Has anyone walked to the newer terminal 5 gates recently? Prepare. I’m a marathon runner and that arduous march to our Icelandair flight was like walking to Kenosha WI. Poooooor planning for humans to use the space. No trains. Minimal moving sidewalks with some out of order. Whoever planned that layout…..fail.
Absolutely agree, it's asinine. At a brisk pace it's over 10 minutes to the terminal core. And if you're there at the same time as any of the larger international flights, the single narrow corridor is horribly clogged. I can't believe anyone would consider this to be world class.
Waiting in line to clear customs is terrible they need to go down to Houston international airport and watch the process of “Clearing “ customs. More larger bathrooms, larger elevators with people who are handicap to use wheelchairs. more location of these facilities.
Same. Landed after a 10 hour flight and then had to hike for about 30 minutes to get to customs. It felt temporary, like walking through a utility tunnel.
This looks great, also worth noting that the CTA Blue line that connects to O’Hare is getting brand new rail cars and is in line for several station upgrades along the way to downtown. So in a few years flying to Chicago via O’Hare should be a totally modern experience
They got a lot of homeless people on the Blue Line trains. Travelers don't want to deal with smelly, potentially violent homeless people urinating on the trains. They have to create homes for our homeless Americans.
Heya. So the city and state wanted the satellite concourses built first to preserve gate capacity while terminal 2 is being demolished. In 23, the airlines wanted the global terminal to be completed first because they see it as the most important part of the project and have realistic concerns about the budget overruns if the satellite concourses were built first. From what I understand, they've come to a compromise and will build one satellite concourse then begin construction on the global terminal. Once it's finished, they'll begin construction on the second satellite.
Yeah I was going to say. They aren't starting the global terminal until the Satellite 1 is finished in 2027-2028. Gonna be a long time till this project is finished
I’m also ORD-based, and the worst is when people just stand still on the moving walkway, blocking others who are trying to get through quickly. It’s frustrating when people aren’t aware of the proper etiquette, which can lead to congestion and delays or, even worse, shouting matches.
@@UnkleGaga There are two moving walkways each way (well, when they're working). There should be a sign that says, if you want to stand, use the right one. Right now, it's a guessing game wondering if the family of six in front of me will walk or stand.
Very exciting stuff to say the least as ohare is my home airport. It’s super cool to see what these projects will look like when completed. It reminds me of airports like Helsinki, Doha and Singapore a bit. Okay maybe not quite on the level of Singapore, but you know what I mean. Better late than never for sure. Terminal 5 can get insanely crowded from when I’ve flown in or out of there. Can’t wait to see the day when it’s all completed and the ribbon is cut and mark my words it will be. Safe travels mate!
Agree. I've lived overseas and the airports in Singapore, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Shanghai, Beijing, etc...are more advanced - mostly because they were built more recently. Even places like Mumbai and Delhi have relatively new facilities. So yes, looking forward to seeing the improvements.
Ohare is one of the few hubs left. Every project I have experienced is behind the timeline, over cost, or both. Probably the hardest part is buying the land for expansion.

Life long resident of IL, and long time lover of O'Hare. Honestly I'm glad they've done something substantial to upgrade the airport. Though they really must deal with the mobility issue within the airport. I tend to be very anti A380 upgrades... they seem like a dying fad already, but I am glad to see the additional satellite dedicated to regional flights. When Boeing started eliminating model options, I felt like UA was not really finding a small body fleet to match demand. With the improvement with engine tech they can use more Embraer and smaller Airbus.
I hope the new global terminal or at least T1 gets a USCBP facility. It would take a lot of pressure off of T5 and would let United and its star alliance partners take full advantage of T1 and would reduce turnaround times as well (Swiss, Lufthansa, ANA, Copa, Austrian, LOT, etc all use T5 for arrivals and ANA and DLH use T1 for departures) not having to taxi from T5 to T1 would be nice
The plan, and this is discussed in the video, is that the Global Terminal will have a FIS facility in addition to the FIS in T5. Star Alliance, Oneworld, and non alliance airlines will use the global terminal. SkyTeam international will be at T5.
US laws require you to recheck baggage and reclear security no matter what after arriving to the US (preclearance being the exception), but having this happen adjacent to terminals 1 and 2 will be better than the current set-up.
@@D00MerJohn Europe, depending on the origin, you may have to go through security again, but your bag is typically checked through to your final destination if you are flying under one reservation. Canada and the USA seem to be the only two countries I know where this is an issue, but I think even Canada is making some policy changes.

A new dedicated high speed rail line using the B&OCT Altenheim Sub to downtown is crucial. An airport station could be constructed either in one of the former rental car lots or in long term parking lot E. The tram and underground walkways could connect easily. ORD remains the best airport in the world. It's expansion and a dedicated HST line make it even better.
A run of twenty miles means very short stretches at full speed. Regular speed rail is just fine, and could do it in 20 minutes with grade separation. What is needed is dedicated track and high service levels, not HSR.
We certainly need better train connections and rail to surrounding areas. Rail could handle of lot of the commuter traffic and let airlines concentrate on long hauls. There always seems to be billions for air, but not much for rail.
3:03 it's not as bad as you are saying. You can clear customs in terminal 5, stay in terminal 5, and board a bus that will drive you across the airport to Terminal 1 and 3 from 10am to 8pm. At terminal 5 it's there is a doorway next to the Delta skyclub.
The buses are inside security, but currently they don't start operating until 11:30 a.m. Also, clearing customs requires leaving security, then doubling back through security to get the bus.
As someone that has difficulty walking distances, that satellite terminal is ridiculous without a people mover. I thought Dallas airport was a long walk.......
Once Southwest finally get their delayed Maxes, I would to see more flights to their focus cities from O’Hare. Maybe freeing up gates in 5 could be an open opportunity for that airline.
1) I'm just happy that there are no more homeless people in the airport. My kids were once accosted by an unstable man who was yelling at them at the top of their lungs. The security never showed up, and I had to essentially body check the dude while my wife got the kids out of there. Then a long conversation with the kids about not being scared and how mental illness or substance abuse or both can affect people in a manner where they can't stop themselves. 2) Once the satellite concourses are done, that Terminal 1 trip will get so long. I already feel lucky when my flights are out of Concourse B rather than C. I can't imagine the dread I'll have for walking a mile to Satellite 2 for a domestic flight.
If you look at the image of the satellite concourses at 5:42, you'll notice that the underground connection indicated extends further west, beyond the proposed concourse 2. In the 2000s, initial planning work was done for a west entrance to O'Hare. At the time the current layout for O'Hare was done, it was far north-west of the population center of the metro area. Since then, there has been a great deal of expansion of the metro area, with a lot more people living west and northwest of the city center, thus making a west entrance useful, as it would split up some of the traffic going in and out of the airport. It would generally be located where Thorndale intersects into York Rd on the airport property and that extension of the underground connector would lead directly to it. It's far from certain that this west entrance development will happen, but it's an indication that the planning for these concourses had that option in mind.
I concur. I’ve talked to an engineer working on the 490 project and there is def a masterplan for a western access that will most likely use a subway train to get to the concourses. But obviously there’s no time table for when that will be.

The new connector tunnel that will go out to Satellites 1 & 2 was planned to be big enough to accommodate a future people-mover/light-rail. I'm not sure if that's still in the plans.
if any airport(s) in Chicago need a "Facelift" its Midway And "Chicago" Gary. O'Hare has been getting "worked on" literally my entire life and I'm only 24 years old. Traffic is ALWAYS backed up near O'Hare or anywhere near Rosemont for that matter or should I say CHICAGO-Rosemont gotta love how Chicago just slaps its name on everything in the general area. I understand how with Midway were working with limited space but honestly, I feel like we really missed the mark with the sizing of Midway I would say the average Chicagoan would prefer Midway over sitting thru the traffic of getting to O'Hare anyways... so why not just expand it out a little ? I'm sure the residents that live directly near Midway are tired of the noise anyways just buy their houses out expand the airport and do something with all those damn vacant buildings over there. As for Gary just change the name to Chicagoland Air Base because realistically who's flying into Gary lmfao it basically only gets used for the air and water show like come on now 😂😂if you want ppl and even airlines to consider that dump you gotta build it up and give ppl a reason to want to fly there over Midway/O'Hare. Add a highspeed rail line to Downtown Chicago. Add places to shop and eat as well as tourist destinations. The entirety of the metro area north of I-290, which is most of the people, and why O'Hare is orders of magnitude larger than Midway, would much rather go to O'Hare than Midway. It's so much closer. Also, obviously, you still have to go through all the O'Hare traffic to get past it on the way to Midway. I can get to O'Hare in 30 minutes or less. It would be double that to get to Midway. It took a decade to get the people that lived around O'Hare to sell their homes for the last O'Hare expansion back in the early aughts. The people around Midway would not willingly sell their homes to move. They bought those homes with Midway already there.
Terminal 5 extension has moving walkways the entire length of the hallway, just not in the larger room areas (the center hub and end room being the main exceptions). You can see one of the walkways in the video.
how about a revamp of customs. they throw everyone into one big line. how about some separation for US citizens VS other entering countries? waited about an hour the other day coming back from germany

Well, most passengers are connecting, as with any hub. But the Chicago MSA has 9.4 million people and is a major business and tourist travel destination too.
A world class airport yes, but no high speed rail service to the Chicago downtown business district. The CTA Blue Line is slow, at best. Typical Chicago politics.
i just wonder if the new satellite concourse that will be by concourse C will be named concourse A because the first concourse starts at concourse B and the new concourse connecting to concourse C will be named concourse D or vice versa where the new international united concourse will be A and the new satellite concourse will be D instead making the new united international concourse concourse A.
Satellite 1 is really just an extension of Concourse C so I expect it'll still be called that. Satellite 2's name remains TBD (if it's even built) but they could easily call it Concourse D (which doesn't currently exist anyways) and avoid having to rename any existing concourses.
Way back in the 1960s, there was a Concourse A that was part of the original ORD terminal. It probably makes sense to keep that designation reserved if ever there is a terminal/concourse expansion north or east of Concourse B.

How did United and AA let all their international flights arrive at Terminal 5 and make connecting passengers journies so horrendous. Surprising there has never been FIS capabilities at Terminal 1 or 3. ORD is the biggest and most international airport between LAX & JFK, it should have more than one FIS station.
This is an extremely common thing at most airports. ORD is not special at all in that aspect. I once connected in Phoenix, and even though I was making a domestic to domestic connection, because the flights were in different terminals I had to leave security etc. at least at O’Hare, all Terminals are connected behind security. So it makes transferring from a domestic to international flight very easy.
The answer when Terminal 5 was built there wasn’t as many international flights out of ORD. Most US airports including JFK and LAX have only 1 international wing. The problem at Ohare is that terminal 5 isn’t in a good location. Also the backend of Terminal 2 is a dark, dank dungeon.
@@TheSjuris ORD is unique as there are two hub airlines. While until 1990 Northwest and TWA operated the flights to London and Tokyo that changed when United and AA acquired and started flying to Europe and Asia. When United opened Terminal One they should have included an FIS station in their plans, if they didn't that is poor planning. AA is in a different situation since they are much closer to T5. The day when ORD need more than one FIS arrived 20 years ago but better late than never.
@@paulreynolds7000 When United took over terminal 1 they weren’t as big as they are now. They didn’t have international flights then. Again JFK and LAX have only one FIS facility as do most airports in the US and Canada.
@@TheSjuris JFK today has FIS station at T1, T4, T5, T7 & T8. LAX has three at Delta T2, Tom Bradley and United. Check your facts when JFK last had only ONE FIS was when 707 were around.
Thank you for sharing! O’Hare is almost too broken up to save. Add it to the horrible travel to and from the airport and getting between terminals…I avoid it at all costs and will continue to do so.
@@_Diana_S Not nearly as efficient as ATL. The original airport design did not allow for efficient expansion, simple as that. IND has GREAT parking and simple navigation through the terminals. ATL's tram is 100% better than ORD's hodgepodge. Parking is a nightmare unless you want to pay ridiculous prices and arrive 4-5 hours prior to your flight, specifically on high traffic days. I park for free at BLM and PIA, arrive 45 minutes prior to flight, and check in is a breeze. I have colleagues from Chicago that drive down to Bloomington just for the convivence. The ~$200 in flight cost, minimal drive time, and connections is cheaper than the hassle and costs of dealing with ORD.
@@KylanMcAfee they will surely use part of the global terminal to expand operations. The other satellite gates idk yet if they’ll be using them. Like I said briefly T3 is also being renovated that would renovate gate space. AA also isn’t as big in Chicago as they once were meaning they’ll likely not expand as much in the future, therefore no need for so many more gates as opposed to UA.
When it is completed in 2032 they will come up with a new 2040 plan and say future growth needs more gates. Eventually they will run out of land to build on.....then what?

The city runs on patronage and always has. Nothing gets done unless money or favors grease the skids. O’hare has been a giant jobs program since it’s inception decades ago.
C4 is my gate. I work for united and I feel horrible our passengers have to walk a mile down the jet bridge to get on the aircraft… a regional aircraft ofc not a mainline 🙄🙄
Maybe so, but this article doesn’t address uber, so I think this it doesn’t applies in this case. 90% of ORD passengers are passing through the terminal, not leaving the terminal.
Terminal 5 is garbage. Now they are building a hideous parking garage in front of the facade which was the only nice part. The main terminal also has a hulking rusting garage as well. Why spend money on a beautiful global terminal with a massive ugly concrete parking garage in front of it
Airports are vital and Chicago is a international hub.... just needs to add more room that it long was held back from for decades literally for more runways to terminals by those living around the airport. Finally they lifted that denial.....

It’s a half mile from the farthest M gate to customs. I’ve done it a few times now.
It is crazy but doe to some existing renovations they haven’t been able to put travellators yet. But they will hopefully do that soon enough

Ty for mentioning the need for moving walkways. It makes me crazy how long the walks are here. I’m ORD based and fly every other week.

Global terminal is only for United and American and its partners. All non alliance will still use terminal 5

It’s honestly kinda annoying mainly because they expect you to finish the fueling at t5 with only about a 45-50 minute time frame

The new connector tunnel that will go out to Satellites 1 & 2 was planned to be big enough to accommodate a future people-mover/light-rail. I'm not sure if that's still in the plans.
if any airport(s) in Chicago need a "Facelift" its Midway And "Chicago" Gary. O'Hare has been getting "worked on" literally my entire life and I'm only 24 years old. Traffic is ALWAYS backed up near O'Hare or anywhere near Rosemont for that matter or should I say CHICAGO-Rosemont gotta love how Chicago just slaps its name on everything in the general area. I understand how with Midway were working with limited space but honestly, I feel like we really missed the mark with the sizing of Midway I would say the average Chicagoan would prefer Midway over sitting thru the traffic of getting to O'Hare anyways... so why not just expand it out a little ? I'm sure the residents that live directly near Midway are tired of the noise anyways just buy their houses out expand the airport and do something with all those damn vacant buildings over there. As for Gary just change the name to Chicagoland Air Base because realistically who's flying into Gary lmfao it basically only gets used for the air and water show like come on now 😂😂if you want ppl and even airlines to consider that dump you gotta build it up and give ppl a reason to want to fly there over Midway/O'Hare. Add a highspeed rail line to Downtown Chicago. Add places to shop and eat as well as tourist destinations. Realistically if you fly into Gary your gonna be greeted by empty concrete jungles abandoned buildings and the literal smell of poverty lmao
The entirety of the metro area north of I-290, which is most of the people, and why O'Hare is orders of magnitude larger than Midway, would much rather go to O'Hare than Midway. It's so much closer. Also, obviously, you still have to go through all the O'Hare traffic to get past it on the way to Midway. I can get to O'Hare in 30 minutes or less. It would be double that to get to Midway. It took a decade to get the people that lived around O'Hare to sell their homes for the last O'Hare expansion back in the early aughts. The people around Midway would not willingly sell their homes to move. They bought those homes with Midway already there.

Terminal 5 extension has moving walkways the entire length of the hallway, just not in the larger room areas (the center hub and end room being the main exceptions). You can see one of the walkways in the video.

After living in ATL and it being my home airport, I’m very spoiled especially when I fly into ORD. It’s sooo far behind for being a world airport.

The distance of the satellite terminals from baggage claim is horrendous, was really upset there was no walkway when I was partially immobile 😡

Well, most passengers are connecting, as with any hub. But the Chicago MSA has 9.4 million people and is a major business and tourist travel destination too.

i just wonder if the new satellite concourse that will be by concourse C will be named concourse A because the first concourse starts at concourse B and the new concourse connecting to concourse C will be named concourse D or vice versa where the new international united concourse will be A and the new satellite concourse will be D instead making the new united international concourse concourse A.
Satellite 1 is really just an extension of Concourse C so I expect it'll still be called that. Satellite 2's name remains TBD (if it's even built) but they could easily call it Concourse D (which doesn't currently exist anyways) and avoid having to rename any existing concourses.
Way back in the 1960s, there was a Concourse A that was part of the original ORD terminal. It probably makes sense to keep that designation reserved if ever there is a terminal/concourse expansion north or east of Concourse B.
I just got back from Madrid and even though I travel frequently this was my first time ever in this new terminal, the walk to customs was absolutely unacceptable like wtf

UPS operates out of Rockford. Most cargo flights operate at night. There is no need for Peotone.

How did United and AA let all their international flights arrive at Terminal 5 and make connecting passengers journies so horrendous. Surprising there has never been FIS capabilities at Terminal 1 or 3. ORD is the biggest and most international airport between LAX & JFK, it should have more than one FIS station.
This is an extremely common thing at most airports. ORD is not special at all in that aspect. I once connected in Phoenix, and even though I was making a domestic to domestic connection, because the flights were in different terminals I had to leave security etc. at least at O’Hare, all Terminals are connected behind security. So it makes transferring from a domestic to international flight very easy.
The answer when Terminal 5 was built there wasn’t as many international flights out of ORD. Most US airports including JFK and LAX have only 1 international wing. The problem at Ohare is that terminal 5 isn’t in a good location. Also the backend of Terminal 2 is a dark, dank dungeon.
@@TheSjuris ORD is unique as there are two hub airlines. While until 1990 Northwest and TWA operated the flights to London and Tokyo that changed when United and AA acquired and started flying to Europe and Asia. When United opened Terminal One they should have included an FIS station in their plans, if they didn't that is poor planning. AA is in a different situation since they are much closer to T5. The day when ORD need more than one FIS arrived 20 years ago but better late than never.
@@paulreynolds7000 When United took over terminal 1 they weren’t as big as they are now. They didn’t have international flights then. Again JFK and LAX have only one FIS facility as do most airports in the US and Canada.
@@TheSjuris JFK today has FIS station at T1, T4, T5, T7 & T8. LAX has three at Delta T2, Tom Bradley and United. Check your facts when JFK last had only ONE FIS was when 707 were around.

Thank you for sharing! O’Hare is almost too broken up to save. Add it to the horrible travel to and from the airport and getting between terminals…I avoid it at all costs and will continue to do so.
What's wrong with getting between terminals? There is an automated train connecting all of them, it is pretty easy to use.
@@_Diana_S Not nearly as efficient as ATL. The original airport design did not allow for efficient expansion, simple as that. IND has GREAT parking and simple navigation through the terminals. ATL's tram is 100% better than ORD's hodgepodge. Parking is a nightmare unless you want to pay ridiculous prices and arrive 4-5 hours prior to your flight, specifically on high traffic days. I park for free at BLM and PIA, arrive 45 minutes prior to flight, and check in is a breeze. I have colleagues from Chicago that drive down to Bloomington just for the convivence. The ~$200 in flight cost, minimal drive time, and connections is cheaper than the hassle and costs of dealing with ORD.

@@KylanMcAfee they will surely use part of the global terminal to expand operations. The other satellite gates idk yet if they’ll be using them. Like I said briefly T3 is also being renovated that would renovate gate space. AA also isn’t as big in Chicago as they once were meaning they’ll likely not expand as much in the future, therefore no need for so many more gates as opposed to UA.
$5.00 for the new terminal, the rest is kickbacks to the politicians and unions.
The train station in down town Chicago looks more convent and easier to travel by train. (whose in that big of a hurry?)
When it is completed in 2032 they will come up with a new 2040 plan and say future growth needs more gates. Eventually they will run out of land to build on.....then what?

The city runs on patronage and always has. Nothing gets done unless money or favors grease the skids. O’hare has been a giant jobs program since it’s inception decades ago.
That place is a giant sh*t show ! As a pilot for a major airline I hate going in there. Why don’t they fix the damn taxiways first ?
I've noticed that too -- when you land there, the journey isn't over. Another 10-15 minutes just to park.
C4 is my gate. I work for united and I feel horrible our passengers have to walk a mile down the jet bridge to get on the aircraft… a regional aircraft ofc not a mainline 🙄🙄

Maybe so, but this article doesn’t address uber, so I think this it doesn’t applies in this case. 90% of ORD passengers are passing through the terminal, not leaving the terminal.

Terminal 5 is garbage. Now they are building a hideous parking garage in front of the facade which was the only nice part. The main terminal also has a hulking rusting garage as well. Why spend money on a beautiful global terminal with a massive ugly concrete parking garage in front of it

Airports are vital and Chicago is a international hub.... just needs to add more room that it long was held back from for decades literally for more runways to terminals by those living around the airport. Finally they lifted that denial.....
