day. It was a ton of fun to play, and I'll always consider it to be one of those timeless arcade classics.

    I had great memories and love for Alien Syndrome in the arcades. That was shattered when I bought it on the Amstrad. The guy fires when he’s killed? How!? Damn ACE!!! The C64 version is pretty damn good except for that push scrolling

    in the old days an existing title coded from scratch to run on a new system was not called a port.
    The term port was reserved for games running on systems it was not originally coded for but made use of the original assets so you got a near identical copy to the original, whether the port ran as good as its original is well... a different story.
    At some stage people started using it wrong and so port began to mean any version of a game not on the system it was first made for, whether it was coded from scratch or not.

    • @SonicSP
      @SonicSP 6 років тому

      Craig Brainimpact So was there a term for the game if it was recorded from scratch and not using the original assets?

    • @brainimp
      @brainimp 6 років тому

      It was still being used correctly 10-15 years ago, then when old games started getting remade for smartphones It started getting used wrong by all these new tech sites that sprung up around the same time as touchscreen phones took off, developers used to go out of their way to make it known if it was no port and they had coded it from scratch, but then online PR people took over that had no clue so it just stopped getting corrected.

    It's weird that genital-themed monsters were the norm in that era, like in Contra and R-type, when video games were still seen as kids stuff.

    • @HaydenX
      @HaydenX 4 роки тому +1

      Well...giving birth is a kind of part body celebration, part body horror...one expressed well in Giger's works. And, as a whole, the "think-of-the-children" parents out there are more willing to tolerate sexual/bodily themes in the context of the life cycle and/or marriage (you'd be surprised at the number of sex-toy/lingerie shop ads there are in Utah...but they are all ads aimed at married couples). So...given the, admittedly horrifying, "birth" themes with Alien in the chest-bursters, and the normalization of said imagery with the ubiquity of the first 2 Alien movies as "instant classics", I don't think most parents noticed...or just assumed that little kids wouldn't get it anyway. I've been around a lot of these people throughout much of my life, and they seem to care a lot more about words than imagery...especially imagery that could be interpreted in multiple ways.

    I loved Alien Storm. I remember to have seen Golden Axe in the rare Arcades i had around where i lived. Got Golden Axe for the Genesis/Mega Drive ... and when i seen Alien Storm i got it right away. Testers in magazines gave it 74% ... but for me it was as good as Golden Axe ... it's just different, more variety. Yes only one real Boss the last one being a Shooting Gallery ... but i liked that the game is so varied in what you do. Each Alien type you had to fight differently.
    Still love it. It's sad that they (Sega) not make any more Golden Axe, Streets of Rage(Bare Knuckle), Alien Storm, or Shinobi games.
    And yeah i know Streets of Rage 4 came out not long ago ... but somehow i feel like there is something missing in there. Streets of Rage 4 feels like they ignored Streets of Rage 3, no Running or Rolling ... or that Bar that let you use the Special without HP loss once a certain time. Also ... it's quite short too.

    I played the hell out of Alien Storm here in the states when it came out in the arcade near my home. Funny enough, even though I own a Sega Genesis, as it's called here, I never played the ported version. Alien Syndrome I played quite a lot on the Sega Master System I had. Loads of fun from both games. Either would easily make for an epic movie if done right.

    • @DoppelgangerShockwave
      @DoppelgangerShockwave 6 років тому

      No, not really the same thing. Yes, these games were inspired by Aliens, much more so than Alien, but they're different enough from Aliens to where you could do a movie where numerous groups of Aliens have taken over the planet, and now there's a war going on where the humans are fighting back. Cause that's more what Alien Syndrome and Alien Storm are like. You get a wide array of Aliens which you fight back against in both games, where Aliens is about one species.

    What really pissed me off about Alien Storm MD was that in 2P Arcade mode, you share continues. So if your partner dies, continues for both go down by one. You can be in a situation where 2P fucks you up and yet you get game over before them, while they play a little bit longer.

    ALL home computer versions use a push scroll not just the C64, it is what makes the Amiga version's identical graphics of the ST a shit sprinkle on a shit cake that is non centrally held character while you scroll the screen as the arcade does. The only version worth playing that isn't via MAME is the x68000 because it is the only faithful version that keeps that control method for when the screen scrolls.

  • @realmchat6665

    Yay, you got around to Alien Syndrome. For some reason it isn't remembered as the great game that it is. It was the first game that I remember that had boss battles, and as such you almost needed a second player for those parts. I used to camp the machine at the arcade, asking people random people who approached the game to play coop.

    a very good overview of two games that i have a soft spot for~ however, i am curious about the bit about the number of credits for the mega drive port of alien storm- which version did you play that has so many? i've only ever known the game to give 3 credits shared between players regardless of region, and while there is an option to increase that amount, it's only adjustable via a code (tcrf.net/Alien_Storm_(Genesis) )
    incidentally, the steam and wii virtual console versions of alien storm make a tiny change- the red cross on the health kit was changed to an 'H' instead

    Did I understand correctly? The NES(!!!) port? A SEGA(!!!!) game got ported to a NINTENDO(!!!!) system??? Now HOW the hell was that possible back when SEGA was still in the hardware business? Imagine, for a moment, Gears of War on the Playstation. Odd, right? I really find that quite fascinating - how this port of Alien Syndrome was possible might even be a more interesting story than the game itself.

    • @Horzuhammer
      @Horzuhammer 6 років тому

      It's not the only Sega game on the Nes. There are also ports of Fantasy Zone, After Burner, Shinobi, Space Harrier and Altered Beast on the Nes/Famicom. Tengen released some of 'em in the west.

  • @Guernicaman
    @Guernicaman 6 років тому

    Why hasn't SEGA brought these two arcade games to modern consoles? It's not like they have to be recoded due to licensed assets & stuff (like Shinobi, Altered Beast or Golden Axe). Maybe a 3 or 5 game arcade pack, w/Alien Syndrome, Alien Storm, Quartet, Space Harrier & Fantasy Zone. Perhaps they could even include the console versions as hidden unlockable extras. Come on, SEGA! Stop slacking off!
