@@Matthiascosta2006 I stealth camped on the regular (aka was homeless) on and off for a total of 14 years of the past four decades. In a good situation now. That welcome sign (the one Steve camped behind) was pretty controversial at the time it was built. Some people felt it was an extravagant expense for a town that has a lot of pressing problems to take care of. Of course, Nanaimo gonna Nanaimo so the flashy sign got built, Nanaimo got to pretend it was a Big Boy City and now, after all these years, it looks like it was all worth it for the Steve Wallis stealth camp!
Been going through a hard time lately, but your videos are keeping my spirits up and making me smile! Thanks for the content. Its awesome to see someone who breaks the rules in the most polite and acceptable way lol
Been watching a few episodes man. I guess I started stealth camping a few years after I started bike tripping. At first it was just regular campgrounds and provincial parks but then, by about 1977 I started venturing into random woods. Almost 50 years later I'd say I'm a seasoned expert. I watch your dinner making scenes with great fondness for years of amazing feasts in secret places. I love the coffee in the morning even more than dinner. One inspiration to stealth camping by bicycle was the book, Bike Tripping, by a Cuthbertson, out of ten-speed press, which went on to be a pretty hip publisher. He suggested camping at cemeteries. Nobody writes youth literature like that anymore. So I've become a bit of an expert in cemetery camping. Often, just immediately behind a cemetery there's a fence, a tree line, maybe some rocks. Usually great neutral ground where nobody goes. I like communication towers also. There's usually a fence around them so you go far side of the fence. Often handy bush and trees, and often a fence post to string the hammock. Love railroad sides, little low spots beside the tracks, often again with a fence. I have had a whole closed campground on Lake Superior all to myself. I've camouflaged myself as wrapped firewood beside a park building. I've hidden in the groupings of landscaped conifers at tourist information centres in Quebec. Countless picnic shelters, hydro properties, behind dumpsters at industrial parks, liminal shrubland in parks, on gas station properties, beside monuments, like the Terry Fox monument in Thunder Bay. That night was special. East of Sudbury we slept in Mennonite built sheds that were arranged for sale in a large grouping. My brother took one shack and I took another, bike and everything. I love stealth camping. It's a real rush. And it makes bike tripping super cheap, when you consider that it basically reduces the cost of living on the road, getting in great shape and losing weight and seeing beautiful parts of the world down to groceries and booze while on the road. Without the cost of accommodation, a cyclist on the road can live on $20 per day, assuming you're carrying staples like coffee, oats, dry soup mix, etc on your bike. You can lounge at restaurant breakfasts, buy fresh fruit for lunch and a couple cans of beer for supper. Well, maybe $30 per day. It depends. But it's definitely the cheapest way to go free for a while. I've done months on the road many times, crossed Canada many times. It's a subculture of life that I love and know and I know that there are many out there who adventure like this. Onward, comrades!
“I just don’t know how I would explain walking into the woods with a rice cooker.” You’re the best Steve and I have a difficult time imagining anyone getting really worked up about you taking a snooze behind the Nanaimo sign. But I guess you just never know. Thanks for once again giving me something to chuckle about and helping to calm my world-weary nerves. As many before me have already said, this is by far the best channel on UA-cam!
Just went camping last night for the first time in years. Even though it was in my backyard, it was so much fun. Can’t wait to go hiking with my gear. Thanks for the inspiration Steve! New summer hobby! (Along with kayaking)
@ Kevin Lackey My ex GF got me into kayaking although I haven't been for awhile. One place for pretty serene water is out nearby my area @ a place called Lake Tulley in Royalton MA.. It has islands you can pull up on & explore which's fun; just if you go when it's really warm, the tallest peaked one be careful exploring the top of! There's biting ants up there which my ex & I while still dating encountered. She lost a pair of ray bans up there & the still to this day going joke is how the ants are using them for solar tech.
Steve got me inspired to pick camping back up after 25 years, and so far I've been on two camping trips, and have two more coming up in the next few weeks/months. But I definitely want to pull a backyard camp sometime soon! It sounds like it would make you feel like a kid again!

I’ve never been stealth camping. After watching Steve for so long, I find myself looking for stealth camping spots while I’m driving. Always love the videos Steve!
I can tell you that there is something really awesome about either grabbing a backpack and hiking or cycling and not having any idea where you are gonna sleep. Stealth camping is such a cool idea for a personal mini adventure.
Steve cooks better behind a sign with a nearly exploding camp stove than I do in a full kitchen.... squeezing lemons, making a roux. Apparently I need more camping to improve my culinary skills.
Just a small tip. In pretty much any bag I have (hiking, work, overnight) I like to keep a few salt, pepper, sugar, & single serving tea packets from fast food joints in a small ziploc for occasions like that. Weighs next to nothing and doesn't take up any appreciable space. Everything in the baggie does end up smelling like pepper but so far has never affected the taste.
Hey Steve, I love your adventures! Just watched this vid... and I have commentary... My first reaction is, I am no Canadian but I live close to the border and I'm pretty good at getting out of trouble. Here are some suggestions based on strategic planning: When walking through the woods with a high end camera and a comfy chair, think, "I want to get some great photos of birds." Similarly, camping behind a road sign and even cooking dinner there, have a reason... such as, set up a slow exposure of the road. Maybe you want to get an all-night traffic photo but don't want to leave your equipment out there alone. If neighbors actually approach you, be honest within the motto of one controversial American arts collective; "Trust me. I'm an artist." If you believe you need to be there, in my experience, others will be less likely to question your motives.
Good idea, but I honestly think the way Steve comes across, if he actually did get busted, with nerves and how suspicious he acts, not to mention, being a law-abiding citizen; I think the truth would come out. haha
The cracking of the beer can is the best part of his videos. I've been to Victoria several times. It's worth the ride over, on the Canadian ferry, just to see it. What a lucky guy to have the natural beauty so close.
Steve, I grew up in Cold Lake, moved to Los Angeles when I was 13 and have lived in the US ever since (I’m 43 now.) I just wanted to say that I watch a lot of UA-cam - from tech stuff to music stuff to Star Wars stuff - but yours is my favorite channel. The areas you camp in, the sounds of the birds and the white birch trees, and your accent take me right back to my childhood when I’d build forts out in the woods of Cold Lake. You’re good folk, and I truly get excited when I see a new video of yours posted. Thanks for sharing your adventures 🇨🇦
@@campingwithsteve should do a stealth camp at one of the ferry terminals in your car like you did at the Airport that one time. Make sure the little notch on the butane canister is lined up properly and not leaking before ignition. I’ve been using those types of stoves for 15 years or more and never had an issue. Stay safe Steve.
untrue call: i was a vagrant for years &'ve done lots more stealth camping on & off the freights, plus lotsa urban stealthing, &'ve never had a stove blow on me because of never having used a stove but always found a place to cook on a fire or just made sandwiches. 'course, i've had a few campfires go into the "uh-oh!" stage, thankfully never beyond ability to get control over...
Never had a blowout - that would be hard to achieve with unpressurized fuel... A toppled alcohol stove makes for an excellent way to wake you up in the morning, though. Beats any amount of caffeine for sure!

Your wife was spot on when she discovered your recent stealth place! We loved it! You did a great job getting there, setting up, and just enjoying it all:)
Steve and I have a lot in common, I'm also much more comfortable with minor bylaw infractions as opposed to cutting open electrical panels to power my rice cooker.
Pretty cool spot. It actually brings back memories of 2017, when I camped really close to that spot, just off the ramp there. It was part of my across Canada bicycle tour that had me stealth camping a lot.

He camps there and begins a new life, meeting other characters who were brought, there for one reason or another.

Ah man that stinks, praying for a speedy recovery, there are some great roads I'm Kentucky, stay safe.
The information that u are a Marine Veteran is not important in any way but i wish u a speedy recovery sir :)
Awesome episode! The stove malfunction, "don't mind about that" and "that looks a little more reasonable" combo had me belly laughing. Steve, your "always chill" attitude, no matter the situation, is what draws me to these videos.
That stove bit was truly funny
I laughed out loud and was still laughing when he dropped the broccoli picked it up *shook it off* and tossed it in the pot. That started up a whole 'nother round of laughter. Love Steve's channel!
Same man. He would have dropped a few notches if he threw those away.
Classic :)
"now you're camping with Steve"
* portable stove literally catches on fire *
* throws stove onto ground *
“okay, don’t mind about that”
lmao I love him
I will never look at that NANAIMO sign the same way 😂 Thanks, Steve! You always know how to make a day brighter!
T least they put the graffiti on the back side

Steve I really hate laughing at people's misfortune, but that moment with the butane stove gave me a good chuckle!
Steve, have you thought about turning the bivy rainfly inside out? the gray with shadows may look closer to the concrete and the waterproofing should work just as well
Steve is making better meals behind a sign than I am on a Friday night at home ahah
Me too. I ate a can of pinto beans while watching him talking about making a roux behind a sign.
He is truly an inspiration
he has honestly inspired me to make better food at home bc i literally just think "if steve can make this while camping... i can make it at home.
Thanks for all the videos Steve. I'm just a humble subscriber going through a rough patch, and your videos shed just enough light to help me know things will work out! Keep hunkerin'.
Thanks so much, I really hope your rough patch smooths out soon. Cheers!

I stealth camped on the regular (aka was homeless) on and off for a total of 14 years of the past four decades.
In a good situation now.
Hang in there, you'll find your good spot soon.
By the way, I still stealth camp.
It's just for fun and peace of mind these days. Since I can bail if ever I choose to, it's MUCH more enjoyable now.
Cheers and ATB!
Awh! wishing you well! It will get better Sara
If God brought you to it, He'll get you through it! Keep your head up!

Dam I gotta get myself a bike
Wow
“I just don’t know how I would explain walking into the woods with a rice cooker.” You’re the best Steve and I have a difficult time imagining anyone getting really worked up about you taking a snooze behind the Nanaimo sign. But I guess you just never know. Thanks for once again giving me something to chuckle about and helping to calm my world-weary nerves. As many before me have already said, this is by far the best channel on UA-cam!
The real question is why he would have thought to bring a rice cooker for stealth camping in the first place!
That flame up on the cooker almost took Steve out!! He is a trooper for sure!! The behind the signs stealth vids are awesome!!
Just went camping last night for the first time in years. Even though it was in my backyard, it was so much fun. Can’t wait to go hiking with my gear. Thanks for the inspiration Steve! New summer hobby! (Along with kayaking)
@ Kevin Lackey
My ex GF got me into kayaking although I haven't been for awhile.

@@eventsmorewithchrisg I live in Virginia. ‘Not too far. Sounds like an awesome place!
Yep - started rebuilding my camping gear since I started watching Steve.
I need a power pack to power my in-tent CPAP gear - can’t sleep without it…
Steve got me inspired to pick camping back up after 25 years, and so far I've been on two camping trips, and have two more coming up in the next few weeks/months. But I definitely want to pull a backyard camp sometime soon! It sounds like it would make you feel like a kid again!

Would love a watch mojo video of the top 10 signs to stealth behind 🤣
I’ve never been stealth camping. After watching Steve for so long, I find myself looking for stealth camping spots while I’m driving. Always love the videos Steve!
Glad to hear that I'm not the only one
I also do that.
Especially the medians of highways that are wooded.
@HKJ Gordon Ramsay makes excellent grilled cheese sandwiches over and open fire as well.
The stove lighting was very stealthy :)
Secondary tip. The vinegar packets usually leak after a while and ketchup tends to get squashed so they make a poor addition, lol.
Empty chap stick tubes!
Promethus design werx
Makes these tough silicone jars that don't leak!
Oh, that's brilliant! thanks for the idea! I'm going to put that in my list of excuses.
Even better is that Steve has "collaborated" with other artists who do cool camera stuff... in caves.
Good idea, but I honestly think the way Steve comes across, if he actually did get busted, with nerves and how suspicious he acts, not to mention, being a law-abiding citizen; I think the truth would come out. haha
"Right on ... rice cooker." Another priceless moment, Steve! Thanks to you and Beautiful Wife for always thinking of us.
Yes been waiting for another stealth Camp behind a sign, we need more like this
Long Overdue!
I have been searching for one since I did the last one! They're few and far between, but I've always got my eyes peeled for a good sign.
@@campingwithsteve should do a stealth camp at one of the ferry terminals in your car like you did at the Airport that one time. Parking is controlled by Robbins not BC Ferries but I don't think they patrol overnight. We have a park across the street from us I could just pic Steve stealth camping there on the outskirts of Victoria.
@@campingwithsteve If you find the perfect sign would you consider it a sign from the heavens?
@@campingwithsteve I still think the glade between the Canadian Tire and the highway is better.
This was completely excellent. Rain makes camping real.
Rain on a tent, one of my most favourite sounds.
@@worstuserever one of my most disliked sounds… rain on the west coast. Way too often !
Make sure the little notch on the butane canister is lined up properly and not leaking before ignition. I’ve been using those types of stoves for 15 years or more and never had an issue. Stay safe Steve.
Ah, the stove blowout. Anyone who says they've never had that happen to them hasn't spent enough time camping. Great video, as always.
untrue call: i was a vagrant for years &'ve done lots more stealth camping on & off the freights, plus lotsa urban stealthing, &'ve never had a stove blow on me because of never having used a stove but always found a place to cook on a fire or just made sandwiches.
I drive past that sign a couple times a week. If you knew a little more about Nanaimo you would realize it’s quite a stealth camping town. I’m surprised you didn’t come back to someone in your tent. Favourite episode, thank you for bringing your show to our town.
If he came back to find someone in his spot, I'd say it's a two-fer-one roadside special episode. Lol
That's pretty cool 👍

I've watched every single episode and now rewatching them all again. You're an absolute legend Steve!
The best part of that site is how clean it looked. It was a great place, secluded, but open to air. Your beautiful wife has a good eye.
Pretty cool spot. It actually brings back memories of 2017, when I camped really close to that spot, just off the ramp there. It was part of my across Canada bicycle tour that had me stealth camping a lot.
Where’s Wallis is the perfect name for this channel! Love this week’s stealth camp! Thank you for sharing! Made my week!

It's rare to come across the elusive Steve, and it's a real treat to spot him toting his mythical rice cooker. Great stuff Steve.
The last bit about the couple watching you stumble out of woods with a backpack and a pot of leftovers had me 😂😂😂 Great video as always Steve!!
Nobody wants a serial camper around, I guess
It's the pot of leftovers that is suspicious. 😱
I'll bet they would recognize you, Steve if they got a closer look and would offer you breakfast! ❤ Do you think so?
At 8:36 I found a classic type of "Steve-ism: "I just don't know how I would explain walking into the woods with a rice cooker." 😂
I’m dying at the idea of Beautiful Wife wanting some time to herself and trawling the highway for signs for you to sleep behind 💀💀💀
Edited: this didn’t age great 😬
I hope anyone reading this knows it was a joke (made before her passing) and that Steve & his wife were obviously deeply in love. Beautiful Wife was a loving soul who brightened her family & friends’ lives and cared for those who society often turns a blind eye to. RIP, Beautiful Wife.

Steve you may enjoy the book Concrete Island by JG Ballard. It’s a little dark but very entertaining. A man gets in a car accident which sends him and his vehicle down off the interstate into a space enclosed by steep embankments and retaining walls, no exit. He camps there and begins a new life, meeting other characters who were brought, there for one reason or another.
Your camping escapades, so near to the normal hum drum of life but entirely concealed, just made me think about it.
“It’s not large, but it is stealthy.”

This video was endearing to me; spent some amazing time with my grandfather fishing in Nanaimo as a young kid; good to see the place again! Great video Steve!
As someone who has made many boundary waters trips I have come to be fascinated by your adventures. I have slept in a hammock, back packing tent, and have been run out of a campsite by a bear. I even spent a night under an overturned canoe one time. Age and some health issues have slowed me down a bit, so your videos have become bright spots in my life. Thanks and keep them coming Denny V
