16-35 2.8 on the a7iv is pretty insane when you think about its 24-52 equivelant in super35/crop mode. It's basically an all-in-one lens for both photo and video, the only thing lacking being on the telephoto end which you can solve with the Tamron 70-180 or 70-200 GM II if you've got the money. Two lenses and you're basically set from 16mm to ~300mm. Pretty mind blowing and worth considering instead of the knee jerk reaction to just suggest the 17-28 Tamron. That extra 7mm on the top end makes a difference especially if you're shooting portraits/lifestyle photos

i think this is a great idea for me instead getting a bunch of different prime lens 😂

youre channel is great!!! you have great potential to be a great utuber!!! i hope to follow your journey to that greatness!! with that said .. good stuff i was debating between that and a 50/1.2 GM ... i have the 24/1.4 GM but i need that widerangle lens. This video is leaning me towards the 16-35!! Great review

Great insightful video. I’m considering getting the 16-35mm. I would have liked to see more of the photos you’ve taken with the lens though.

A74 paired with GM 16-35 f2.8 is actually my first pair coming into the Sony ecosystem. Got it to start Real Estate photography/videography side hustle. Fortunately my main job has set me up in comfy spot, so the pair was within my budget. Tamron 17-28 or sigma art 14-28 would have been the buy if the GM wasn’t $1900 on sale. Couldn’t be happier. The flexibility of having up to 35mm(52mm in super 35 mode) is too nice running on one lens. And that extra 1mm on the wide counts for more than the higher focal lengths.

Totally agree. GM 16-35mm with a7iv body is a great combo for either stills or videography. If latter then apart from 24-52mm equiv in crop 50/60 fps it also benefits from focus breathing correction limited to just a few (mostly GM) lenses and only one body the a7iv. 24-105mm G is also a surprisingly good and underrated pairing (incl OSS) with wide GM.

The 16-35 also has invisible mode as demonstrated at 3:37 :) Love the channel Big E!

Great video! Super comfortable in front of the camera! It’s harder then people think! What is your A cam lens your using on your main shot? It’s the perfect lens for your studio shot!

I've found the Sigma 14mm-24mm Art lens be the best option over the GM. I didn't like the sunburst on the GM 24-70. It had a weird effect that wasn't pleasing to the eye. So I tried the Sigma 24-70 to be far superior in every aspect. I love the sunburst on it and it's also a little lighter. So that's when I became a Sigma fan and got their wide angle lens. So now I can cover from 14mm to 70mm with 2 lens and keep the aperture at 2.8.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and it was a great effort! I do think it could've been even better if you showed a little bit of photos and videos you took using the lens. Wanted to share my experience of using the 16-35 f2.8 gm: For photos it's fantastic. For video, it's one of the worse lenses I've used. The autofocus is very abrupt and not smooth even with the focus transition speed set to low (on the a7siii/fx3), lots of focus breathing and the focus motors are not smooth so you get a lot of in and out hunting jittery jaggedy shots when it grabs focus or when subject enters the frame - like you can see it in the corners, the image pulses 2-3 times when grabbing focus. I've tried 3 different copies and eventually gave up on that lens. However, I think on the a7iv, the focus breathing compensation may help with that. I used to have canon Rf 15-35 f2.8 and that lens is 10 times better for the same price as 16-35gm for video. Very Minimal breathing and it doesn't cause abrupt shifts and pulsing. I also find the tamron 17-28 way better in terms of breathing and smooth focus transitions so had to settle for a Tamron 17-28.That being said, I am hoping for an updated 16-35gm vii.

Love the 16-35 GM but had to send mine back to Sony twice now for issues relating to focus. Grateful it was always fixed quickly under warranty. I hope it was just my particular lens. I also used mine every single day. Most of my work is tripod mounted tethered to a laptop.

I had to sub. I've been watching you for awhile. I feel like you got hands. Like you real chill on these videos but you could definitely move some furniture around if there was ever a misunderstanding. 💯

*The A7IV is my first camera, and I got the more compact: 24mm - f/1.4.* It was cheaper and all around I guess I’ll mainly do video, and use it as a webcam, but I think it’s good for photos too.

LOVING the 2nd angle shots. It's funny because I feel like 16-35 is the EXACT range I would want to have too.

Just bought this for my Real estate photography to go on my a74. Switched slowly from canon over the last year. I have the 70-200 2.8 also. My next purchase is the 24-70. Love Sony but man it’s a learning curve.

Hey Big E, have you ever tried the Sigma 14-24mm F2.8, Art? It would be interesting to get your take on it. If you found the 16-35mm F4 used at $700 would that be a deal or a 16-35mm F2.8 GM used for $1650 or a Sony 12-24 F4, especially used for $1000?

What if you go for a prime like Sony 20mm f1.8 and use crop mode to get 30mm when needed?
That's an alternative for those who'd mainly use very wide and zoomed in and not much in between.

How about Sony 14mm 1.8 + sony 24mm 1.4 + Tamron 35-150 2-2.8? Looks like perfet combination for me, but not cheap.

Actually in Europe the official market price is 2600€, but from third party store (still brand new), you can get it for 1600-1700€, as Tamron is always 899€. But the main hesitation for me is more on the weight difference.

I have both. 16-35 is better when you’re videoing yourself on the move and want to be able to adjust the frame to take in more or less of the background very quickly. But it doesn’t generate significant bokeh, which is where the 24/1.4 take over: that lens just turns backgrounds and practical lights into magic, so if you’ve got control of the space or need to use the bokeh to disguise ugly locations, get that instead.

Surely the Sony FE C 16-35mm T3.1 G is better (for you) given it's a souped-up version of this same lens? I think calling the 16-35 GM the best is a bold claim!
