Joe and Mac Returns has been available on the Switch e-shop thanks to Hamster for around a year and it's a lot of fun. There's also Zupapa on there which is very similar... Still waiting and hoping for Snow Bros.
@Lassi Kinnunen Why would I post that on a friends video? No, if you followed me on Twitter, you'd know nothing was ever faked, I lied about lying to Watchmojo to totally fuck with them.
When I first discovered UA-cam, I had a lot of fun watching play throughs of Muscle Bomber 2: The Body Explosion. It's in the same world of Street Fighter, and rough drafts of Blanka and Zangief are in the cast. It also introduces the inspiration for Sakura. Several Street Fighters appear in the background. I do wish that with all the wrestling elements they added to the gameplay, and the high and low striking mechanics that we had seen actual street fighters playable. Just throw in Zanghief, E Honda and Blanka and you've got it up to the same number of roster as Super Street fighter two turbo, also released that year.
I remember when we got the Deco156 CPU decrypted. At the time Osman was the curiosity and one of the main reasons I was researching it, but then once we had it all figured out there were so many great surprises too, games that were much better than I was expecting, with the Joe and Mac sequel being one of them. Data East and Mitchell put that little ARM chip to good use with the likes of Charlie Ninja, Night Slashers and even the SF2 'rip-off' Fighters History. Good memories, even if I never saw any of these back in the arcades.
Tetsuo Hara also did the art/design for the original Slammasters, which is why most folks think it has yet to be re-released in any format (especially since Capcom seemed ready to drop anything from the SNES and Genesis on Virtual Console). But yeah, Ring of Destruction is just ok, since they made it more of a traditional fighter. Muscle Bomber Duo, the Street Fighter II': Turbo to Slammasters' Street Fighter II, is my favorite of the three Slammasters games.
Just watched a couple of your vids and had to subscribe. I will forgive you for playing my nostalgia like a violin - you clearly have great passion and knowledge on the subject of retro games. Also the vid titles and approaches are obviously considered and not just thrown together on a whim. Keep up the good work 👍 buy for now!
played rastan 3 and robocop2 on mame. Considering how much time i spent in arcades on holiday and in town and fairs im suprised I never saw these. Nice video. Old arcade games and 80s movies make me so nostalgic.
Glad to see some love being given to Warrior Blade. It's been one of my favorite arcade beat em ups for years. Doesn't get nearly the attention it deserves. I'm still holding out hope for it to get some kind of modern re-release so more people can properly discover it. Also regarding Rastan II, I remember loving it as a kid, but over the years I forgot what it was called. Several years later, around 2002 I think, I looked it up and played it again, and I had what might have been my first ever "Oh no this thing I liked as a kid is actually BAD" moment.
Yeah as far as I know Warrior Blade is only on the Japanese PS2 collection Taito Memories II Gekan. Very expensive disc nowerdays, the game definitly should have a wider release!
Rastan is a hard game - and because it was doing some new stuff, some of it doesn't work. In my mind, overshadowed by the better (though still mediocre) Black Tiger.
If I ever got a cab, it would be a Robocop 2 cab. I would feed the data east machine all my money as a kid. They had one at my local swimming pool in Romsey. I wish I could track it down but it's probably been crushed in a landfill =,(
I know the very arcade your talking about when you mentioned playing Pang 3 in Benidorm. My friend was with me and he never even heard of Pang and was absolutely hooked in it when he played along with myself.
I also, fondly remember and dearly miss, playing Joe and Mac with friends when I was younger. The nostalgia those little cavemen exude. There is absolutely something our current society is lacking, where we don't get to enjoy experiences like this on the regular.
I remember trying Bombjack Twin on MAME, and it's hard, a lot harder than the original and certainly made to steal quarters, you quickly get a lot of fast enemies that are hard to avoid. Not bad but i actually think the game would benefit from being a bit easier.
This got me thinking, what about good arcade like games that are recent? Beat'em ups, shooters or games based on scoring that are made after...say 2010, because, at the very least, the score centric games seem to be mostly gone nowadays and are relegated to mobiles or small free games. At most i know of Mindware, which made the awesome Heiankyo Alien 3671 game that is sold on Steam and actually got popular enough to be turned into an arcade cabinet in Japan, and some games like Space Mouse which i find very fun. I guess it's really just a thing of the past sadly, it's why Housemarque stopped making arcade games even after the great Nex Machina game.
these are some good choices. Robocop 2 is a pretty odd game, really, there's not many scrolling brawler-style games that have such a focus on gunplay (although there is NARC of course and Konami's Bucky O'Hare). i will say i had fun playing Ring of Destruction with a friend- it goes at a right clip, close to the speed of Super Turbo, but has its own foibles like the grapple system that give it is own feel. i understand your focus here is on contemporary home ports, but it may be worth knowing three of these did get home emulations much, much later- obviously Spy Hunter II is in a few of those Midway collections, but also Warrior Blade was released on the PS2 as part of Taito Memories II Gekan (Japan-only) and Joe & Mac Returns is on the Switch, of all things, as part of a line of Data East rereleases by Flying Tiger Entertainment and Johnny Turbo (although i'm unsure how good the emulation is there).
I think if you do another one of these, you should give Planet Harriers a look! It’s a 3D sequel to Space Harrier that was going to get a Dreamcast or GameCube port, but it never got either, which is a shame because it’s pretty fun
Technically, Joust II did get a home release eventually in the first Midway Arcade Treasures compilation though that was over a decade and a half after it hit arcades.
“Operation Wolf 3” reminds me of Eugene Jarvis’ “Target Terror.” I’m surprised Hamster hasn’t ported “Warrior Blade” home as part of its Arcade Archives series. They’ve already done one ultrawide Taito game in the form of “Ninjawarriors.”
Joe and Mac Returns is the final game in Data East Bubble Bobble clones series with the ones before it Begin Tumble Pop and Diet Go Go all have different mechanics but play similar and all have the same guy as the Final Boss. You can also buy it on the Switch and on some Official Plug and Play systems with Data east games included.
As a fellow fan of Sly Spy, I half expected you to cover the similar Crime City, the on foot side scrolling sequel to Chase HQ. And so there is the gentle nudge for your follow up.

As, as a Canadian bastard, I was unaware of quite a few of your releases. Really enjoy channels like Kim who share what was out there. Was a fascinating era for gaming.
Robocop 1 and 2 are both different and Amazing games!! I used to end Robocop 1 with 1 coin.. so please do not define it a coin grabber.. it was a memory learn pattern type game not a coin grabber. It did not cheat as many other games!! Loved even Rastan 2 it was a little bit choppy compared to golden axe 2 revenge of death adder.. but still amazing!! Joe and Mac 2 for me was quite a disappointment on the arcades.. but all in all it was not a bad game at all.. I totally agree with you on this one! Good video! Keep up the good work!
Robocop 2 should have been released on the Sega Genesis, Sega CD, and Snes...but nooooo! The same can be said for the third Rastan game. I would have loved to see a full conversion for either the PlayStation or Sega Saturn again, they failed us. The rest of the games weren't my cup of Joe. Hey, I'm an American, what do you want?! Okay, I'll meet you halfway...iced tea. ;) Excellent video as always, you have my eternal gratitude for showing me the Rastan beat em' up. I wonder if I can find the actual coin-op for our home arcade? We currently have 8 stand up coin-op machines in our living room and I want more! All of our games are from the 1990's golden age of arcade bliss. I was around for the end of the 1980's but I was far too young. I didn't really get into them until the very tail end of 1987 and even then I couldn't reach the controls without a barstool.
It doesn't really fit the topic 100%, but the two Mega Man arcade-only games sure are interesting. Like a combination between a fighting game and a platforming boss rush. They contain some surprisingly interesting story bits and cameos for the big fans of the series out there like me.

Hey Kim, sorry for door-stopping you on the tube last week. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to say hello (I was heading back to Ireland that day). Sorry for mumbling incomprehensibly - I didn't know what to say apart from Hi. Great video, by the way!!
Great video as usual. Didn't expect to see Pang show up at the end. If you're hankering for a decentish Pang game other than the arcade ones, I rather liked the 2016 Pang Adventures on Steam as well. Except maybe it got way too hard with the time limit and some of the added gimmicks like clouds really just make some levels a slog. Certainly worth it on a sale.
Awww thanx Kim you legend. Just was reading up on the intensely sad "bye r9k" lad whilst doing the dishes....much needed mood lift. Thanx lovey... you are the best my deary.
Yeah. I didn't know if that game was any good when I saw it in the eshop because they abandoned the side scrolling aspect. But if it's actually fun then I might pick it up, it's very cheap. And it looks amazing. And then for the sidescrolling they've got the SNES one in the SNES app
Huh. Well, it is an interesting selection, to be sure, and yup, many of them are obscure... Somewhat surprised Planet Harriers wasn't in there though. Definitely arcade only, didn't do well due to the waning arcade scene, and... Well, it's got multiple characters, and they're interestingly designed (:P)
Great video, I'm defo going to check out that Robocop 2, it looks awesome. 1 question though, wasn't Spy Hunter 2 released on the micros? I vaugely remember being depressed playing it on my Speccy, or maybe it was in the arcades. I just recall being sad.
Spy Hunter 2 looks truly awful! The original arcade game was literally everywhere for years in UK arcades back in the day, good for me as I bloody loved that game haha!
@Dave Kennedy : _Spy Hunter II_ [1987; Bally/Midway] does look like crap, but it plays even worse! @@codeoptimizationware2803 thanks for the info! I assumed the footage shown of Spy Hunter 2 was a very bad home computer port until I saw the 'insert coin' flash up haha! I'm glad that I only have (great) memories of playing the original.
If Bally Midway had the same graphics hardware as Sega did with OutRun, it could have been okay, but... they didn't. RoadBlasters feels like the kind of Spy Hunter sequel Midway WANTED to make, but couldn't pull it off.
@@jessragan6714 : _RoadBlasters_ [1987] wasn't made by Bally/Midway nor Sega but by Atari. And yes it IS a much better game in every way than _Spy Hunter II_ , but _Spy Hunter_ tops them all hehehehehe
Spy Hunter II looks like those cheaply-made browser games from the early 2000s whose actual purpose was as bait to get you to download "dialers" connecting you to overseas telecoms who charge exorbitant long distance rates back in the days when many people still connected to the Internet via dial-up.
Have to say I remember Robocop2 arcade being poorly received compared to the original arcade, due to 'chubby' RoboCop graphics and a fiddly control system. But then I always used to get killed by the first chainsaw boss in Robo2, as opposed to get to the OCP offices on a quarter in the original game.
Good selection. Still prefer the first robocop and caveman ninja, as the sequels are less original and generic. Operation wolf has a even more obscure sequel called operation tiger, that although is nothing special it is better than operation wolf 3.There are a lot of obscure arcade sequels that could make the list like lode runner dig from psycho
Kim I agree with Bombjack on the speccy being the best, what I expected was Bombjack II on the speccy being shown, wow, imagine me buying the the BJ1 and 2 on a tape combo when I already had BJ1! Very disappointing!
Spy Hunter II is on midway arcade treasure II for gc,xbox and ps2.All in all id definitely agree a waste of a sequel on midway part.I know id rather play sunsoft, super spy hunter for nes instead of part II.
Ive been wondering for months now, what is that intro sound from? i mean those first 14 seconds, i recognize it from something i heard years ago! maybe some educational video or something? i cant remember
I remember 10 pence for some older games in the late 80s but most were twenty and by the time games like Mortal Kombat were released it was fifty pence per credit.
Mighty Pang had an official PSP release, which might mean it's disqualified from your video. Good list though, I lost a fair amount of pocket money to Robocop 2 back in the day!
Operation Wolf 3 looks like the kind of crap that would look at home on the Cdi or 3DO (The 3DO did have some good games, but alot of crap. The cdi just had an awful lot of crap)
The Japanese version of Robocop 2 had a different first level, that's a recap of the ending of Robocop 1, fighting ED-209, then rescuing the old man.

Fixed. UA-cam is behaving badly.
Arcade Sequels Final ?
I absolutely love that intro.
The Lord is calling home the articulate Kim.
Spy Hunter 2: Subsistance.
Can't believe you didn't mention that Robocop 2 was 2 player coop, that's a pretty obscure and exclusive thing to any Robocop game.
Gonna check these out, I thought the Joe & Mac game looked awesome
Fantastic intro!
"Bye for now" -eric the actor
The dying alone comment got me 😢
Kim I agree with Bombjack on the speccy being the best, what I expected was Bombjack II on the speccy being shown, wow, imagine me buying the the BJ1 and 2 on a tape combo when I already had BJ1! Very disappointing!
Spy Hunter II is on midway arcade treasure II for gc,xbox and ps2.All in all id definitely agree a waste of a sequel on midway part.I know id rather play sunsoft, super spy hunter for nes instead of part II.
The Ocean RoboCop was the original, the arcade is a port!
Hmm I remember this coming out on the C64 after the arcade version. But maybe there's an earlier one?
Daytona USA 2 should be in a sequel. Amazing game
No Dynamite Deka EX Asian Dynamite? You have to cover that next time.
Not a sequel but an arcade only spinoff i'm very fond of: Nintendo's Arm Wrestling.
Finally Pang gets the credit it deserves!!!
the car in spy hunter 2 sounds like a chainsaw.
Ive been wondering for months now, what is that intro sound from? i mean those first 14 seconds, i recognize it from something i heard years ago! maybe some educational video or something? i cant remember
10p? I remember 20p at the funfair when I was a kid, then 30p, then 50p by the mid 90's.
You sure about that? I couldn't find it on google. Only the Pang collection and on Capcom Puzzle World.
I guess you'll be saving Haunted Castle for the sequel, then...
Operation Wolf 3 looks like the kind of crap that would look at home on the Cdi or 3DO (The 3DO did have some good games, but alot of crap. The cdi just had an awful lot of crap)
the people who made OW3 should join the hostages.
What was the car game at the start please
