As much as I love the castlevania animated series yeah I really would say what have used this version of Hector than the one that showed hes all right but still we've love to seem to do something bad a** like he doesn't the game
...He was still early on. His appearance in the game is years after he left Dracula's service. Netflix Hector got his shit together after everything that happened.
@@TimedRevolverThat’s both true and untrue. Curse of Darkness does show Hector 3 years after leaving Dracula’s service. However, the Canon manga shows Hector IMMEDIATELY AFTER he had left Dracula’s service. Hector was always reserved but was still the strongest Devil Forgemaster between him and Isaac. The reason WHY Hector left Dracula’s service was because he didn’t agree to the killing of humanity, as opposed to in the show where he was just dragged around like a lost puppy. Canonical Hector was sent out (with a legion of demons) to assassinate Trevor Belmont because (despite not being in Wallachia at the time), Dracula/Mathias still felt his presence. So, while Hector was out, he killed his Legion of Demons and ended up fleeing. Hector killing the army of demons is seen right at the beginning of Curse of Darkness since it’s the opening sequence. The Curse of Darkness manga takes place during the events of Dracula’s Curse (which is when Hector ran off) and leads up to right before Hector tracks Isaac down at the beginning of the game. Plus, we also see that Hector got a werewolf, who was going to kill and eat Hector’s future wife (Rosaly), to beg for its life before he killed it. So this doesn’t have anything to do with “He was still early on…” Warren Ellis willingly and knowingly made Hector into a punching bag, for two reasons. He knew Hector was one of Adi Shankars favorite characters (alongside Alucard hence the whole…Season 3 thing with him), which is important because during the writing he (Ellis) and Adi had a falling out, and two he enjoyed listening to Hector’s voice actor in pain (he said as much in one of the interviews that he was in).
One of the biggest problems with the Castlevania games during the IGA era is that Konami never gave him that large of a budget to develop the games, that's why most of the games where GBA and DS games with recycled assists and the 3D games had the most dull and lifeless environments. Both Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness had a shoestring budget and while IGA was good at stretching that budget as far as he can, there's only so much you can do in terms of presentation and story telling with so little to work with. I believe that if IGA was given a far bigger budget all of Curse of Darkness' short coming would easily be ironed out and we would have a masterpiece rivaling Symphony of the Night and Aria of Sorrow.
The problem is that guys like you think Symphony of the Night and Aria of Sorrow are masterpieces. Symphony of the Night was the beginning of the end for the series because once you throw level design out the window and make it all about fighting the same enemies over and over again in mostly flat, featureless hallways and rooms, you've killed the perfect balance of action and platforming Castlevania was always known for. Transfer that into 3D space and you have a poor man's Devil May Cry knock-off.
There is no way this game had a shoestring budget. The environments are dull, but other than that the presentation is fantastic. It is easy to tell that they spent a lot of money on the cutscenes alone.
Both Castlevania games on PS2 were good. No matter what others say. This games should have been in the Classic catalog. I do not want 2D Castlevania. I want 3D now. And I do not count the Lords of Shadow BS series. These games were nah. Story was stupid. That is why if you want new games, make a remake not re-imagining. Remake the series in 3D for current gen KONAMI for FUCK sakes.
Please listen also to "Lament of Innocense", which to me has the superior OST of the 3D Castlevanias. Ultimately both have the most underappreciated osts in videogame existance.
"Abandoned Castle" is perhaps the best song in the entire franchise. I think it represents all those classic banger songs that CV has when you start in the early stages, representing the feeling of revenge that each of those games possesses. CV CoD OST for me is the best CV OST, superior to the SOTN OST imo.
@@Fco2k7 Yeah, it is such a weird feeling to know that these "shunned by society" 3D Castlevanias probably have tracks that would bring 2D fans to tears on their knees. All in all it is the series' composer Michiru Yamane who we should thank from our hearts. Beautiful tracks like "Abandoned Castle" is (luckily) just one of hundreds of 10/10 tracks in the series. I personally cannot decide which track is my favorite...maybe I could start by listing my Top 20 favorite songs.
Yeah honestly so much of the story in the manga gives this game much needed context with lore & conflict between Draculas forces being really entertaining imo, especially with Hector and Isaac‘s rivalry during the events of Castlevania 3. Really wish a lot of that content was introduced naturally in the game rather than having to read elsewhere for the full enjoyment of the story. It’s worth noting that in Japan there was ANOTHER manga illustrated by Ayami Kojima called "Prelude to Revenge", which was a pre order bonus that basically acted as a short abridged version of the two Curse of Darkness volumes. It’s REALLY cool with amazing art, definitely worth checking out for hardcore fans! Another excellent video Nyarly!
I think trying to attempt to put so much story into the game was too big a risk, as it would have been criticized for breaking up the pace. Devil May Cry survived having a shoddy story as the action made it irrelevant. The supplementary material increased the popularity, though I don't think it translated to the game sales too much.
@@BreadLordDormammu Castlevania games have always been pretty light storywise, maybe they thought this was a good compromise rather than completely change the games's usual story approach. For those here for the monster hunting action without a lot of interrumptions it's there, and those more interested in the story and lore could just look up the manga and get all the juicy details.
man i agree so hard! the enviroments kinda do feel a bit lackluster, but i always felt like it had enough biomes to not feel TOO bad about that, and the combat, the mechanics, all felt SO castlevania, but translated to 3d, sure, new mechanics here arent perfect, but the weapon crafting, the pet evolutions, its all so perfect and fun a shame that they dropped this style, which felt very castlevania, and went for 'god of war but vampire' this style of game if given better budget and whatnot could be beyond great, yet instead they gave up on this formula to do something that to me feels very not castlevania
@@brunobruno-c1d castlevania was pretty much a 2d "god of war" symphony of the nigt had you fighting massive bosses and little guys to fight. Pretty identical to me the last 2 ones, but I do enjoy the metroid style to be added to it, or just another 2d metroidvania.
@@user-bj1mx2ip1c well the issue with it copying god of war is that the lords of shadows do feel like they just ctrlc'd GOW, without giving its own unique take to the formula or anything, not saying its not actually unique, i havent played enough to know that for sure, but what i played was too much of a copy to feel very castlevania to me
This was my first Castlevania period! I loved it so much that I bought the soundtrack. Abandoned Castle is probably one of my favorite first level themes that I never get tired of hearing.
Amen. COD seriously had so much going on, it was ridiculous, and in my humble opinion, I think it has the best soundtrack (and yes, I Abandoned Castle is like the best soundtrack)
Your comment is kinda strange "this was my first castlevania period!" As if there may be some dispute or something. If you said this is the best castlevania, period!" Then that would make more sense because you are trying to emphasize your opinion and love for this game but the saying "period!" after stating this was your introduction to the series just seems kind of funny.
Castlevania 1, 2, 3, 4, Rondo of Blood, Adventure 1, Adventure 2, Bloodlines, Adventure Rebirth, and Haunted Castle are all better games and all have better soundtracks to boot. While awful, Castlevania Judgement has a superior soundtrack too. While no Castlevania game has a bad soundtrack, did you really think Curse of Darkness's soundtrack could compete with the likes of Simon's Theme, Wicked Child, Aquarius, Bloody Tears, Iron Blue Intention, etc.? I mean, god! Have you never even played the 8 and 16-bit Castlevania games?
@@fdevlin5932 dude typed a whole ass paragraph to let the original poster that he thinks his favorite games are better I don’t think you should ask if he’s kidding
@生流 奏 Unlike your generation, I learned that not everything is subjective and that not all opinions are created equal. I am trying to explain what went wrong with the series for those of you that didn't experience the rise and fall as it was happening. What is your opinion on any of this and how extensive are your experiences with the Castlevania series that you are basing your opinions on? I'd really like to know because your whole gripe seems to be that I have a strong opinion on any of this to begin with. Me referring to some as "kid" was not meant to imply immaturity, but to suggest that they may not have as much experience with the series as they think they do. You would be amazed at how many people talk like they know what they're talking about regarding a particular game series, yet have almost no actual experience with it. For example, you would be amazed at how many of these "Zelda experts" on the internet have never even played a 2D Zelda game. They will scoff at the Wind Waker or Skyward Sword for not having "essential Zelda elements" like horseback riding, despite the fact that there were plenty of excellent games prior to Ocarina of Time. People will gush about Castlevania games that aren't actually very good, like Curse of Despair or Symphony of the Night, yet they have no real experience with many of the older games in the series and dismiss them as garbage because on the surface they look more primitive when actually many of them were better.

Not gonna lie. I was disappointed that I didn't get to see this games events animated in the Netflix series. I was so hyped to see Hector as a major character
Before even watching the vid I would have to agree. Compared to Lament of innocence (I love the story in that game just a bit more) Curse of darkness is definitely unique and Hector as a protag was dope as hell. I rlllly freaking wish that the show portrayed Hector the same as he was in CoD also wow I completely forgot about the Manga read those as well. Really gives Hector a bit more back story
The most upsetting parts of the anime were Hector and Isaac for me. It was so cool to see them, but they were so weak and Isaac could have been way cooler as a rival/sympathetic villain.
I still remember when I was little there was this tower that you can see at a distance and wonder if you could go there. Once I found out that you can use your dragon to fly over there as a kid it blew my mind. That tower dungeon to reach the 100th floor was no joke.
Lament of Innocence was not only my first proper Castlevania game, but my favorite, with my favorite Belmont. I'd heard favorable word of Curse of Darkness as a follow up but never played it. This gives me the resolve to try it this year. Thanks for this, Nyarly. Your Castlevania content is amazing.
Has more combat options and at worst it has the same issues as LOI as it's only drawback (monotonous backgrounds and maps tend to be what most reviewers scored against). I love both, unless you're one of those that can only enjoy CV cracking a whip there's no reason you wouldn't enjoy CoD.
@@richardnash6111 I personally really enjoyed the maps in both games. They each feel unique, and there are benefits to exploring the whole map. It feels just big enough to feel like you're going somewhere, but small enough to feel like the same world, which makes it feel (to me anyway) all the more vast because you travel everywhere by foot and go through so many different environments
curse is a completely diferent game to lament, its much closer to a 3d igavania. its story is trash(well, closer to mediocre in all honesty), but the gameplay i found to be more fun. dont expect a lament 2. its not.
I know this is a small thing but I noticed you didn't mention it in the video. If you press square and then x right after, you will perform a jumping attack. Not only can this be used to steal from some of the enemies when you don't have the mage type's time stop ability but lighter enemies are dragged into the air and it can be used to either quickly start an aerial combo or to get in some extra hits instead of ending your ground combo.
Yep. Since Flame Demons start showing up for the first time at the tail end of the Baljhet Mountains, you can use a knock up/vertical launch attack, then jump and Steal to get the earliest Phlogiston in the game. It's a very tight timing window, and cursing like a sailor may ensue, but it's totally worth it.
@@HeWalksAmongstus I hated myself and my life every time I decided to steal for Phlogiston, but when you finally get it, all of the negative feelings wash away. @@magetsalive5162 Not as bad as trying to steal Dark Matter. Blaze Phantoms won't stop jumping around, instead of attacking you, won't sit in the corner, won't do the right attack, and even if they finally do a backflip after several hundred years, the game just decides not to register your prefect block, or you'll just miss a steal because you pressed it a frame too early or too late. Just the worst.
Heads up Nyarly: @16:13 the Piko Piko Hammer is a general toy that existed in Japan long before Amy had it in Sonic Adventure. I had one in the 90s - it's just a plastic toy with soft ends and a squeaker in the middle so it makes a noise when you bonk it.
I actually enjoyed Lament at the time, but Curse of Darkness was my JAM. It almost totally nailed everything I liked about the Igavania era, and brought it to 3D. The familiars, the crafting, the weapons and gear, the secrets and quirky fun things, and the ethereal elegance that comes with Ayami Kojima's art style.
Worst part is, they could have given him a comparable arc and let him rebel against Carmilla, but no, let's make the maniacal bloodsuckers "morally complex" because we can't commit to making them villains, and Hector's just kinda there as the redhead's boy toy until she gets a sympathetic end that she didn't deserve. I hate this show so goddamn much, and then it somehow got _worse._
Even as someone who mostly likes that show. Hector is one of the biggest flaws of that show. Mostly everyone was done well (minus in S3) but Hector was done really poorly in that show.
Castlevania Curse of Darkness is my favorite game of all time! About the Flame Demons, you can steal from them easily using the jump kick attack, that is something all weapons can do. You do It with Square + X on the PS2 Version. You have to do this attack and use you second jump, and then press O to steal.
favorite game of all time? What? Thats craxy. Crazyvania Like DMC3 absolutely curbstomps this game. Even LoI is better imo. The two main gripes I habe with this game is: 1)no whip (unless you unlock Trevor. Damn it game just let me play Trevor from the start) 2)the map layout. Confusing af and bland and samey cooridors

Incredible video and I completely agree with you. Curse of darkness really feels like a 3D metroidvania game and the music is just fantastic. I say both Lament of innocence and Curse of darkness are both super underrated.
Oh man i feel nostalgic about this game, the weapon craft system, stealing material from any enemies in different ways, and collecting summon familiar and leveling them up. Also the soundtrack just 👌👌👌
i appreciate this deep review into my favorite 3D Castlevania. There is so much to love in this forgotten gem, but i have to give it kudos for the especially intimidating fight against Trevor Belmont. The atmosphere, the small dialog, the realization that yeah, Trevor IS a threat. Also, the music in that battle is one of my top ten tracks in all the franchise.
It's so nice to finally see this game get some love. It's one of my favorite games in my favorite series. While Symphony of the Night will always be my favorite, this is a close second. My wife even got it for me as a Christmas gift a few years ago because I talked so fondly of it. Thank you for letting me re-live this again.
I’ve been slowly getting into Castlevania primary due to the anime but Curse of Darkness has definitely piqued my interest (and now I really wanna check it out). Though being sort of forgotten at least by Konami is a real shame since it sounds really fun and deserves some sort of remaster/remake. I think if the manga-exclusive story elements were put in the game via extra cutscenes and both the plot and characters were more ironed out it could garner more interest and fans. Doubt a remaster or remake is possible at this point, especially with Konami more interested in gambling machines, but hey a man can dream.
Personally, after having replayed Curse and Lament just last year, I've come to appreciate Lament far more than I did as a kid. Now I prefer it over Curse.
Glad to hear someone else has the same opinion as me. I have always thought Lament was better (even though Curse is still quite good overall). The guy in this video acts like Curse is overlooked compared to Lament when it is actually the opposite. The vast majority of people seem to prefer Curse, even though Curse got worse reviews upon release than Lament did. Even though I still own both games for PS2, a couple of years ago I replayed Lament on PS4 because they added it on the PS Store. I was waiting for them to add Curse, because I wanted to play it again too, but they never did add it for some reason...
@@skeletankmcgraw7343 i'm asking because I've tried to look for it in the PS Store before and I didn't find it. Only recollections of Castlevania games or older games on their own, not LoI.
It's really hard (at least for me) to pick between Curse of Darkness and Lament of Innocence. Both are great games and both have some of the best music from entire Castlevania series.
i wasnt a fan of lament due to it leaning more into an arena fighter and being less interesting with its gameplay. i do think curse was closer to what you would expect as a 3d igavania, and i would even put it as having one of the best sub systems in the franchise.
I like the various ways you can augment sub weapons in LOI. I usually used the Cross that projected it outward seemed to eat HP on bosses. And that multi tiered new game plus boss is fun. COD has more systems to mess with though and that's usually the best part of Igarashi designed CVs.
Definitely my favorite of the 3D Castlevania games, and I even liked it better than some of the 2D Castlevania games. Extremely underrated game. And don't even get me started with the song, "A Toccata into Blood Soaked Darkness."
I remember playing and enjoying this game when I was in middle school. I loved it so much! 2 years ago my boyfriend bought a copy of the game for my birthday. I was nervous that it wasn't going to be as good as I remembered, but I was very wrong! This game is so much fun and it's so beautiful! Absolutely underrated
Yesss, Curse of Darkness!! Such a great game, imo of the best castlevanias, really, just a joy to play. And the soundtrack is fantastic, so good to hear Yamane not being limited by crappy soundcards like DS. Btw, loving the Castlevania videos, please keep going!
The introduction was really weird in that game I agree. This can easily get a remake that can give it justice. Honestly I see this game as a precursor for what Soul games would be in the future.
So many memories with this game. I remember watching my brother spend hours mastering on blocking Death's big bang shots to steal Death's Pulse and craft the scythe. He was aware of the invincibility jar exploit but he wanted to do it legit.
Been loving your Castlevania content lately! Still my favourite series of all time. It started however with Castlevania 64. My very first Castlevania game. I always liked this game. It is a hidden gem for this series. Too bad it never got a fair shot at greatness. Though Dragonforce did do a song about it recently...
There were some Curse of Darkness Devil monster Easter Eggs in the Castlevania TV series. The main one that I can think off the top of my head, was Issac's loyal Devil type monster at the end of season 3 and throughout season 4. It would be a safe bet to say other Curse of Darkness monsters made cameos in the TV series.
13:20 About that part.. There's a theory that says that Trevor had a bit of the curse inside of him that made him so aggressive during the events of the game and that's why he attacked Hector and refused his help
That's an interesting theory. One that is definitely plausible. I also speculate Trevor travelling alone without Sypha or any back up is also due to how powerful the curse is and how it affects people.
This was my first castlevania game, and still my favourite. I really loved engaging with the innocent devil and weapon upgrading systems. And the music is still my favourite in the entire series.

Hi there if you uh...managed to find my comment! I just wanted to say that along with the right button on the controller doing a combo "finish" the attack type I.D will also do a move dependent on what button you press. The right button will generally involve the I.D teleporting behind the enemy to launch it in the air. The left button has the I.D teleport in front of the enemy for more damage and generally sends them rolling backwards
I actually bought lament of innocence and Curse of darkness both at a convention at 1 point. I definitely enjoyed curse of darkness's combat more and watching this makes me want to go back and play through it again. Which brings me to this point, I remembered I was so excited about the Netflix anime and found out that Hector and Isaac were both gonna be in it and was like oh my God the characters from curse of darkness are gonna be in it awesome! You can imagine my disappointment with what they did to Hector but ironically that they made Isaac cool....... At least Hector got to smash a hot red haired vampire lol. Still that disrespect that they did to him throughout the show was awful which is why CoD Hector is still best Hector.

YES! THANK YOU! So happy to hear some love being put out there for this game! I actually got this as one of the first games I got for my Xbox in 2008 (yes, I wanted an original Xbox in 2008. I already owned a PS2 and GC and wasn't really interested in the seventh gen yet) I hadn't heard much about it but I really liked Dawn of Sorrow and Symphony of the Night, so I figured why not? It ended up being a treat from top to bottom, and I didn't find out til years later that this game poorly received, which still kind of baffles me. Sadly, my original Xbox randomly died a few years ago, and my save data with it, but in the time since, I have managed to find a PS2 copy and am looking forward to playing it again after all these years! Fun random fact: My mom ended up getting really into this game, too, and became a fan of Castlevania in general. I do like curse of darkness and I honestly hated how that animated series that came out recently treated those characters. Hector being a little wuss and Isaac being insanely boring. Though I still will say I enjoyed Lament more than curse so much so I would put lament in ether first or second when it comes to my favorite castlevania games. A remaster of these two ps2 games for current consoles sure would be nice.
I've yet to play Lament myself, but I do enjoy the OST on that one as well. The PS2 Castlevania's music was Michiru Yamane's best work on the whole. It really is tragic how they butchered both Hector and Isaac to the point they may as well be Warren's OC's.

Yeah, definitely, and one of the things that I disliked the most about the Netflix series from what I have seen so far.
Hector is one of my fav Castlevania protags....possibly my favorite entirely...and the Netflix series is an absolute insult to him. It's ridiculous.
Agreed.
The real problem was with the higher ups at Konami. How they handled the remake amongst other skeletons confirmed this for me.
Yea, Konami has always been a dogshit company, they were just blessed with talent and the franchise IP's they'd create.
Blame Kojima too for demanding so much money from Konami for his insanely high budget games. they were dead focus on MGS
Here’s a fun fact- Konami flat out just ripped Death’s model from this game out and made it bigger to make the Time Reaper from Judgement
I think they also recolored it. I recently replayed CoD and from memory, the Time Reaper is a lot more blue than purplish.
it warms my heart seeing people giving some attention to my favorite 3d Castlevania
I was about to comment the same thing
Me too
To me, Curse of Darkness has the best 3D Castlevania soundtrack by far
It's great, and I can respect the view point that it's the best, but Lament of Innocent's soundtrack is definitely playing in the same ballpark.
Absolutely the best soundtrack
I've been UA-cam-Shipping you two for like, at least a year now, btw
Counterpoint: If it was important to your game/movie/show/comic etc, then why didn't they put it in their game/movie/show/comic?
@@BreadLordDormammu Time/money restraints
I think trying to attempt to put so much story into the game was too big a risk, as it would have been criticized for breaking up the pace. Devil May Cry survived having a shoddy story as the action made it irrelevant. The supplementary material increased the popularity, though I don't think it translated to the game sales too much.
@@BreadLordDormammu Castlevania games have always been pretty light storywise, maybe they thought this was a good compromise rather than completely change the games's usual story approach. For those here for the monster hunting action without a lot of interrumptions it's there, and those more interested in the story and lore could just look up the manga and get all the juicy details.

a shame that they dropped this style, which felt very castlevania, and went for 'god of war but vampire'
this style of game if given better budget and whatnot could be beyond great, yet instead they gave up on this formula to do something that to me feels very not castlevania

Your comment is kinda strange "this was my first castlevania period!" As if there may be some dispute or something. If you said this is the best castlevania, period!" Castlevania 1, 2, 3, 4, Rondo of Blood, Adventure 1, Adventure 2, Bloodlines, Adventure Rebirth, and Haunted Castle are all better games and all have better soundtracks to boot. While awful, Castlevania Judgement has a superior soundtrack too.
Yep ^^ Best final boss song in any and every game.

My friend. I know that feeling all too well.

Yes his character was handled worst
He was handled great though? He had a great character arch and growth, same for Isaac, they were both fantastic.

After watching the Netflix series and having no idea major characters like Hector and Isaac have their OWN GAME.
This video was a pleasant surprise.
They butchered my boy in the shitflix series. No Rozaly, no nuts, it's absolutely disgusting that there was no justice FOR THE DEATH OF ROZALY
Both games are fantastic. Play it.
Has more combat options and at worst it has the same issues as LOI as it's only drawback (monotonous backgrounds and maps tend to be what most reviewers scored against). I love both, unless you're one of those that can only enjoy CV cracking a whip there's no reason you wouldn't enjoy CoD.
@@richardnash6111
I personally really enjoyed the maps in both games. They each feel unique, and there are benefits to exploring the whole map. It feels just big enough to feel like you're going somewhere, but small enough to feel like the same world, which makes it feel (to me anyway) all the more vast because you travel everywhere by foot and go through so many different environments
curse is a completely diferent game to lament, its much closer to a 3d igavania. its story is trash(well, closer to mediocre in all honesty), but the gameplay i found to be more fun. dont expect a lament 2. its not.
first hour into curse and I already hated it, Lament is much better game despite the boxy maps
the downgrade from hector from the games to the anime was really disappointing isaac while not being the same did get lots of cool scenes
I know this is a small thing but I noticed you didn't mention it in the video. If you press square and then x right after, you will perform a jumping attack. Not only can this be used to steal from some of the enemies when you don't have the mage type's time stop ability but lighter enemies are dragged into the air and it can be used to either quickly start an aerial combo or to get in some extra hits instead of ending your ground combo.
oooo interesting thanks for sharing that also nice t see another fellow Zack fan 😎

I had NO idea people didn’t like curse of darkness, I absolutely adored that game
I don't think people gave it a chance. Came out not too long after lament. Most people thought it was just more of the same.
I agree and I feel the same way
Damn, thats HECTOR? shit. The anime did really did him dirty....
This is partly why I hate the Netflix show.

Glad to hear someone else has the same opinion as me. I have always thought Lament was better (even though Curse is still quite good overall). i wasnt a fan of lament due to it leaning more into an arena fighter and being less interesting with its gameplay. i do think curse was closer to what you would expect as a 3d igavania, and i would even put it as having one of the best sub systems in the franchise.
I like the various ways you can augment sub weapons in LOI. I usually used the Cross that projected it outward seemed to eat HP on bosses. And that multi tiered new game plus boss is fun.
COD has more systems to mess with though and that's usually the best part of Igarashi designed CVs.

About that part..

I'm that one weirdo who's favorite Castlevania game is this one so I'm glad that there's more love thrown at it in the past few years, i finished the game a couple of years ago and it was really sad seeing that there weren't many videos about it on the internet, so thank you for making this vid
I’ve pretty much just sticked to the 2D games but you make this game sound pretty awesome. If I can find a way to play it I will definitely
only possible with emulators unfortunaly. i still have the cd for the ps2 version to this day and can send you the ISO if you want
its basically the best 3d igavania. it does alot right, even though the story is mediocre to bad, the gameplay itself is solid. the steal mechanic in particular is HANDS DOWN the best implementation of an action stealing in ANY game. PERIOD.
@@marcosdheleno .i liked the steal mechanic. avoided a lot of the RNG from item drops, you needed to learn the timings though, and that took effort. but still less tedious than grinding for that one item for like 2 hours
@@thefool8224 there's another thing, the droprates in this game are very fair. specially compared to other igavanias. even compared to something like circle.
I remember playing this in iraq. Loved the music. I hesitated to end boss fights a few times.
..and that first level theme to begin the game was so metal.
I’m always glad to see this game get positive attention. It was actually my first Castlevania game and the reason I do so much on the internet today. I just wish they’d remake it so more can play, since the only way to play it is either the PS2 or original Xbox.
Also, one of the best soundtracks in gaming, with my favorite being Toccata into Bloodsoaked Darkness aka Dracula phase 1.
Edit: I forgot about the crafting system, I actually remember making a full inventory for all weapons and stopped being able to play before I could finish armor and Innocent Devils.
Agree on the OST. This and Lament Of Innocence is Michiru Yamane's best work.
before he passed on, my uncle called this his favorite Castlevania game. I forget the rest.
I really wish I can hunt down a copy in my town because I'm thinking about trying it out thanks to this video. But let's hope Konami releases a Castlevania 3D collection with Curse of Darkness in it in the future. Plus this game released on the day I was born along with DMC3, Ultimate Spider-Man, and Resident Evil 4.
that cover alone makes it a mandatory physical copy buy.
THANK YOU. This game literally had me entertained for well over a year straight as a kid and I STILL want a remaster. I can't talk enough good about this game.
Finally someone talks about my favorite Castlevania Game
It’s great to see Curse getting some recognition. This was a really cool video, well presented, persuasive, well edited. And I like how you included some tips. Keep the Castlevania material coming
👍👍
If the game had come out a year or two earlier it would have probably been remembered better.
I remember when I got a PS2 and both of these games on Christmas a couple years back.
Soooooo... does this video means that we will get a "can you beat" challenge for Curse of Darkness???
Please say YES
The problem is what could you even restrict? If we say no ID evolutions we have a roadblock that needs a specific fairy to clear. If we say no IDs outside of required uses then we have pretty meh combat. Doubly so if we say basic weapons only.
@@themettking how about no weapons?
@@MajorGari how about fist weapon only?
@@kakazul9165 fist weapons are quite good, but if you use no weapons, you still get the moveset from fist weapons but without the damage...
Oh boy, how I miss playing this game... it was soo good
@@MajorGari it will be painful to watch tbh, the only way to get a decent damage is by grinding, and a very long one too, like his fist only DOS challenge
Absolutely, this game is so much better when you replay it and understand the mechanics.
Music is superb, period.
And yes, Netflix played dirty to our boi Hector just because this game is underrated.
"The game doesn't explains what this curse of darkness is" I think the opening text crawl alludes to it? People are in the midst of sickness, famine and are killing each other all over europe.
While I like the plot the curse plays, it would've been cool had the curse played some role in the game itself to further show just how powerful Dracula's Curse was. Especially once you enter his newly ressurected castle.
Such a great game. Even to this day, I listen to the soundtrack very often. The game is also great and loved playing it over and over back in the day.
Didnt know Hector and Isaac were actual characters in games since i only watched the animated series on netflix!
I was shocked when they were announced for the show. Someone other than me remembered this game and the characters!
You did such a good job with this video, I immediately bought a copy on ebay just because you sold it so well
It's a shame how underrated this game is. While far from perfect it's still a pretty damn good game, I've been a fan of it since it's release and never understood all the negative attention it got. I can only hope it gets recognition some day and maybe a rerelease or enhanced port with nice QoL upgrades and some bonus content...
Who am I kidding, this is PachinKonami we're talking about here... 😔
at least Konami might be doing a similar redemption era like capcom did 🌻
I'm sad to this day to know that they won't ever remake this gem :'(
As much as I think Curse of Darkness is great, I do admit I also really liked Lament of Innocence
W
Lament of Innocence have great things, but the control is sometimes strange.
YES!
She owns a Curse of Darkness canvas messenger bag that she still carries every once in a while xD
I do like curse of darkness and I honestly hated how that animated series that came out recently treated those characters. Hector being a little wuss and Isaac being insanely boring. People saying that its the best video game adaptation clearly never touched curse of darkness.
On of my favourite games of all time. Thank you bro for this video, not too many people praise this game, and its criminal. Both of the PS2 Castlevania games deserve a full fledged remake. You gained my sub, and you have made my mind up on what game to stream next. MUCH RESPECT
I knew Issac and Hector must have come from one of the games... but I couldn't figure out which one! Cool to see their characters then compared to now in the anime!
