Parking that your life is generally in danger whilst in NYC, it's actually unknown the level of destruction that would occur as NYC is a well built concrete jungle and they have nothing to compare it to.
Yes, it would depend on how thoroughly the attacker would want the city destroyed. NYC is pretty big, so if they targeted midtown Manhattan with a single decently large airburst bomb, someone in the shopping center basement of a tall building on the other side of the city might come out unscathed after a couple of weeks with some luck.
@exotemporal3792 The yield would be large enough to create destruction and small enough to limit the area of destruction so as to overwelm the emergency response.
Honestly and this is just my opinion, if NYC gets hit, there won't be time for any of this.

That would be an extremely expensive and largely pointless exercise. We have over a century of data on the effect of bombs on buildings, bunkers and all manner of construction. We know with great confidence what is necessary to survive what sort of blast. Ron's shelters are more than adequate to keep anyone alive who isn't within a few kilometers of a nuclear blast, and then shelter them for the few weeks necessary to wait out the fallout decay.
You wouldn't build your private shelter in ground zero anyways so there is no need for that. As long as you are protected from radiation and the collapse of social order it does the job.

Any high population density area, with any critical industry infrastructure (including clusters of skilled workers), it's going to be on a list of key targets for nuclear warfare by enemy nations (and possibly even some allied nations too "just in case").
And they don't just send the one nuke either, they volley those areas over an hour to ensure total destruction, and to make sure at least one rocket gets through.
So, yeah, sitting at home in pajamas in an NYC apartment block watching TV isn't going to help. Best bet is to not be in the city at all, or at the very least get as far underground as you can.

Electric is a given but how about alcohol stoves like Sterno or chafing fuel if the electricity is out? I remember you said natural gas is a no no in a bunker. Is this also the same with alcohol burning stoves?
