  • An 8 hour train from Krakow to Gdansk & Sopot in Poland - what's 2nd class travel like? In this travel vlog from 2018 we... ⬇ Click 'Show More' ⬇
    Today we leave Krakow, heading north to Gdansk and Sopot (hopefully the full tricity) by train! Krakow has been amazing but it's time to head to the coast and see more of what Poland has to offer.
    The 2nd class train was great, no need to upgrade to 1st class at all! Turns out the intercity trains in Poland are pretty nice and the 8 hours from Krakow to Gdansk was painless!
    If you're heading to Gdansk from Warsaw or Krakow, or anywhere really, definitely consider a train. As would have seen from this vlog, they definitely exceeded our expectations and is probably the easiest way to travel in Poland.

    Hi. For pierogi look for Mandu restaurant in old town of Gdańsk or in Oliwa. It's too short stay to see everything but hope you will enjoy 3city(Trójmisto).
    What to see?
    - II World War Museum
    - Old Town of Gdańsk
    - Pachołek - viewpoint in Oliwa
    - Sopot - wooden pier
    - If you have some more time: as mantioned Malbork Castle or German concentration camp museum(Konzentrationslager Stutthof ) in Sztutowo
    Also I would recommend to look for some "Bar Mleczny"- place where you can eat typical dishes that are present in average polish home ;)
    Best wishes!

    Gdańsk might seem a bit confusing upon first contact, as the city has been burned down to ground by Soviet forces after being captured with little fight in 1945, then only some parts of the city got rebuilt and nowadays there has been a boom in housing development as the city is one of the wealthiest in Poland. The fire of Gdańsk is impressively described in a novel "A Tin Drum" by Nobel Laureate Gunther Grass, I really recommend it to get the mood of the city. I see that you got lost around 17-century fortifications, if you look from above, you would see a system of bastions and canals used for defence, similar to Copenhagen and many Dutch cities. Good luck exploring TriCity! :)

      Both of the cities are old and have very different character. Gdansk being older and had much more turbulent history . Not many people know or notice but a lot of the main street ( długa street ) like 80%of the historical tenement houses were destroyed and then rebuilt with the historical accuracy. Nec temere, nec timide.

    Hi Guys. We went there last week and took a ferry Gdańsk- Hel, that is called a begining of Poland ( great beach over there). Ferry takes about an hour and costs 40zł one way and goes only once or twice a day I believe, but there are trains Hel- Gdańsk as well that take around 2h and go quite often. Perfect for one day trip, if you are interested, link for the ferry below: www.zegluga.pl/cruise-gdansk-hel

    You're in my city !!! soo cool ;) when it comes to food you should definitely try "Mandu" it a place with pierogi. They have a ton of different flavours and types of pierogi. In the lunch time it might be a bit of wait but it's sooo worth it! And it's only like 10 minute walk from "Long/Długa street" And if you'd like something much more "modern", when my friend from States visited and when i was guiding tours we all really enjoyed "Schopenhauer's" they have waffles and bagels that are great and also very close . If you'd like any more suggestions just write :)

    if you haven't discovered already- Gdansk has Dutch influences- you can see on the Main Street with the fountain. Sopot was always a resort town and Gdynia is a new city built in the 20's with a huge Art Deco influence. It may be worth taking a boat (there is one that goes regularly) from the Tricity to Hel. Kaszubian culture in a small town on the tip of the peninsula. I am a Canadian living in Poland for 15 years- I love that you are doing this vlog- and I love that people are finally taking notice of this great country!!

      Gdansk is not a new city. Its an old slavic setlement and was a very rich slavic town even before germans came and iccupied it in 16th century. Read a bit more about this town it has very, very long history.

    It's a very interesting vlog guys, I'm actually Polish but have lived abroad for 35 years now and I miss Poland so much. I visit my country every year and I notice how much Poland is improving years after years, not only the infrastructure but also public service and the people. It's nice to see you having a good time there and thanks for showing Poland the way it really is. Just a suggestion for your next vlog about Poland, try to learn a few words in Polish, people will love you if you even just try to say something in their language. Another thing, Poles are very attached to their tradition and history, so if you show them you know some Polish history then they'll love you. Pozdrawiam 😉

      Always find a way to fit in the pizza and beer! We've been really slack up until Krakow, easier to train when you're slow traveling for a month so we were going 2-4 times a week, cooking meals, tracking macros, strict training etc.

      1st class also usually has wider and softer seats. However what you get varies from train to train. On the other hand it is rare, but still possible to end up on a train from the 80's, however not on an InterCity connection.

    • @dreadfulsam
      @dreadfulsam 6 років тому +1

      Word of advice - this is what you can expect from an InterCity train in Poland (though not always). If you want a true Polish railway experience, try a TLK train. Be advised - it is not for the faint-hearted, because the travel time is ridiculously long, the cars date back to early 1980s and look (and smell) like they haven't been properly cleaned since leaving the factory, and the conductors will be absolutely useless if you try to communicate with them in any foreign language. On some connections, there is also the added bonus of stinkbugs. Poland can seem nice when you're travelling between the big cities, but in its heart, it remains depressingly Eastern European. I should know, I've lived here my entire life.

    • @CommentCritic
      @CommentCritic 6 років тому +1

      Got to agree with dreadfulsam. Recently I traveled from the south up to Poznan by train and had to use a combination of the regional lines and the IC. Gotta say that the IC these days is a lot better these days, but the regional lines lack in comfort and ease of use. TLK is probably the worst train you can get.
      In regards to the classes - as far as I know, the differences in IC trains are minimal, but in the "latest and greatest" EIP trains there's quite some difference.

In Gdansk: Drukarnia cafe on a lovely Mariacka Street, Park Oliwa - historic romantic place with a cathedral and museums. :)
    Also aquapark in Sopot with great Saunas and a huge green Sopot Northern Park area. :) In Gdynia try Orlowo district with a pier and a clif. Happy chiling! :)

So relaxing way to travel I say G dang sk ... I always stay in Sopot, more expensive but in the middle and train it to the tri cities no problems....I love Poland 🇵🇱❤️

Quick question- what is the situation with luggage please, as I see you were free to wander to the coffee bar etc. I’m planning on mainly using trains next year when I spent 3 months in Europe so bag security is a key issue for me seeing I’ll have more than just a back pack. Would appreciate your advice on this. Is there a luggage car where you can store your bags so you don’t have to worry about them til you arrive at your destination perhaps? Thanks,
