@@WillSchusterick Whenever someone I'm teaching has a question about how hard to grip the disc, I have them hold it as if they were going to throw it.... and then I smack it out of their hand. They get to see immediately whether they are holding too tightly or too loosely. Plus it shows them who's in charge! And you are DEAD ON about slower, straight-flying discs for newer players. If someone can learn to throw 230-270 dead straight, playing a course to par isn't that hard. Throwing a 7-speed accurately is WAY better than throwing an 11-speed 50 feet farther but with minimal accuracy. It's awesome to see you out and about more. Wish you were still touring.

You were so important to so many of us and our enjoyment of the game for so long. What a dream to have you back and accessible in this way. As far as your first point, I spent 15 years throwing destroyers and wraiths when I should have been sticking with 7-9 speeds and mids as you say. I had to re learn a backhand the past 2 years (that wasnt a constant flex shot) and now at 50 am shooting my best ever. I wasted so many years trying to throw those discs mainly.

That first tip though. Man I wish I’d had somebody tell me that higher speed does not equate longer drives for beginners. Somebody reframed the way I think of a disc’s speed rating and it’s how I describe it to beginners now. Glide, Turn, and Fade describe OUTputs of the disc. They are all behaviors the disc “wants” to exhibit. I now think of Speed as an INput however. It’s how much speed and power you as the thrower can put into the disc. For instance, when I started throwing, a Leopard was my go to driver. I had the capability of throwing at say a 4 or 5 speed consistently, so the under stable nature of the Leopard which is a 6 speed helped to correct for my lack of power and made the disc fly like a laser. As my technique and power grew though, it started to flex out a bit, and now I have a hard time not turning it over and more often than not it’s now my go to roller. To get that same response I had to scale up to a Leopard3 and then to an Archangel and so on. I did what a lot of people did and bought the 5-Disc starter set from Innova when I was beginning, and I still have no idea why they included a Destroyer in that kit.
Mid ranges are by far my favorite discs to throw. Still haven't found a 7 speed disc I like🤔

Glad you are back Will. I met you some years ago at the fade station open in Albuquerque New Mexico. Such a nice guy and incredibly fun to watch bomb discs. First pro I saw in person that really made throwing really far look effortless. Hope everything is going good with your kid and I hope you continue to put out content. Much missed voice in our community.

I went to Rosie for practice the day before that tournament and Will was there about to hold a clinic when someone suggested they change venue to Baca. There were only two people left at the park and we ended up throwing together since he was from someplace in Minnesota and didn't know the layout. He turned out to be one of the nicest down-to-earth touring pros I've met and anyone else who's had the opportunity to hang out with Cale Leiviska would certainly say the same. Just wish I could have hung out with Will and glean from his knowledge and skill.

One of my fondest memories of you is from The Memorial battling with P McB and somehow your card was miss counted which made you tied with Paul and had to have a playoff ftw! I bought the beginner and advanced instructional videos from Will ... good stuff. I've seen this one before. The one thing the instructional videos lack in some areas is how to feel the movements being talking about. E.G. when throwing a (almost) full power shot, you say (paraphrasing) "let the elbow bend". What you don't say is what muscles you are actually using to throw that allows the elbow to bend. Exactly how are you throwing the disc that allows the elbow to bend since I don't believe you need to be conciously thinking to bend the elbow to get the "power pocket" position. What should it feel like?
Question what is your neck health and how do you keep your neck healthy playing disc golf, also how long are your breaks between playing days.

Du to finger issues I throw everything with a power grip. The Berg was a key for me. Now I have a disc that I can throw in the 40m range without thwowing too far or losing control because I want to "release" my power grip actively

There's at least one player on tour who could have avoided a lot of drama and critical video clips by applying this one.

I definitely agree on playing with better competition. i think people get too hung up on "Ratings" when playing in tournaments. There are "Rec" players in my area that are throwing 450+ feet. the PDGA defines each division not just solely based on rating. its also based on skill level such as driving distance, the amount of different shots you can throw as well as the amount of putts made from a certain distance. such as 6-7/10 from 20 feet or 7-8/10 from 25 feet. You will get better playing up in divisions, even if your "rating" doesnt reflect it. you may not win but the goal is to get better. having a bunch of wins in REC doesnt mean much. move up and try to win in intermediate or advanced.
Death move number zero: Not being willing to listen to experienced players about the death moves.

Have you videod your throw? If so, are you rounding at all? If that's not it then check to see if your elbow is close to away from you so your arm is a or very close to 90 degree angle from your chest. Lastly, practice slowly with the disc at the distance away from your chest that you think is correct and slowly increases the speed until you create a new habit. Be patient and persistent with this form correction technique. Good luck!

Good video! Lately, I've started to throw more shots on anhyzer angle, unless I really want the disc to skip/flare. I think it is really useful especially in the woods where "placement" could be as important as hitting your line. I also think that if you master the angle, the gaps will "open up" somewhat and be easier to hit.
I've been working on my game for a long time, and watched a ton of instructional videos, but the most impactful revelation that influenced my game came from watching a Will video where he doesn't say a word, titled "super slow motion disc golf drive. It is a great study on form and technique, but more than anything, it was a lesson on being one with the disc, and I've been getting my zen on in the park ever since.

Basketball players have their routine for free throws, makes sense for each golf shot. The pitfall of backyard putting practice to not skew my routine. It shocked me how many dance steps I could relate to disc golf, particularly scramble foot placement and weight transfers for x-step. Everyone draws on life experiences for new skills or hobbies.
A good start with 12 common mistakes you see from players. Now you have 10-12 videos waiting to be made.
How far should we be throwing before we can move away from the putters and midranges?
It is not distance that determines when. It is smooth arm speed without losing accuracy. Slow driver would be next, a 7 speed until it starts wanting to flip to anhyzer.
@@rfinnegan7106 how do I determine my arm speed?
@@btubbs00123 go out and find a 250 foot hole and throw putters at it until you start getting in the circle. then work up to mids. if you are throwing mid ranges around the same distance as drivers then you arent ready for a driver.
@@NoChairs4 Nice I am pretty confident I could get a putter 240. My destroyers only barely get over 300 on my best throws, so mids should probably be getting over 300 before I really go back into drivers it sounds like?
@@btubbs00123 i wouldnt say that necessarily. your mids for an AM should be somewhere in the 240-285 range. then try to get a 7 speed from around 260-300+. if i were you i would try to find a 9 speed to replace your destroyer. maybe something straight to under stable and get really good at throwing that as far as you can. i would highly recommend a dynamic discs Zach Melton Maverick for your first 7 speed driver. that disc has helped me correct my form. i was throwing it just as far as some of my 12 speeds

Please please please lean into your UA-cam/socials. Find someone local to help film/edit. You have the most fascinating way of explaining things. Touring may not be an option, but you can definitely be a thought leader on UA-cam very quickly. Diversify the content and try to post often. “Shorts” are an easy way to gain subscribers too.

Discouraging field work is silly. It’s been proven in many disciplines, you can’t focus on mechanics and perform at the same time.
Most ams (the target of this video) DONT DO ENOUGH FIELD WORK. I only broke 500’ after almost 2 years of nearly daily field work and video review.
Not impressed by this rehashing of old basics.
It is not saying "dont do field work ever" it is saying dont live by doing field work. Take it to the course and work on hitting real golf lines versus throwing in an open field.
@@WillSchusterick I just think in 99% of cases, people aren't doing enough field work. Seems like bad advice to start spreading in my opinion. I like the concept of the video, but this feels like the same thing as "beginner advice" not necessarily "death moves."
Drake, what's your biggest accomplishment as a professional? I know, and have thrown, 500' but I'm always looking to improve rather than try to make myself look better by casting aspersions at someone who's proven they know what they're talking about. I guess there are disc golf trolls too.
