The acting class scenes twist my brain in knots because these are good actors who are playing terrible actors learning to have flashes of being decent at acting. And they NAIL it. You watch it like "oh this is about to be great! ehhh that's not that good actually, but it's better...ohhhhhhhh that's exactly what they're going for..."
This is what learning acting is. Getting into the soul of your actors/actresses and making them act a certain way. You have to summon all of you. You can’t just bullshit. Edit: one time, a kid talked about his drug addiction on stage. And had a mental breakdown. His performance was phenomenal after the breakdown.
This scene right here shows that Gene is just as manipulative as Fuches. He was a therapist before becoming an acting teacher so he knows the human mind and how to exploit it for profit. What better way to break people down and show up the next day then acting class.
I would flop and die on the stage in her place. On the bright side, becoming an actress isn't in my career plans.Becoming a film director/writer/pre-K teacher, however, definitely is..
@@dafilmqueen556 look. you have to make choices. teacher will be stable. film director will not, not for about 10-15 years. minimum. if ever. but if you fucking want it, don't write pre-k teacher. write director & dont be scared. actualize that shit. you will always choose the easiest choice, so make the easiest choice something hard.
Oh, my god. I never noticed that on any Barry re-watches. She's doing the worst scene in Magnolia! (Great movie, but damn was that drug addict girl the worst character)
damn watching this after the show ended is crazy. nearly a perfect recreation of sally’s first scene when she adopts gene’s teaching method, except she gets criticized and abandoned for it. now that i think about it barry was praised for his first kill then criticized for it afterwards, trying to chase that high. huh. anyways great show
0:58 Sally starting to say “hell” but switching to “fuck” is such a hilarious little detail. You have to be a great actor to so convincingly act like a bad one.
Makes me think of Shelly Duval and Kubrick in the Shining. I think she probably knew what he was doing... but doing what Gene does to Sally for almost almost a year
@@miru.m00n50 True, boo, true… listening and reacting to false sims is tough, especially when you’re trying to tell the story emotionally right to the audience.
it was an acting lesson that Bill hader actually saw in an actual acting class. The director made one of the students cry to get her to a certain place for a role, so thats why Gene did it. He knew it would get her to the proper place to make the scene sellable and believable.

art
I like that now they’re also showing the negative aspects of Gene’s methods. That while it can get results it’s still abuse.
Whatever
The parallels between both versions of this scene are great.
This show had me the moment I heard Sally rehearsing a scene from magnolia outside the theater. Such a great movie, and such a great show.
This feels like Whiplash.

I can't believe 33 people are this stupid
I agree, he's a manipulative narcissist, but he has different boudaries
@Gbomb31 Also Gene isn't putting his student's lives in danger

I love gene’s character introduction. “bullshit. BULLSHIT!” Winkler kills the role so hard
Sally later went on to play Thanos in Infiniti war
I wasn't aware Thanos had a skirt on..😂😂🤣🤣
Her scene is from the Paul Thomas Anderson film "Magnolia"

"you know i had to do that right? i love you" is a fucking gut punch when you're aware of sally's past

anyways great show
Wow! I really love this whole scene. I mean..the intensity!!
the guy who takes life Is mesmerized by "creating a life on the stage"
damn it sally why do you make me feel bad for you
Because Sarah Goldberg is a brilliant actress
And empathy is an important emotion that makes everything more complex!
@@andrewstephens5885 bet you wouldn't be that brave 2 years ago
That one dislike was from Sally because she doesn't like herself failing.

Came back here after the episodes with Sally teaching the class
Now sally recreated this scene with her “protégé”
Makes me think of Shelly Duval and Kubrick in the Shining. I think she probably knew what he was doing... but doing what Gene does to Sally for almost almost a year
Bill and this show Barry is so good. Cant wait for season 4!
Barry sitting there at 0:41 like
“..wha..”
"Fonzie" went full Cubric on this thing. Beat them up and take 62 whatever. :D
actors scare me. if someone can act: imagine how easily they'll lie. naw man. naw.
sounds like you have trust issues tbh
actually, as a theatre actress, lying isn't always easy. being an actress/actor means acting through the truth and truly reacting to false stims :)

lol barry's face
Sounds like Julianne Moore's scene in the pharmacy. Magnolia.
Julianne was amazing in that scene
1:44 lol why is this angle so awkward I love it
God Sally is so annoying blaming Barry when all he did was literally stand there lmao.
Lol tip of the iceberg.
The Fonz.
Its so weird how gene does that
damn it man, I wanna watch this show but I can't afford HBO.
I may have a streaming solution for you
Get HBO Max
Just pirate it lol
🏴☠️
Dang Sally Reed is so uptight about everything
Magnolia..
Julianne Moore pharmacy scene Magnolia
Does anyone know where I can find where the one guy doing the Gary Oldman impersonation on barry it was a good funny scene
Was there a main reason Gene was extreme mad at Sally
the main reason was to get her in a place mentally to make the scene authentic.
Wayne, you gotta watch the show.
@@racheldollton I'm extremely sorry and I won't ask anymore okay

Julianne Moore does it way better
I love this shit 😂
Maybe you should try acting.
