I was between the 16-28 and the 20mm 1.8. I have the Sigma 28-70 2.8 and really like it. I wanted to get the 16-28 to pair with it, but two things pushed me to the 20mm 1.8. 1. Your gorgeous review of the 20mm where you went on that epic hike, showed me the 20mm can get that "produced feel" of the bokeh. Feels a bit more "cinematic" and dreamy. And because of how light it is - it's easier to hike with. 2. I wish Sigma had made the 16-28 with a 67mm filter thread to match the 28-70 so I could use the same filters and not need step up rings. The 20mm 1.8 has the 67mm filter thread (and my most used kit is the 28-70 and 35GM 1.4 that also has the 67mm filter) so that pushed me over the edge to get the (really lightweight) 20mm 1.8.

I would love to see a video on how you manage these solo shoots, assuming you don't have a sherpa going with you ...
I'm curious about whether or not your particular copy of the Tamron just had some QC issues. I own that lens, and I don't see the same sharpness issues with it that you encounter (I'm shooting on an a7rIV). I've also seen other comparisons of these two lenses that have shown the Tamron to be sharper in some instances. Great video, but it makes me wonder ... I already have the Tamron 17-28,, f/2.8 lens. Would you say that there is enough difference between these lenses that you would recommend selling my Tamron to get this lens? (Or as a more expensive option saving my pennies and getting the 12-24mm f/4 G as my wide angle zoom option?) Thanks.
The new Tamron 20 - 40mm is the one for me, it covers my most used prime lenses. Its small lightweight and covers my 20 24 35 and 50 (with a small crop in - or clear age zoom)
I'm on the fence. I've had the g master for years, but am starting to value size and weight a little more. Thinking of selling my G master to pick this up.
I’m in the same boat, I love my GM but I’ve been doing more hiking and travelling again and I want a lighter kit without sacrificing quality. I probably won’t sell my GM but I do think I’ll pick this one up for a lighter option.
Im in the L Mount ecosystem. Should I get this one or the Lumix S Pro 16-35 f4? I already own the Lumix 24-105 f4 and I never ran into problems with apperture but faster is better right? Price difference is around 300€ if I buy used.
Looking for the perfect lens to compliment the fantastic tamron 35-150 f2-2.8. This looks to be a strong contender so I don't have to carry too many lenses or having multiple cameras
I’m in the same boat. 28mm is my favorite focal length, so it’s nice having a stop there. The range between 28-35 is strange and i don’t think you’d be missing anything interesting there
Great video friend, thanks. Do you think this sigma could work well for outdoor videos and low light wedding videos? I'm a little worried about the autofocus. I have the sony A7iii
Is there a standard adjustment I could make in Lightroom to counter the warmth from sigma lenses? In other words when adjusting white balance to match, is there a standard “amount” for that adjustment to get it to match every time
this sigma is a direct competitor to its own 14-24 f2.8 that was less than 2 years old. the new one being so cheap, that it destroyed used prices of the 14-24 overnight. I had to sell my 14-24 so fast, I only had a few days of cloudy nights to never use it. Really, its been so cloudy that I havent needed to replace it. Bonus
For what I do, I might have to go with Tamron for that focus distance. Do you think Sigma could get the job done for my close up product shots? Currently my iPhone gets SUPER close. Without using macro lens. Might be because it’s cropping on the sensor? Does that sound right? Couldn’t cropping in create the appearance of better min focus distance? Idk moving from iPhone will be an adjustment. But I need aperture control cuz iPhone is way too shallow. It’s not capable of just recording an entire controller. It has to focus on either the buttons, or the control sticks. Or the handle lol. It’s pretty wild it can’t just have the whole product in focus which is ridiculous. Maybe it’s BECAUSE I’m holding it so close? Idk but if I’m not close I can’t see it.
I had a problem with the 16-35 gm flat cable, they say it's a chronic problem for it to break. Does the 16-28 sigma have any chronic problems? Can you tell me if its focus is mechanical or electronic? When the flat cable on the 16-35 broke, it didn't even work in manual focus.
I've this lens for about a year but didn't really have an opportunity to fully utilize it (was quite busy with other things). Used in on an apsc body as a walk about lens and it worked great. Admittingly I should take it out more often after you have shown me just how good it is.
Even though "Contemporary" and not "Art", remember Sigma makes these lenses targeting their Sigma fp L camera which is 61MP. This was my deciding factor when purchasing the Sigma 16-28/28-70 lineup as a lighter weight option. I have no complaints to date on the A7RIV.
I love my sigma lenses. I'm planning on getting this one some time this year. Sony and Sigma both feel like companies that hire photographers to make lenses for photographers. Tamron seems to just have engineers that are trying to solve a set of concrete problems as cheaply as possible.
For one thing, when you are buying a high quality lens, it means you are more than just a beginner photographer and clear image zoom should not even be an option (nor mentioned) for taking photos as a way to extend the range of your zoom because you can only use it when shooting JPEG. The only way zoom in to your RAW image is to crop.
hey!! than you for this video! i am a videographer and looking for a good wide angle lens to film danceperformances/crews/dancers... can this be a good one for a sony a7iv?
Thank you SO much for making this Dunna! I've been looking for a comparison for these lenses and I KNEW that you would eventually get around to this lens. 🥰 This is likely going to be my next lens purchase since I have no wide angle lenses yet. 📷 I also loved the views form your hike as I've been stuck at home due to Hurricane Fiona, and have been stuck at home since Friday while the city cleans up downed trees and power lines. 😅
I could easily see this replacing my 20mm f1.8. I nearly never NEED 1.8 on it and the ability to go 4mm wider and then have just a touch of zoom is nice. All that and it’s barely more. That 20mm f1.8 is pretty awesome thoigh
So Ive been eyeing the 10-18 f4 Sony for a vlog lens, but this might take the cake with the extra stops of light. I’m on ff, so no accidental vignette worries.
That’s a tough one… I guess I would ask the question “are you unhappy with the Tamron?” If so then upgrade, if not, then I wouldn’t stress about it. It’s definitely better but the process of side stepping for an equivalent lens is a pain too.
I've owned the Tamron for a year or longer now and tried the new Sigma when it came out but I wouldn't recommend switching if you already own the Tamron which in my testing had noticable faster AF and slightly worse image quality in some areas.
No, Tamron's 67mm filter size is the deal maker, which pairs very well with 28-200 or the new 50-400. I don't need to worry about step-up ring when running and gunning.

If your absolute main concern is keeping it as small and light as possible then I’d go with the f4. Or, if for some reason you are really concerned about the autofocus of the sigma and not having lens breathing compensation. But other than those very nit picky specifics, I’d go with the sigma instead, it’s cheaper, still super small, f2.8, and the quality is great.
Great video as always. Ya I would take the sigma over my 17-28mm for sure. Im in the L Mount ecosystem. Should I get this one or the Lumix S Pro 16-35 f4? I already own the Lumix 24-105 f4 and I never ran into problems with apperture but faster is better right? Price difference is around 300€ if I buy used.
I would be interested in a comparison between this, the 16-35 PZ and the new Tamron 20-40 f2.8
May have to snag this lil baddie
We all know you’re the lil baddie.
Nice video. Did u problems with vigneting when you used filters for that long exposure shot? I am thinking to buy it...
No issues with vignetting as long as you use the right kind of filters!
@@dunnadidit thank you for reply
Gr8 vid was speaking to a friend about a wide lens he recommended the gmas but I don't think he's seen this. Thnx for the insight I'm def grabbing!
Which one would you prefer for architectural shots, and if they are going to be printed?
In other words when adjusting white balance to match, is there a standard “amount” for that adjustment to get it to match every time
Which one better for Real Estate and Interior Photo and Event Photography?? Please Please suggest between sigma 14-24mm vs sigma 16-28mm @dunna did it
great video
which lens you think is more versatile for social media tamron 17-28mm or 20-40mm?
this sigma is a direct competitor to its own 14-24 f2.8 that was less than 2 years old.
the new one being so cheap, that it destroyed used prices of the 14-24 overnight.
The timelapse was beautiful.
Thanks for the video! May I ask about how does it performs in architecture photos, interiors, real state photos...
Thank you from Madrid!
I am definitely getting this!
Love it!
I love my sigma lenses. I'm planning on getting this one some time this year. Sony and Sigma both feel like companies that hire photographers to make lenses for photographers. Tamron seems to just have engineers that are trying to solve a set of concrete problems as cheaply as possible.
Fantastic review. You've got me thinking about it :) (my GM is just so heavy and bulky)
How's it for stabilization.. And breathing?
what is the filter size for the E mount version? Or does it not have a filter thread at all?
this videi in the studiolook so good, w setting, lens and you use ?
For one thing, when you are buying a high quality lens, it means you are more than just a beginner photographer and clear image zoom should not even be an option (nor mentioned) for taking photos as a way to extend the range of your zoom because you can only use it when shooting JPEG. The only way zoom in to your RAW image is to crop.
Good review ! thank you to France 🙏🏼
Great review ! Thanks ! Will be picking up today !
What recording set up did you use for these ocean shots?
Hi, newbie question: will it work with APSC? I have A6600 and I am looking for zoom. I am happy witam my other Sigma, so that is why I am asking.
hey!! than you for this video!
i am a videographer and looking for a good wide angle lens to film danceperformances/crews/dancers... can this be a good one for a sony a7iv?
Great video!
Does this lens can be used on sony a6500?
Thank you SO much for making this Dunna! I've been looking for a comparison for these lenses and I KNEW that you would eventually get around to this lens. 🥰 This is likely going to be my next lens purchase since I have no wide angle lenses yet. 📷
I also loved the views form your hike as I've been stuck at home due to Hurricane Fiona, and have been stuck at home since Friday while the city cleans up downed trees and power lines. 😅
Sorry to hear about that. Thanks for the kind words!
I could easily see this replacing my 20mm f1.8. I nearly never NEED 1.8 on it and the ability to go 4mm wider and then have just a touch of zoom is nice. All that and it’s barely more. That 20mm f1.8 is pretty awesome thoigh
It’s true, I prefer the versatility of a zoom lens but that 20mm has something special about it.
Don’t do it 😀
Which shoes do you wear for the hike? They look awesome!
They’re from On running. I can’t remember the model name but they are their trail runners.
which will you choose between this and the 20mm 1.8 G for a wide angle lens in your kit?
Ooh tough one! But I think I prefer the versatility of the zoom lens
Hey Dunna, completely off topic, but what's the hoodie you're wearing in the shots by the ocean? It's fire!!!!
It’s from Cuts Clothing. I really need a fresh one too, this one has been loved to death.
So Ive been eyeing the 10-18 f4 Sony for a vlog lens, but this might take the cake with the extra stops of light.
I’m on ff, so no accidental vignette worries.
Great video, Dunna. As a 17-28mm 2.8 owner, would you say the improvements are worth upgrading to? Or is it pretty marginal?
I already have a Canon 15-35 2.8. But I am really annoyed that I can't enjoy these Sigma lenses without an adapter to EF versions...
We are waiting for sigma 16-28 f2.8 DG Dn vs Tamron 20-40 f2.8 vs sony 16-35 f4 PZ G comparison on your channel sir . hope u will you make & post video thank u 🙂 !! Great video as always... 🇳🇵
Dunna, great video 🙌🏼 Any ideas for tap good song macro lens? Looking at the 90mm Sony macro or the tamron 70-180 2.8
I dunno about cheap but the 90mm seems to be everyone’s go to still.
@@dunnadidit thanks 😀
You made that hike at least 3 times that day.
The sigma 14-24 art 2.8 lens is a beast!
I recently just got this lens as well. So far it is great, I do a lot of product videos and have this lens as my top down to get a nice wide shot even though the camera is not far above me. Great for my travel video stuff as well. I have the Sigma 24-70 as well. nothing longer than this though yet.
Nice!
hey 👋🏻 dunna if you’re in the market for a wide angle are you recommending this or the sony 16-35 f4?
Yes that would be great comparison - I bet the ibis and 3d pop on Zeiss could beat the sigma
I think I am holding out for a Sony 16-35mm GM ii (and my wallet lol)….unless I vlog I don’t use the 17-28mm that much, but my 24mm 1.4 GM has been living on my camera. I now also have the 12-24mm f4 Sony for real estate. I have lots of wide options lol
Great video! 🫡
Great lens 🫡
Fantastic video and review but i cant help but think about you running back to your camera after every shot of you walking away 😂
Would you recommend it for real estate?
Great comparison of these lenses. Thanks!
Looks great! Currently pondering a zoom that would be a wider option to my 24-240mm and this may be the ticket...
Yeah, it’s a solid one to cover your ultra wide range.
Dunna did it, I’m buying this.
sigma 16-28mm or 14-24mm - for photography
My only issue is the 14-24 I'm worried Ill scratch it
Is it good on a Sony zVE-10?
Hi dunna tamron 20 40 2.8 review please
Thank you for this video! Probably going to grab this lens for the new Sony ZVE1 coming out
Did you buy this lens ?
@@thereds32 I got the 16-35 F4 and I love it! Little bit cheaper, we film in the sun mostly but I’ve got some insane night footage too
@@thereds32 I got the Sony 16-35 F4 version. Not sigma
@@borillasnaps Thank you for responding to my comment. I am considering the 16-35mm PZ f4 for my gimbal work, but I'm also torn between that and the new Sony 16-25mm f2.8. I already have a 24-70mm lens for situations where I might need that range. lol too many options
Glad I saw this! I used to have the GM 16-35. Great Lens but, the past few years I had to tighten the belt so to speak. Since I still have the GM 24-70mm, this looks like a great addition now that things are picking back up.
And what about the stabilization ? Is there any difference ?
if you were to choose between this sigma lens or the sony fe pz 16-35 which one would you choose?
That’s soooo tough. In this hypothetical scenario, do I still have my 16-35 GM? Or am I starting fresh with no wide angle zoom?
@@dunnadidit starting fresh. I’m picking up a a7c and want to get a good all around lens to do videos.
I’d go sigma then. But for an all around, I might lean towards a 24-70 unless you specifically know you need ultrawide
@@dunnadidit ok how about sigma 24-70 vs Sony G 24-105
Personally I’d go sigma on that onr
