Ray stands alone on the Kinks pedestal. But can't deny the contributions of brother Dave. Dave's singing and playing a MAJOR part of the Kinks sound!🙌🎶🎵🎸
So many wonderful songs and such an original, creative and talented man. A beautiful documentary which takes me way back to discovering the Kinks in my early teens and absorbing the lyrics and melodies then. Fifty years on and the music still speak to my heart.
The absolute speak of British pop music. No rules, just pure freedom and that’s why we love it to this day. I teach young kids and even their favourites are those 60s songs along with some stuff from the other golden age of music in the 90s. Peace brothers and sisters ✌🏼
What about Scott Walker’s ‘67 to ‘70 period? Scott was arguably more of an outsider because he was an immigrant. They both looked at their subject matter with empathy - both great.
What a beautiful little docu... Love Ray and his great tunes. That intense search to respond to the world around him on his own terms speaks to me. Many of his songs are a Remembrance of Things Past, that kind of writing is so intimate, soul baring and fixes things in time, to be revisited over and over. Lyrical story telling, inviting the listener to participate in the longing for the lost moments. Only someone who has a complex inner life with incredible depth could write like that.
He's still the single most underrated songwriter... Not so much in Britain but certainly in America. Dave and him invented punk rock. Some may argue The Who, but they were too Mod in 64'... too clean and tidy.
Could you fucking IMAGINE hearing You Really Got Me for the first time ,say,on your way to work in 1964????? It would have blown fuckin MINDS man,SO fuckin HEAVY,no one touches Ray&The Kinks.
What made the Kinks, for me, such a great band was their coice of instrumentation and guitar sounds. So much variety. So much innovation. A really great ear for something out of the ordinary.
How wonderful to find this! So much information from one of my favorite songwriters ever! And nice to hear some of his solo stuff. Any Kink fan needs to check out Ray and Dave’s solo music! Closest we’ll ever get to a reunion!
Seen Ray do final show of tour at paramount L.I. Newyork.Very fan friendly sounded great. DID a lot of oldies..we heard it was being recorded. True treat
Bowie callin it a fuzz box when Dave just used a razor to slash his amplifier - Hendrix came later (Dave also made the flying V look cool way before Jimi did. And I will say I am a way bigger Hendrix fan than I am Dave Davies... but I have to say, Dave got there first Jimi!!!
Almost all of the Kinks videos neglect to include "Percy" and Village Green Society 1 and 2. In my estimation they should have been included. Different, but with a solid message.
Nice documentary. Thanks for posting. Ray seems more relaxed and open than in some other documentaries I have seen. (To stop me wondering, what language are the subtitles in? I'm guessing Danish.)
@@Twothink Thanks for putting me straight. I'm very interested in languages and can speak/read a few besides my native English - but not including any of the Scandinavian ones, as you can tell 😊
Thanks for uploading this, I'm a life long fan. Have you read his autobiography X IRay? I'ts a great read, I strongly recommend to all fans of Ray and the Kinks!
Thanks for the recommendation Neil. It sounds interesting; here's a bit of blurb about it: "This subversively brilliant, one-of-a-kind rock autobiography ingeniously styled as a biography, is written by a nameless, faceless writer hired by an Orwellian entity called "the Corporation" to capture the essence of Ray Davies, lead singer and songwriter of The Kinks and one of the greatest rock and rollers of all time. The Kinks front man reveals his life and times to the young writer, often seemingly passing his stories directly into the writer's consciousness. Carnaby Street, "Top of the Pops," the Cavern Club, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who and other fixtures of the times fade in and out of this compelling narrative. Part autobiography, part social history, part psychological thriller, this elusive and daring book exposes rock stardom as the heaven, hell, and purgatory it is." Not quite your average rock memoir, by the sound of it..
I know- I was watching this anticipating hearing about Arthur (my favorite Kinks album) as well as Lola vs. Powerman (my second favorite)but all we got was a few moments Victoria-what gives?

I love everything about the Kinks and Ray Davies. Everything was so well written and drenched in meaning!
Don't forget the atmosphere within their lyrics and music.. especially their ballads more then anything
The Kinks and Ray Davies solo work is always well worth listening (and thinking) to. He is a great writer.
I am so glad this all was saved on film. It makes my heart melt. Thankyou.
As a songwriter, Ray is second to none. 💜
This with bells on! Totally unique among all the greats.
Agreed
What about Scott Walker’s ‘67 to ‘70 period? Scott was arguably more of an outsider because he was an immigrant. They both looked at their subject matter with empathy - both great.
Dave was THE most fashionable of the group. Got to see Ray live in 2011 and it was one of the best shows of my life.
as long as i can hear Ray and Dave sing together and Dave smiling---I am in Paradise---
❤

So many fabulous songs!! The Kinks are unique and their music is just as well. Long live Ray and Dave !!
I love days it has the brilliance of let it be a kind of reflective spirituality.
@@neilfranklin5644 Absolutely!
No one can pigeonhole Sir Raymond Davies. His songs are remarkable in their diversity!! 👍👍👍
Ray's a great artist with a sure feel for the right harmony between lyrics and music.
One of the worlds greatest lyricist and song writer.
I just want to marry him.
I want to caress his face and listen to him forever.
Genius songwriter 🎵
Too many songs for me to pick a favourite... they are all so diverse
Ray Davies is what the Nobel Prize is made of☺️
Met him at a book signing in the 90s and asked him how long it took to write "Sunny Afternoon" - "About 20 minutes, that one". Amazing!
I'm American and I don't hate y'all!
DANG the Kinks had some great songs!
"See My Friends" is my favorite Ray song. The drone is hypnotizing.
He's still the single most underrated songwriter... Not so much in Britain but certainly in America. Dave and him invented punk rock. Some may argue The Who, but they were too Mod in 64'... too clean and tidy.

It would have blown fuckin MINDS man,SO fuckin HEAVY,no one touches Ray&The Kinks.
Brilliant. Thanks. And Ray looks very pretty, what he might call 'a nice bit of old'.
What made the Kinks, for me, such a great band was their coice of instrumentation and guitar sounds. So much variety. So much innovation. A really great ear for something out of the ordinary.
Chilly chilly is evening time........thanks for keeping us warm, Raymond Douglas
So glad I watched this - Thankyou for the day... What great artist!
Excellent documentary. Definitely my favorite lyricist. Moreover I think he’s under rated
What a nice surprise to see my two heroes Ray & Mick Jagger. Support the same Football team as me!
This is almost a biography of kinks 64 to 68 Brilliant Ray.
What a talent
Wonderful songwriter and lyrics.x

Incredible story teller!
I have read XRAY by Ray Davies. It's on my bookshelf.I don't expect to meet anyone who reads the same books as me or even listen to the same music.
Ray wrote a book? I'll get one right now!

Just watch BBC doc on making of The Village Green Preservation Society. Ray Davis as really aged since this doc in 2003. Time has no friends.
Thank you for posting this! ☮

nah i don't do autobiographies it's like what they say, never meet your heroes they're bound to disappoint, which they do most if not all the time
I don't have heroes, therefore I'm never disappointed.

And now Americana, which is to my mind even better.
seems like a pretty cool cat
I like the Kinks music very much
My three favorite English bands? The Kinks, Dire Straits and everyone else.
Loved these since I got apeman as a primary school kid,

So AfterThe Fall was written before the shooting? I had assumed it referred to the shooting.
Check out Ray at 9:05 " Stand Uo Comic" 2003 Konk Studio. Was thus ever released? I dont believe I own this. May be titled " Thats That"
genius
WHAT IS THE SOURCE WHERE HE SINGS ALONE ALMOST-CH 2 IN CORNER?

No mention of the fuckin Lola vs. Powerman album. C'mon - Come Dancing?
I know- I was watching this anticipating hearing about Arthur (my favorite Kinks album) as well as Lola vs. Powerman (my second favorite)but all we got was a few moments Victoria-what gives?

Maureen Michalanney, sorry you are such a bitter twisted person. Please get some help. Wow, it’s been 5 years now. Hope you are OK now.
The Kinks were invited to perform on Live Aid, but refused!
Dave had appendicitis and couldn’t make it for Live Aid
Why would they want to Patronise a Joke like Geldof,No way would I have accepted that either.
