"I'm sorry Specialist, you didn't properly educate yourself about the Daytona 500...we're going to have to hold off your promotion until we see significant improvement in said field"
This is JUST an example. The Sergeants and Sergeants Major (President of the Board) would ask a lot more pertinent questions and other things as well, such as reciting the NCO Creed. This is just a very small glimpse into an Army Promotion Board.
“Army song go!” “First to fight for the right and to build the nations might and the army goes rolling...” “Soldiers creed go!” “The Soldiers creed I am an American Soldier, a warrior and a member of a team...” “Creed of the non commissioned officer, Go!” “No one is more professional than I, I am a non commissioned officer, a leader of soldiers! As a non commissioned officer...” “That’s enough, take your seat SPC.” (had my chair upside down behind me, lol nice try, I picked it up and sat down) “Why do you wear your rank on your ach and uniform at the same time?” “SGM, because that is the standard SGM” My board experience... it truly is a cake walk, and a fucking joke! By the way, don’t speak all softly like this pansy spc did, I had to yell the creeds, unit motto and shit.
Also in boards like this they aren’t always necessarily looking for the right answer. They are looking for your confidence as a leader. If you hesitate with you answers you will always sound unsure. Trust in your own abilities
At an E-6 grilling a soldier was asked about EVERYTHING Infantry He got all the questions right. The next man walked in and he heard them start to ask him medical questions. The soldier said he was not a medic. Somehow they got my records mixed up with his. Made 6 later that month. Thank God I was a medic with an infantry unit..
"If it is Saturday and I am combing my bald head with a ladder, which direction will the wind blow if I turn inside out?" "Uhhhh" "That is all I have."

I did many soldier and promotion boards. The hardest one I did was a all day event for soldier of the year for division. It involved the day starting with a PT test, a written test, an oral board, a land navigation test and multiple weapons disassembly and assembly timed.
"Who won the Daytona 500" "Who was the 34th US President?" "What did you have for dinner yesterday?" "If there was one thing world you could have, what would that be?" "Why Am I asking these questions?"
1SG Beckwith: Specialist Snuffy, What is esprit de corps? ME: First Sergeant ... It's French. (I would like to note that I said it confidently enough that I got a chuckle from Top and the CSM) 31 years later that moment still rings in my head!

I know right? It's like, "You know, you would've been a good NCO, but your NASCAR knowledge is lacking so at this time we can't recommend you for promotion." Lol.

hahaha current events stuff youll end up hearing questions like this. its just a test of how well you respond. im putting together a video on board prep and ill def add this.
The answer is true north, grid north and magnetic north. True north is determined by direction, grid north is north from a SPECIFIC point on a map and magnetic north is determined by use of a compass.
In Korea they decided to fuck with a SPC and set the chair on it's side (to see if he would pick it up and then give him shit for doing something he wasn't told to) this guy managed to sit at the (somewhat) position of attention on a sideways chair. All the NCOs were laughing too hard to get the questions out and passed him.
Say the creed with pride as well as the unit motto at the end. You don't have to repeat the question. Many do to get some time to figure out the answer.
This is a mock board or "Example" the reason he answered it wrong is to give an Example of what to say when you do not know the answer to a question. A real board would have been way longer.

Well, the US Army of 2018 still has time in service and time in grade requirements. Only after meeting those will your immediate chain of command (platoon level) allow you to even try for the board. Then you have to pass the board. Depending on where you are, and how your unit likes you (if you're MOS proficient or a people pleaser), will determine if its easy or hard. Then, you have to make points: from PT test, weapons qual, schools, online training, etc. THEN you have to attend the BLC which is a month long introduction to managing a team. You can accomplish one, or multiple of those steps, but you have to get them all in order to promote to E5. All in all, there's alot more "red tape" now, but it's not difficult
Did a board in 04 in full battle rattle with mask. Csm had us don our masks. Had it on till the last candidate went through and we got the all clear. That was a crazy board. I had just got back from the initial invasion of Iraq. Everyone passed. Great times.
Probably couldn't find his ass in the dark doing night land navigation, what are the three north's,🤪uh, Northeast,North,Northwest🤓Da,wait no,no,that's directions, excuse me was that a trick question.😂😂😂😂.
It was nice to be Asian in the military when i was in. Rank was just thrown at me because of affirmative action, although it hurt my relations with my peers greatly, as i was a total shitbag undeserving of the many promotions given to me.
Damn, when I went to the board, I was grilled on weapons, land nav, first aid, current events, D&C, unit history and division history. I also had to recite the NCO creed WITH in a "Loud and Thunderous" manner. How things have changed.
Mine lasted about 2 minutes, if that. I was a prior SGT 2 years TIG with the 82nd. Got cought in that under 90 day rule after 1st Gulf war. Had to get out. Came back in 1 year later BUT HAD to take a reduction to SPC. I walked in said a bit about myself and CSM looked over records and had no questions Anyone have anything to add? The BN NBC NCO filling in for a 1SG asked an off the wall question to try to embarass me I guess bout the IM 93 or something. I really don't remember now but back then, coming from Saudi and all that masking, 256 kits, M8s... I shot back explaining the DT236 PDR75. The unit didn't have those yet so deer in the headlight look. CSM said " anyone else want to embarrass themselves? Ask now or hold you peace." I remember hearing my 1SG leaning over to that Chem guy and say "If the CSM has no questions that is our sign to ask no questions"
NBC guy here ,(now it's called CBRN). Nowadays we don't use the DT236 or PDR75 anymore, it got replaced with the VDR-2. In fact I just started paperwork to turn in the PDR75 my unit still had for some odd reason. We still use M256 kits but we're on the M256A2 now. And we still use M8 paper.
Doesn't know the three norths on a map? That is the most significant question he is asked. The answer is grid north, true north, and magnetic north. Every officer should know that.
They are looking for confidence in your answers. Who gives a shit if your wrong. If you’re constantly unsure with your decisions you won’t make a good leader.
clearly alot of you that commented didn't stop to think he was calling himself MSG when he really had a SGM rank on to throw him off to see if he knew the rank.
Joe Wigfall no, he is a master sergeant in the "position" of a sergeant major. Therefore you call him sergeant major. Same as a sfc in the position as a first sergeant. But he still holds the rank of master sergeant so he introduces himself as such.
They actually let you go to the promotion board with BDU's? When I went to the E5, E6, and Squadron Soldier of the Month boards, I wore a Class A uniform, and was inspected head to toe for proper fit of the uniform, and placement of medals on my jacket. For current events, you mean to tell me "Who won the Daytona 500" is really a good question? What happens if that soldier doesn't follow sports or NASCAR? I was asked about current world events, not sports events. There were more than three board members each time I went to a board.
This was intended to be an example for soldiers who have never been to the board. You are right, the board would be in Class A's, the current events will be more world related, and the board should consist of 1SGs and the CSM. Thanks for the input, I am sure there were many people thinking the same thing.
North West Magnetic North North East. Things have changed ! I was in my dress greens when I was before the E-5 promotion board. I spent an eternity answering demolition math questions. Enlisted 10-14-68/ETS 10-14-70. My father told me of his OCS promotion board was one question, what do you not do to cold coffee? Promoted at Fort Sill as an Artillery Forward Observer 2ndLt. 1943. D day +3 Normandy. Purple Heart twice and carried bullet fragments in his back and leg til the day he died 2005. RIP my hero
Maybe Army regs are different now. Enlisted men don't salute other EM's, only commissioned officers. Did I hear the Sp 4 address the board members as sir?
All personnel, enlisted or officer, shall salute due to the following: When reporting to the president of a board. When reporting to an officer. When reporting on sentry duty. When turning formations over. When reporting to a pay officer.
Just a dog and pony show pretty much, I think we do things much better in the Air Force for E-5 through E-7, you take a test based on your AFSC and Air Force history/customs and courtesies, you get points for that, the medals you've earned and your performance reports.
I did really well on my student first board meeting that I killed it but I made one mistake... I forgot my DoD tags!!!! I failed cause of uniformity. Even tho it isn’t mentioned, it’s part of being in the right uniform at the right time...
+Matthew Dex Everything affects your performance at the board however, as long as you are confident, it shouldn't affect you. For example, if they ask you something you don't know the answer to, you can say, "(address the Soldier asking the question) SGM, I do not know at this time." If you say that with confidence, you'll be fine. Say everything as a statement, not a question. If they ask you what color the sky is and you say purple but you say it as if you believe it, don't worry about it.
I knew two of the norths. I knew true north, but would I have gotten a pass with polar north (I know that magnetic north seems to be the expected answer)
I see. It makes sense I suppose to answer the questions with confidence, and in that you are correct; he seems to be just giving answers without emotion behind it. I don't know if era really matters in the end because people respect confidence. If I had to choose between one guy and the other, I would naturally look to the one who really acted like they wanted the promotion.
Wow that’s crazy. Over here at the Navy all you need is a test to advance pass e4. So it’s always a hit or miss when it comes to good leadership. One thing you’ll hear a lot is that anyone can pass a test.
I guess I am the only one whose boards members actually started an argument with each other, the SGM flat out just walked out to take a phone call, and they threw a fucking paper airplane at my face while I had to SCREAM the entire creed to the point of shaking the shingles off the ceiling. First time go.
I was told on mine who was the care bear that has hearts and rain coming down from a cloud. Grumpy bear "THE CREED OF THE NON COMMISSIONED OFFICER" All steps to assemble a 50.cal Never got the three types of norths on a map
Did he ask the three norths found on an army map? Like Due North, or North North East, or North North West ? ? ? What was the question? Changed since the 90's... Back in the day it was like... Do you know where you are? Mostly !
When reporting to the president of a board. When reporting to an officer. When reporting on sentry duty. When turning formations over. When reporting to a pay officer.
Walked off his right instead of left. Didnt sound confident, dont know land nav, almost said fuck this board and dropped his salute early....... sargents..... hes got damn perfect....

+Matthew Dex Everything affects your performance at the board however, as long as you are confident, it shouldn't affect you.
For example, if they ask you something you don't know the answer to, you can say, "(address the Soldier asking the question) SGM, I do not know at this time."
If you say that with confidence, you'll be fine. Say everything as a statement, not a question. If they ask you what color the sky is and you say purple but you say it as if you believe it, don't worry about it.
Alright, thanks man.
he didn't know the answer
I honestly don’t see the point of this because I’ve dealt with a lot of NCOs in the army that are terrible NCOs
That’s hilarious
Don’t you have to say “the creed of an non commissioned officer” before the nco creed?
No not always it really depends on the members of the board
I got tunnel vision during my e-5 board. I was paranoid, h.q. first sergeant and me got into it during reforger. He was the only one that voted no.
I was told on mine who was the care bear that has hearts and rain coming down from a cloud. Grumpy bear
"THE CREED OF THE NON COMMISSIONED OFFICER"
All steps to assemble a 50.cal
Never got the three types of norths on a map
Dayton 500 as a current event?
Every infantryman knows the 3 north’s.
True
Magnetic &
Grid
Henry Estrada some are really stupid
why the salute without a cover?
Army.. but I don't know why he's saluting enlisted..
"How much wood COULD a wood chuck, chuck IF a wood chuck COULD indeed chuck wood pvt.?"
I didn’t know you could salute while sitting down
Good question SGT Major, next question SGT Major...
Do you salute a Sargent?
Yes it’s the president of the board. This is one of the only times you salute an enlisted soldier
I thought you could only issue facing commands at the position of attention.
SGM,
SSG Duffy Reports (that’s is it)
Ar 600-25
Grid north , true north , and magnetic north?
So.. each soldier to get promotion like that? is it true?
Someone give my guy some ricola 😂
Did he ask the three norths found on an army map? Like Due North, or North North East, or North North West ? ? ? What was the question? Changed since the 90's... Back in the day it was like... Do you know where you are? Mostly !
that creed didnt sound proud and loud at all.
I wish my promotion boards were this simple. We also did them in dress greens.
Why is he saluting a SGM?
Why would you salute an NCO? On my E-5 board, a Major was the senior member I reported to and saluted not some other senior NCO.
saluting and giving commands while seated????
True North, Magnetic North, and Grid North MSG.
since when do enlisted salute enlisted...
It's a board thing
When reporting to the president of a board. When reporting to an officer. When reporting on sentry duty. When turning formations over. When reporting to a pay officer.
When reporting and or events such as this
That's a great customs and courtesies question!
Since when do enlisted salute one another. I did 3 yrs USMC and we didn't have that.
USMC operates differently than the Army
Ayy bro was born in Indianapolis Indiana I was born in Anderson Indiana but live in Indy. Hell yeah.
Hill Valley Ridge spur
Walked off his right instead of left. Didnt sound confident, dont know land nav, almost said fuck this board and dropped his salute early....... sargents..... hes got damn perfect....
Every corporal should know the three norths on a map. Actually every soldier. Let alone a NCO.
I didn't take orienteering in NJROTC in high school. But learned the 3 Norths in njrotc
You don't salute SGM, but at a Promotion Board, you do.
I didn't do anything of that. Benefits of deployment boards!
What did he said at the end?
"Gonna have to get him some Recola."
My husband said this was a boring board. He almost broke the door knocking so hard and it scared them because he was loud lol
