I went through O'Hare once on a connecting flight to LAX. It was early morning and managed to get through customs and to my gate fairly quickly. No big lines or issues. Of course it helped that it was early May and the weather was not a problem.
I only flew in and out O'Hare a few times, but flying over Lake Michigan is always beautiful! O'Hare is very big and takes forever to get across. Make sure you have at least 45 minutes between layovers or you'll be guaranteed to miss your next flight!
I love how the new airport is very organic looking. All the brown wood and trees is a nice touch! Edit: Oh yeah, I also like how the design takes cues from the actual city itself, like the Chicago River.
Yes, as a Chicagoan I was really glad this was the design they selected. We're surrounded by brick, steel, and concrete in our building designs. Thankfully their being back the orchard in O'Hare. Midway just finished up their redesign last year.
One of the improvements I hope will be done is moving the O'Hare MTA stop to be closer to the terminals--or even making more stops, like a loop around the terminals. From what I remember when I lived there, the walk to & from the gates & the subway stop is one of the longest airport walks I can think of.
A direct hookup with Amtrak would also be great. Lots of O'Hare users are interested in catching a train, but this is a challenge because making the connection between the airport and Union Station is so inconvenient.
@@TracyBrashaw Yeah... no. Totally wrong. The blue line (train line which runs directly from ORD) Clinton stop is two blocks away from Union Station. I have never heard someone suggest that this isn't efficient enough.
@@bob_o_baby826 Chicago is cold and often snowy. Signage is also limited in this area. It's fine, but definitely not a world-class experience. With $9 billion being spent on the airport, I think that the resources probably exist to improve the facilities. As a Chicagoan that looks into infrastructure, would be very surprised if it goes to schedule. The satellite hubs sure, but terminal 2 seems daunting. Who knows, maybe the teams involved pull off a miracle and do it. Either way looks exciting, digging studiogang’s design!
Would be surprised if they don’t scale back the ambition of the design to save cost. It seems like with any major project like this that the designer has one vision and once the capital spend is more set and stone further down the line that’s when the scaling back happens. We’ll see
This place has alot of great potential. I have been traveling in and out of O’Hare for a good 20 years. For such a big city with such a sad crime problem. The folks that work there have always been in my opinion really nice.
I never knew that the airport had those kinda struggle. I just saw those numbers every year and said to myself, damn thats a big airport. But the change is more then needed. And as alwasy, what a great Clip from you guys! Ive loved it, thank you for that :)
I’ve been arriving into terminal five a lot lately from international flights on United. The cross terminal connections are really annoying nowadays. However, the arrival experience into O’Hare has been improving a lot at terminal five for international passengers. Everything looks and feels newer and nicer. This video was actually really exciting for me.
It has been many years since I flown in/out of O'Hare. I remember it looked very old and dated. I am glad to see that they are finally doing a makeover.
Great video - my only wish is that you would have mentioned the architect of Terminal 2's name, Jeanne Gang. She's an incredible architect who is already behind some of Chicago's most interesting and gorgeous newer buildings (The Aqua Tower and The St. Regis Chicago). Her work is stunning and I can't wait to see more of it.
It has the el to downtown which takes about 45 minutes and only gives you train access to the Loop - gawd forbid you want to transfer or wind up elsewhere on the north side or burbs. It’s not great but exists; in many places in Asia or Europe it would be a 10 or fifteen minute express ride to downtown and in a really well planned place, 30 minutes to most of the city via tram - metro transfers. America: where public infrastructure goes to suffocate to death.
Both O'Hare and the smaller domestic Midway airport have metro lines running directly into downtown Chicago. That's one priority cleared by both for 50 years now.
Been here twice as an arrival destination from Canada and then again to go back to Canada. Never had any issues with arrival or departure, other than a runway being backed up once. Which, cleared faster than I expected. The Montreal airport in Canada has been the one airport that I encountered the most issues with 😅 Good for Chicago, can't wait to see it again someday
I'm from Chicago and live here. I'm glad you were able to do a video on this project. Our previous Mayor, Rahm Emmanuel, made this a priority before he left. I'm looking forward to the day when this is done.
There is also a new Interstate (490) being constructed on the western edge. This will provide access to the new terminal and complete half of the Elgin-Ohare Expressway that was built in the 1980s
Very interesting video about this much needed project, but just one correction ... the widening of gates in T5 is to accommodate the new Boeing 777X series, not the Boeing 787 (which has been flying into and out of ORD using T5 for over a decade).
I actually love live music in airports, in Charlotte, NC they had a live piano player and rocking chairs in the food court, made traveling feel like a pit stop in a mall and a little less stressful!
You have no idea how happy this makes me, I’ve lived in Chicago my entire life and have wanted an o’Hare airport update for many years, it was nice when I was a kid in the 90s but it needs a modern architectural update! By the way the B1m has been one of my favorite UA-cam channels since I discovered it last year!!
I’m glad we’re finally focusing on the renewal of American infrastructure, specifically Airports. As the country that invented and pioneered flight and the commercial airport, It’s been difficult to see them reach and be pushed beyond their intended lifespan and become more difficult and expensive to maintain, showing signs of decay that just isn’t acceptable. I’m hoping this and the many tens of billions being spent overhauling other U.S. airports like JFK, LaGuardia, LAX, San Diego, Salt Lake City and Philadelphia expanding it’s cargo operations, will signal a new age in American commercial Aviation that makes domestic and international travel within and from the U.S a much more pleasant experience and take American Airports off of lists of the worst airport experiences. I know they’ll never be the super luxurious airports like those of the Emirates or major Asian hubs but, considering U.S. airports are in part, publicly funded, I wouldn’t want them to be. Just a simple, clean, modern and convenient experience with minimal hassle and no additional hoops to jump through.
I am actually a designer on this project (apart of the StudiORD team), apart of the terminal 5 expansion, the previous runway 9c construction and a aviation subject matter expert.... all this information is accurate but out dated. It is well together based on the available information but hope a updated video can be released in the future.

O hare is the airport outside of london I most use. I just love how they decorate in the winter. I’ve never actually experienced any delays or issues there. But I’m excited to see how it all looks when it’s complete
O’Hare is far and away the most depressing airport I’ve ever been to. The international terminal feels like a budget office block, with a school cafeteria thrown in for good measure. So glad to see it’s getting some much-needed work done. Great vid as always! (And some bonus travel trivia: O’Hare has the airport code ORD, because it used to be known as Orchard Place Airport. The more you know!)
Second that. Been through ORD more times than I care to remember and it is probably one of the worst international airports - topped only in the US by Philadelphia.
I like ORD, but agreed the international T-5 is pretty outdated. Definitely stuck in the early 90s and just adding more gates isn't going to change that. After the rest of projects are completed, they should probably just tare it down and get a do over
As someone who deals with this airport on a regular basis, I actually don't think it's that bad. I have only had one delay in the past 6 years and security has always been short enough for me to arrive 30 minutes before boarding and still get to the gate with time to spare. That being said, I think I have been lucky. All of the terminals are very ugly and the food options are just dreadful.
you have been very lucky if you've only ever had 1 delay. Either way, even if the airport didn't require an update in the present, it would still need one for the future.
@@softinix9462 it's just an airport terminal I don't really get what there is to be so miserable about. Also the international terminal got some renovations a couple years ago

This will be interesting...I like that so many major US airports like JFK, LAX, O'hare, Newark, and LaGuardia are going through massive upgrades to modernize/future-proof them
I’d love to see video about the San Antonio International airport, city council just approved an almost 3 billion dollar expansion that’ll hopefully be done in the next 6 years! San Antonio remains one of the biggest cities of the country without the airport infrastructure. That has effected its economy and downtown culture/ development, with some companies like AT&T relocating their headquarters due to lack of direct flights.
As a Houstonian, San Antonio deserves so much more investment in infrastructure whether in public transport or airports, y’all are the 7th largest city and the second largest in Texas. If Austin who’s smaller is getting developed, why can’t SA? I love y’all
San Antonio is in the middle of nowhere No one goes to San Antonia unless they have work or Business there. It is neither a major tourist attraction like Orlando or a major transit hub like Philadelphia So suck it up with what you got.
O hare gave me a pretty good experience when I was at Chicago. It is modern compared to other big city’s airports. JFK maybe the one that really need an upgrade

2 weeks ago I went to Chicago for the 1st time and flew in to O'Harre to terminal 5. Seeing this makes me glad because on our way home, we were on line to check our bags and then we got the notification that our flight was delayed. 5 min later, it got cancelled. So my friend and I had to sleep another nigjf in Chicago and the next morning everyone who had their flights cancelled from 3pm to the night was in terminal 5 at 3 am. To check in our bags didn't open til 5am and we had a 6am flight. Thankfully it's getting a renovation because yeah, 1st time wasn't a good one.
As an architect, I find very embarrassing when other architects are trying to explain their design by comparing the shape of the building with some anecdotical reference, when in fact they know it has nothing to do with it, just pure marketing to sell it to their stakeholders. I do not see anything functional, esthetical or technical about the random shape of a river in Chicago that is useful or valuable to design the new airport. Making people believe those stories only degrades our profession and creates a dishonest idea about how architecture is created.
It's worth noting that the decrepit Terminal 5 mentioned here is the international terminal and likely the first impression many foreigners will get of the US. It's like a ragged bus terminal inside, it's good they're fixing it.
0:38. My favourite 🤩 part of the video-that iconic ‘Home Alone’ airport 🛫 scene when that family were running 🏃♀️ to catch that flight ✈️ in that movie 🎥. “Run 🏃♀️, Run 🏃♀️, Rudolph, Santa’s 🤶 got to make it to town.”
I used to be glad that projects like this were going forward, since improvemen were needed; now I'm beginning to wonder if we aren't simply digging ourselves deeper into fossil-fuel transportation dependency by making airports bigger and more attractive.
What I find fascinating is the way that airport terminal layout is influenced by the number of airlines that serve the airport and whether it's mainly a domestic or international hub.
While we're at it can we do something about the CTA Blue Line? I can't imagine being an arriving tourist and the Blue Line is my first impression of Chicago.
Liking the video so far, but I thought it was a bit silly how they’re modelling one of the terminals on a river. Nobody who walks into the building is going to say, “wow, this looks just like the river not far from here!” Wouldn’t it just be better to design the building with practicality, efficiency, safety, and the environment in mind, and if there’s money left in the budget, some nice aesthetics?
@@georgecaplin9075 Well if you think about a 6x8 rectangle, the perimeter is 28. But if you split that up into three rectangles, each 2x8 and 20 perimeter, that's 60 total. And the area is equal so cost would be relatively similar.

@@carstarsarstenstesenn Can confirm
I only flew in and out O'Hare a few times, but flying over Lake Michigan is always beautiful! O'Hare is very big and takes forever to get across. Make sure you have at least 45 minutes between layovers or you'll be guaranteed to miss your next flight!
It was cool opportunity to work on one of the new runways as an intern! Awesome to see the Midwest getting some love from this channel!
Well then they should have a special area for black on black violent crime, just so the natives don't take it out on decent people.
@@gmarie701 And here comes the racism...
One of the improvements I hope will be done is moving the O'Hare MTA stop to be closer to the terminals--or even making more stops, like a loop around the terminals. From what I remember when I lived there, the walk to & from the gates & the subway stop is one of the longest airport walks I can think of.
CTA this isn’t NYC, our trains don’t get stuck underground
A direct hookup with Amtrak would also be great.
Lots of O'Hare users are interested in catching a train, but this is a challenge because making the connection between the airport and Union Station is so inconvenient.
@@TracyBrashaw it sounds nice but that is a massive undertaking as there are no Amtrak lines closer to O'Hare then Union Station
I have gone from O'Hare to Union Station a few times and it just feels like a really grim experience compared to what you find in a lot of large cities outside of the US.
Great stuff as always B1M! Recommend to look into Helsinki's new (almost complete) airport expansion as well
As a Chicagoan that looks into infrastructure, would be very surprised if it goes to schedule. The satellite hubs sure, but terminal 2 seems daunting. Who knows, maybe the teams involved pull off a miracle and do it. Either way looks exciting, digging studiogang’s design!
We will be lucky if its done before 2040 lol
Would be surprised if they don’t scale back the ambition of the design to save cost. It seems like with any major project like this that the designer has one vision and once the capital spend is more set and stone further down the line that’s when the scaling back happens. We’ll see
Nothing done in Chicago is on time and on budget. O'Hare is my backyard.
This place has alot of great potential. I have been traveling in and out of O’Hare for a good 20 years. For such a big city with such a sad crime problem. The folks that work there have always been in my opinion really nice.
Yes! Love this airport! I'm glad they got the people mover again!
I never knew that the airport had those kinda struggle. I just saw those numbers every year and said to myself, damn thats a big airport. But the change is more then needed. And as alwasy, what a great Clip from you guys! Ive loved it, thank you for that :)

@@sygneg7348 Thats what i ask myself too, dont know to be honest...
If you think the airport is bad, just wait until you see the rest of Chicago.
Is it $8 billion nicer though or are they stealing lol
As someone who works at Terminal 5, what crack are you smoking?
Led me to think
Yeah I skip terminal 5 and go back to terminal 1 when I came back from international flights
@@pointlessproductions5113 seems like WIP
Airports always fascinate me.
O'Hare breaks my neck every time I drive by. Hype for this upgrade. If it goes well, it'll be another incentive to stay in Chicago
Never been to Chicago in my life and I just watched a video about how nice their airport’s gonna be! 😄
The B1m is the my favourite you tube channel
It has been many years since I flown in/out of O'Hare. I remember it looked very old and dated. I am glad to see that they are finally doing a makeover.
Great video - my only wish is that you would have mentioned the architect of Terminal 2's name, Jeanne Gang. She's an incredible architect who is already behind some of Chicago's most interesting and gorgeous newer buildings (The Aqua Tower and The St. Regis Chicago). Her work is stunning and I can't wait to see more of it.
Agreed. Her work, seeing those magnificent buildings... they are EPIC works.
i hope the don‘t miss a good direct connection to the city with train or metro. reducing car traffic in us should be prioritised.
ORD is already well connected to transit. They don't have to worry about that.
@@acchaladka Yeah you're not going to take transit usually other than heading to or towards downtown. Do an Uber if you're going to another burb.
Both O'Hare and the smaller domestic Midway airport have metro lines running directly into downtown Chicago.
That's one priority cleared by both for 50 years now.
Both airports have train directly to the airports to downtown…
This is by far one of the best channels on UA-cam. Amazing content.
Don't you guys hate your current mayor lol
THe only thing he did that was noteworthy.
There is also a new Interstate (490) being constructed on the western edge. This will provide access to the new terminal and complete half of the Elgin-Ohare Expressway that was built in the 1980s
Construction of the Elgin-O’Hare began in 1991…..
Chicago! Love it! World Class City Proud Chicagoan-Italian 🇮🇹🍷
Very interesting video about this much needed project, but just one correction ... the widening of gates in T5 is to accommodate the new Boeing 777X series, not the Boeing 787 (which has been flying into and out of ORD using T5 for over a decade).
I laughed when they mentioned the B787 😂
I just find myself hitting like on all B1M video before I even watch them. Haven't been disappointed once....... Good Job as always guys.
Me, currently playing the new Airport DLC in Cities Skylines : WRITE THAT DOWN ! WRITE THAT DOWN !
I just flew out of O'hare airport last weekend and I will still say it is one of the best airports in the USA.
People who use O'Hare say that despite its huge size, it is a very well run airport.
We here in Berlin managed to get a slightly worse airport than we had before for just 8BN $. Also only took 14 years.
Jeeeesus christ when did that happen then? I heard that it did get an upgrade a little while back but wasn’t sure when it happened.
@@danielwhyatt3278 It's the Brandenburg Airport. The story is absolutely wild as hell.

Holy fook. The production quality on this one was on another level
I actually love live music in airports, in Charlotte, NC they had a live piano player and rocking chairs in the food court, made traveling feel like a pit stop in a mall and a little less stressful!
CLT Airport is also getting expanded as well, with a new landside terminal.
Thanks!
Very Nice! Next you guys should do a video about Portugal!
Egnyte is proud to support this massive infrastructure upgrade to help keep the project on time and running smoothly!
Another great video. Thank you🛬✈️🛩🛫🐳
You have no idea how happy this makes me, I’ve lived in Chicago my entire life and have wanted an o’Hare airport update for many years, it was nice when I was a kid in the 90s but it needs a modern architectural update!
Agreed, something more akin to European airports.
Another great video, thank you B1M for putting so much time into these videos!
I am actually a designer on this project (apart of the StudiORD team), apart of the terminal 5 expansion, the previous runway 9c construction and a aviation subject matter expert.... all this information is accurate but out dated. It is well together based on the available information but hope a updated video can be released in the future.
Why are you guys expanding instead of outright building a new airport at a new location? I think this whole country needs new everything!
Copy the Asian Airports. Put Robot helpers that hoover to people amd help them if they are lost or have questions. Look into Narita, Incheon and then one in Singapore. Think Outside the box that is North America. America is so behind everything
@@sweetfacelola5540 Ohare already has the massive land and space. Everything else in Chicago is already built. There's no room for another massive airport in the city. The only way would be to build a floating airport over Lake Michigan. Seems unreasonable when you can use the wrecking ball and build new on space you already have
@@justdrive5327 well what about Peotone International down south? Oh yeah, that's right- the democrats that run Chicago couldn't get kick backs on that so they essentially killed it
...mmm I all but lived at O'Hare airport for 2 1/2 years working many long hours to install all of the cabinets, back screens and counters for the new United Airlines terminal 1 and American Airlines in Terminal 2 - way back in 1987 !
That was fascinating especially the information about the things that O’Hare initiated. Transferred there a couple of years ago. It was better than i thought it would be but not as good as airports in Asia like Changi
O,Hare needs an Express only train from the airport to the Loop area and back again.Flew to O,Hare recently, just to visit my old hometown. And the expansion is coming along nicely.
Just flown from the new Delta terminal 5. Beautiful! The Hilton is aged too, rooms so vintage 😂
Yeah it's well over 40 years old the Hilton. Oh but the memories in that hotel over the years. If those walls could talk. Now T-5 I still hate. still the overall experience and narrow structure is still bad. Hopefully the new Terminal is just the start. Even the UA T-1 looks rather dated now. Least they got the run ways done.
O hare is the airport outside of london I most use. I just love how they decorate in the winter. I’ve never actually experienced any delays or issues there. But I’m excited to see how it all looks when it’s complete
I like your comment. Both O'Hare and nearby Rosemont have gorgeous Christmas lights displays every year!
@@CavingMonkey agreed
I like ORD, but agreed the international T-5 is pretty outdated. Definitely stuck in the early 90s and just adding more gates isn't going to change that. After the rest of projects are completed, they should probably just tare it down and get a do over
04:37 Love their incorporation of nature into the design! Nice open and airy feel!
@@carstarsarstenstesenn I agree. The update is needed. I suspect I would have a worse opinion if I had to layover there.
Looks you never used international terminal. It’s miserable
@@softinix9462 it's just an airport terminal I don't really get what there is to be so miserable about. Also the international terminal got some renovations a couple years ago

I remember watching this a few months ago and now I have just finished my internship with the CCA on THIS EXACT PROJECT, life has some amazing ways in working lmfao
I have never realized how old O'Hare looks until I recently travelled from O'Hare to LaGuardia... What a shock.

LaGuardia was crap, but glad to hear it's finally upgraded
I was luckily participated in the expandation of Mauritius Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, always great experience working and seeing the great project been built.
A nice upgrade for the Windy City

I work and practically live there. I was in the conference room when they were talking about it and met mayor Lori E. Lightfoot and senator.
This will be interesting...I like that so many major US airports like JFK, LAX, O'hare, Newark, and LaGuardia are going through massive upgrades to modernize/future-proof them
Glad to see this upgrade is happening! It's mind-boggling to think it's taken 16 years so far and will still take another 5.

San Antonio remains one of the biggest cities of the country without the airport infrastructure. That has effected its economy and downtown culture/ development, with some companies like AT&T relocating their headquarters due to lack of direct flights.
You guys will be alright because you go a nice river walk.
As a Houstonian, San Antonio deserves so much more investment in infrastructure whether in public transport or airports, y’all are the 7th largest city and the second largest in Texas. If Austin who’s smaller is getting developed, why can’t SA? I love y’all
Yeah, I'm actually surprised to see how small San Antonio Airport is, compared to similar sized cities like Philadelphia and San Diego.

What was that towards the end ? Pretty deceptive way to place your Sponsor, making it look like O'Hare Airport was using that unkown Turkish App.
I have no idea why but I always watch your videos and I watch the entire thing... such good content, thank you.
The new Terminal 7 was designed to look like a foul ball at Wrigley Field.
Just what I needed to start the day
Love you brother
It's worth noting that the decrepit Terminal 5 mentioned here is the international terminal and likely the first impression many foreigners will get of the US. It's like a ragged bus terminal inside, it's good they're fixing it.
I can see my house at 0:08 💀
I used to work here as a PSA when I was 19, pushing passengers in wheel chairs. Was a fun and interesting work place.
They wouldn't do the river model unless it was practical. It allows for more "surface area" if you will, around the "branches"
@@supermarionintendo3879 more than a square or rectangular building? And it’s bound to increase the cost surely? I don’t know, but I’m interested.
@@georgecaplin9075 Well if you think about a 6x8 rectangle, the perimeter is 28. But if you split that up into three rectangles, each 2x8 and 20 perimeter, that's 60 total. And the area is equal so cost would be relatively similar.
