    Did some alligator gar fishing on Independence Day 2019 and it was a successful trip! I did very minor editing to it, didn't want to cut it up too much to show what it's really like fishing for these amazing fish. There's a whole lot of patience involved. I apologize for the wind audio in the video, but I hope you enjoy the video.

    Great video I love to hear the line peeling off the reel. That look like one hell of a fight.

      It was a fun fight, that sound makes the heart pump doesn't it. It was tricky getting up on the bank with the gaff by myself too! Thanks for watching 🤙

    Do you recommend the quantum blue runner rod? How is it holding up? I saw reviews about the guides popping out.

    • @FranciscoJavierOutdoors
      @FranciscoJavierOutdoors  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah I'd recommend it. I'm not suprised people have had that issue, its a cheap rod lol. But to be fair,, i have a 12' ugly stik surf rod with the same style guides and those have popped out, luckily I find them. On the quantum they haven't popped out (yet) and I've been pretty rough with it. I never washed it either, even after saltwater trips. I saw some corrosion after saltwater use, but brushed it out and greased it a bit, didn't completely remove it, but most of it is gone and it still works well. It's that type of rod that if it gets damaged, it won't be too big of a deal since its not that expensive.

    How is the H2O Torrid spinning reel hold up?

    • @FranciscoJavierOutdoors
      @FranciscoJavierOutdoors  3 роки тому

      Its holding up very well! Its one of my favorite reels to use when targeting bigger fish in fresh or saltwater. Theres a bit of corrosion on it on the handle from saltwater trips, but it doesn't affect performance. I've never washed the reel and its still holding up. Thanks for watching 🤙

    Whats the recommended lines and hooks needed for Gars. Im getting into fishing and loving it

    • @FranciscoJavierOutdoors
      @FranciscoJavierOutdoors  3 роки тому +1

      Awesome man! You're definitely hooked now, pun intended. I like using 50lb braid just incase that huge 5'-6' comes out, I know some folks that even use 60lb braid in their main line. It also helps when you get snagged on branches. You'll have better chances of getting off a snag with heavier line. For the leader I used a 60lb wire you can find on the offshore isle at any tackle shop, but make sure you get the wire that is coated with nylon. On the mainline before you tie the leader, put an egg weight, the weight will depend on the water you're fishing. If you're fishing calm waters with little to no current, I'd go with like a 2oz or 3oz egg weight. If you're fishing a river with stronger currents, I'd go with 4oz to even 5 oz. I use a single 4/0 treble hook at the end, some folks use double treble hooks or a treble hook at the end and a J hook freely sliding on the leader. I'll make a video soon on how I make my leaders, what kind of baits I use and how I rig them to target this species. Thanks for watching!
