Fun fact, TLK trains are not really cheaper than at least IC category trains (especially after the fairly recent Intercity price reform, basing them on the demand, not on buying in advance), but they still exist, because many routes don't offer any alternative and don't demand higher standards. So is the case with railway line no 203 "Ostbahn" between Krzyż and Tczew. Or they're just there so the service on popular lines is constant, but they lack the rolling stock to upgrade it

ticket prices in poland are generally pretty low across the board. you can expect to pay about the same price for a ride in one of these old soviet carriages as for one in a new dart/flirt. except for pendolino, if you wanna go these 40 km/h faster you gotta pay 4-5x the regular ticket price. but you do get a water bottle so i suppose that makes it just about worth it.

When DB close the mainline to Frankfurt Oder, when they do engineering works, some Berlin to Warsawa trains get diverted via the Ostbahn to Kostrzyn before travelling to Rzepin and regaining the original route. Old and slow ... Considering much of the line would allow 100 to 120 km/h (Tczew to Gdansk even faster) I wonder why they couldn't upgrade the diesel locomotive to higher speeds.
90 km/h appears very slow for an intercity train.
The fastest diesel locomotives in Poland are the 10 SU160 (Pesa Gama) for 140 km/h. They also had SU45 and SU46 for 120 km/h (from the 1960s/70s) but they were all retired in recent years.
PKP-IC ordered 17 dual power locomotives from Pesa (to be delivered 2025) so perhaps these will speed up the trains on non-electrified lines a bit. Apparently electrification between Kostrzyn and Piła is being worked on so this would be a good line for a dual power train.
Then again it's not just the locomotives. The line from Piła to Tczew is mostly straight and flat but only allows 100 km/h. As you show the signalling systems are ancient so that's probably what needs to be upgraded (and new welded track laid).

TLK trains are great if you're lucky. They are notorious for their delays, bad smell in the summer, dirty toilets, terrible co-passengers - if you travel often you'll meet that from time to time. EIP are much better, but the only problem is that they are present only in the biggest cities, and to some people their price is prohibitive.

The Ostbahn railway line was once one of the main trunk lines in Prussia. Already before the First World War, steam trains from Berlin to Königsberg and Gdańsk ran there with the V120, reaching an average speed of 97-100 km/h between the Tczew-Chojnice-Piła stations. The line has a very good geometric profile. v160 would be easy to get there. Unfortunately, after many years, the line is now of secondary importance and the fact that this V90 train runs there is embarrassing.

Poland's worst trains you say? Not at all. There are way worse trains in Poland. TLK trains are more or less IC trains. They just stop more often, run on smaller lines sometimes and may offer slightly older coaches (but not always). But they cost the same and run with more or less the same stock. There are still trains that run with 1950's stock that are worn down and aren't kept clean that well. Btw, on normal weekdays TLK58110/85110 "Bory Tucholskie" runs with only 2 carriages ;)

Most of these coaches can operate at 160 km/h, however, and PKP announced a modernisation tender for another 150 of these older coaches, where the doors will be upgraded to push button and vacuum toilets installed, and many old 1st class compartment coaches are being converted to 2nd class open seating coaches. The problem is the class EU07 locomotives in passenger service, which are only capable of 125 km/h (while many tracks have been recently upgraded beyond that speed), and will likely remain in service well into the 2040s, as about two thousand total of EU07/ET22/ET41 were built, most parts of which are common between them, thus spare parts are still available from scrapped units.

@@Simon-Andersen Until around 2014 or so, PKP Intercity operated only two categories of trains: TLK that received a public funding and EIC that were operated commercially. Then a couple of things happened at the same time. The introduction of Pendolino high-speed train freed up a number of EIC coaches, Dart and Flirt EMUs were introduced, as well as upgrades to existing coaches. So it was decided separate the subsidised trains into older TLK and modern Intercity classes, both sharing the same ticket prices. TLK would be then gradually phased out as new rolling stock gets introduced. The initial goal for this was 2021, but because of delays and cancelled bids, they are now expected to be discontinued around 2026 or 2027.
