I'm an 80's kid that got hypnotized by 60's British rock. The Beatles were my favorite forever, but as time went on, The Kinks overtook them, and no one's topped them ever since.
@@fs55261 a year on, i will have to hearand watch this interview now. I am still start ruck about the moment I saw Ray, coming back from a jog in Highgate woods. Wearing topper Headons gear (a fashion tip from Bruce Lee). Bright yellow joggers with long black stripes on sleeves. Talking to his “cellulare”…i was starstruck. My four year old in the back of the car had had a few KINKS tunes implanted in her since birth. And on various audio tapes. I sayd “look dear, this is the man, there, the famous singer”
My grandmother in Manchester on The Kinks back in the 1960s, "Them boys wanna get things done -- get noticed." Shortly afterward, my grandmother convinced my Mum and Dad to buy me a guitar. Thanks Gran! Great video! Many thanks! "All Day and All of the Night," "Til the End of the Day" "She's Got Everything" -- still clicks and throws sparks! Thanks, brothers Davies and band!
It's only been in the last week that I have come to a conscious appreciation of Dave Davies' contributions to the Kinks recordings. Beyond the innovative distortion of "You Really Got Me", his guitar work is consistently masterful. And while his thin tenor as a lead voice may take some getting used to, many a Kinks record would be weaker without that same voice on the chorus. Please take a bow, Dave Davies!
Them four kids knew something about music, arrangements, wit and bringing an audience to daance while the more cerebral types in the auditorium listened in awe. They had it all. Fabulous foresome…and Talmy
Agreed, Dave always brought out the best in Ray's songs and played what was right for the songs. His back-up vocals also were an integral part of the Kinks sound as well. No disrespect to Dave's talent but what do you do when your brother is one of the greatest songwriters ever? You have no choice but to play second fiddle.
Dave was the handsome sensitive one and Ray although very talented was also quite narcissistic even admitting he would insist tv concert cameras were solely focused on him during performances rather than Dave and other band members. I guess now admitting he was full of himself due to worldwide success is a step forward.
I heard Ray Davies himself, on radio in the 80s (Casey Kasem interview probably), say the name is pronounced "Davis", not "Daveeez". You can hear him pronounce the name "Davis" at 5:59 here.
very interesting indeed. yes, this seems like dave right after his stroke. fascinating sibling rivalary. both very talented and brilliant men. thank you, bbc
I truly love the KINKS, it hit me like a rock when I first heard their music, You Really Got Me, All Day And All If The Night, Tired Of Waiting, Well Respected Man, I am A Ape Man, and I can keep on going. The Kink were like rock, comedy, love, sincerity, warm, intriguing, they made a point they filled what they played they were in extraordinary band they were deep sincere and dedicated. They were a world of talent you don’t hear these types of bands anymore they just don’t come around as often as one hope. Innoway to me they were like the Beatles but the opposite the Beatles or sensational they delivered a certain taste, then the kinks came along they were the opposite of the Beatles in regards of style but they had the talent energy are awesome.I hope I make some kind of sense in describing what I feel about this group. No I believe dave had a stroke but still I’m so thankful he’s around and he still looks great but he’s Dave from the kinks as a sectional musician full of talent brilliant. Dave I truly have the upmost respect for you love you dearly mate 🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
They had the craziest "Brotherly" hate/love musician-relationship. I keep hoping someday there will be a movie about them. It would be EPIC! btw.... First band I ever saw live, 1982. No other rock and roll story compares.
I love Dave's voice not to mention his guitar prowess and sex appeal and umph. I listen to "Strangers" and "Good Golly Miss Molly" wonder what could have been.
AMAZING VIDEO. i 've also got a brother (i am the younger one) and our relationship is also quite ..... difficult at times. I'm very touched to see this film. Thanks for uploading.
The bros allegedly never wrote together. They worked out and chiseled out the works in the stuio or the rehearsal room but they never shared songwriting time. Songwriting is a gift or a labout of love or both
I didn't get into the Kinks until maybe ten years ago, but reading up on them I got the impression Ray could be a little bit of a bastard. You could see the pain on his face with Ray introduced him by mentioning his one solo hit. I'm glad Dave had such a thick skin and was willing to tolerate it. The Kinks wouldn't have been the same without him.
Well, I agree 50%. I think Preservation Act 1 is one of their best albums. However, I tried listening to Preservation Act 2 once, and I thought it was terrible. I'll give it another listen to see if my opinion will change.
I've heard that....now Ray admits he was a prat to almost everyone including fans. Seems especially in late 70's -80's when he had a few more hit songs.
It is a pity that mutual respect could not be achieved between the two very talented Davies brothers. Maybe they should have gone their separate ways musically long ago. Having been in multiple bands for 40 years, I find that respect, and responsibility, not affection, is the factor that keeps bands together. I have had to abandon playing gigs with certain friends in order to keep the friendship. I'd still play music with them and jam for fun, but not for the paying public.
John & Tom Fogerty also had a acrimonious relationship once they formed a band...with Tom commenting he could play but John had ' the sound' should be lead singer. Sadly John's talent also made him difficult to get along with and Tom eventually left the band.
Actually, it was Dave and drummer Mick Avory who had the only noticeable altercation early on. And that was always referred to in the papers at the time...
Wow this answers a lot of questions I have had since their first album ~ I know there were periods Dave would be absent from the group now I understand why
@@389383 when he…did he pull the plug out on it or was it a conscious group decision. Maybe Big Ray wanted a solo career and definitely had people courting him but Dave had such a massive part to play and in all fairness Big Brother Ray always praised his guitar playing and inventive rock licks
I don’t think working with his brother is good for Dave. Would I tell him to stop? Of course not. Some beautiful things can come from what is not good for us. But it’s good to beware of all risks and rewards, and proper boundaries.
What a shame that their relationship remains so toxic after all these years, even if I get the distinct impression that Ray bears the brunt of the responsibility for that.
Dave had a major stroke. He said he couldn't speak walk even feed himself. So the fact he had come back so far in such a short time was remarkable. Took alot of hard work determination.
It is unfortunate that Tom Fogerty didn't work out his differences with John before Tom passed away. I love the Kinks, but I like CCR more. CCR was the quissential american band.
John by many accounts' attitude was it's my way or no way once CCR became well known. I saw a 2 hr docu on roadies agents et al that witnessed the band during several scenarios such as rehearsing recording and contract negotiations and John had to be boss in everything. Even insisting they didn't need a lawyer to read the fine print in recording deals (stated he was more than capable of doing it ) which turned disasterous and effected the band members profits ownership of own music forever.. I think it comes with too much success too fast...many start to believe they are God like.
Dave is such a humble gentleman, to be able to maintain an extraordinary band and weather Ray's constant criticism and belittling. I think Rays was quite jealous of Dave and tried to tear him down brick by brick. Look at the starmaker tv special or any Kinks video, Ray is always featured and never giving the spotlight up.
Very true....I agree. Now as an old man Ray is realising how difficult big headed he was. Super talent doesn't mean you're allowed to treat people as underlings. And Ray admits he could be terribly nasty to fans.
Dave had a major stroke in 2004 while in an elevator. He was completely paralyzed on his right side cldn't speak walk play guitar. By 2006 he had made a miraculous recovery obviously with much determination on his part.
Dave should have left the group earlier since he apparently considered himself an equal to his brother's big songwriting talent which he was not. And years later here talking about an alleged suicide attempt, what rotten behavior and you can see he enjoyed telling it.
Dave Davies is possibly the most underrated guitarist in rock history. Ray Davies is one of the most brilliant lyricists, ever.

Dave is looking good after his stroke. He talks a bit slower but he recovered very well.
Real English music, by real English musicians . No one comes close to them, The #1 English rock group ever. GOD SAVE THE KINKS
What?? Were the Beatles from Mars or something? Sorry, but I think the All-English Beatles were THE Big Deal, as much as I love the Kinks.
"Stopped liking him as a person, although I still loved him... " Well put!
I don't know how he can still say that... but I respect it hugely.
