Just like Star Wars empire at war, a simple game that can fit in the back of your pocket in terms of memory still holds the core values of gaming and is loved to this day
This game was amazing for me , the big battles between faction blew mi head off , unique experience in early years of gaming !
Man, I thought this was a sequel trailer from the thumbnail. What a classic game. I absolutely love Freelancer. In my opinion it still stands as one of the best ship-based games out there. X3/X4 definitely do well to add extra depth, though. It's so great to see the Discovery mod is still ongoing, though, wow!

There seriously needs to be a big marketing campaign to revitalize this game again! The core, diehard fans will always be there. 💪That's always amazing, but at the same time we need to get more people back into this amazing game. With the most recent mods, it literally looks like a game that could be released TODAY! It's wild, the game looks really great now.
What I wouldn't give for a sequel where Trent can come out of retirement.
I spent years playing this game. I loved this game
Considering how long its been since I did my one play through of this game its a testiment to how (almost) great this game was that I instantly remembered the bits in the trailer and some of the context around those moments with a flood of other memories about the game. Truely a game that deserved a sequel/further development of the concepts.
Such a bit the space genre essentially died after this game. I suspect there is an alternitive universe out there where Freespace 3 and Freelancer 2 were the games of the late 2000's but sadly thats not our timeline

oh man, I have great memories playing this game, and playing online with it. my clan was -=R=- CLAW we used to like to fly around in the tier 9 mercenary ship.. I think the down graded version was the Barracuda , i was dorky and flew under the name Rick Hunter
I remember playing this game years ago. There was a mod that added in pretty much every ship from every Sci-Fi show you can think of. Lol. Like I don't remember the name of it but I had some great memories from it.

I haven't played Discovery since version 4.86. I can't imagine how much stuff they added since then.
If you're interested in coming back, there's a "returning veteran" package that sets you up with a transport and some snubs so you can start making money and jump right back in without having to grind your way up with a starflea!
I was thinking about starting up this game again. Still can’t find another game to scratch that freelancer itch. Was thinking of trying X4 when the new story dlc comes out but in the meantime this looks fun to jump back into

Man this game was my shit back in the early 2000's makes me think of my time on the North Quadrant server in the Colonial Fleet or the Void server in the Stargate clan
and here i was afraaid id never get to play this awesome game ever again!

Looks like I need to dig out my old freelancer box and see if that CD is still readable.
Failing that, there are sites out there that can give... alternatives... to installing the game.

I still freaking love this game! I play it every year or so. God I want a sequel so bad, and it's probably the right time too, what with Star Citizen takes ages to come out. Please! If not a sequel, then a reboot or even a remaster, and put it on consoles with cross play.

Man freelancer was one of the best games, the modding community was amazing. I still remember FLCE, throwing newtonian physics in blew my mind way back then. Plus the great comradery "Well if you can dodge a nuke you can fight the covenant, anyways I just shot 4 at you good luck!"

Couldn't agree more. Think about how many game developers have recently been given pink slips from those game corporations. There's gonna be in the horizon a whole slew of new games and concepts for new ways to play those games. Very exciting indeed.

PSA: When installing and trying the unmodded version it didn't work but once the hd mod is installed it'll work without issue.

I played Discovery a little bit on and off over the years. Great community! I haven't played a lot recently, but it's a SUPER great game and to this day, not a single space sim has ever topped Freelancer for me. It's still the best.
What an absolute classic. No game really has come close to the excitement I felt when I played through this campaign.

Those screen wipes in space really show off the difference the HD Edition makes. So Discovery isn't compatible with the HD Edition mod? It looks good too though. I suppose they did some graphical upgrades too. I have played Discovery mod long ago.
It is, just install it first. It's mostly just textures.
It isn't compatible, no, since HD edition does modify a few meshes and cause file conflicts which might trigger the anticheat. You can try to take some bits out of it, like the starspheres (system backgrounds) or some textures which are fine.

i liked playing Freelancer way back when, though admittedly was not my first space game, sry but Wing Commander filled that spot... but i thought Freelancer was still good, despite the campaign being very limited in choice sometimes "specially if you wanted to win the race mission"... and a shame the campaign covered ONLY a tiny handful of the systems you could visit in game...

You only need the Discovery link. Both HDE and Discovery install over the vanilla game and create their own directory.

The Singelplayer campaign with the Freelancer HD mod is definitely still a great experience, then you can decide to hop on the Discovery Freelancer Mod Roleplay server.

The Discovery mod is, yes. There is a 24/7 hosted server.
Yeah Freelancer as a game was capable of a surprisingly impressive stuff.
It had quite a few 24/hr servers that used to run with dedicated communities in a very MMO like style.
I played that on 2003 now im 43 years old. 😂
Is there mining?
Yes. In the vanilla game there are asteroid fields indicated on the map. You can't mine the large asteroids but there's an infinite number of small ones floating around. Shoot them, it just takes one shot, and they may drop some ore. Then tractor beam that in. There are different types of asteroid fields with different ores of varying value. That's about it. The Discovery Mod makes it more complicated with licenses and dedicate mining lasers and ships but it's basically the same (from what I've read).
@Dethmeister Discovery is implementing new mining mechanics soon too. Large asteroids you have to crack open with explosives, then mine the ore nodes inside.
Yup. Mining and trading. In the current Discovery version, you mine ore to convert it into a refined product that sells for a better price to trade with. But there's going to be a mining rework in the next version - which isnt out yet - where you have to crack open asteroids with explosives to mine the ore vein inside it.

People tend to view it a bit through rose-colored glasses, reflecting on past disappointments when it was more arcade-like than a simulation. As Wing Commander enthusiasts, many expected a blend of Elite and Wing Commander but ended up with more of an action space shooter. Despite this, it remains a good game, though Chris Roberts might have promised more than was delivered. Nevertheless, Wing Commander Privateer is still my favorite.
