Recent fort Leonardwood grad here, we got 30,000$ worth of fireworks and people stood in very long lines for a small cup of Gatorade. Got an hour of phone time too, We had kinda lighter training that day, that was it.
It’s wild to equate a combat patch with leadership ability. Many great leaders joined during peacetime and earned their rank through hard work, not deployments. If rank were tied to patches, plenty of ineffective leaders would hold high positions. Leadership is about competence and character, not what’s on your sleeve. That mindset is toxic.
No a combat patch doesn’t equal leadership ability. However, during deployments awards are given out like candy which equal more promotion points. Some awards you can only get in a combat zone. Combat awards really help out with VA claims when you get out. Plus the feeling of being a war veteran is one that no one can take away from you.
@ my drill sergeant even hyped us up telling us the food there was gonna be there and the attractions and what we would do. Just for them to basically yell at us and let us sit on the grass and watch it, it was cool tho

An SFC without a combat patch just seems so wild to me. Then again, I got out in 09.

Idk I get what you’re saying but also you were in at a wild time of hella deployments. Combat deployments are basically non-existent right now
