Some notes I wanted to make about your video. 1. 2:10- Not all terminals are operated by airlines- some are operated by private companies. T4 being operated by JFKIAT, T1 will be operated by NTO, T6/7 will be operated by JMP. 2. 2:23- Saying airlines can never divert to another terminal is also inaccurate since all terminals do their best to support each other in times of need. T4 accepts flights from other airlines/terminals not scheduled to be there on a regular basis. They will also accept flights on an emergency basis if necessary. The main issue is the ground handling staff may not have the necessary man power/equipment to support an operation in another terminal if they are not based out of it as it'll stretch them thin and take time for them to get there.
It's understandable to think that starting fresh might be easier, but it's not technically feasible to completely rebuild JFK Airport from scratch. Since it's a busy, operational airport with continuous flights and passengers, any renovation has to be carefully phased to ensure minimal disruption to ongoing operations. That's why the current $19 billion plan focuses on renovating and modernizing the existing infrastructure while keeping the airport functional.
It's been a sh!thole as a permanent construction site for the 30+ years I've travelled through it. But I agree, although probably better to find somewhere else first, then shutdown the old one.

I know it's controversial to say but I prefer EWR aka Newark Liberty Airport in every way... It's older and smaller yes, but it's also much better connected to the metro and existing railways and its adding a PATH extension and upgradings its airport station all while rebuilding the older space-age 60's terminals into more modern facilities... Yes there are separate terminals but at least there's only 3 of 'em and the airtrain links them along one line...
You should do a video on the Concourse D renovation at Atlanta airport. The concourse is staying open while the massive expansion sections are being built on site and moved a mile into place without effecting air and concourse traffic. It’s a fascinating process.
And even after they do all this, the best way to get from Manhattan to JFK will still be the fixed price for a taxi. How pathetic is that? Even worse, to get from one terminal to another still requires you to go through security again. More waiting, more being treated as a presumed criminal, more wandings. The problem is not the terminals. The problem is that air travel has become a hate-filled, anger-and-anxiety-inducing experience. Why not fix that first?
The new LaGuardia is amazing, one of the best airports ever to fly into. And with the 10 minute walk to the free express bus to connect with the subway, its way quicker to get to Midtown than JFK ever was. Still have to fight through an intentionally crowded shopping mall when leaving to get to my gate though.
The use of waterways for bringing in construction materials / equipment is smart. Best to avoid the Van Wyck, even if bad weather could present a problem once and awhile.
As someone that’s through JFK every couple of weeks or so it’s not really that bad. I’m usually starting/ending my journey there but a lot of JFK’s problems from a passenger perspective (except airside terminal transfer) aren’t really JFK design problems, rather just big airport problems… For O&D passengers having 5 smaller terminals has its benefits over a smaller number of mega terminals.

$19 billion?! How can that even be possible? That’s the cost for the entire Victoria line in London! Or half the cost that Paris is spending on their 120miles and 68 metro expansion!
Paris is spending billions to host the summer Olympics including over a billion to clean up the polluted River Seine to use for water events so it’s all relative.
Building on top of an active airport as busy as JFK is expensive. Everything has to be planned out and done in stages without disrupting too much traffic. Lots of people and equipment end up sitting around waiting for the right moment. But also, it's NYC. Everything costs several times what it should.
There were actually 9 terminals, the current Terminal 8 was built where the old #8 and #9 sat. The new Terminal 6 is replacing the old #7 and the new Terminal 1 will cover the space of old #1, #2, . I do hope they remember everything when this is completed since it should be 4 terminals, not 8 with missing numbers!
When you have a separate corporation just for the Terminal 1 project (the CEO is featured in the video), you know there's a lot of overhead just for the corporate bureaucracy. As usual, shareholder value (or return on investment in general if it's not a publicly traded company) is the #1 priority.
I thought connecting the terminals and making it easy to get in and out of was the main issue. Seems they haven’t made that the main priority. More trains, and connect all the terminals together. ??
Fun fact, Idlewild was originally designed as a military airport. Jay Downer was the civil engineer. As an aside, JD also designed the Bronx Parkway, which inspired the Autobahn and ultimately the Interstate Highway system. I never met JD, but inherited is signet ring. Thanks for the update!
I question how good this new airport will be. For example, the new Terminal 1 gets 23 gates all which can handle A380s, a plane that has been discontinued and won't be operating much past the next decade. So when it fully opens in 2030, the gates will not be at maximum capacity as the gates will service smaller planes then they can handle. The Terminals remaining after the redesign will be Terminal 1 (new), Terminal 4 (already open and finished), Terminal 5 (redesigned and expanded with 6), and Terminal 8 (redesigned, merged with Terminal 7). Four terminals in the end with 151 gates, up from 128. AirTrain will still run to all the terminals and the roads will be rerouted to make it potentially easier to get around by car as well.
These investment sums are crazy... Even on a per-passenger basis, $19b across 62.5m passengers is $304 per passenger in one year - or $30 per passenger on a ten-year basis.
I traveled to the area for the first time in my life recently. A few people on the street made passing marks about how it was luck we flew into Newark.
It was originally named New York International Airport as shown in the visual but was commonly called Idlewild due to that being the name of its location.

All nice and stuff, but what is and will be missing: Good Public Transport. 20 km (13 mi) between JFK and Manhattan and it still takes an hour by AirTrain + MTA. It won't need crazy high-tech solutions like a Maglev or Hyper Loop. Standard rail with 160 km/h (100 mph), a limited number of stops (e.g. Broadway Junction + Atlantic Av/Barclays Ctr) and it should be easily done in 20-30 min. Or just reactivate the old _Rockaway Beach Branch_ between LIRR and Howard Beach, a cut-and-cover tunnel parallel to RWY 13R/31L, arriving between T1 and T4, done.
I've always been a fan of LaGuardia because I was once a broke college student and you can easily just walk into the airport or take the Q70 for free to get to other transit links. No need to pay for a taxi or train ticket like you need to get to JFK.

It's about time JFK gets a massive upgrade. The Port Authority just opened a brand new Terminal A for us at Newark Airport and it was well-overdue for a replacement! Now its time for all 3 airports to be completely modernized and not stuck in the 1980s anymore!

Fred, hi from Alberta (Calgary) Canada. I had no idea JFK wasn't keeping pace, with so much attention on the redevelopment of LaGuardia one just assumes JFK is a given.. Our Intl airport passenger volume is 20M respectable and growing again (Canadian Market) but obviously not in the JFK universe. Just the annual wear and tear on JFK's facilities neglect one year and your behind by five actually. So its great to see one of the worlds great Intl airports receiving the capital investment and redevelopment it apparently requires. After all expectations come with being the Big 🍎. Great episode always feeds the construction geek in me and provides a worldly perspective no other pure construction site can come close too. Always look forward to more, amazing topics (empty super tall's of NYK's Millionaires Row a favorite) presentation and above all you are clearly knowledgeable and passionate about construction. Thanks
I don't think this project should be such a high priority. JFK's terminals aren't too shabby, the runways are already near capacity without space for further expansion, and this will just incentivize the airport to schedule more flights than it can reasonably handle. Newark should be a higher priority for a megaproject, since it actually has a path to increase its capacity, and the solution needs a lot of investment to work. If EWR reconstructed its terminals mid-field, they could squeeze in a 3rd, independently operated parallel runway (greater than 1310 meter separation) that would increase overall flight capacity by up to 70%. By going with a terminal layout similar to Charles De Gaulle's Terminal 2E, the reconstructed EWR could go with a design that combines the efficiency of the concourse layout with the convenience of the pier layout. This would also leave space for US Route 9 and an air train to be rerouted directly through the terminals, allowing for better traffic flow, and a zero-transfer connection to Penn Station.
Parking garages are dinosaurs. At LAX, SFO and SJC International airports less than half of the garage is full on any given day. It would be better to focus on larger pickup and dropoff areas or connections to transit.
I LOVE JFK. TWA Hotel is very cool. And T4 is arguably their best terminal - well laid out, nice amenities, awesome for people watching. And with LIRR connected to Grand Central, getting there by rail is simpler and faster now.
In my experience, each terminal at JFK is like a different airport. I flew from JetBlues terminal (I think terminal 5) and it was great, I loved it. Then I flew from Deltas terminal (I think it was 4?) and it was not a comparable experience at all. And driving in and out of the airport was insane at times. This will be a good thing for the airport.
We need go more in depth on the design firms who made this vision possible. Corgan and Gensler deserve some recognition, also feel the audience would enjoy learning a bit more about the design side a little more in depth.
So still gonna be terminal 1, 4, 5/6, and 8 with that land side AirTrain connecting them? How is this an improvement for the rundown terminal 4 and 8 and overall disconnectedness?
A major thing the Port Authority should consider making more affordable parking spaces available. Most drivers choose to hang around or idle right by the terminals o nearby to avoid paying for parking at the airport, thus creating traffic jams. They should also have affordable long term parking available right by the terminals.
Judging by how successful LGAs renovation has been, I can actually say that I have faith for this to turn out well, if not for the fact that it will probably be delayed

Seems like that barge solution could be adapted to provide a more direct and efficient means of ferrying passengers to and from locations upstate without all the transfers and hassle of NYC traffic.
Seems like remove the whole old infrastructure and rebuild would be the smart way
It's understandable to think that starting fresh might be easier, but it's not technically feasible to completely rebuild JFK Airport from scratch. Since it's a busy, operational airport with continuous flights and passengers, any renovation has to be carefully phased to ensure minimal disruption to ongoing operations. That's why the current $19 billion plan focuses on renovating and modernizing the existing infrastructure while keeping the airport functional.
@@hanochkurian5933 i am sure they just build something intermediate to tear it down and develop real estate in 50-80 Years.
And probably cheaper, which is likely why they didn’t do it.
It's been a sh!thole as a permanent construction site for the 30+ years I've travelled through it.
But I agree, although probably better to find somewhere else first, then shutdown the old one.
@@nezbrun872where are you going to find that much land? The acquisition costs would be insanely high. Or you could build land in the water, which also would be insanely expensive
Yk we could use a direct airport rail link from Grand central. No, LIRR doesn’t count cuz we have to switch to the air train 😒
Oh hey I'm working on this project. Didn't think BIM would do a video on it!
Good luck my friend 🙂
Good to hear. BTW, does "new shops, restaurants, and upgrades" at Terminal 8 mean they are removing the moving walkways to do that?
Amen.
BYE FELICIA!!!! Don't come back any time soon. We won't miss you.
Sorry, we're out of tissues.
Worst thing is getting to JFK. Belt Parkway is always stuck. Coming from NJ is a nightmare.
Great video. I think JFK needs more public transport connections.
Loved the retro photos / clips though!
The use of waterways for bringing in construction materials / equipment is smart. Best to avoid the Van Wyck, even if bad weather could present a problem once and awhile.
Did I miss it, or was there no mention of any updated rail connections to Manhattan or anywhere else for that matter?
As someone that’s through JFK every couple of weeks or so it’s not really that bad. I’m usually starting/ending my journey there but a lot of JFK’s problems from a passenger perspective (except airside terminal transfer) aren’t really JFK design problems, rather just big airport problems…
For O&D passengers having 5 smaller terminals has its benefits over a smaller number of mega terminals.
Can you make a video about the Francis Scott key bridge Collapse situation in Baltimore, Maryland and I 95 bridge collapse situation in Norwalk, Connecticut
And the Washington Bridge failure in RI.
I see a theme here.

@mfaizsyahmi Yup! Also, with a collab with RoadGuyRob 👍🏾
If you guys get a chance, you should really consider looking at the temple square reconstruction project in Salt Lake City. It’s been a massive, multi year undertaking and I’d love to get some behind the scenes info through you guys!
Keep it up! You guys do great work!
Much more expensive to build in this part of the country especially.

They only said it once, no repeat

550,000 square metres? How deep?
When volume is a measure of distance.
Why does it have to cost 19 billion? I bet most of that is padding wallets, and not being spent on the actual project.
When you have a separate corporation just for the Terminal 1 project (the CEO is featured in the video), you know there's a lot of overhead just for the corporate bureaucracy. As usual, shareholder value (or return on investment in general if it's not a publicly traded company) is the #1 priority.
@@fosterfuchs It's sickening. When will we overcome our selfishness? Along with other things, like malice.
@@zimmerman1031good luck!
I thought connecting the terminals and making it easy to get in and out of was the main issue. Seems they haven’t made that the main priority.
More trains, and connect all the terminals together. ??
Have I said how much I really like this channel; not to mention the host. He's F'ing awesome!
A very enjoyable watch as always 👍
Fun fact, Idlewild was originally designed as a military airport. Jay Downer was the civil engineer. As an aside, JD also designed the Bronx Parkway, which inspired the Autobahn and ultimately the Interstate Highway system. I never met JD, but inherited is signet ring. Thanks for the update!
2:09 originally had 9 disconnected terminals not 6
No change to runway configuration will mean even more terrible congestion airside when there supposedly will be 100 million pax
550000m2 of concrete? That’s none then. Surely they mean m3?
There are no pure A380 gates. They might have a second floor jetway. Other aircraft can generally use the main level gates.
Pretty sure you meant m³, not m² as a measuring unit of concrete.
These investment sums are crazy... Even on a per-passenger basis, $19b across 62.5m passengers is $304 per passenger in one year - or $30 per passenger on a ten-year basis.
Given the current inflation rate, a small Starbucks coffee will probably cost $30 in the new terminals.
Been there, took nearly 2 hours to get out and catch a cab....
I traveled to the area for the first time in my life recently. A few people on the street made passing marks about how it was luck we flew into Newark.
It was originally named New York International Airport as shown in the visual but was commonly called Idlewild due to that being the name of its location.
Should be called, Marilyn Monroe Airport. At least she lived here! Kennedy was a bum and only cheated on Jackie here!!
*1) They need GREAT DESIGNS. (Presently it’s underwhelming)*
*2) They need to SIMPLIFY the whole thing (and consider it holistically - - regardless of the cost)*
@5.55 lol that there's no covering between the EV charging and the terminal walkway. Just what you want in New York weather!
Kinda like what they’re doing here at LAX. What a giant project that seems to never end.
Ah yes, biometrics "for a seamless experience." When something is free, you are the product. Count me out.
This is already commonplace everywhere else in the world. In Singapore we don’t even have customs officers anymore. It’s all automated if you have an e-Passport.
Terminal 6 construction isn’t for other airlines is solely for JetBlue’s new international routes to eruope(London, Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin, Edinburgh) and hopefully more, the Caribbean and Latin America. It will help terminal 5 stay as a domestic terminal for JetBlue routes across America
So that’s where all NYC money is going 😂😅
love your content!
Saving this airport will help America a lot in transportation
No it won't
All nice and stuff, but what is and will be missing: Good Public Transport. 20 km (13 mi) between JFK and Manhattan and it still takes an hour by AirTrain + MTA. It won't need crazy high-tech solutions like a Maglev or Hyper Loop. Standard rail with 160 km/h (100 mph), a limited number of stops (e.g. Broadway Junction + Atlantic Av/Barclays Ctr) and it should be easily done in 20-30 min.
Or just reactivate the old _Rockaway Beach Branch_ between LIRR and Howard Beach, a cut-and-cover tunnel parallel to RWY 13R/31L, arriving between T1 and T4, done.
the only thing anyone of us should be doing is watching this B1M video right now
What?
I've always been a fan of LaGuardia because I was once a broke college student and you can easily just walk into the airport or take the Q70 for free to get to other transit links. No need to pay for a taxi or train ticket like you need to get to JFK.
I’m a simple man, I see a new video from the B1M, I watch.
So you like advertising videos for construction projects where they literally use footage from the PR videos? Unoriginal narration of press releases using PR footage.
It's about time JFK gets a massive upgrade. The Port Authority just opened a brand new Terminal A for us at Newark Airport and it was well-overdue for a replacement! Now its time for all 3 airports to be completely modernized and not stuck in the 1980s anymore!
Now that La Guardia is soo good, JFK has a lot of catching up to do
I’m happy it’s having a renovation I’ve flown their since I was little and the Renovation which I’ve seen some already and it’s looking great for terminal 5/6 and terminal 1 as well. T2 had to go and T4’s extension on the A Concorde needed some more

While facing challenges such as temporary shutdowns and logistical hurdles, the ambitious project demonstrates New York's commitment to maintaining its status as a global hub, ensuring JFK Airport remains competitive and efficient for years to come.
I don't see how a Country Trillions of $ in debt can find some $19bn to carry out this infrastructure. Then you have all these reports saying NY could be under water by 2050 where the Airport is right next to water ways!
NY is sinking and nothing to do with the fake climate change/Global Warming, which he never fails to mention, normally.
Because a nation’s debt isn’t like your credit card debt and the country isn’t broke. That’s just what politicians say so you’re willing to tighten your belt while they transfer more money to the top for it to “trickle down.”

Thank you!!!!😊
Love the vid, thank you
geez even Dulles now has direct subway service to the city and that is even more in the middle of nowhere.
We need go more in depth on the design firms who made this vision possible. Corgan and Gensler deserve some recognition, also feel the audience would enjoy learning a bit more about the design side a little more in depth.
I'm not a big commenter on videos, but ur content is great.
So still gonna be terminal 1, 4, 5/6, and 8 with that land side AirTrain connecting them? How is this an improvement for the rundown terminal 4 and 8 and overall disconnectedness?
I love this channel cuz it shows how much we can achieve when we work together. And pay people properly... Hopefully 😅
A major thing the Port Authority should consider making more affordable parking spaces available. Most drivers choose to hang around or idle right by the terminals o nearby to avoid paying for parking at the airport, thus creating traffic jams. They should also have affordable long term parking available right by the terminals.
This is nice! Though I was a little disappointed that better public transportation access won’t be considered.
T5 and T8 seems fine. The airspace is crowded. Changing the terminal layout wont affect that. There is only so much real estate to work with too
Judging by how successful LGAs renovation has been, I can actually say that I have faith for this to turn out well, if not for the fact that it will probably be delayed
Eh, I'm dubious about how well solar panels mesh with airports, especially during emergencies: one requires as many clear sightlines as possible, another tends to reflect intense glare into such sightlines.
