Tensor Mag lights with rails is crazy, literally like sliding on ice! Magnesium trucks slide amazingly, but they wear down a lot quicker than other metal trucks.
All the recent "should you add rails to your board" videos on UA-cam are kinda surreal to an old timer like me. In the late eighties/early nighties the discussion was "should you take the rails off your deck?". Back then for instance many completes came with rails already. The cheaper to mid boards also often had 'tail savers' which were massive rounded plastic bumpers that were bolted to the underside of your (single) kick. Oh and even 'nose guards ' that looked like you deck was wearing a retainer. To be fair, back then most rails that came supplied were awful, kinda hollow things with kinda 'crinkle cut' edges for extra grip (back then vert was king so I guess that was the priority rather than slides etc) and what pissed most people off was that after a couple of hours skating they'd come loose and start rattling. I remember as street became more popular, the sign that you were cool as that you took off your rails and definitely the stupid tail saver if you had one. We dabbled with the more 'quality' rails, more similar to the ones sold now and remember they were way better, but ultimately it became lame to use rails and they were forgotten. So it's so weird for me to see them creeping back. Not a 'bad' thing just weird.
Just recently set up rails on my deck. Can't believe I was missing out all these years lol! Stoked on the length of slides I am getting! Best advice for riding with deck rails in the first minute of this video. Why limit the fun! Found this video while searching how to make rails a little more solid feeling (no rattle). Anyways, I ended up not finding too many videos and cut out bicycle inner tube to fit exactly under my rails and they have a super solid feel. I met you out at SCV recently. You have a sick channel. lots of insane skateboarding.
Also Dan, you're the only other person I've seen who's chopped off a bit of each rail! The owner at the skateshop looked at me like I was crazy when I did that, but who wants MORE wheelbite?! HELL YES thank you for understanding! 🤘
Another pro: it makes balance slightly easier as it squares off the concave of your board.. so rather then balancing on a slightly rounded surface your balanced more level with the rail. Atleast for me anyway🤷♂️😂
Rails are literally my biggest skate fear, but convinced myself to land my first trick (back nose) on a bump to bar because dan made me think it's compulsory after watching him skate
lmao I lost it laughing when you did the comparison with Dale's board and just launched it xD Love the videos, helped inspire me to start skating again! Much love, peace
I wonder if rails make your board stronger in cases of landing too close in the middle of the board? I never used rails because of thinking they would add weight, but rails seem very logical, and the chicks dig it! 😆🖖
I’ve ridden rails for probably the last 10 or so decks (I don’t remember exact amount), and I’ve never snapped a middle of a board while they’re on a deck. Tail and right next to the truck yes but they definitely strengthen the main centre of your deck.
I like rails, _but_ I like Everslick boards way better. Both are (slightly) heavier than a regular skateboard, but the Everslick adds durability. It's worth a consideration too.
I like everslick just for the preservation of the graffix, which rails help with as well, but also less drilling holes and messing around with hardware and more skating lol
Hahaha them revive jokes & “AR” & “BR” lmfao 🤣 it makes me laugh so hard when you annoy dale!! Sorry Dale!! Lol I seriously do enjoy your guys on screen chemistry. Makes these videos even more fun!! This video was awesome!! Made my day and pumped me up to go skate with my board that has rails by the way!!
It’s kinda strange for us older guys coming from a time when everyone had rails and it was odd not to, compared to now where people think it’s a novelty to use them, I made a similar video explaining about the consistency etc too and another part of that is the two points of contact with the bar or coping which makes it really solid rather than rocking on the concave of the bare deck. Best rails are always the hardest ones, bones are way too soft these days, they used to make some called thin ribs which were way harder and actually exactly the same as the enjoi ones (they were called tummy sticks) you mentioned and also the ones Girl used to make. Steve Caballero still rides them as he has a stock pile from bitd and strangely all 3 types I mention were only available in orange 🍊🤔. These days I ride Santa Cruz Cell block rails as they are super hard and thicker so they don’t wear down too fast and they are super slippery , they just released the OJ versions that are Orange so had to get them of course 😆. The only other ones I’d say were hard enough are Pig Rails but they are too slim for my concave , Grosso used to swear by them and he & Cab were/are the kings of rock n roll slides in pool. Great video👊🏼
I'm another guy who used to skate in the 80s when rails were the norm. Yea it's odd reading some peoples views on them these days and how some people are hesitant about using them. Some people think they're ugly but to me, they look normal. Likewise, some people these days think that fishtail shaped decks look ugly but I think they look awesome. Once again, it was just the norm in the 80s. I also find it strange that some people worry that rails are going to add extra weight to their board. Why the worry? They're super light (at least the 80s rails were.) I don't know about the weight of modern rails but I doubt they'd be much different. Ive heard good things about Pig Rails but haven't used them as yet. Do you reckon they would be fine on a deck with medium concave? I guess it wouldn't be wise to use them on a deck with deep concave.
@@anzaeria I totally agree! Pig rails are good because they are very hard which is what you want really because they slide consistently (I cant understand why some people want rails that dont slide well - kinda defeats the purpose) but their only downside is that they are very slim, so like you say not ideal for a deep concave, it will mean you have to mount them closer together further in on the deck which i dont like. I have found the perfect rails to be Santa Cruz/Crature/OJ they are all the same with a different name but they are hard, deep enough to fit in a sensible position on the deck and slide very consistently.
@@NeilHesterSkateboarding Yea Ive heard good things about pig rails but not the hardware that comes with them. There seem to be a number of complaints about the screws. It sounds like the Santa Cruz rails have a good reputation and are popular. I might grab a pair of those perhaps for my modern board with medium concave. Though I did read comments from two people who broke their Santa Cruz rails which sounds crazy to me. Ive never heard of rails breaking before. One of these guys claimed that they broke within one day. Are the Santa Cruz rails usually supplied with good quality screws?
I'll put a couple on top of my board for dark slides..lol no not really.. but this does make sense if you want to slide farther and easier! i'd say try it.

How far would u recomend placing the rails in from the edge on a 8.25? Is there like a certain measurement you know to measure them in from the side? Like a inch or inch and a qtr?
I know this is too late but ive been riding rails on and off for years and I 've been using enjoys rails and i here you on them so what i did was sand them down to make it look like a speed bump makes them slide way better then the first set i tried . trial and error when your stuck with the same rails your shop carries .
Does anybody rock just the one rail? I noticed some of the local young kids in KC are just rocking one rail on just one side of their board? I am not that big on deck rails in general, but I am curious as to why someone would just want one rail and not two?
super fun to ride had some on my last board only problem for me with them is when i would disaster on ramps i would slide out but without rails i can do then just fine
YOCAHER rails last long time. Been using this brand for several years now. I remember Schmidt sticks had some that had a track on the bottom of the rail the hardware mounted to the board and you slid the rails on to the hardware.
For a normal rail slide would using 1 rail instead of two cut the friction in half? ... if you could stay perfectly balanced with 1 rail down the middle.
