- We got access to metal detect a colonial farm that is flanked on 3 sides by two 1700s houses and an old stone grist mill. Doug is away on vacation this week so our friend Jessica is taking his place, and boy did she knock a mega bucketlister off her list! Not only was it the oldest coin of the day but it was also the oldest coin she’s ever dug by hundreds of years! But then down the stretch she was challenged for the oldest coin of the hunt by an equally impressive monster also going back hundreds of years! But can her monster old coin hold off the challenge, we shall see but in the end everyone left this field a winner!

I love the old stonework. After doing a lot of genealogy, I found 2 - 7x great grandfathers who lived in old stone homes that are still standing today. One in Loudoun County, VA and the other in Bucks County, PA. You’ve guys have taught me so much history. Thank you.

The flattened edge of such coins is part of it's Flan. The first Belgic/Gallic gold staters to arrive in Briton were the 'Wide Flan Types', with Appollo's head on their obverse. The white powder on lead is lead oxide. They used to use it as paint pigment, window glaze and other kinds of fillers. They appropriately called it "white lead". Don't eat it.

The coin you are calling a KG III Farthing and showing a British KG III Farthing for comparison is probably an undersized Counterfeit Irish Halfpenny. If you compare the bust to the Irish halfpenny that dates 1774-1782 you will see it better resembles it... and the reason it's more likely an undersized halfpenny than an Irish Farthing is because they didn't strike Farthings during that period. Considering it has to be counterfeit anything is possible and could be a counterfeit of a coin that did not exist (meaning a KG III Irish Farthing), but I would place my bet on undersized halfpenny. I've personally dug an Irish halfpenny that is well undersized so they definitely do exist. You have some great sites and equally great finds!

That second coin could be a Virginia half penny. Look smaller than a half cent but bigger than a farthing. Work on that back. And congrats on Jess’s mint 1 reale

I wonder if colonial people threw the foreign coins out after the war? In spite of the British. In Brazil they threw their coins out after the currency change. To bad they are Mostly Stainless Steel....
about cleaning silver coins. Dug coins have less value because they are dug. Minor scratches from cleaning won't effect very rare coins' value and won't impact a dug coin worth. None of you sell them so why be paranode? Can a carful spraying offset the damages of 200 years in the ground?

I just upgraded this week and only had a small chance to play around with it in the yard. The real test will be this weekend at a 1750s home we’re going to so I’ll have a better idea once the weekend is over.
